Summary: top 10% in the neighborhood for price to value/portion, food was super hot and fresh, owners/family were friendly, seating area was clean/spotless, parking can be tricky. We'll come back and try out some more things on the menu! Overview This place has been on my list for awhile because the menu is straightforward and relatively inexpensive. We shop at Rancho across the street frequently and it's easy to miss the restaurant if you're not looking for it. You'll need to park on the street if you're picking up an order. Service 5/5 Greeted warmly when we walked in, easy to order, friendly service, and food was ready in ~5 minutes as promised. We didn't have to wait in line. We were able to customize the spice level and sauces when ordering. I always hesitated to order online from their website because it seems like you can't easily customize your spice level or sauces, you can only remove veggies or add assorted extras for an up-charge. Food 4/5 We ordered chicken & rice + 2 falafel for $16.85 (falafel was an extra $1.50) and the takeout box was HEAVY and HOT. We were shocked with how much food we got for the price - we each had our own portion and at least one portion was left over for the next day. Veggies: seemed super fresh! The red onions were quite acrid and overpowering but there weren't too many in the whole mix. Falafel & sauce: the falafel was crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and had good flavor overall. I love my salt, but the white sauce on the side for the falafel was extra salty and a bit distracting; otherwise, it had decent flavor. Chicken & rice: the chicken was shredded with a tomato-based sauce. It didn't blow me away but it wasn't bad at all! Honestly, I was expecting more seasoning or distinct flavors, so I'm going to assume the spicy sauce (or another one they offer) is the way to go. The rice was perfect - fluffy, not dry, and plentiful. You can get a huge meal for a decent price here which is a big selling point and why I rated it so highly. The only place that beats Halal Shop on value in the neighborhood is down the street at La Esperanza, where you can get a massive albeit simple burrito for a few bucks. I had a tough time deciding between 4 or 5 stars, so I think the things that bump them up are 1) the price for what you get is close to unbeatable 2) restaurant looked super clean and well-maintained 3) service was some of the fastest we've experienced. Hands down one of the best halal foods I've had! Cleanliness was over the top, plating was great, portions were amazing, service was top tier, and food was delicious! I came in during lunch break at work & I asked the employee what I should get & she recommended the chicken tikka over rice. I also added 1 baklava (so so good) + a canned soda. The wait was -- none, it was quick! Once I found a spot to eat it, I opened up my bag of food, and then that thing was hefty! I opened it up and bam ! The smell just rushed into my nostrils & I got excited. I took bites of the salad first & the salad was fresh and was well dressed. I then grabbed some some chicken & it was the best thing I've ever had. Flavorful, not dry, and the right amount of spice!! And drowning in the good sauce. I stopped in after some meetings in the area and was excited to try their food. Parking is street parking, but there seems to be a good amount on the street right next to the restaurant. The space has a pop of bright colors inside and on the outside facade. They also have a good amount of seating inside. They have chicken options, combos, Afgan options, lamb, beef, and veggie options as well as boba and teas. I ordered a Lamb Gyro ($9.99) and Seekh Kabob ($12.99) for take out and planned to bring it home. It wasn't busy when I stopped in so they started making my food right away. I took a seat and waited and was on my way not too much later. When I got home the food was still hot and was packed really nicely. The gyro was hefty and had a good amount of meat and veggies. I do wish that the meat was in bigger strips of lamb versus the smaller chunks of meat, but the flavor was really good. The Seekh Kabob was also a generous portion and the kabobs had some good spice to them. The salad mix that came with was also fresh and flavorful. There was a lot of rice as well. If I visit again I'd explore more items from the menu and probably try one of their drinks. read more

After driving regularly past this shop for years and always saying I need to stop and try them...I finally did. Walking into the restaurant immediately was impressed with how clean and new looking everything was. I ordered the lamb over rice with a piece of baklawa and the cashier was friendly and service was fast. Portions were large, quality was good and packaged in a good container for takeout. Food is decent. It very close to my house so it in convenient. The staff is really nice. I have worked in restaurants all my life and not being able to tip them through square is a disservice to the staff. The tips pay the tax on the tips. There is no reason to not let the staff get the majority of there tips. No one carries cash anymore. Not sure why the owner would not let his staff get closer to a livable wage. read more

I live in Oak Park and noticed Halal Shop as I was driving towards Broadway on Stockton. I immediately pulled over so my husband and I could grab a bite to eat. When we walked in, it looked very well put together, not like a mom and pop shop, so my first assumption that it was a franchise. The food was pretty good, what you would expect from a small, to-go, food shop. while that is correct, it is in paperwork only. I dug around on the internet to see whether or not it was a nationwide chain. What I found was that it was a two location franchise. That was odd to me. I went in the next day for lunch again, for my husband and I. We got variations of the same thing from the first day that we went for lunch. That visit, I was able to talk to the gentleman running the counter. He told me that the two locations that I found listed are owned by family members. so, and paperwork only, it is a franchise. They started out as a food truck for over 10 years, from what I can gather. I love being able to support local, small, family-owned businesses. In regard to the food, my husband and I got the loaded fries, which is basically a gyro on a bed of fries without the pita bread. Husband got chicken and I got lamb. The second day, husband got lamb gyros and I got the loaded lamb fries. The lamb was a little dry both times and the fries, after being under sauce, and in moisture from the heat of the meat, weren't crispy. I know this is a very particular preference, so the next time I will ask for the fries to be very well done so they can hold up under the environment. What I was impressed with the most, was the customer service, and the freshness of the veggies on the food. I asked about the food source, and they use a Halal distributor. The gentleman shared with me that they have fresh/perishable ingredients delivered every few days. They don't have ingredients sitting in their cold storage for weeks on end. This was a perfect little place to grab a meal after being at the Med Center or DMV nearby. Highly recommend because of the customer service. Food is decent.
