This is a barber academy. Not your typical haircut experience. A student trainee will start you off for level 1, followed by a more experienced barber. The staff is super friendly and super thorough. I was here for 90 minutes for what I consider a pretty simple cut, but they start with a wash and left me feeling pretty good. Hair Science is a school as well as a barber shop, so the time spent on a cut and the finished result can vary a bit. That said, all of the students and staff take the job very seriously and care deeply that you are happy when you leave. On one occasion I received a cut from a student I was not 100% thrilled with but I let them know and the owner Shawn was able to get me straight back in and got it where I wanted in about 10 minutes. Don't be afraid to say what you like or don't like (while being courteous) and you'll be an important part of someone starting their career as a hair stylist. I've been here multiple times over the past couple years. I'd always had a good experience with students cutting my care. Today I came in and my appointment was with the owner. I was there 10 min early and he was finishing up with other clients. He finished and I was assured he would be right with me. I waited as he lackadaisically entered things in the computer and walked about. After 20 min and noting his station was still not cleaned I walked out. He followed and apologized, however, when I explained my time is valuable he replied, "So is mine". Despite having previously good experiences I will not be returning. read more

The owner is an awful person. He shouldn't be allowed to cut anyone's hair. I asked for an undercut, expressed how I have never done one before, talked about the importance of my identity with my hair, came in for a consultation WITH pictures and he ended up butchering it soooooo bad. Like I should have taken him to civil court bad. He specifically said he would be doing it since he is the owner and has the most experience. During the cut I t old him several times that I felt like he was cutting too much. He kept waving me off, saying he wasnt. As he handed me the mirror to look at the finished product, he offered for me not to pay for this visit. Gee, you think? I left before I could cry in a room full of grown men who were probably seeing what I was seeing. The embarrassment that followed was so intense I practically ran out of there and had to pull over my car because I was hyperventilating and crying so hard. I was also bleeding because he cut my scalp 3 times and they were all actively bleeding or scabbed over. I called him shortly after my break down in my car and he then offered to pay for some type of cover up or extension once it grew in more. I felt like he may have cared. Since I have never done any extensions or the like, I said I would be willing to do the research to see what options made sense. During that first phone call he made excuses about the lighting in his shop, the shape of my head and the stencil of what he drew on my head!!! He also said he normally does free hand. At any point he had the choice to stop cutting and admit he couldn't do it but he chose to proceed and comfort me that he had it. He also apparently has no clue about pricing for wigs or keratin bonded hair because I let him know only a few weeks later that certain services would be like $200-$300 to get something worth trying to cover it up. That wasn't even the full amount quoted to me from other salons to get anything worthwhile. I stupidly was willing to help pay for his horrible mistake so i could get something halfway decent. I could barely leave my hair down and when it was up it looked incredibly bald underneath. He said he wasn't paying for anything that costed that much and that I took too long to get back to him. The most he was willing to offer was $100 and only if he could use a hand written check and do it as a tax writeoff. He is an asshole. Careless, untrained, unprofessional asshole. Period. With someone who had as long of dreads as he had, he should know that hair journeys take a long time and he royally messed up and should fix it. This is what a barber shop is all about! From the customer service over the phone with the owner squeezing my 4 year old son in at the last minute. To the appearance of the shop, to the hair cut that was absolutely phenomenal. He was quick, patient with my son, gentle, made him laugh, and delivered nothing but a great experience. Very professional from the moment you walk in to attempt at setting you up for recurring appointments as you leave. Definitely had the barbershop feel with the TVs and the conversation. I came in to get my beard trimmed and at first glance the lineup and the overall shape was good. But the next day when I combed it out, it became apparent it should have been combed out more while I was in the chair. There were a bunch of super long hairs still. We had just moved here and went to about 8 different places for my 7yr old and was never satisfied especially since I'm super picky. Called Hair Science expressed my concern didn't want to pay for another butcher job and the owner was very understanding and accommodating. My son walked out with a great cut and it's been our place ever since. I love the vibe, all the students are great I don't think you can go wrong with anyone who does your cut. I think what I like most is the hospitality they show my son the proper way you greet people, and it's not the type of shop that talks shop if ya know what I mean everyone is very professional. I've been there 4 times to date. 2/4 times a student cut my hair with excellent results (better than the boss) and he interpreted what i wanted perfectly. The "boss" (who I found to be a very likable fellow) cut it twice less satisfactorily but adequately; but he didn't seem to know how to trim my beard and left a small gouge under the chin. Overall, the place seems to have more skill at barbering than my previous place but it is $30/visit compared to the previous $18 ($20 with tip) that I used to pay, possibly because they insist on washing your hair each time. That's almost caused me to stop going and is too much to add a tip as well. So far I guess it's been worth the $30, (which I suppose is high praise by itself) since I keep going back (I have my doubts that my previous place could to the clipper based cut they've been doing) but worth $30 only just barely. If the price was any higher I would not return. Positives: Very strong successful attempt at professionalism, general high skill level, even the student. Nice remodel and very pleasant atmosphere. Negative: Expensive. I don't like them asking for a rating on the service and cut at the end of the appointment. You feel put on the spot to say something good and often you need to evaluate the cut at home afterward to really know how good it was. read more

My first experience was not the greatest and neither was my second. Customer service was fine, everybody is generally friendly. The problem was the quality of the haircut I received. $30 for a student to cut your hair seems high, but despite that i decided to give it a try. My hairstyle is a side part pretty basic but, when I was done. One side of my head looked like a staircase with three steps. I didn't notice until i got home and washed my hair due to the product. Not a big deal, just need to blend one side of my head to match the other. So I went back the next day and asked to blend it down a bit and they accommodated me within an hour and half, no problem. The problem was after the cut my head looks like it is on a tilt. They lined up both sides of my head at an angle. It is not noticeable at first glance but its one of those things that when you notice you can't un-notice it. (it's like 10 degrees off of 90) Despite all of the positive reviews on here that led me to believe it would be the barbershop I was looking for. I am sorry to say that I will not be returning for another hair cut. read more

The first time I went I was quite pleased, a very nice student cut my hair, loved it. Second time I got another man, nice cut, but very rude. Went again hoping it was a fluke, it happened again. There are 2 things I always look for in a barber shop 1. Quality of cut 2. Vibe This place is dope on both levels. 2 things you need to know about this place is it's a school and it's by appointment luckily the owner graciously accepted my walk in. Iet me be clear even though they are students in no way affected the quality and care of my cut. The owner/teacher that was there immediately introduced himself and explained how the shop worked. I was impressed how his students were super professional, skilled, and caring. His teaching definitely reflected in how his students treated their craft. Each student even went of there way to introduce themselves to me. They wash you're hair before you get cut and they use straight razors to clean up all the lines. Even when I was totally satisfied with my cut the teacher/owner inspected the work and makes any changes and touch ups which made my great haircut even better. The quality and care was TOP notch. Working in business myself I understand that quality and customer service are what keeps customers coming back. Whenever I visit anchorage I will be stopping here for the fresh cut! Hands down, one of, if not THE best barbershop I've ever been to. I've been coming in weekly for over two months now, and have not had a single complaint. Honestly, I've only been here a few times. My last time was in March I believe. I really enjoyed their work, they may take a little longer than most places but that's because they're students. They take your coat for you, wash and shampoo your hair, and give you a good clean haircut. That's not the reason I'm giving 2 stars though. The reason for that is they can't take "no" for an answer. "Would you like a beard trim? I can clean it up for you" "no thanks, but thanks for offering" "come on man, it's $5 and it'll make you look great" "no, thanks" "you're really gonna want it" like, seriously. And then when the haircut is done, this happens every time. I never know what my schedule is gonna be like, so I don't make appointments until like a few days or a week before I know I'm ready. Again, they kept pressing me to make an appointment that day. I mean, I get it, it's business. You want to make sure you have a customer locked down. But learn that it's about the customer's needs, not yours. If I don't want to make an appointment right away, you should be fine with that, not keep bringing it up 6 times before I leave. This last time I went I finally caved and made the appointment for a month out. They said they would call me 2 days before the appointment, but April came and went and i never received the call. It was probably for the best because, as a not-so-rich college student, I don't enjoy being looked at as "let's see how much money we can get from him" and I'd like to see more of "how can we make him feel more happy with us so he'll want to be a lifetime customer." If he said "hey, that's no problem, just call us a week or two ahead of time and we'll try to fit you in" the first time, I would still be going there. One of the best haircuts in the State. Sometimes tricky to make an appointment, since everyone is a student and has another "day job." However - don't expect the 15 minute cut you receive in so many other places. Everyone is very particular and accurate. I see coming here as my "Man-Spa-Visit".
