It's not uncommon for me to go and have a lane to myself or just with one other. The competition pool is generally always get up for lane swimming, in 50m configuration, except Sunday afternoons when it's used instead for aqua splash. It's one of those times I wish I had a youngster around to justify going! If 50m isn't your thing, then the training pool is often open for lane swim in 25m configuration. But be warned, there is also family swim here and swimming lessons. The facilities are always very clean, sometimes there are more cleaning staff than patrons and the changing facilities above par. Bring your towel, shampoo, £1 and some swimming Google and you're ready to go. The hair dryers are actually really good too!

Yep living near the Park is paying off nicely at the moment - my new local council swimming pool is none other than the Aquatics Centre! It's been open to the public for the last few weeks and I have to say it's a pretty special venue - I still get tingles every time I walk in. It's £4.50 per swim session for an adult and there's an easy peasy online system to book in advance. There are 2 full size pools inside - the Competition Pool for the hardcore swimmers and the Training Pool where they separate the lengths into two 25m sections. Personally I found a 50m pool to be ridiculously long in real life (my superwoman stamina is a err work in progress) so I tend to do laps in the 25m lanes. You choose a pool and a start time online but it's pretty lax once you're in, and you can stay as long as you like. The water is a nice slightly warm temperature and it's usually a uniform 1.2m depth all the way along (though somehow they can change the depth of different sections - the mind boggles!). It's not all lanes - there are also sections of the pool roped off for 'fun' as well as swimming lessons. Also saw signs for a total wipeout stylee 'Splash Time' for kiddies at weekends that sounded like great fun if anyone wants to lend me a child?! The reason it misses a 5th star is that the changing rooms and shower facilities are just not that great. It's spacious yes and there are plenty of cubicles, hairdryers and lockers, but the layout is a little confusing (quite a wander from the lockers to the female showers), they seem to have too many staff/cleaners milling around not doing much, and the showers themselves seem temperamental and need you to wave a hand past every 3 seconds. Is this how Michael Phelps showered?! (*pauses to enjoy the mental picture*) Ahem. Yeah I expected better. So remember to bring your own towel+toiletries, a plastic bag for your wet cozzie (I haven't spotted a drying machine yet) and a £1 coin for the lockers. And please only tell your special friends - the nicest thing at the moment is that it isn't too busy on weeknights! See you there :)

The last few times i've been there with the kids the water has been cold, some or other facility has been unavailable or something along those lines. As a student, it's relatively cheap to get in but that's pretty much the only good point for me. That said, my kids thoroughly enjoy it every time they go. The people that currently run the centre on behalf of the council are undertaking a renovation program so once that is completed, i'll revise my review if warranted.

This then leads to the argument that if your guna drive to the gym to go for a run you might as well just go for a run. However, it is the whole set of facilities that make every session that little bit better. With indoor/outdoor swimming pools, a great gym, tennis courts, badminton courts, physios, steam room, sauna and spa but to name a few, the facilities are vast. I always feel that if you are going to do fitness you need to do cardio and weight training as both are necessary for good all round fitness. Then you need a reward which is when the sauna and steam rooms come in. This place isn't cheap but if you go on the website you can get a free days membership so you can see what your missing out on. Creche facilities as well so having kids is no excuse!!!

There's sun terraces with loungers, a curved pool big enough to fit five hundred swimmers in and a smaller, child friendly pool. Since being refurbished to a high standard at the end of the nineties, there's also a cute cafe selling tea and cakes, changing rooms and toilets - which should all help you brave the biting winds and try your hand at some front-crawl of breast-stroke. Naturally, this being England the Lido is shut in the Autumn and Winter and re-opens annually every Spring til mid September. There's direct buses from Churchill Square in Brighton and if its a windy day, it's well worth phoning in advance to check the pool is definitely open.

My 2 year old has swimming lessons here, £54 for 14 weeks half an hour per session then unlimited use of the other pools. The lesiure centre also boasts a gym, a sauna, a creche and a soft play area. I also recently attended a childs party here in another gym which came with a full sized bouncy castle. There is a cafe serving a selection of hot and cold food and drinks. Something for all the family. Staff are all very polite and helpful.

Two of us came here in February on a Monday morning, granted this is off season, but nothing seemed open and the town itself seemed completely asleep all morning. The marina is beautiful and has a variety of food options, but not much opens until 11am or 12pm. The boats are shining and the water looks clean as the sun beams down across it all. The bathrooms are upstairs and the disability bathrooms are locked on the first floor which seems quite disappointing in case of emergency. The bathrooms upstairs surprisingly had a good electric dyson hand dryer and was clean, although inconvenient to get to. Tip/Takeaway: Would not recommend planning on spending much time here other than passing through to get to the Undercliff Walk and making a bathroom break upstairs.
