Renting an apartment in NYC is a special kind of torture. Brokers don't show up for showings, they refuse to do anything helpful whatsoever, and then you have to shell out thousands of dollars for the privilege. Working with Hakeem was by far the best experience I've ever had. He was so helpful. He scheduled times that worked with our schedule; he came to meet my partner and I in two different places to get the lease signed on a short timeline when we were going out of town the next day. After we signed the lease, he let us into the apartment and helped us take every single measurement we wanted. He met my partner at his apartment to drop the keys off. He even texted us a few weeks after we moved in to make sure everything was ok and see if he could do anything to help. When Hakeem brought me the lease, he told me that he was proud of me for being a business owner and told me the story of how he went off on his own. He told me his philosophy was to treat people like human beings, not try to mislead them, and always go the extra mile - even though the market didn't demand it, it was within his value system. The broker system is fucked up but if I, as a tenant, have to shell out a ton of money to get an apartment, I am relieved it at least goes to someone like Hakeem. Although he was working for the owner, I never felt like he also didn't want the best option for me. He let me know right away when my first choice was rented so I got my paperwork in quickly on my second choice and had my approval the next day. He also helped negotiate the pro-rated time on the first month. This was all taking place during the COVID-19 pandemic and he was incredibly flexible and accommodating. Hakeem wasted my husband's and I time and delayed us from moving in on on March 1st as we planned. It took us 2 weeks to view the apartment we loved from Hakeem. That delay already raised red flags for me as I was searching for other places while my husband was waiting patiently thinking it wasn't a big deal. When we finally saw the place, it was with another interested viewer who wanted the place as well. I found that to be very rude because Hakeem could've a told us beforehand another perspective viewing at the same time as us since we had to keep rescheduling the time (due to Hakeem's busy schedule) to see this apartment - (which included me having to take a day off from work). Even though I was slightly upset, I pushed my anger aside because the apartment was beautiful! It was exactly what we were looking for and more! I called Hakeem the same day to say my husband and I wanted the place and was going to gather all our paperwork. We had all of our paperwork ready and my husband called him to ask if we were in competition with anyone else with this apartment. Hakeem said no and both were scheduled to met on Saturday with the paperwork. However, that task never happened because on Saturday my husband called him and was informed that someone else who applied for the apartment might get the place (even though two days ago he said no one had the apartment). I was crushed. Hakeem wasted 3 weeks of our time. My husband called him again (since Hakeem didn't call him back to see if the landlord was going to select this person or not) and I took the phone from my husband to ask Hakeem if he had any other apartments since my husband and I waited so long to see this place. He said he didn't have nothing in our price range and it dead phone space after. I was holding back tears and anger. No Sorry or I'll help you find something when another place is available. Hakeem just wasted our time and didn't care. The only positive thing I can say about Hakeem is that he prevented my husband and I from paying the application fee for an apartment that someone else got. That is worth 1 star only! read more
