I've been growing my hair out and highlighting the roots as they grow. I always get my best friend who is a hair stylist to do it but she wasn't available this time to do as soon as I wanted it done so I decided on The Hair Lodge. I've only been one other time for a hair trim and it went very well so I was confident that this was a good place to go. The young girl who did my roots was very pleasant and acted very competent. Nothing wrong with her at all. It was solely her execution. Instead of a nicely blended highlight all over, I now have chunky stripes of bleached hair through my natural blond. It doesn't look natural at all. When she was blow drying my hair it was all poofy so I couldn't immediately tell how it looked, all I saw was more blond and I was happy with what I could see. Two days later I shampooed my hair and straightened it when it dried and that's when I noticed the HARSH lines and ridges the bleach had made on my roots. And some roots she didn't even highlight at all! So now I have some roots still there, others with ridges of bleached parts that don't even reach my scalp, and thick chunky stripe-like highlights on top. I won't be returning to have them fix it either because if she could blow dry my hair and SEE the kind of work she had done and still let me pay, tip her, and walk out, then I do not trust her to know how to fix it. Needless to say I won't be back and I should just stick to getting my hair done by my friend.

But that's not her fault. I live in California, but was visiting family in Texas. I've been researching getting a DevaCut for a few years now... But it's kinda a scary thing to do when you've grown up for years as a Black woman not having "proper" education about "your" kind of hair. Being only given Damaging options of Relaxers and Weave and Braids and Wigs (which I refuse) OR Heat Damaging options of Blow Outs, Flat Irons, Press and Curls. So while in town, I just researched DevaCut on Yelp and low and behold Brittany came up with these great reviews. I called on Wed and she gave me an appointment for Friday! Woo hoo! My instructions were to come dry & detangled. I arrived early because I was nervous and excited and didn't want to be late. Brittany put me in rotation as she was finishing another client (who was also getting a DevaCut for the first time). I told her my struggles & to just work her magic (I figured if I was going to go for it, why interfere with her judgement of what needed to be trimmed...). I don't think she ever used a brush or comb - & she educated me on this . The products smell so good, don't leave gooky residue & I'm sold. She also recommended a great book that has great tips for those transitioning into healthy hair. I bought the products she had in stock & I'll buy the rest on Amazon. I'm excited about this journey. If you're in the Tomball/ Woodlands area of Texas, Brittany is the DevaCut person to trust. I'll be coming to see her when I'm in town.

Not…read moretoo long ago I needed a cut, and was in the Conroe area so I checked Yelp to find a salon that had good reviews and reasonable prices (Although, my expectations were still pretty low.) However, I soon found that with Clip Cuts - you can believe the positive reviews! They are as good as their reviews say they are!! I'm going to start my review addressing the ambiance of the salon! It is bleak! We are talking plan-jane atmosphere -- they don't even have magazines to flip thru (to read OR to select possible hair cuts or styles from). They do have a TV, but it is hung at a terrible location for watching from the few waiting area seats that are located in the lobby area. It is obvious that the salon does not draws customers in for any other reason except styling hair!! That said, the waiting area was clean and the furniture was in decent enough shape, so the minimalist lobby does serve its purpose. Now on to the actual 'hair cut' review -- at the time of my visit other reviewers had mentioned two stylists by name - Angela and Phala (pronounced Paula). Both were recommended as being good stylists. Since I didn't have an appointment, and was a new-be customer with limited time, I just signed in and took my chances with which stylist I'd get - hoping I'd get a good cut, but knowing that I could end up getting a less than skilled stylist that hadn't been mentioned in a review. As luck would have it, I got Angela - she asked what I wanted done, we talked for a few minutes - I explained the look I was going for, and before long she went to work cutting my hair. She was fast and the cut was exactly as I had described! I was blown away to have finally found a stylist in Texas that could cut hair well!!! And at a very reasonable cost - $11!!! (I did not have a shampoo or have it styled.) BTW Phala was there that day too - she had a request waiting when I arrived - which means happy, returning customer. So, would I go back? Positively I would -- and WILL!!
