Literally 50% of the books in here are about Katie Price (Jordan). That's why I love the store, because it's half Price books. Village Real is a good shopping center and they have a Half Price Books in it, and have a bunch of other stuff here so it's worth checking out if you happen to be in the neighbourhood. The Half Price Books is exactly what it says on the tin. Cheap books of all kinds and pretty damn useful if you ask me. Especially considering the price of books these days at real big box or fancy bookstores - and even online can be expensive. This is a much better discount type place. read more

Came here to get some cash from these books I used for school. The staff made me feel welcome, which was a huge turnaround from the time I called last year. My previous one-star review of this business was a result of a man who couldn't be bothered with helping me find a test guide. It took give or take ten minutes for my books to be appraised. I received $30 in return. That's more than I would get post-finals at a certain school whose name I'll keep a secret. Aside from scoring a reasonable amount of cash for my tomes, I enjoyed perusing their vinyl section. Among the neat artists I came across were Michael Jackson, The Sex Pistols, The Beatles, and Earth, Wind & Fire. My adolescent self would've gone crazy with his allowance. My 35-year-old self, however, didn't buy any records since I don't have a turntable. Sad! When I received my money, I told the nice girl at the counter that I'll remember the business when my three remaining semesters come to an end. read more

I enjoyed my visit to the store. It was well kept and organized. I enjoyed how the staff put out little notes under some of their favorite books. The pricing was great. A small but good selection or vinyl records. I could spend hours in there. I definitely plan to return again. The only thing keeping me from a 5 star review is at no point did any of the associates speak to us. We found that a bit unusual. I found this store to be a flashback to a store in the NYC Village from the 70s. Very eclectic and quirky. Not just the goods but the people also. This was good and refreshing. There is alot to go through. Vinyl, comic books, books and more books, writing cards, journals, gifts and really low priced clearance sales. I bought a real leather Bible version that I have actively been looking for at $3!!! I am told if you sign up for their newsletter you get discount coupons. We stopped in here after visiting NASA just to see what was there. I found a few cool things like some anime DVDs and some comics and things. It's not the cheapest store in the world but it's also not super expensive either and there are a few gems to be found if you don't mind digging for them. I did notice that some of the books were currently published books but they were minorly defected like bent covers and that's probably why they're on a discount? But other than that I didn't have any problems coming here the lady at the counter was talking to us about some of the stuff that my friend had bought and everyone seemed pretty friendly. A great location for the store, convenient to NASA Parkway and El Camino Real. Medium sized, it's the kind of place you want to go to find something different, not a place to go where you are looking for something specific. The books in each, well defined genre, section are sorted well considering it's a mishmash of out of print books along with newer editions. I like the selection of DVDs, especially if you're looking for something different. The prices are easy on the pocketbook. Older, not as good of shape books can be under $10. Nothing is near recommended price, you can get several good books for under $50 total. The parking lot is large and easy to park. It can be tough to get to during heavy traffic times, given that it's just as the NASA Bypass reunites with NASA Parkway. Depending on which way you're coming from, you may have delays. I have not tried to sell any books but no, you won't get a big payout. Unfortunately book supply exceeds demand. Don't expect to unload your long lost treasurers for much more than a few bucks. They sell gift cards as well. Worth a stop every now and then to see what's new. Although I don't see much turnover in inventory like a new book story. read more

The women who are current employees are rude and controlling especially in the buying counter. They can't decide what the return policies are and where to put the offered books in their cluttered area, so they make arbitrary and random demands on customers. Poor listening skills, inflexible customer service skills, and open scoffing at any requests make trusting their offers nearly impossible. They can't seem to pronounce names correctly even after asking how to pronounce it. While they lack kind and professional female employees, they have a large selection of used books, unique collectables, great albums, and rare items. Hopefully they will do better hiring practices and customer service training. read more

I have been a customer here for many years, and rarely stop in without picking up a few titles. Over the years we have also sold things here as well. Today, I drove up with a few boxes of things to sell, and because of traffic, made it to the buy back counter at 5:03 PM, only to be rudely told that they stop buying at 5:00. When my wife pointed out it was 5:03, the guy even more rudely said that was their policy. I told them that it was ridiculous that they were going to lose a long time customer because of 3 minutes, and luckily another employee overheard and intervened. I get that there needs to be rules, but there also needs to be flexibility. You've lost a customer for good over this. read more

I'm so happy that I can do more than food reviews on Yelp because this Half Price Books needs a wake up call. I hate to wish bad on anyone but the manager and the person that prices everything needs to be fired immediately. This place used to be a gold mine of excellent prices on video games. Even back then, you could bring in 100 games to sell and they would give you 20 bucks if you are lucky. I was ok with this because I'm not stupid enough to sell to them and I'm buying games from them for 1/2 price and sometimes even 1/3 their actual value. At the end of the day it all balances out. It's smart business. Those days are over because now every video game or system is higher priced than Ebay prices. Half Price Books corporate office pay attention to me. A person comes in and sells you a game that sells consistently on Ebay for 30 bucks. You buy it from him for 2 dollars and then you sell it to the consumer for 15 dollars. Everybody is happy. Stop being so greedy and overcharging the people that are keeping your business afloat during these tough times. You are not Ebay.. I'm ready to start a boycott of this location. Today I went in there and noticed they are selling a Ps2 for $99.99!!!! Are you freaking kidding me? Is the manager an idiot? At this location there are video games priced 2xs their actual value. They had a heavy set guy working at the buy back counter for years. Ever since he left this place has been trash. Every Half Price Books in our city needs to change their philosophy on pricing but this Nasa location is the worst. Here is my other issue with this place and another example of it's poor management. They keep games on the shelves that are overpriced for years and very rarely adjust price and move them to clearance section. Their clearance policy is nonexistent here. I used to love this place. Unfortunately I'm no longer a fan. I brought in over 150 books (almost all of which i purchased there) and they only offered me $16.00 for them all. I didn't even have enough to buy the 4 new books I found. I could have been ok with this - but the staff were very cold and unfriendly - not even a single smile. Better off to give your books away to goodwill and get a tax write off. I'll be using my kindle more going forward. read more

HPB is my top favorite store of any store. I don't even want to know how much money I've spent at the many locations I've visited. They have great prices and often have sales on top of that. I've found lots of hard-to-find books here and gotten into quite a few new comics because of the discounted prices on sets. I don't do the book buybacks or sell anything to the store so I don't really have anything to say about that but I often hear people say they don't offer much so that's probably true, which is the one negative I can think of. But if you're just going in to buy stuff then it's a great place. It's definitely a place to visit when you have time to browse because it's easy to spend over an hour here. If you have the chance to visit the original one in Dallas, it's worth it! It's gigantic. It's the biggest location I've been to and I think their largest store. I've gotten Tom Sawyer for $0.50, incredible. I don't think I've ever gotten books in person cheaper anywhere else. It has a pretty comparable selection and it's all *really* well-organized. Because of how they receive their books a lot of stuff is put together and perhaps not perfectly categorized but if I know what I'm looking for it's pretty easy to hunt it down. One of those hole in the wall cozy locations. Although half price is a franchise, this one seems more homey-they have cats running around and stuff plus the people are super helpful and attentive. I always leave with no less than 5 books. BUT i also feel like this place is one where you have to really dig sometimes..but when you do you will find all sorts of neat books and some that you didn't even know you wanted. They have a clearance rack that is normally out front plus dvds, cds and toys. The parking is kinda annoying because of the traffic and construction off on HWY 3. I could literally spend hours in Half Price Books rummaging through the shelves for a good find. I think you actually have to in order to find the good stuff but it's definitely worth the effort. The last time I went in, I probably was in there for at an hour and the awesome staff were nothing but helpful. Even though Half Price Books is a chain, you wouldn't know it. It's amazing what things you can find in that store if you really look. They have everything from books, cool gifts, DVDs, records and a great clearance section as well. I have never left half price books emptyhanded. This clear lake location is my favorite because it is closest to my house and because of that we have a relationship of convenience.=) I love that hpb gives me a 10% discount for being a teacher, when I am *only* a homeschooling teacher. I have the most luck at the Rice Village location, in so far as finding *the* book I was looking for. But, I also have had hundreds of dollars of "luck" at this location, too. I love the people that work at this, and all half price books. They are usually so intelligent,bookish and cool. They are a different breed than the person who has themselves together enough to open, own, pay taxes and keep lonely vigil over a used bookstore of their own. Of course one person in the shop is the owner ( I assume) but they are all so cool, I can't differentiate amongst them. Although you would make more money selling your books at a garage sale, it's their discriminating selection that makes for such a wonderful collection of books for sale. This place has an enormous clearance section including adult books, VHS movies, kid books and movies and even games for just a dollar. This is one of those places that you cannot leave empty-handed. They even have a section dedicated to computer games, (which are usually old and will not work on Windows XP and older), antique books (some are worth quite a pretty penny) and audiobooks. I was disappointed in the selection and price when it came to the audiobooks. We are on the road 24/7 and love a good murder/mystery when we're driving through the country at 2A.M. We usually pay anywhere from 14.99-20.99 at truck stops so I was expecting a cheaper price at HALF-priced books, right? Wrong. You can find almost any book you want here, but they do not have a system that has a list or location of the book, so be prepared for lots of browsing. This is great for those who don't want to pay Barnes and Nobles or Walmart prices. The cashier was extraordinarily friendly and helpful, the store was clean and tidy and they had a lot of books on sale for extremely cheap. Check it out! read more

The Clear Lake Half Price Books is one of the most underrated locations in the greater Houston area. The atmosphere is fun and laid back with a rich blend of culture and geekery. If you're looking for something specific, the store is incredibly well stocked in the areas of science, engineering, technology, and computers. One of the unique highlights of the store is the massive collection of everything aerospace, featuring many limited run first editions of space history and nostalgia books you simply won't find anywhere else. If you're looking for discount books, this is also one of the few locations which organizes the clearance shelves, so while you're less likely to find hidden treasures, cheap reads are easy to locate. read more

Ah, Half-Price, my old nemesis. I've shopped there quite a bit since my last review, and my experiences have generally been positive. Even the grumpy old sandalista has been nicer. The company is starting to give off a vibe of desperation: because fewer people are actually buying real books (I'm sure), Half Price is doubling down on their tactic of offering shite for books from customers, hiring even less friendly people, and raising prices above the half-price mark. This, presumably, is their business model to increase sales. Anyway, as I said, I've spent a lot of money at this location over the last few years. Sometimes the little irritations should build up beyond the resigned sigh that I usually make when I leave the place. Yesterday I found a book in very good condition for $5.99, which was fine, just fine. I was willing to pay it. But... the cover price was $9.99, so I thought that if I asked if I might have it at the cover price, they'd say yes. The cashier did not. After first quoting to me the Canadian $ price as being accurate, I brought the American price to her attention, and she simply said, "That's the going rate"--meaning, like market prices for fresh seafood or the price of commodities on the stock market--their is a flexible going rate for used Victor Hugo novels that might change daily, presumably as a result of investor confidence in the CPI or something. I just politely said okay and paid. Look: I know that I'm spending precious minutes from my life quibbling about $1.50. I suppose I'm just venting. It just irritates me, because there were 3 copies of the same Victor Hugo book next to it, all of which were in pretty shabby condition (one had a sizeable corner of the cover torn off). They have no shame about selling abused books for half-off, and we all know in our collective souls that they wouldn't ever lower the price because of, you know, really low quality. It might have been a pricing error, but I think that they just raised the price on that book because it was in good condition. Which brings me to the following question: Where do those abused books come from? Having seen so many ragged, creased, and even torn paperbacks on their shelf (for the full half-price, so to speak), I have, on occasion, hazarded to sell 1 or 2 of my own that were considerably less than half-way pristine. I thought that maybe they'd give me a nickel; maybe, if the stock market was bullish, they might even give me a dime. No, every time they turned them down (and I don't blame them). But, they have the audacity to sell lots of other books in worse conditions. Maybe they buy those books from other people. I'm probably on their shite list. Who knows. Half Price books is, I think, owned by folks who are either top-hatted plutocrats kicking orphans to the curb, or they are just a bunch of grumpy old sandalistas at the very top also. Worst half price books ever. If you don't live in the suburbs literally do not go here. I was going to sell a bunch of my designer books that were regularly over $200 and they offered me $5.... Went to the half price books in montrose and they bought my books for way more. Never going here again. read more
