Old Bukhara - Kebab combo platter

We ordered a pumpkin samsa, an order of beef manti (5 pieces), and the Samarkand plov. The pumpkin samsa was delicate and flaky, with a filling that struck a nice balance of pumpkin and seasonings. The beef manti were exceptional. The dumpling skin was super thin yet held the flavorful broth and tender meat inside. The Samarkand plov came with a generous amount of meat--a mix of beef, lamb, sausage, and two quail eggs. All of the meat was tender and not fatty. If I had to nitpick, I would say there could have been a bit more rice for balance, but at $23 it's hard to complain considering how much meat they give. The restaurant is pretty small but has a warm, inviting ambiance, decorated heavily with traditional Uzbek metalwork and textiles. For two people half of the food was enough to feel full, and we ate the rest for dinner. Altogether the meal came to a little over $50, a great price for the portions and quality. I'm from Queens and Old Bukhara easily stands alongside the best Uzbek spots in Rego Park and southern Brooklyn.

The food is outstanding and the people are very friendly and extremely welcoming. My "go-to" dish is the chicken and rice platter with salad. As mentioned, the food quality is exceptional, very flavorful and always fresh. Chicken chunks are very tender and well seasoned. The rice is delicious and the salad is always fresh, crisp and cold. They have a wide variety of sauces and they always ask if you need more. And, yes, the platters are enormous. It is literally impossible to walk out of this place feeling hungry. The Halal Spot also has lamb, falafel, butter chicken and wide variety of other dishes. So if you are looking for a place that serves outstanding food, enormous portions that is reasonably priced. Your "go-to" spot should be The Halal Spot. Yes, it is that good!

I ordered the paneer platter and it was ok. I feel there was more rice than the paneer given. I wish there was a spice level option as well because I like spicy food. The web page pictures are misleading because for one the Makhni in the picture is more of a yellow curry base, whereas what I got was more of a red-orange (more so the color shown in the tikka masala image). My friend ordered the butter chicken and it was the same deal with the color, but I also have never had either dish before with a more yellow curry base so lol I just wanted to say it's inconsistent. We also ordered the Heavenly Hummus to share. Hummus was good, pita was good, but whatever was spread on top of the pita to make it a "garlic bread" was very strange tasting. We didn't particularly enjoy that portion of the pita.

Halal Guys is a fast, casual type of place that has dine-in or carry out options. There's plenty of seating if you choose to eat in. I'm here close to once a week and they have never let me down. My go-to order is a regular platter with half spicy BBQ chicken ($1.00 upcharge) and half regular chicken. Add onions and white sauce, and I'll take a packet of the hot sauce to go. Total cost is under $16.00 for a good amount of food. All platters come with lettuce, tomatoes, rice, and pita. There are several free toppings as well as ones that are available at an additional charge. Highly recommend you get a good serving of the white sauce and if you're brave, add a line of the red sauce. I usually like mild to medium spicy dishes and the red sauce is definitely HOT, not medium, so I get a packet to go so I can add it myself. The spicy BBQ chicken is already made with the red sauce and I've found half spicy, half regular is the chef's kiss for my preferred spice level. I feel like vegetables are often under-appreciated, but they need a mention here...always super cold and crisp, which is refreshing when you've got to quell the heat. If you haven't, definitely give these guys a try!

Great portion size - I'm personally able to get two servings out of a regular size platter. I always get the onion and green pepper toppings, extra white sauce and 3 lines of hot sauce - it hits every time! I LOVE spicy food, so their hot sauce is just the cherry on top of their fresh rice, soft chicken and gyro meat, and crisp lettuce/tomatoes. The service is extremely fast, even if there are people in line ahead of you. I generally take my platters to go, but it's cool to dine-in at their casual seating area from time to time, especially if I'm about to do some shopping in the same plaza.

    | Deeply Disappointed -- What Happened to Baithakh?…read more Baithakh used to be one of our favorite go-to spots in North Brunswick. We've always enjoyed the food, but unfortunately, something has definitely changed since our last visit -- and not for the better. We ordered several dishes, including the Baithakh Seekh Kebab Roll, Crispy Fried Chicken Burger, Beef Paya, Beef Nihari, Peshawari Mutton Karahi, and Chicken Malai Boti. To our surprise, nearly everything was a letdown. The Beef Paya and Peshawari Mutton Karahi were both swimming in oil and severely lacked flavor, which was shocking considering how good they used to be. The Fried Chicken Burger had decent seasoning, but the chicken itself was tough and rubbery -- almost inedible. The Chicken Malai Boti was okay, but even that wasn't as tender or flavorful as we've had here before. Maybe they've changed chefs or recipes, but the quality just isn't the same anymore. Baithakh had never failed us before, but this visit was a major disappointment. Sadly, we're giving it a 2 out of 5 stars. We hope they find their way back to the standard that once made them great.
