My neighbor told me about this annual plant sale, since she has a nice garden and I'm redesigning my courtyard with her help. I wanted to add to my succulent and tree collection. We got super lucky parking in the shade, on Iwaena, 5 mins away from the Halalwa Board of Water Plant Sale. Saw multiple free shuttle pick up points and after waiting 5 mins; and hearing word of the traffic backed up on the hill, we decided to walk up to the next shuttle pick up point. Soon enough we saw the mini school bus and got on! Haha! It was hot and humid but glad we didn't wait too long. We arrived at 10:30am; got our raffle tickets and checked-in! So many people were walking with Cardboard boxes full of plants. I brought my plastic bin and hand truck to roll my goodies. There was a Yelp check-in free gift and so we got it - (a plastic drip monitor thing for your faucet) then we took pics and posted online for their prizes. Next, we went to see the succulent displays and soon bumped into my neighbor who told me about this! It was fun taking pics. After, we moved to the plant, shrubs, and baby tree area. I learned so much about Native Hawaiian trees. After 2 hours I finally chose my 4 baby Kukui Nut Trees for $20 and one baby Stephanotis for $3. Prices are reasonable and although it was humid, they had chairs in the shade to sit or nap on, haha!

What a great oasis in the middle of an industrial area in Halawa! First heard of it when I saw a posting online about free xeric seedlings and sent the hubby the first time ... he came back with a great bromeliad pup and all kinds of info about the garden. For February they ran out quickly of the heart-shaped hoya seedlings but had other Hoya varieties ... I plan to get each one they offer this year! The garden is located at the end of a dead end street - don't be fooled by all the warehouses on the way, there's really a garden back there! You'll pass a couple of buildings on the way to the parking lot - after parking, you'll go up to the building closest to the entrance to get your seedling from the friendly representative. Afterward you should take some time to wander the garden across from the building... it's got some great specimens of various cacti and other xeric plants that grow well in dry conditions. You should also check out their workshop offerings - I'll be coming back for some of those as well!

Nestled above the Halawa Valley Industrial District, the Halawa Xeriscape Garden is a quaint botanical garden aimed at demonstrating "unthirsty" and native plants. From bromeliads to hibiscus, Koa trees to Kou plants, desert roses to bougainvillea - the garden showcases a variety of native and unthisty plants that require minimal watering to thrive. The Board claims that xeriscape techniques - which include using unthirsty plants, efficient irrigation, mulching, etc. - can save customers 30-80% in outdoor water consumption. These are some money saving plants! The Board and the Friends of Halawa Xeriscape Garden also offer periodic gardening workshops and fun keiki activities. They have fostered partnerships with the Pearl City Urban Garden Center, UH College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources and other organizations to host educational workshops pertaining to composting, spiral gardening, wreath decorating and much more. A schedule of workshops is available on their website, www.boardofwatersupply.com. Additionally, visitors can pick up free mulch every Saturday! Just sign in at the office, bring your own shovels and containers and you can take as much as you can carry! Very cool. Lastly, the Board hosts an annual open house and plant sale on the first Saturday of August. The event is huge and is always a great time. The garden is owned and operated by the Honolulu Board of Water Supply and is currently open to the public on Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. You may call the Board at 748-5000 or visit www.boardofwatersupply.com for more information.

The garden itself is kinda small, and pretty well hidden amongst its industrial neighbors, but once there this place is a gem.

I agree with previous reviewers in that this really is a hidden gem. Very humble and easily over looked. I just randomly came by to practice some photography and kill time. I took the time to read all the signs and found that the amount of community effort really makes this place extra special. It takes some interesting navigation to walk through every pathway and check out all that the garden offers. But overall this is a really small, humble garden. It is definitely a place that you can come to take a breather or relax. This place from what I know does offer workshops, you can leave more about it when you check in with the security guard. The parking lot is small, but enough to accommodate the amount of people who visit. Bathrooms are available here.

This review is mainly for the annual plant sale the Board of Water Supply hosts. They have a variety of plants that don't require water to grow or also known as perennial plants. The main reason why my mom loves buying these type of plants and you save water. It's a surprise how many people have been attending this sale since this event started. It's even a surprise how the prices for the plants have gone up since it was first started. My mom noticed they raised up the prices. Their check out lines need improvement. They have separate tables for those paying cash, credit card, and checks. My mom was getting ready to pay for the plants when another person cut in front of us and we had to wait for the next cashier. The person directing the customers to which table to pay for the plants need to give clear directions and ask all customers to wait until the next cashier is available. It was confusing where we could stand before purchasing the plants. The Board of Water Supply was passing out free mulch per person. They even provided free activities for the children and Hawaii Electric and the State Agriculture had their own booths with information packets, games and free prizes to give out. There is a food and drink booth for purchase after browsing the aisles of plants and checking out the beautiful garden full of varies plants. I personally believe this place offers great educational opportunities for the children to learn about mother nature and how to care for these different species of plants. who knows maybe one day they want to grow up to become a botanist or work in the agriculture field. Free shuttle transportation is provided for those who do not want to walk or have trouble walking. There are green signs posted on the sidewalks on both sides for pick up or drop off. Handy service for the elderly customers. This sale is usually held in the beginning of August each year. Come down and bring your hats, sunglasses, and sunscreen because it's hot down there.

Been wanting to visit here for years as the last time was probably in elementary school for a field trip, and I forgot what exactly was here. It was closed during and after covid for years, then reopened to private functions only, and had no idea when it was reopened to the public. $10 for adults ($4 for Kama'aina and military) 7 for ages 6-12, under 6 (and Kama'aina and military) is free. Moanalua Gardens is conveniently located right next to the H-1 freeway. Heading westbound direction is very easy. Note: the parking entrance is literally right before the off ramp. Look for the "Moanalua Gardens" signs. Take the Tripler exit. Look for the entrance on the right. If you're on the off-ramp, you passed it. But that's okay! You can make a right (H-1 eastbound, you'll make a left at the Triper off-ramp), then left on Mahiole St, and turn in the next driveway. You'll drive through the service entrance to the parking lot. Plenty of parking! Pay at the entrance kiosk where they also sell snacks and drinks. Once inside, there's a moss/algae and leaf filled pond. There's koi fish, but the water is dark and murky, you can barely see their bright colors. King Kamehameha V's cottage that looks like a like a usual house. A Chinese style structure that looks like it has seen better days. Both are not accessible. As for the rest, the "Hitachi" monkeypod trees are all well maintained. Even though, there's PLENTY of monkeypod trees around the island, there's not many that's grown in this wide, umbrella shaped figure with branches close to the ground. Overall, it's cool to see the umbrella shaped Hitachi trees in a wide open, park-like space, but the other areas are not very well-maintained. There's not much else to do with some places restricted making it difficult to appreciate the history and importance. Charging $10 regular entrance fee, even the $4 Kama'aina fee, isn't worth it to just go in a what is basically a park. Isn't Hitachi paying atleast $400,000 per year to use the image of the tree in their advertising?

Entree fees are a bit pricey if u not a kamaaina @ $10, so minus a star. Restrooms available, no food or drink to buy, so bring your own bentos and mat, only about 4 tables. And its hawaii, so ants and flies!

I actually haven't really enjoyed this park as a park proper because I simply transit through it to get to the hiking trail (also the campsite appears to be closed off), but it has enough amenities that I was left impressed. There are benches to sit with overhead shelters. Bathrooms helped me clean up after I got caught up in mud along the trail. The sinks were outside the lockable portion, so running water is always available thankfully. There are places to sit and be in community with the gorgeous trees around. I heard the Oahu Amakihi at this altitude even, which was a pleasant and rather welcome surprise. The park warden is a self-described grumpy old man, but he was responsive and helpful when I knocked on his door to report a water leak at the entrance of the Aiea Loop Trail.

Anyway this is the park that you enter in order to get to the Aiea Loop Trail with breathtaking views from the coastline thru the beautiful Halawa Valley with H3 smack in the middle. The Heiau is well marked and as a Hawaiian Spiritual place it is noted that it is to be respected as such. When you enter the park the Heiau is immediately on your left and parking in marked stalls is required. There are restroom facilities next to the covered pavilion and walkways from one to another. The path to walk into the Heiau is uneven and not easy to access so watch your step if you intend to walk around. I've seen feral chickens, feral pigs, feral cats and campers here. Permits are required for the campers not so much for the aforementioned animals. Dogs are required to be on leash. Beautiful and cooler temperature wise. The drive up Aiea Heights Drive isn't as perilous as others comment about but you do need to pay attention.

For the early stages of the project Angel was the primary foreman of the job. Angel was very friendly and respectful. He would give us updates on what they would be doing for the next couple of days, or if they wouldn't be coming due to weather conditions. As a client this was great because we never had to wonder whether the contractors were coming or not. Our Project consisted of removing existing cement pavers and vegetation. And installation of new turf, irrigation system, and vinyl fence. JBL took care of hauling away all the old materials and bringing all the new materials/plants for our project. Jeff was more than fair to us and he worked with us to make sure we were satisfied with how it turned out. Our home looks completely transformed now, and our dogs finally have a yard that they can play in. If you need trustworthy, reliable, and friendly landscapers I highly recommend giving Jeff a call.

There was a very helpful, friendly worker who gave me a box, lined with plastic (to prevent leaking) for my purchases. She guided me through the decision-making process and explained that this location in the mall is good for these houseplants because the natural light comes in from the ceiling. Everything regarding service requested, quality and value were all completed at a high level of excellence. This is only about the third yelp review I have ever done even though I use yelp often. I rarely take the time to write reviews unless it is truly phenomenal and monkey man definitely deserves my time and an outstanding review! First of all, his reviews already spoke for themselves, so I took his impeccable history and decided to give him a call. I then realized that I didn't need to look into any other vendors because this was the guy I needed. When I called him, he answered the phone and willingly offered to help out. He was willing to come that same day or later in the week, but that wasn't going to work for me so we were able to plan for the next week. Don't forget to message and follow up with him because he's a busy man! On the day of the project he was a little behind, but nothing crazy, and I rather have someone with a great attitude and very reasonable price versus someone more prompt but charges an arm and a leg. The most impressive characteristic about monkey man is that he was willing to support the youth that we were sending to a conference. I ended up giving him more $ than he requested because I know the job he did was way beyond what he asked. I looked into renting a lift, but that was really pricey, and I would still need to get a chainsaw and be careful with the neighbors property and cable wires so it was definitely a wise choice to hire a professional like the monkey man versus trying to possibly save money but risk my life or potentially damaging my neighbors property or something else! I've cut many trees myself, but not one of this size so having monkey man was well worth it. He even went the extra mile to make some cutting boards for the neighbors who requested. I cannot guarantee that he will do the same favors for you/your neighbors; however, I have confidence he will provide his best service at a reasonable price & I do not believe that you will be disappointed. Bottom line: I just wanna give a big MAHALO to Monkey Man and look forward to hopefully doing more business in the future. God bless you!
