I brought in 80+ PRISTINE, HIGH DEMAND books, hoping to get at LEAST $300 for them, as they are about $650 all together (yes I calculated the market price for them). I was offered $55 for them. And when I tried to argue about how ridiculous that is, I was told that I "needed to be more educated" on how their system works and that I shouldn't have brought any books in if I didn't read how their book selling policy is. Took over 1500 books into this store all in pristine condition and out of all of those books got less than $20 for all of them. All these books looked practically brand new and there reason was that they had a high inventory of all the books I brought in. Talk about highway robbery. Will never turn my books into this store ever again. I will not ever recommend anyone to sell their books at this store as long as it remains open. You are better off selling your items elsewhere because you will have a better chance of getting money for what you are trying to sell. read more

First of all, let me say - this is a great place to find books, dvds, cds, albums, etc. and at great prices. But do not, I repeat, DO NOT take books there to sell . . they will rip you off. . . I took 40 wonderfully conditioned topical books there and they offered me $6!! Bookmans is the same - they do not give a decent price. You are better to donate and get a tax donation than to sell to places like this. I had two huge bags full of business and investment books I wanted to either sell or donate and found this place. So I decided to give it a go. I was very impressed with the friendly employees. They explained they will scan all the books and make a cash offer based on their selling prices at the store. They also will donate and recycle the books. I thought what a great concept and was all in! I was told there was only one person ahead of me but I ended up waiting for over 45 minutes and heard 6 peoples names announced prior to mine which was not transparent at all. They took all the books and offered a measly $13.29! I wasn't expecting to make a fortune but that was pretty ridiculous. While waiting I decided to look around and saw that they do have a great selection of books, games and puzzles. I especially liked the children's section- Half Pint Books, that was very tidy with a good selection of books. They even have a clearance section in the back. Based on the incredibly low prices they offer, I thought their selling prices were on the high end but I guess that is part of doing business. I think next time I'll just donate my books as it's not worth my time just to get a few bucks. read more

This is a great place to buy books. But DO NOT think you can get a decent price for your books. Even if, you have a new book, just released last month, in mint condition. I brought on 2 bags full of books. All were on great condition. Some cookbooks, some dvd's, some fiction. And I was offered $2.29!!!! I should have taken them back and donated them. I stopped in here awhile back trying to sell some dvds and get some extra cash. Thanks to the person that was helping me for telling me up front and not wasting my time-that they give you 1 price for everything (even if they don't want it) and that's it. So, say you bring in 100 items and they actually buy 10-you're going to lose all 100 for that price they will pay for those 10 items. Do yourself a favor and skip this place and go to Bookmans or Zia Records. They only take what they pay for. Half Price Books are thieves!!! Never again will I set foot in there! read more

This review is specially for the collectables, which is massive is size and has tons of variety. I think I could spend at least an hour looking through all the collectables, first editions, and signed books. I found so many books I was interested in, but the prices were incredibly high. I spent some time looking at various online sites (eBay, Mercari, and pango books) to buy used books and found what I was looking at for at least half the price they were asking. I asked an employee if they offered any price matching or could be flexible on price. The employee told me they took data from online sales to price their books. Well... if I can pull up prices in real time that are half of their asking price .. that seems a little wrong? Their collectables are over twice the price vs buying resell online.. which is ironic considering this is "half price" books lol. I'd like to note that at the Phoenix location, they have price matched for me in the past. So this might be specific to this particular location. read more

Picked up a psychology book I need for class that was at least $74 on Amazon and I got it here for $13. I love this place.

They have a nice selection of new and used books, and the new books are discounted so you're not paying the suggested retail price. Every penny helps these days. The employees were helpful, but didn't bother me unnecessarily. This was my first visit but their buy back counter seemed very busy, always a good sign in a used book store. Not your community/neighborhood bookstore where you can have a coffee and sit in comfort and read awhile, but a good place to pick up a decently priced used or new book. read more

This is my favorite bookstore. They have a variety of affordable merchandise in every subject. I personally love their journals. I go in and buy at least 3 every visit! They also have tons of used crafting books (lots of vintage too). I have found so many treasures in this store! They do buy used books and other items but don't get your hopes up... in this category I was disappointed. But the merchandise they sell is so next level amazing I gave them 5 anyway! read more

My partner and I shouldn't have gone during closing time but honestly, we go here at spur of the moments when we have date nights the service is always outstanding here, and so is the selection of books! A beacon for all book and music lovers!! This is one of my favorite book stores to go to! Growing up all we had was Barnes and Noble and it made it hard to read a lot because books were $15-$30 a piece. Here you get so many good book in great condition for $3-$15 (much more affordable!). They also have a book buy program where you can sell your unwanted books for cash which I love bringing my read books in to basically exchange for different ones. In addition to books they have records, cassettes, CDs, comics, journals, textbooks, toys and so many different sections. I definitely recommend taking an afternoon and browsing through this store I bet you'd find something great! read more

If you have books, DVDs, CDs or other music to sell, I would advise to stay far away from Half Price Books. They used to let you bring in items and would make you an offer on only what they wanted and you could take back the rest. THAT is how they did it the last time I was in the store. However, I went in today for the first time in quite a while with several bins of excellent condition CDs and popular books. No one bothered to inform me that they changed their policy and would only make you an offer on everything yo bring in, whether they need it or not. After waiting an hour for them to go through everything, they offered me $28. When I asked the girl how many items that was for, she simply said "All of it". When I started to ask what she was talking about (again, I did not know this relatively new policy they have", she gave me a canned answer that they use a special system that determines how well things sell, their current prices, and a bunch of other criteria I don't recall. When I asked if I could remove a few books that were on top that I knew sell well online, she told me no and that the offer was only good if they took everything. At this point, they had emptied every bin I had brought out into a huge pile on the counter and I knew that they were not going to put it back in for me, so I decided to cut my losses and accept the pitiful offer. I didn't have anything else to do with the stuff and didn't want to bring them back home, but I think that's what they are planning and capitalizing on. Very unseemly business practice in my opinion. Sorry this review is so long, but I felt the details were necessary. Bottom line.....stay far away from selling your items here, and instead go to Bookman's. They pay much better prices and the offer is only for the few items they need. Plus besides cash, they also give you an option of store credit which gives you a much higher payout. read more

They didn't have the book I was looking for in stock but it was a rare book, so I wasn't surprised. I asked the girl at the front counter if she could see if any of their other locations had it and she said sure. As soon as I mentioned it was a Richard Bachman book she knew said listed the title without skipping a beat. I said yup and she laughed and said "Good luck with that!" Not a good sign that they would have it but it shows she knows her books. She checked her system and much to our surprise they had two copies available in hardback at other locations. I was able to order one to have it shipped to their store and she assured me if the condition wasn't right I could get my money refunded. Great customer service from a knowledgeable employee! The two stars are for the fact that books are literally inside the store. Many wonderful versions, from the newest hardcover gems, to the occasional rare and wonderfully collectible classics. I shopped here for years even though the staff literally ignored me every time I walked in the doors. Even though any question I ever brought to the staff was met with a defensive attitude, from the general manager (who apparently likes Star Wars books but has no knowledge of any other thing about books) to the part time staff (who look annoyed at having to even BE there). Years of putting up with the environment just to be around the books and occasionally walk out with a stack. Sorry, but there are just too many other bookstores to peruse with inviting staff who are knowledgeable about their products (or at least TRY to be). The biggest surprise to me was the contempt the general manager had towards me for bringing in an older book with questions about ANYTHING about it I.e. : why it didn't have a barcode, why it wasn't dated, could he refer me to someone who could help. He told me I was in a retail store and the "system" they had had phased out the employees being able to know things about the book industry (paraphrased). He manages both locations. Most people will continue going because they don't know the difference, but they lost me as a customer because they hate their jobs. Byeeeee. read more

Poor customer service skills. No one was manning the register, waited for the woman behind counter who thought breaking down boxes was a better idea than waiting on customers. After about a good minute of staring her down she snapped at me "do you need something?" Like I was bothering her. I politely told her I was I needed help finding something, she snipped back at me "and?" When I told her author and title of the book she proceeded to just point in the general direction of the back of the store and said "in horror". I'm "in horror" at the customer service, I'll tell ya that much. Between that and the top dollar they want for dirty beat up used books you can count me out. So sad since I'd much rather support a small business than Amazon but not when I'm treated like that. read more

I was diligently searching for a particular book today, and it seemed hard to find. It was checked out in all of the local libraries and it had a lot of hold requests. I didn't want to get it from Amazon because I wanted the book ASAP and I didn't want to read it on my kindle. I remember seeing the Half Price Bookstore, so I got on Google and did some research. I called twice about two different books and each time the person on the other end of the phone was very helpful. When I called the second time and they told me they had a copy of the book I wanted, they said that they could hold it for me. When I showed up to the store, I decided to walk around for a bit, and I was so glad I did. You'll find and see things you didn't know you were looking for. Also, it was nice to walk in a place that smelled like books (my fellow bibliophiles know what I'm talking about ). You don't really get to experience that outside of some libraries. Once I got to the register, the lady that was helping me was very friendly and I was delighted to see that they sold bookmarks (those seem hard to come by these days outside of online shopping). The book is in excellent, brand new condition. I am so happy with my purchase and I love that I could support a local bookstore! read more

They purchase stolen goods. When had some issues where a family member who stole and sold our blu-rays, DVD's, CD's and books to supplement his "habit". We notified the store and they basically blew us off. This isn't the first time. We've seen out items in the store for sale but the store is remorseless. This is my favorite book store above all others even new book sellers. Admittedly I buy most of my reading material digitally now but I still like a paper book now and then. Their kids section is absolutely wonderful, we have found all of my daughter's favorites here. She picks things that I never would have expected & books that I would have thought to be too advanced for her to really like. They usually have multiple copies of all of the most recently published, popular reads as well as things that I missed when they first hit the new book stores. (I go less often now in favor of Amazon and Kindel so I miss more than I used to). I've noticed that most new book sellers have fazed out the chairs & couches. Other places seem to discourage lounging and browsing the inventory now, a real shame. Not at Half Price Books. This place still has several seating areas for customers (I wish there were a few more, sometimes they are all full). For the same price as what I spend at Barns & Noble for one or two titles I can get a pile of good quality books. I don't sell, I just buy. I can't comment on what they will pay you to take used items off your hands but I will tell you that if you are purchasing items the prices are unbeatable. A great selection of adult books that are half price from the original publisher prices and in great shape. I love any good book store and this one has so much potential! The only three stars starts at customer service which should be your first priority. In my four visits to the store, I have never been greeted by an employee or simply asked if I needed help. Horrible customer service. Do not recommend. I was returning a book I got for a friend as a gift because he had gotten the same thing just a couple days earlier. The lady with tattoos and braids behind the counter told me she couldn't do anything for me because "it's already been 30 days". I told her it had only been 28 days and I'd still like to return it. She responded "yeah just enough time to read it right?" in a condescending tone. This was extremely rude considering she had no idea why I was returning it. I was polite and calm the whole time and felt like the rude comment was unwarranted. I asked for a manager and spoke with him. Every low rating this business has is due to poor customer service. If you're looking for friendly people I wouldn't recommend this place. read more
