Sugi was my first sushi chef and still one of my favorites. The menu is a bit more traditional than many of the restaurants in Seattle but not so stuffy they won't serve masago wasabi. I never realized how good the place was until I moved and experienced sushi fail somewhere else. The fish here is always fresh, the cuts are just right, the rice is perfect every time, nothing ever falls apart on my chopstick, and the rolls are always well formed. read more

Let me say it was a lie the fish was not as fresh as it should have been and the rolls where not tight as it should be because it was falling apart before it could get to my mouth. You had to spend Over 25 just to use ur card. The service was horrible it took them 2 mins to set us and 15 to 20 20 to take our order bring water anything. Enjoyed sensational noodle soup with beef. Had sushi for 3, plus soup for under $60. Really great place to eat. There is a woman in the kitchen who is cranking out covers at a speed that most 20 year-olds can't keep up with and she cooks using more traditional style. The soup stock is made from dashi, shitake mushroom and fresh ingredients. The flavors were wonderful. Looking forward to trying new things on the menu next. read more

I very much enjoyed it. I had just come back from Japan and it was nice to be in a place that reminded me of my trip. The food is authentic home-style Japanese food. I had the bento, which was quite good and a great value. For those paying cash the restaurant will give you a free serving of ice cream, you can pick from matcha, ginger, black sesame and red bean. This place was alright. The teriyaki was good (but not the best) and the tempura was mediocre. The smoked salmon sushi was tough to eat--much tougher than it should've been. The miso soup and salad before the meal were great. I did not understand why the teriyaki came with a rather American-style salad. Was too expensive for what we got. Hakata is the place to go in Kitsap county if you are craving sushi. Sugi makes great sushi and is a very nice man. I haven't tried much else on the menu. I have had the beef sashimi which has a lot of onions and garlic in a pretty tasty sauce. The baked mussels are really good, but my favorite appetizer is the fried geoduck, but they very rarely get the geoduck. If they have it- out of the many times I have been there, they've only had Geoduck once- I would recommend giving it a try! My absolute favorite is the Spicy Tuna, Sugi does this one perfectly! read more

Oh holy moly. Rarely do I get on my Vigilante Horse of Supreme Justice when it comes to bad dining experiences (because I get it, right? Sometimes a place is just having a bad night). But when it comes to Hakata, I'm willing to ride ol' Little Blackie into the ground. It's for the fish, really. The great injustice done to the fish. I've eaten a lot of sushi in this great nation (Murca, yeah!). I've eaten at places where they fill their rolls so full of cream cheese your arteries harden just looking at them. I've eaten in places so authentic you want to weep from culture shock. I've even, in my desperation after my dear aunty died, eaten grocery store sushi (true story). And that's what we're talking about here. We're talking about grocery store style sushi at ridiculous prices, served in a dingy and depressing strip mall by people who are so uninterested in your existence that bringing you a spoon or a napkin is too far beneath them to even consider. I love ordering the chef's choice. It's great because you try new things, and the chef has an incentive to impress you. It's saying "I trust you to show me a good time, cook-sama." I've never had sushi with rice like that. Sticky, yes, good. Pasty? No. Bad. Very bad. I've never had sushi with fish cut so thickly. We're talking porkchop-sized thickness, people. Porkchops. It felt--like everything else had felt--like I was being served the cheapest possible thing available in order to save a buck. My thin roll was imitation crab (no, not a California Roll--it wasn't even that nice). Who does that?! I've never seen Tamago that gray before. Or wasabi that bile-brown. I've never tasted a specialty roll (ninja) that tasted more like dirty dish water before. My plate, with nori crusted to one little leg, was laden with cold-to-the-touch pieces of sadness. Really, it gives me the shivers just thinking about it. I should have known. I really should have. I should have known as I picked up the food-splattered laminated half sheet of paper which featured the sushi menu. I should have known when the waitress was literally already walking away halfway through our order. I should have known. I could only think "I deserve this" as I held back a suspiciously chunky feeling belch and dished out $67 dollars for the sorrow I'd just partially consumed. Never before have I "noped" so hard. As I was walking out the door I looked at what other people were eating. Globs of spicy mayo, pools of eel sauce, huge chunks of sticky-rice shrapnel, suspiciously colored wasabi... I just wanted to cry. I wanted to take all these people to restaurants where the flavor of this fish--and not the condiments--mattered. I honestly feel, after having had that dining experience, like someone was trying to pull a fast one. I felt like someone was trying very hard to rip me off. It broke my heart. read more

Best sushi Ever!!!! Crispy chicken terrific as are the baked green muscles. Try the Sugi roll. We have been going there for years and love to sit at the sushi bar. Our children are grown now and since Hakata opened, they have all insisted on Hakata for their birthday dinners. We have NEVER found a sushi restaurant that was better. I've read a few of the reviews for this place and a lot of them mention the teriyaki. I'll be the first one to agree that the teriyaki isn't as good as other places in the area, but the teriyaki is not what Hakata is known and loved for. If you're a sushi lover then you MUST try Hakata. The chef, Sugi, is a professional sushi chef and has been for decades. The sushi menu isn't huge but the rolls they have is to die for. My favorites are the Ichiro roll which contains smoke salmon rather than raw fish, and the Spicy Tuna #2 which is the best spicy tuna I've ever had. These rolls are a "melt in your mouth" kind of good. read more

NOTE:This is coming from someone who has Japanese relatives AND has had actual Japanese food from several places in different states. Completely hated it now. i've gone there 3 other times in 2 years. I've had bad stomach ache 2 times. there's 20-30 minute waits. WAY over priced. It has a special rule that states that you must order a minimum of $25.00 to use a debit/card or pay in cash. They have gotten my order wrong so many times that they only succeeded once. I just went there on 2/3/2015. Horrible. They not only messed up my order again (ordered take out on the phone) but packed the food completely wrong. I mean any Japanese Restaurant knows how to pack food, Especially Ramen. so for those people who don't know: when packing any type of ramen, you use more than one container for many reasons; main reason being is that the noodles and anything other than the broth will get too thick and soggy. sometimes not even worth eating. Most place just seperate the broth and anything non broth. what happened in detail: I ordered 2 pork ramen bowls and California roll sushi on the phone, they said it was like $17 (rounded it up to next dollar) and i need to pay in cash or order more. I told her i order 2 pork bowls and she said yes that with 2. i didn't have cash so i decided to just go to the bank and withdraw some before getting there. (takes me like 20-25 to get there and 15 for the bank) I get there, its packed and all the waiters are running around all over the place. I walk to the cashier area (which i do wish they would change because it is in the way back literately right next to a table. I tell them im here for pick up, i see the owner so i smile. He just gives me a grim scowl. i see the waitress pull from the side a 2 container that had been sitting on the counter (since i walked in) One pork ramen and california roll. I was so pissed off by it that i didn't even bother complaining and just left. ONLY reason people give this place good reviews because it has no competition at all. The other Japanese restaurant is a steak house then a sushi and noodle place. If this place had people who can cook Japanese food other than sushi, it would have closed down a long time ago. I'm sorry to say this but i suggest people not to go there. I gave it another shot, it failed so badly it wasn't funny. read more

I hadnt been to Hakata in probably 3-4 years, and had the craving for sushi, so thought we would give it a try. Wish I would of tried another place. I wasnt impressed. The sushi bar was full at 700pm, so we settled for a table, it took 15 minutes for someone to come greet and take our order. We ordered the tuna spicy roll, spider roll and the Ichiro roll, all were tasty but small in quanitity. Food was decent but service was not great. I had to wait to get our waitress attention to ask for shoyu and wasabi, had to actually ask another waitress. Not impressed. Will try another place. oh and after I read all the literature about how they would not split checks, had a bad taste in my mouth. read more

Given all the 4 and 5 star ratings, I expected better. The rolls and nigiri did use fresh fish, but both the rolls and nigiri kept falling apart. They were either too loose or too wet or something, but I've never encountered this before--with the exception of my own hand at making sushi 20 years ago. Nope. Food: I love sushi. I search for sushi restaurants everywhere I go. I just pity the folks living in Silverdale and thinking this is good sushi. We ordered the chef's choice plus a "Ninja". I would be willing to bet that the chef's choice platters were put together the day before and refrigerated. All the rolls were light on fish and heavy on imitation wasabi, spicy mayo, and eel sauce. Possibly, this was a positive point. The fish was not unsafe but neither was it fresh. The tea smelled and tasted like old boiled eggs. Did they make tea eggs and then serve the tea? I don't understand. Ambiance: The restaurant is in a strip mall and that's all right. Except that the carpet should have been tossed a year ago - (the smells from restaurant carpet can ruin ambiance), the windows could be washed once in a while, and the array of spare furniture could be stored somewhere other than in the main dining section in front of the windows. Service: Not great. Not horrid. Price: I don't mind splitting a hundred bucks or more for three on sushi. What I do mind is spending any amount of money (and especially time), on poor quality restaurant food of any kind. Cheesus! If I could give this place zero stars I would. From the moment we walked in we were not paid attention to. When we got seated we ordered our drinks and the waitress brought my fiancés drink and not mine then forgot about mine. We got no refills on our drinks the entire time we were there. The sushi me u has about 8 different rolls, so NO variety. The rolls we got were very small and not very good for the price. Once we were done eating, They brought our appetizer. Every time I tried to get the waitress's attention she was super rude and rushing around. I would never recommend this place I honestly don't know why anyone would go here read more

The sushi was nice and the service was okay, however the noodle dishes and tempura were bland and the chicken teriyaki was mostly gristle. Also, the reason for writing this review, this restaurant charges you twice for your bill if you pay with credit. I was charged over $100 for a $50 bill, called them up and was told that it was policy to charge twice and then refund in a few days. This was not mentioned before I paid or I would have paid cash to save the trouble with my bank. All in all a subpar experience with hakata restaurant in silverdale. read more

We really wanted to like this place. First off, Hakata has a following! 5 p.m. when they open and the restaurant filled up. Nice to get complimentary tea. Place is outdated for sure! Needs new carpeting and tables, chairs. Dim lighting helps hide the old feel. We ordered several dishes. The bento box at $20 for dinner over priced for sure! The tempura was terribly soggy and greasy and the dipping sauce tasteless. On the upside the tuna roll was very fresh but honestly, the sushi selection is very small and so are the rolls! The wait staff not very friendly. The straws are not wrapped in paper which is a big turn off and utensils placed on the table without regard for cleanliness. Everything was over priced and my hubby walked out still hungry so this is definitely a restaurant we won't re visit. On a final note, it would be nice to see the sushi maker wear a bandana or hair net, as well as the other workers handling the food. read more

I ate at Hakata from 2005-2006 when I was stationed in WA. The experience was a 10+ on a scale of 10! I went there so much and brought so many people there they named a roll after me! This is a very good Japanese restaurant, amazing for Kitsap County, but it would stand out as very good regardless of location. Highlights include a different lunch bento everyday and the menu has a great variety and everything is executed well. The sushi is always fresh with well prepared sushi rice and they will always tell you what the freshest choices are if you ask. A fun and delicious off menu sushi roll is the spicy tuna #3, they use habanero peppers in it which gives it a nice kick. Also, when they have it as an appetizer the tuna tataki is superior. read more

The food is not top notch sushi but it is great. I have eaten great sushi from Japan to New York and enjoyed the variety of real fresh sushi. Like many dishes in the area it is typical merger of Japanese/American style sushi. There are more tradition and more sushi like places in Western Washington, but if you just want a quick sushi with a good home feeling, this is a great place. read more

Just had lunch here today. The bento box of the day ($8.95) contained a potato croquette, chicken teriyaki, salad, rice, udon, and 4 pieces of very nicely done tempura veggies. The food was all fairly tasty, with the exception of the chicken teriyaki , which had that sort of gamey taste that comes with being reheated one too many times. Service was basic, tending towards nonexistent. I was greeted politely immediately upon entering the restaurant and my order was taken promptly, but then once my food arrived (after about a 10 minute wait), I was not checked on again until I had finished my meal. Would have liked to see some sushi in the bento, as I'd have liked to give it a try here. If I'm in the area again at lunch I may stop in again to see what they have on offer. One star removed for the inattentive service, and one star removed for the uncool credit card policy that others have mentioned as well ($15 min charge at lunch and $25 min at dinner). read more

They have a really small menu! All Anyone ever tells me about this location is how wonderful it is. However I couldn't find the wonderful! The only truly interesting thing was that my sushi came on a wooden boat. Then I remembered that Wood is porous, and I started to worry about bacteria. As far as I'm aware this is the only sushi place nearby that serves uni. While we were eating I noticed that the restaurant begin to clear out. We had only ordered a few things, so that we could sample some stuff, because we had never been there before. When we went to place our actual order; so that we could try more items on the menu we were told that wasn't possible! They said that the restaurant was closed and handed us the check. When we left, we took a look at the sign, and realized that we were walking out only five minutes after they said they closed for lunch. Realistically we probably won't return. I don't like the idea of being kicked out of a restaurant while trying to eat my food. I have been told that sitting at the bar is a much better experience. I'll leave that to you'all though... The sushi was okay, but uninspired, it looked dull and tasted dull! The restaurant is dated and in need of upgrades! I can't remember exactly, but they had a very strange policy about using debit/credit cards! They Definitely preferred cash, and when we went to pay our bill they asked us if we had cash! My family and I have been eating here ever since they first opened, and it's fantastic. The sushi to the tempura ice cream is amazing, and I come back at least 2 times a month. Service is fairly quick, for I usually get my food within a half hour. read more

My wife and I ventured over to Hakata's this past Saturday night after going to a 5th Avenue show in Seattle. We got there about 7:45pm, hoping to sit at the sushi bar. As is typical, the place was packed to the hilt. There were 4 people in front of us who wanted to sit at the sushi bar as well. We waited a while and were finally seated. Our sushi chef, Suki-san, apologized for the delay, gave us some free appetizers, and a nice tall Sapporo for good measure. We LOVE this place!!! read more

This place has good food and every time I've been there (mostly for lunch) fairly fast service - I ordered sushi and the waitress told me it could be a while, but it was less than ten minutes, which isn't a long wait to me. The sushi is the best part especially the Ichiro Roll - highly recommend that! Only ordered a meal once - the broiled Mackeral - it was pretty good, although lots of bones (of course, it IS fish!). It was a lot of food. I'm taking away one star because in order to use your card during lunch you have to order $15 or more ($25 for dinner) - for people, like me, who use their debit card all the time, this is kind of inconvenient. read more

Consistency is what I like best about this restaurant. The sushi is always made with the freshest fish. Order the sushi combo and you will get a variety of whatever is the freshest that day. Most dinners come with miso soup which is delicious because it's not too salty, and kobachi which has just the right amount of vinegar. The tossed salad has a really unique dressing that has a hint of sesame- very good. Besides sushi, there's a wide range of combination dinners. Tempura is always a winner. But the best dinner is the Hakata Bento which has chicken teriyaki, california roll, sashimi, and tempura. It's a little bit of everything.
