My daughter and I walked into this book store on a weekday, looking for a couple books (children's books) and they had it all. In the children section is labeled specifically, Disney, tv/movies and so forth. Everything else in the store is labeled the same and accurate for the most part. There's also a couple chairs and seats as well as a table if you have a need for that and not to mention they have restrooms in the back. As far as service, nobody really stood out or greeted us, I guess we were just busy looking for our books to notice. As far as pricing, it may very well be half price books, but some books seem a bit pricy. They have very old beat up books that go for the same price as newer gentler used books so not always fairly priced I'd say. read more

I was excited to see a used bookstore when I was in the area and decided to stop by. Parking is easy since it's in a shopping center. The staff here are friendly. I was immediately greeted when I walked in and the man working at the desk made some light conversation when I was checking out. They have a lot of books and they're organized pretty well. The selection didn't have much of a variety as far as what I was looking for (classics and some newer - in the past 5 yrs - titles) but I'm sure it's probably a good selection to others. The pricing matches the name of the store, I suppose. They are priced better than buying a brand new book, but they're not as cheap as buying used books from a second-hand store or a warehouse sale. It's also odd that two of the same used books will go for the exact same price when one has writing in it and the other doesn't. I'd imagine it should be cheaper. Based on some other reviews, for the amount people get for selling their books here, the resale price shouldn't be as high as it is. read more

I had such a good experience here. My new year's resolution was to buy less new, and help reduce my impact on the world. This place helped me to just that. The bookstore is incredibly organized, and offers a selection of new and used books, along with CDs, vinyls and record players. I could have spent hours in here looking at the selection. They also have a generously sized section of children's books, where I picked up two board books in near perfect condition for my 2 year old. Love to have something like this in the humble area, where I previously thought I needed to go all the way into Montrose to receive such a neighborhood gem. read more

Half Price Books Humble has renewed my love of reading. I love hardback books and their prices make it possible for me to buy books in hardback. The books are always in pretty good condition. Their staff have been friendly and I've never had to explain to anyone that I'm "Just Looking." Because, honestly, that's why I'm there. Their collection of movies is also great. We've regularly come home with a DVD along with a book or two. I do prefer when they have music playing without lyrics as opposed to sometimes when I'm there and it's a little bit less of a typical bookstore, library-esque atmosphere. That's just my preference. Selection is limited for the most part and the store itself is poorly organized. The staff here has been friendly and helpful on occasion; however, I wouldn't recommend selling your books here. You pay well for your items and even if you keep them in mint condition, they will give you a low ball offer. Once, they offered me five dollars for a stack of books, some of which were textbooks. I want to have Price books several days ago to purchase vinyl albums. After I purchase the album the young lady put my receipt on top of the album and pushed it toward me I asked for a bag she said we have gone backless but we have the ones down in front of you for sale at a dollar and something I couldn't believe what I was hearing so I told her you mean to tell me I cannot get a bag unless I buy it and I have to go to the store next door so therefore I have to take this open merchandise in the store next door I have always gone to this half price book store but I will not be going again because if you all of that broke or that's stingy that you cannot give me a bag after I make a purchase that you overcharged me for most likely I would not be doing business with you all anymore. I've been coming to this specific Half Price for YEARS. (Too many time count) But isn't the whole experience of entering a book store (esp any Half Price) to personally experience the nostalgia. I'm thankful that they are offering curbside pick up but what's Half Price if I can't spend hours sorting thru DVDs, picking through each record or comic to see if I could add anything to my collection. Finding a small nook in the back to experiment with different books before I make a purchase. Because this is a used bookstore, you really need to dedicate time to browsing the shelves. You're never sure what you're going to find. That said, I think some of the prices are a bit high for a used book, and are quite in line with the price of something brand new. If you're shopping here to be green, it's great, but don't expect to save any money. Additionally, while I like that they have a section of current, new books, those prices are quite high as well. I don't know if you can find the latest and the greatest here, but there is definitely an interesting selection of unexpected reads and other things. Everything has a super awesome reduced price. But get this: you can sell your used books BACK to this place and get a portion of your money back once you're done! And if there is anything one location doesn't have, the clerk will search the database to see if another location has what you are looking for and they'll get it shipped back to this location or even straight to you! The marquee beckoned. There it was: a Half Price Books that hubby had heard about and never been in. Like a corner dealer luring the neighborhood junkie, this user could not resist. If you are addicted to the written word (like my husband), HPB has got your stash. We've hit up every location that we stumble upon in multiple cities; some are more comprehensive than others, and we normally visit one that's situated closer to our home. But since we were in the neighborhood of this location, the urge was too much to endure. Score! Upon entering this store, I told my husband to go "do his thing." Since we've already got nearly a library of our own at home, I don't advocate feeding his obsession. But, I'll humor him. So I figured I'd mull around at the front where the vinyl/CDs/DVDs are located while he got his fix for the day. Feet! Where are you taking me? After ambling through the audio collection (a wonderful trip down memory lane with a great collection of vinyl and CDs), I found my legs somehow moving towards the children's collection. I always judge a bookstore by what it has to offer the little ones, and I SO could have pulled up one of those little chairs to sit down and stay a while. Extensive offering of all levels of books for every age: this was superior to the B & N collection in Champions, frankly. Resisting the urge to stay in the children's section, I moseyed back towards the front, meandering through the stacks to get a good look at what else this HPB has. Besides the requisite novels and non-fiction paperbacks and hardbacks, the collection of books on crafts, cooking, how-to, dogs/cats, parenting, gaming, handbooks, collectibles, textbooks, audiobooks and more was extraordinary. This is, indeed, an impressive Half Price Books. It's a clean, masterfully decorated location (yeah, look at the walls!) with a stunning array of books, audio, video, stationery and other quite interesting items that definitely merits a visit. Yes, this is my bookstore of choice. I love half price books and have been using them ever since I discovered their existence a few years ago. Now, who wouldn't want to save 50-70% on books. Yes, most of them are used books, but who cares?! They read just as well as a new one. I visited this location to find a book on puppy house training. I found a few good ones, but decided to buy "The Essential Yorkshire Terrier" published by Howell book house. I paid $3.98! I purchased another book at Petsmart and that one was $9.99, if only I would have remembered to go to half priced books first I would probably have saved at least an additional $5! I love this store for unusual gifts at reasonable prices. They have a great buy back program and the kids section is well stocked. They have a great selection of novelty and retri items and notebook/journal/sketchbooks. The best part is that everything is so inexpensive. So if you're on a budget, this is the place for you. Love the location in the Rice Village because of its location short walking distance to a coffee house, restaurant or pub afterwards. I visit the one in Humble when I dont care to drive into the city of Houston. Both have helpful associates to help with finding books when I'm having a difficult time remembering the complete title. This happens more than I like to admit. The one in the Rice Village has more seating available (repurposed church pews) making it easier to dig into a chapter or two of what I've found. I went to this location on Friday and was very disappointed by a staff member. I went in to get the teacher discount card. The guy at the register looked at me weird when I asked him about it. He said yes and just stood there looking at me, not budging to get the card or application, as if thinking to himself, "She's not really a teacher." Btw I am African American. So he says he needs to see an ID or paycheck stub, which I find odd to ask for a paycheck stub in a bookstore. I show him my ID and he takes his very slow time to get the application. I fill it out and he gives me the card. I go to look around the store and find a book. I come back and there is a white lady telling him that she's a teacher and she doesn't have her ID but shows him pictures of her class board on Pinterest. He tells her, "Yeah, I'll just give it to you," and gives her the card, with no proof of anything, nor does he make her fill out an application. I was very disgusted by how he hassled me about proof of being a teacher and making me fill out an application, but this white woman he did not. I felt that was discrimination. Most of the other staff is friendly but I am not sure if this guy was new or what his deal was, but I had never seen him there before and I am a very frequent shopper. 5 stars for being my #1 hpb location. My daughter has always had a fondness for chapter books. Since she was 2 she insisted that we get books like Junie B. Jones, Babysitters club and Amelia Bedelia. Why would I pay $15 elsewhere for a paperback when I can get it here for $2? I've had maybe a dozen friends who have worked at this location, which may attribute to my favoritism. That said, the staff here is always first class, dropping whatever they are doing to assist in your time of need. Condensed location and a lot less overwhelming than the hpb in the village. Great selection of cds, vinyls and clearance. You can find odds and ends like video games and car mp3 converters. It is very hard, in fact, to find textbooks (not just this location but any hpb in general). Recently I've been on the hunt for an illusive book for class. On the verge of spending $70 on Amazon, my love made some calls around town. He found said book here and had it held for me until after work. It's a nail biting, gut wrenching experience pulling into the parking lot, hoping someone did their job. Low and behold, when I asked for my book, it was there! Delivered with a smile! Reading is something we should all encourage, not only for our peers but for our children. It can be hard to do when you are spending buttloads on mint books that take less than a day to read, only to collect dust on your bookshelf until there is a rainy day with nothing to do. When I tell you my experience at this store you will throw up in your mouth because it is horrific! On a personal note I gave birth to a stillborn son six weeks ago. The baby's father couldn't handle the grief and moved to the East Coast (where he's from originally). In a desperate attempt to make money I put my sweet baby's furniture and all of my treasured possessions (the ones of any value) into a consignment shop. Theodore's father and I are both voracious readers of all topics, we would buy books by the pound and huge quantities in bulk from estate sales. He had quite a collection of books about the history of music, furniture construction, woodworking, building, architecture, travel, classic literature, the interpretation of great poetry, and metaphysical phenomena. While I had every book about the foundations of every great fashion house, the history of clothing design, sewing, knitting, bookbinding, writing, and creative organization techniques. We had fifteen 22" x 16" x 6" boxes full of books which I loaded into my vehicle and drove 58 minutes to a place called Half-Price books where I hoped to sell them and make enough to at least pay my car insurance. I had run a check on Amazon Seller on one of the boxes of books and the total value of that box was $231. I just couldn't wait for them to sell I needed the money now. It took the guy who unloaded my vehicle multiple trips with a dolly to unload all the boxes. While they went through and priced the hundreds of books I found 5 books on grieving the death of a child and dealing with stillbirth. My heart felt lifted as I read the jackets of these books because I wasn't the only one going through this heart-crushing devastation. I put the books on the counter and went out to my car to cry while they finished totaling up the books. After an hour I was called to the counter and told my offer was $30. To which my response was; "American?" The guy (who was 60 and had freaking enormous barbells in his ears) says: "yeah, cash...take it or leave it..." "what is the trade value?" "we offer a single amount cash is same as trade". I looked down at a book that happened to be on the top of one of the many, many piles it was my latest awesome read by Reese Witherspoon called: 'Whiskey in a Teacup: What Growing Up in the South Taught Me About Life, Love, and Baking Biscuits'. It also happens to be like number 2 or 3 on the Amazon top sellers list (it sells for $20.99 on Amazon and the cover price is $35). Half-Price books sell all of their books for half the cover price (hence the clever name) so they were going to sell that ONE book for $17.50 (so what percentage do I get out of the $17.50 get? Even if I received 30% which is pretty standard for resale I would have made $5.25, and that is only one out of hundreds (many of which were rare and early editions). I didn't have the energy to tell them to fuck off and box all those books back up and drive them back to the storage unit and unload them in the rain. I just started to cry and went up to the cashier to get my whopping $30 (which is probably what I spent on gas to get there) and he said all chipper; "ready to check out?" and he grabbed my stack of books about how to deal with having a dead baby. "um no, the total on those five books is $47.50 and I just made $30 on a few hundred" I said this with huge tears hitting the counter as I passed then check out slip to the guy. "oh man, that sucks". Was he serious? I had to practically crawl out of the store I was so defeated. Oh! I almost forgot the best part, they make you take your containers and boxes out of the store when you leave. Luckily I had been taking them a few at a time as the worked. So I only had to carry a plastic tub when I made my final exit. I sat in the car and cried because in all honesty all I really wanted was to leave with; 'Empty Cradle, Broken Heart: Surviving the Death of Your Baby' by Deborah L Davis, 'Always Within; Grieving the Loss of Your Infant' by Melissa L Eshleman, 'Broken Crayons Still Color: From Our Mess to God's Masterpiece' by Shelley Hitz and Deb Hall, 'Almost a Mother: Love, Loss, and Finding Your People When Your Baby Dies' by Christy Wopat, and 'Shattered: Surviving the Loss of a Child' by Gary Roe. in my arms. I'm done with Barnes and Noble. Half Price Books is where it's at. This particular location is situated just next to Deerbrook Mall in Deerbrook Plaza (the Google Maps shown on this profile is wrong). From the exterior, it looks unassuming. But once you walk in, it's rows and rows of every book imaginable. And they sell more than used books. They also sell newer titles, as well as CDs, DVDs and VHS tapes (yes, tapes). HPB also has a nice selection of comic books. The best part? The prices are just right. You can expect to pay around $4 to $10 for most books, depending on what you're getting. I love coming here to get cookbooks, reference books, and parenting books (such as Toddler 411 and Your Baby Week by Week). They've got 'em all. And they also have a hefty children's book section. I was really surprised to see a HPB of this size in the Kingwood area. But I'm so glad it's there! read more

I've recently started grad school. Half-Price has been a life-saver. While their selection of "actual" textbooks leaves a bit to be desired - there aren't too many of them and what they have is kinda old - I've been fortunate in that my profs aren't using "actual" textbooks, but production books. I've been able to buy about 1/2 my books here or at HBP online, saving massive amounts of money. The center they're in is a tad bit nuts some times for traffic, and they really could put a few more reading areas, or just chairs out for people to peruse books....other than that, I have no complaints. read more

Along with a great selection of reasonably priced books, they also have an awesome selection of vinyls! As well as DVDs/CDs/VHS and all sorts of other things. Overall, the store was laid out nicely, the staff was super friendly and it has the type of environment where you can just sit and read and take your time. This is my favorite book store in Houston. Even better, it is pretty close to where I live. I could spend hours in this store browsing it aisle by aisle. You never know what treasure you are going to find around the next corner. The staff are very nice and helpful. I've bought and sold books here many times. They have a great selection to choose from. Books are stacked from the floor to the ceiling. However, they are expertly arranged and so it is never too difficult to find what you are looking for. They have free wifi which is a nice perk. They just about always have a coupon that you can use to save even more money. I like the eclectic music that they play while you are browsing. I wish that they would be just a little more generous on their offers to buy my books back. But, I realize that they are a business and have to make money. I get it. I also wish that they offered coffee in store to enjoy while browsing or reading. Great store. I'm a customer for life. read more

Second time i went and last...the first time it was ok. Good prices and good environment but the second time.... Some of the Staff is rude and by some i mean the "BIG" tall guy who buys books. He is a huge jerk. We were donated a couple of books and decided to sell them to them because we were moving...since Their supposed to take books in any condition. The books were in really good condition. We had 4 full baskets and he called us in less than 5 minutes and said he found a bookworm and made us bad for taking books and kept saying it really loud. People were staring i was like "we get it!" But he kept going on and on and making us feel like dirt...he was like take them away from me i dont want to contaminate my books. Nor touch them.What a jerk he even said that he was going to destroy the books of we left them. And gave us books back that were not ours he kept a few books aswell because we were had baskets empty. read more
