So we walked from the hotel expecting to do a ToGo order. We were immediately greeted by a very cheerful and polite gentleman who welcomed us in, accompanied by the warm clay bread oven that sits by the front door. We decided to stay. The ambiance was amazing - it was like stepping into another world. Finally the food. Mind you I was on the hunt for a £5-£6 kebab that I could take to the hotel for a late night "snack". Not an £11 kebab. But, we weren't heading back we were sitting in. So we ordered the minced lamb kebab with hummus and it was worth EVERY bit! Delicious! I highly recommend Faanoos!

I seem to have developed an unhealthy obsession with Persian food!…read more We decided to try this place after reading about it in Time Out, and it didn't disappoint. If you're standing in front of Faanoos then you have a choice of two other Persian restaurants within walking distance: There's Chella down the road (near the GBK end of Chiswick), which has a more Western atmosphere, and service, and excellent food. Then there's Rice, which is literally across the road from Faanoos. Even though the service is very good at Rice, I prefer the food at Chela and Faanoos. Things that are most popular at Persian restaurants are the Makhsoos, and the Chicken grill. All starters are worth a try. If you're not a grill fan then there are other dishes you can choose from. If you're walking past between 12-6pm then you can stop and have their Chicken or Lamb sandwich for £3.80, wrapped in their freshly made bread. And no, I don't work for them!! If the weather's good then I usually sit outside and have a Persian tea, or a Persian ice cream while I'm waiting for my sandwich! Enjoy!

The first night we went, it was after 10PM and they were all out of the doner kebab (I took this as a good sign). My husband ended up with the lamb kebab wrap, and I got the lamb beyti kebab wrap (minced lamb with garlic and parsley). We also got a side of falafel and took it back to our flat. Is it crazy to say this was one of our best meals in London? The kebab wraps were delicious, a spicy chile sauce providing a good heat to the meal. The falafel was out of this world good - best I've ever had. We went twice more: my husband loved the doner, though I personally found it too salty. I also had the yogurtlu beyti, which was lamb drenched in a yogurt sauce. It was really good, though perhaps a little too heavy on the yogurt. We never ate in - it seems like the best deal is to just get takeout. Kebabs are only about £5-7, and you get plenty for your money. We watched them cook the kebabs on the grill, and the smell was heavenly. They even throw the wraps and flatbread on top of the meat to warm and grill them a bit. There's a little bit of a language barrier making it just a little difficult to order, but it's absolutely worth it. Best Mangal has two other locations nearby, one just a block or so up the street, and another at the bottom of North End Road near the Fulham Broadway Underground. A great find, and a culinary highlight of our trip.

Back then he told me about this Persian restaurant in Ealing and I promised I would check it out eventually. Forward several years - I still haven't kept my promise - I receive the following Yelp compliment from Allen D: "Happy New Year Mr Uli. You know every time I end up in Persian Palace I wonder if you've managed to try Persian yet!" Seriously, how can I not but strap on my boots and venture out to Ealing after receiving such a note! I arrived at Persian Palace on a Sunday evening around 7pm and I was greeted by a line of about 15 people. Great...maybe I should've read the reviews forewarning me about this. But I'm in good spirits, have a book on me and am starving...so I queue up in very English fashion. The line moves quite quickly and after about 20-25 minutes waiting I am being offered a table. Once seated I whip out my Yelp App with the intention of studying the other people's reviews for food recommendations. But the nice waitress disapproves of this behaviour. When she sees me studying my phone, she says something like this: "No need to google the best dishes, that's what I am here for!" I loved her for this frankness and right away switched off my phone and waited for her input. I ended up ordering the following starter and main course with her: Starter: Kashk-E-Badenjan (sauteed aubergine, walnuts, garlic, whey and mint) with bread Main: Momtaz (one skewer of marinated chicken fillet and one skewer of mince lamb kabab served with rice, grilled tomato) Drink: Doogh (yogurt-based beverage seasoned with mint; similar to the Turkish Ayran) All of the above items were plentiful and delicious and I was happy as a puppy! And even though I was quite satiated after these two rather big portions, I still remembered a dessert when I had first read Allen's review: Paloodeh (or has he spelt it: Faloodeh). Paloodeh is a Persian sorbet threaded with rice noodles and flavoured with rose water. It's served along with a fresh slice of lemon, which you're supposed to squeeze over the sorbet. I have to say this was the highlight of my dinner. The unusual combination of sorbet and vermicelli noodles was exotic and absolutely delicious. I loved it! Some last tips: * I suggest coming here as a group - do make a reservation though! * If you live nearby, you can skip the line and order take away (online ordering is possible) Thanks, Allen D, for making me come here!
