If what's on-site wasn't enough to fill your time, the ranch is about a 20 minutes drive from Lake George as well as hiking. Gorgeous setting - the property is nestled along the banks of the Hudson River and the shadows of the Adirondacks. The stables and paddocks lay on side of the road under the shadows of the mountain. The accommodations, saloon, dining hall, basketball court, horse show pits, pools, beach, kayak launch and main office are on the Hudson River side. Our room had recently been renovated as the smell of newly hewn pine would attest to. The country cabin vibe was clean and the bed/ pillows were very comfortable. It also had a mini fridge, cable, WiFi and flat screen TV. It has a cute little porch attached with seating out front for 4 to watch your kids or just enjoy the view and sounds of nature. Meals are: 9a Breakfast 1p Lunch 6:30p Dinner We were there for 2 dinners, 2 breakfasts and a lunch. The food was great! Soda bar is available for refills as well pitchers of water and juice for breakfast and of course coffee and tea. * I'm not sure how it works for kids, I'm sure the Chef would work with you to get something they would like as he asked us. TIP: Bring snacks and additional drinks and keep in your in room fridge if you need. There's some gas stations and convenience stores in Lake George you can pick up some things of you feel like you or your group may need more. The stables are fine enough. There are helmets available, we brought our own. The horses are kept herd style and are grouped mainly in one big pasture. They bring in just the horses they need and switch them out as needed. The hands have the horses tacked and waiting for you, so make sure you come on time or even a bit early. TIP: The larger the group the more time wasted getting everyone on a horse and it'll start eating into your ride time. The first ride - NO MATTER WHAT BOX YOU CHECKED- is an assessment to see where you're riding skills and horsemanship are at. They try to find you a horse suitable based on what you rated your skill level and observe your riding up and down slight hills and the trails in general at a walk and trot. After that ride, the barn manager will let you know what types of rides they feel comfortable you can do next. There is a lead guide and another hand in the rear of the group. - A fast ride- which is the same as the first ride with loping/cantering and more aggressive steeper hills. If you want more rides - for an additional fee you can take lessons, work cattle, take a several hour trail ride or even cross the Hudson and trail ride more! The horses used for trail riding are atleast shod in the front if not all 4. With the rockiness, brush, hills and sticks it's important to keep their feet healthy. We got there extra early and they allowed us to brush our horses and assist them in tacking them as well. Obviously, this is only possible when there isn't a lot of other guests otherwise you could just be in the way. Everyone in the stables was knowledgeable of our horses personal quirks and how best to communicate to them..this horse listens better to neck rein vs plow rein or leg pressure vs reins. Shout out to Baby and Black Jack! We had a total of 3 rides - the assessment, a fast ride and a longer fast ride and used the same horses as we seemed to fit well with their personalities. But, if you wanted to try a different horse let them know - they would do their best to accommodate. You get one ride per nights stay per person, if you want more tell the barn manager and they will tell you what time and you would just pay the front desk. The owner is on premises the entire time. Staff everywhere were friendly, asked how our stay was going and if they could do anything to make it better...and on my birthday at dinner they had gotten me some pretty flowers, card signed by all the ranch team and even a piece of gluten free cake!!! SUPER thoughtful, sweet and made my day! The current owner has had the property for a year and has been working on improvements. The pools outside and some of the rooms/cabins are going through renovations currently. The indoor pool area was ok, we couldn't find the lights, but there was enough natural light from the windows to see.. but the hot tub was more like a Luke warm tub so hopefully that's on the list soon to update.

These guys were wonderful every step of the way. While the experience is incredible, the great staff made this whole day truly special. Everything for our white water rafting adventure was taught to us and explained in great detail. Everyone felt comfortable. Equipment was kept in great shape, and we felt confident in the gear and the staff. The staff were also really funny, making everyone feel welcome. We rode a shuttle to our put-in site, and we carried the rafts down to the river. Shortly after, we were on the water going through class three rapids, and it was a blast! Going for a swim in the calm sections surrounded by wilderness was incredible! The water gun fights between groups was also great fun. Overall, I would do this again time and time again. Due to their poor installation workmanship, they failed to seal any openings so mice got in and ate wires. They refused to take responsibility for this and blamed the manufacturer. We googled this matter of installation and across the board every article said sealing holes is one of the most important parts of installation. Allen Pools said they NEVER seal holes. They have totally blown us off, not even returning phone calls. All we want is to have them fix the wiring (and seal holes). They have treated us poorly. Think twice about this company.

Calling ahead, they answered both phone calls immediately and were cool and efficient in their response- young guy (maybe early 20's?)- nice guy/kid. When we got there, it was a simple and painless process. Get your vest, choose some paddles (both in great, solid quality) and get on our kayak, which the employee had in the water, waiting. He gave us the basics and off we went. On our return paddle in, he saw us coming in and came up to the docking area and helped us both off. On our way up the little walk I turned back to see the view of the water when not even 2 minutes passed by and the employee had already lifted the kayak and started washing it off and cleaning it. It shows that this guy and the company care about quality and presentation as well as customer feeling and well being. Kudos to them. Loved the experience. Take a chance folks, you won't be dissappointed.

Arrived as it was leaving with another customer. I was very interested in a kayak Umiak advertised on their website. I called and spoke to Brian on Sunday to confirm it was there. He advised it was there. I explained that I was VERY interested and was concerned it would be sold before I could come see it. I was assured it was fine and not to be concerned. Monday we had a snow storm. I called and spoke to Brian. I explained I was really wanted that kayak and was worried it would be sold before I could get there. I provided Brian with my credit card info etc. and asked if he could consider it SOLD. He took all my info and said he wouldn't charge the card until I got there but that the Kayak was mine. I spoke to another person there Tuesday and explained that, as it was a 14' kayak, I'd like to come with a trailer but couldn't be there until Saturday. I was assured that my name was on that kayak, they had even just wiped it down for me and it would be ready for me Saturday. I explained again that I was concerned about it being sold before I could get there but was assured it was fine. Saturday I arrived just as the kayak I had "purchased" was leaving in the bed of another persons pickup. Brian apologized, said he had messed up, etc. none of which does me any good. A specific trip was made to Stowe. If I'd had any indication I should get there earlier I would have. I'm not sure if this is incompetence or a lack of ethics on their end but unfortunately I, as a consumer, have no recourse but to complain. Maybe someone in the future will be aware that this is not a business that lives up to it's word.

My nephews (8 & 10) & I signed up for the tubing trip this morning. We did that, with our cooler raft in tow. However, i ended up pushing my nephews in their tubes for about a half mile (past the second cove) before we were able to get going. This took about an hour and a half. About 3/4 the way through our time on the water, we heard thunder. I realized they hadn't covered what to do in the case of bad weather in the briefing. So thankfully I was able to call the company from my tube & they advised us to get out of the water if we heard thunder & wait 15 min before getting back in. We heard thunder in and off for about 45 min so stayed out of the water on some rocks while we waited. I felt like we were bothering the company when they called & they didn't seem at all concerned, telling me it was a passing shower. After we returned to the water, we saw some lightening so I tried getting us over to shore. The water was getting choppy & we weren't going anywhere so I got out of my tube & pulled all of us to shore. We built a small shelter using our tubes & tried to stay dry but at this point, it was pouring. I called the company again & they said there was nothing they could do & couldn't come pick us up based on our location. I checked my GPS & we were .6 miles away from our stopping location. The company told us to start walking back along the shore. We did that and along the way my nephew slipped on the rocks because it was still pouring. Finally, when we made it back, we had to drag all the gear up the hill (which was mentioned during the briefing but we weren't expecting to do this in the pouring rain. When we got back, I expressed my disappointment that they'd send anyone out with conditions like that expected as I truly felt our lives were in danger. The woman said no one was blaming anyone and I corrected her. Yes, I blame the company for putting our lives in danger. She explained that they had no idea about the weather conditions and that this system just popped up out of nowhere. I can understand that but at no point did anyone offer to come & help us. They could have easily walked from where they were & helped us walk back. I would not recommend this company due to the lack of safety measures & how isolated we felt when conditions got bad.

Day 1 was okay weather-wise, however the boat itself was dirty, all of the seats were ripped and the carpet became soaked through from the underside. I brought it back in because there was something clearly wrong with the way the motor was sputtering but I was told it sounded normal. Day 2 it rained all day and when I called to discuss this with someone, I was told then owners would need to call me back. I called back 3 more times throughout the day and never heard back from the owners, and of course they charged me full price for the rainy day. I eventually got my money back after going through a dispute process with my cc company. It was clear that the employee that helped me was frustrated and knew he worked for shady owners. I know there are not a lot of options on Lake Placid, but do yourself a favor and find a boat somewhere else. If it were possible to give zero stars, I would.

After a lot of research, we settled on Great Outdoors and they exceeded our expectations: friendly upon arrival, informative, honest about river rules, accommodating, and affordable. It was $30 per person which included parking, a life jacket, a single tube your choice (pink or blue), and their shuttle service to the drop off spot. Because the shuttles run frequently, Great Outdoors even transported our picnic coolers back to their base for safe keeping before we put in. They also have a lockbox for car keys. Our whole experience on the river was approximately 3.5 hours but that's because we started tubing shortly after the water was released, therefore the beginning was a slow start of rock tetris maneuvering. If you want an "easier" start, I would recommend going in at the time Great Outdoors suggests. We just wanted to be on the water for longer and wanted to avoid the mass crowds of launching. Halfway through our ride, the crowds finally caught up and new tubing friendships formed because of bumper boating moments, all par for the course :)
