The super jagged rocks at our campsite that made it impossible to go barefoot in our tents.
    Frances S.

CAMPERS BEWARE! I have a lot of thoughts on Audra State Park, so I'll try to organize this based on what I think tent campers need to know to make an informed decision about staying here, the reasons you should come here, our personal experience, and finally, accessibility and sustainability. Tent Camping: they have about 60 campsites. They vary wildly in terms of size. Many seem like they have been optimized for RVs. Every camp site had a picnic table, a wooden bench, and a fire circle with a grill (in various states of repair). It's really hard to tell looking at the booking website what you're getting. If you don't have littles or need electric, I definitely think it would be worth doing a riverside site (they looked bigger as well as beautiful) but we had those needs so we camped on the back side in electric sites. Our biggest surprise was the ground. There were no tent pads which you see at a lot of parks. Instead the entire camps site was covered in large, jagged rocks. I assume this was for drainage because in the neighboring site where our friends were in the spots with no rocks it got very muddy. But this ground cover made the tent floors EXTREMELY uncomfortable and made it extremely hard, verging on impossible, to hammer in stakes. While we were able to overcome these problems I would like you to be prepared for them and pack with them in mind instead of doing what we did and dropping extra money in town at Walmart to make our camp more livable. We picked up some cheap area rugs for the tent floors (a life saver) and cheap flip flops to wear in the tents for the areas not covered by the rugs. We also had to buy some extra thick bed pads, our typical camping pads were absolutely NOT going to cut it. We bent quite a few tent stakes, so bring extras or opt for heavy duty stakes. The other thing to know is that there is absolutely NO cell service. In fact, just driving there from Virginia we had spotty service for most of the trip. Some people will doubtless consider this a perk, but If you're like me and need to make and receive calls for kids and pets, you'll find yourself driving into town for cell service or making WhatsApp calls at the camp store. I feel like for the number of campsites they had they really didn't have enough showers (only about 4!) and there were definitely lines for them. Why you should go to Audra State Park: first of all, shout out to all the staff. The park was really well staffed and everyone was super kind and helpful! The bathrooms were cleaned and restocked every morning and the staff was quick to deal with problems. The camp store staff was great and there was wifi available there. The park was extremely beautiful. The river was pretty and there were blooming rhododendrons everywhere. The Alum trail hike was very pretty and the boardwalk was a cool way to see the cave. Our experience: we were initially feeling very frustrated. Our campsite was small, rocky, uneven, and very hard to set up. We had already planned to get dinner in town that night so while in Elkins we grabbed the stuff we needed to get comfy. After that we felt way better about our camp site and were able to rest and enjoy ourselves. Over the next few days we enjoyed the River and the Alum Cave Trail. One word of caution: the Alum trail is rated "easy". It is definitely more moderate. Accessibility and sustainability: i am by no means an expert of sustainability at parks, but I know most have recycling bins. If that's important to you you'll have to be prepared to pack it back out with you. They also don't seem to be very concerned with wildlife, as the trash cans are absolutely not wildlife proof and those raccoons were BRAZEN. The park gets like a D for accessibility. There were some accessible campsites. The main difference between those and the rest seemed to be poured asphalt driveways for RVs. It would have been nicer if they had been closer to the bath houses or camp store. The bath house closest to the accessible camp sites had a shower that was clearly set up to be more accessible. The WV parks website has the Alum Cave Trail in its list of accessible trails. IT WAS NOT EVEN A LITTLE ACCESSIBLE. It does have the nice board walk, but there's no way to get there. The most accessible part of the river is a poured concrete "beach" style graded entrance with a close parking lot and several handicap parking spots. But the only way to get to the river is by stairs (womp womp). Making that entrance more accessible with a ramp or paved walkway would be a really great addition.

My wife wanted camping on a river for her birthday. We found Audra in our search for State Parks within about four hours of Columbus Ohio. We chose a site that was not riverside. Being that we had never been to Audra we were not sure of the lay out but were not too keen on folks possibly traipsing through our campsite to access the river. I am glad that we chose an electric site across from the Middle Fork because it meant that we had a view of the river from the camper. (We have a Sol Dawn made by Intech that has a massive picture window just off the dinette/bed area.) We camped in mid May for three nights at site 11. There was a great view of the full moon through the tree tops. Would definitely come back to this site but there's so many other WV State Parks to visit. There's no cell service within 20 minutes or so of the campground/sate park. (We have Google Fi, which uses various towers.) However the wifi from the camp store/office was great. It reached out campsite so that we still felt a little connected (as in we could make a wifi call if we needed) or if we wanted to check the weather (without turning on the weather radio). The folks in the camp store were pleasant & helpful. Always shared treats with our doggo. This is a compact campground but with the trees and majestic azaleas it felt like there was still a lot of privacy. Our travel trailer is on the small side, it's about 16 feet including the length of the tongue. If you have a 'standard'/full size camper you should probably consider other state parks. Look at the site size when you're booking if you have a larger unit. Only a few of the sites seemed large enough for a big camper. There's a potable water fill up across from the camp store. Enough space to stop and fill up on the way to your site. Unfortunately we didn't know prior to coming so we traveled from Ohio with a full fresh water tank. The dump station is tucked off the road to the right on the way out. Quick in and out to dump the waste tank. The road into and out of the campground, much like the roads just outside the state park, are quite narrow. If your unit is wide, proceed with caution on the way into Audra State Park. We hiked the 2.7/3 mile Alum Creek & Cave trail (which is referred to as a loop, but personally I would avoid walking down or up that quite steep gravel hill connecting the top and lower trails.) The trail was wide at the start/end but fairly narrow and full of rocks and roots near the middle. We passed no one on the hike but it's fairly nicely blazed with old paint marks and tacked on trail markers. We hiked lower to upper and I am glad that we went that direction. Started out along the river, went up in several short but at times severe inclines. Be sure to bring water and wear proper footwear. This trail is marked as easy, I would not consider this an easy trail. I would say moderate at best. If it was indeed easy I think I'll stick to easy trails at West Virginia State Parks.

This is a lovely state park in West Virginia that is ABSOLUTELY FREE to enjoy. We parked in the parking lot and started on the path along the Rivers EDGE. There is a wooden plank boardwalk that is a little worse for wear in some locations, so be careful. There is also some miss on them that makes them very slippery in sections. Tony had to help me in a few spots. The boardwalk takes you under the cliff overhang, making a really good cave over hang. Very beautiful. Tons of mountain laurel everywhere, so I am sure it would be beautiful in the spring when they are in bloom. If you get a chance to enjoy, you should... Highly recommend this lovely free park that is a great day trip from Charleston, Morgantown, Clarksburg, Fairmont and Parkersburg areas.

First the good: This park offers free admission and free parking. The natural beauty is evident everywhere you look. Waterfalls, rock formations, mountain laurel, fresh air...what more could you want? Well stocked, newly renovated camp store with very good pricing. Friendly, helpful staff Beautiful, clean campground with waterfront sites. Newly renovated laundry area in the campground. Campground can now be reserved online. Campground is designed for tents or small RVs. Free WiFi available Some observations: Bathhouses are clean, but dated. Road into campground is very narrow AND one way. There isn't wiggle room. Big rigs and RVs over 30ft should avoid this campground. Campsites are narrow with trees and other obstacles present. While your RV may fit a site in length, trees may interfere with your slides or awning. Midsized RVs (less than 30ft) could try sites 41,49,50. Check route prior to entry. A covered bridge on the way in has a 12 ft clearance. Cell phone service is spotty. We visited Audra on a Saturday in May 2019. The park was moderately busy with day use visitors. Kayaking, paddle boarding, hiking, and picnicking were popular activities. Campground wasn't very busy. The ranger and camp store staff were top notch. Patient, helpful, professional, kind - true West Virginia hospitality abounds at Audra. The waterfront camp sites are amazing, but not for our setup (insert sad face here). I told hubs I'd be willing to rent camp here. I don't tent camp. It's really that beautiful here.

Nice place to enjoy nature honestly. Typically trash is kept off the premises well. So you can enjoy nature without garbage blowing about.

Its highlight is a series of four cascading WATERFALLS on the Tygart Valley River that are easily accessible by a short path from the parking lot. There are large flat rocks right next to the falls, allowing for scenic photographs but no swimming. (Fishing with license and whitewater kayaking are allowed). Fun Fact: this is one of the sites for West Virginia's "Almost Heaven" swings, installed by the state's Department of Tourism across the state for photo opps. This particular swing has the falls in the background. (As of late 2025, there are 51 swings in the state). We had a unique experience at the park in that we were approached by a park volunteer in an ATV offering us a ride down to the falls, and then continuing along some park paths with his commentary about the history of the site as a 19th-century mill town, and pointing out some gristmills. Both park admission and the ATV ride were free although we did give the volunteer a tip. There are 18 miles of trails for hiking and mountain biking, ranging from easy to difficult. We didn't do any hiking on this visit, but did eat our picnic lunch at one of the conveniently located picnic table. There is a gift shop on-site, as well as clean restrooms. It's also a site on WV's Waterfalls Trail, wherein you can earn prizes for checking it at specific WV waterfalls. Note that this is a day-use park, so no camping is allowed. Wi-Fi connectivity is low to non-existent. We approached the park from the south, near Pruntytown, WV, and while the distance was short (about 12 miles), it took us about 25 minutes to reach because of curvy roads. On our return, we went to Tygart Lake State Park, via Grafton, where we camped for the night.
