The Hainan chicken was tasty but the serving is on the small side. It also took a long time for the food to come out which I found odd as the chicken and rice would all have been Pre-cooked. Since I can't seem to find a site for reviewing the South Yarra (Shop 1, 128-130 Little Bourke Street, Chinatown) location, I'm going to post this here and hope that someone can share this with them. Woeful. That's all I can say. And racist. As the only Caucasians in the place, and looking for a lunchtime location and tempted by the Hainan chicken, we dropped in and were quickly ushered to a back booth. Our order was taken many minutes after others who came and when finally ordered, the food came out warm and hardly seasoned. We ordered Teochew Braised Tofu, 3 Layers Tea and two Hainan Chicken w/Rice. I totally love going to ethnic enclaves like Chinatowns across the world, and dining at some of their best restaurants like a local. But I can't speak Chinese, will never learn it at my age, and rely on my servers to recommend and bring out the best of their restaurants' kitchens. That didn't happen here. And it's sad. Edible but not fantastic. Overpriced for the portion size. Half a chicken wing and a bit if breast on top of a bed of cucumbers. Have to give extra marks in the taste of the light soy. If it wasn't for that I would not be full! They need to change this menu item from hainanese chcken race to soya sauce in rice with a bit of chicken on side! I should not have let my curiosity get to me and accepted fellow reviewers before me!!! WIR?? that's a big fat NOOOOOOOOO! read more

Small restaurant nestled on the busy Kingsway in Glen Waverley. Just a few doors away from the Century City cinema entrance. We managed to get in at the right time and were immediately seated. Orders had to be ordered at the front counter and we ordered the hainan steamed chicken, roasted chicken and a couple portions of chicken rice. It took roughly 10 mins for our order to arrived and it smells really good. The roast chicken is as you expect it, golden brown crispy skin and tender succulent chicken. Only ever so slightly dry. The steamed chicken is just silky and not overly oily. The chicken rice itself was fragrant. The soup was weak but ok. The ginger sauce was too over powering but the chilli was fine. At 12:30pm, the crowd soon piled in and was hard to walk around. Noticed a plate of pan fried dumplings ordered for another table and it came out severely charred. All in all it was ok. Slightly on the expensive side. Credit card use minimum is $35. read more

This lace opened about 2 months ago. They took over half of what used to be Straits of Malacca. Evidently, the Straits couldn't afford the rent so they downsized. Given the price, this is definitely a one night stand. While the meal itself was quite tasty, the serve was unbelievable small. Never in my life have I receive a serve of chicken that was basically consisting of half a wing and two small pieces of chicken breast. If you are on a diet and have lots of money to burn, then this is the place for you. Wonder how long they will last if they don't improve their portions. read more

First time I eat here today - Sunday. They are next to Straits of Malacca - for those of you familiar with Kingsway. I can't remember what used to be here - was it the dessert shop before ? When I go there - full house but fortunately I only wait for a few minutes. Seating - they should invest in more comfortable seating - I am not keen on wooden bench. There are the other style as well but I got wooden bench - bad luck. The interior - wall is lime green colour - not sure why they choose lime green maybe they think it will help customers to relax and they will order more. Air con - overhead I saw the unit. Atmosphere - not enough room between tables - normal atmosphere for Asian restaurant - all Chinese rattling sound - I am used to that for years so no problem for me. Ordering - why they don't take order at table? Customer must get up and go to front counter to place order. Not enough staff?? I saw a few Caucasians - one of them order dumplings. I am too far to see what else they order. I ordered Hainanese Chicken with noodle - the soup is like water - not enough flavour not sure what is the flavour meant to be. The serving is too small - pay too much for that. The serving size must improve if they want to succeed and the dishes must be cheaper. If you go there you will understand - quick look at menu. I wonder anyone go in and walk out straight away after looking menu- I don't blame them. I didn't see that one - maybe everyone too nice to do anything like that. the website is hainan-chicken.com.au but not ready yet - it has 'opening soon' - so no use to go there They put effort in producing the menu -so colourful with graphics - so they must put the same effort into the food. Although people mainly focused on the portion size for most of the reviews I find that the main problem with the restaurant was the quality of chicken served. The Hainanese chicken was not cleaned properly (there were still bits of feather sticking out of the skin), and the roasted chicken was too salty. The soup that went along with the chicken rice was also way too salty. The only thing that tasted ok was the rice. I would not recommend coming here and I won't go back again. read more
