On the culinary front, it largely succeeds. The food is flavorful, the portions are generous, and the atmosphere strongly reflects Pakistani cultural identity. The restaurant's service, however, has some catching up to do. Located in Franklin Park, New Jersey, Burns Road was founded in 2021 by three friends who shared a longing for the Pakistani flavors of their youth. Co-founder Mr. Fasih says the restaurant drew direct inspiration from Karachi's famous Burns Road, a bustling destination known for its traditional street food. Unable to find those distinctive flavors locally, the founders decided to recreate them in New Jersey--and broaden the experience along the way. That broader vision is evident on the menu. While Pakistani cuisine is at its heart, the restaurant also incorporates Iranian, Yemeni, and other South Asian and Middle Eastern influences. Yemeni mandi, for instance, appears alongside Pakistani classics. Portions are particularly generous and generally larger than those found at many Pakistani restaurants. During our visit, the dishes we sampled were flavorful and satisfying. However, we did not try several of the restaurant's signature offerings, including nihari, biryani, paya, korma, and bun kebab. Our review should therefore be viewed as an assessment of our dining experience, not a judgment of the entire menu. The generous portions can make Burns Road a good choice for families and larger groups, although prices are on the higher side. A Shinwari goat karahi, for example, is priced at $49.99, with naan costing an additional $2.29 each. While the portions help justify the cost, the final bill can still add up quickly. Our group of 20 had mixed impressions. Some guests felt the chicken and goat gravies tasted remarkably similar, suggesting that greater differentiation between the dishes would be welcome. The club sandwich was also smaller than expected. On the positive side, the mint margarita and mango lassi were well received. The restaurant's spacious dining hall is a strength. High ceilings, colorful Pakistani-themed décor, and a warm, family-friendly atmosphere create an inviting setting. The walls feature portraits of iconic Pakistani figures, including Muhammad Ali Jinnah, Allama Iqbal, Imran Khan, Dr. Abdul Qadeer Khan, Faiz Ahmed Faiz, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, and Abdul Sattar Edhi. We also experienced several basic table-service shortcomings. Utensils were missing from the table and required repeated requests; eventually, we retrieved them ourselves from the buffet area. For our large group of more than 20 people, dinner plates were stacked in three piles, making them difficult to access. Soda was served in cans, and we had to collect disposable glasses from the buffet area. Water was available in bottles for an additional charge. None of these issues is serious on its own, but together they affected the overall dining experience. They suggest that Burns Road is still developing its approach to full-service dining, particularly when handling larger groups. Burns Road is an ambitious and promising addition to New Jersey's Pakistani dining scene. Its greatest strengths are its flavorful food, generous portions, distinctive atmosphere, and genuine effort to capture the spirit of Karachi's famous food street. The owners have created more than one restaurant; they are attempting to recreate a cultural experience and share it with a broader audience. At present, however, the experience appears better suited to buffet dining and catering than to a sit-down meal. Upon entry, it looks a typical sit down restaurant; plenty of seating, side booths, and just enough lighting. The service was wonderful as I came in with a small group, approximately seven people including me. I would say that I would have liked it better if all of our orders were served at the simultaneously rather than have it served once the dish was ready. Here's what I ordered: -Mysore Masala Dosa -A much larger size than what I usually have. This savory crepe was folded in a triangular crepe-like shape rather than the traditional omelette kind. The filling was cooked well and once I dipped it in the sambar and chutneys, my taste buds were attacked by various flavors and spices. Individually, the dosa was decent and the sambar could have used a little more spice. I would have rather enjoyed more if they were also good by themselves and not in combination. -Spring Dosa -This was probably the least favorite thing I ordered. Presentation-wise, this looks they quickly sautéed some veggies and then rolled into the dosa. Alone, it was a little bland, so I had to constantly dip it into the sambar to get some taste. -Kadai Panner -Judging by the fact that it's called "Dosa Grill," I suspected that this dish would lean into more on the underwhelming side. Not sure how they made the gravy, but to me it felt more tomato forward than what was described on the menu. -Paneer Mysore Dosa -This was probably one of the best dosas I had. The paneer absorbed the masala so well that I could taste it from every bite I had. This was the only dish where I could say that the dosa itself tasted fantastic and I did not have to combine it with the sambar, which I a totally different experience itself. -Onion Chilli Utthapam -This is something I am very well familiar with growing up, so I wanted to see how they do. Knowing the base ingredients are similar to how one would make dosas, I figured it should hold up on the same bar. Much like the spring dosa, the experience with utthapam was better if it was eaten along side the sambar. By itself, all I tasted was onions and chilli and much else. I would have liked a little more spice in my opinion. Overall, I had a good time at Dosa Grill. If I had to pick one note, it would probably be not to hold back on the spices.

Without hesitation, they pointed us to Shalimar, saying it was the best option in the area despite there being several Desi restaurants nearby. After a 10 min drive we arrived with fairly low expectations. The surrounding area felt a bit worn and unremarkable--but the moment we stepped inside, that impression completely changed. The restaurant was clean, modern, and felt recently renovated. Since we still had a long drive ahead, I asked for their specialty dishes. The initial interaction with the staff felt a bit rushed, as if they had somewhere else to be on a Friday night--but we managed to place our order. And then the food arrived. The sizzler was outstanding--perfectly seasoned, incredibly flavorful, and with a texture that really stood out. The chicken was juicy and tender, paired beautifully with buttery naan. The portion was massive--easily enough for four people, and even with our best effort, we still had leftovers. Asked for extra sauce to go but that came in as a no show. We also tried the Chapli kebab, which was equally impressive. Crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside, and packed with flavor. The combination of red onions and green chili on the side elevated the dish even further. Service was a bit mixed. The chinese vegetable fried rice- I get no east asian flare with this dish and their choice in vegetables is more from a frozen bag than fresh.
