All I can say is WOW. I came here for the first time last week, and Im now a huge fan. They have great products here. I rarely shop at the small butcher shops, so the price seems a tad pricey when compared to regular chain grocery stores that I usually frequent. However, after having tasted everything I bought, it was more than worth the money. The quality really exceeds my expectation. For about 25 bucks, I got a huge piece of rib-eye (a bit over a pound a piece), 1 pound of their home-made brats, 1 pound of the polish sausage, and 1 pound of the smoke sausage. The rib-eye was AMAZING! There is absolutely no need for us to go to any steakhouse when we can just make a great steak at home. One huge piece of rib-eye with a huge salad bowl was a perfect dinner for us. I didnt really know how to cook steak so I just pan seared it. My bf likes his steak close to well done and even that much of cooking time, the rib-eye was still super juicy and tender. Out of the three sausages, the polish sausage was the best. It wasnt that salty, full of smoky and whatever polish flavor. I just heated a link, cut it up, put them over my brown rice bowl and sprinkled some hot sauce. I know it's a weird way to eat, but Im Asian so what do you expect? lol The smoke sausage was also great .. not too salty with nice smoky flavor. Their home-made brats were also very tasty. I really like how their sausages arent overly salty and not too fatty so you can enjoy them with a bit less guilt. ;) read more

So I had all these beets that I dug from my girlfriend's parents' garden, and we were thinking, "It's Borscht time!" I wanted to make it with some really good, marrowy meat like oxtail or something, so I figured rather than go deal with counter people at Rainbow I would stop in to this neighborhood butcher shop I had driven by a thousand times, but never set foot in. Some decisions in life are mundane, and don't make that much difference in the long run as to how you live your life. Others are so pivotal that you find yourself referring to them as landmarks in time. I have now started a whole new calendar in my life. Up to now will forever be known as Before Hackenmueller's. As I sit here now I can only sadly shake my head at all the wasted meals when I settled for prepacked gray steaks or pork when I could have been cooking the best the animal kingdom has to offer. I forgot how fantastic a true butcher shop smells. All the aromas from meats and spices and sausages all mingling together in a giant cloud of potential. The man behind the counter let us wander for a few minutes as we took it all in and made some last minute decisions, and then when we told him what we wanted he bent over backwards to get it for us. As it turned out, someone had come in on Saturday and bought up all their oxtails (who the hell needs that many oxtails?!), but he offered to get some in the next day and call me when it arrived. Holy crap! We wanted Borscht that day though, so he got us this delightfully marbled slab of bone-in beef shank, and tossed in a femur to give us a better beef stock. We made some other purchases, but before we left I wandered just a tad to see their other wares. Anything you could ever want to make out of any animal, Hackenmueller's can sell it to you. Fowl, fish, or ungulate, spiced or not (they had a really appetizing stuffed pork chop that I'll be going back to try before it gets too cold to grill). The free jerky samples made me want to just have that for dinner. And I really need to reiterate that the guy who helped us was incredible. I didn't try any of their sausage, so I don't know how it compares to a place like Karmarczuk, but if they taste as good as they smell I'll be doing 100% of me meat purchasing at Hakcenmueller. read more

Not going to lie, I was a bit bummed to move to Robbinsdale a few months ago. "What? Give up my Minneapolis zip code? Why would I want to do that?" I was a fool. During a summertime run to Dairy Queen, I discovered the main street of Robbinsdale and fell in love. All of these great neighborhood places within walking distance? Without the huge Minneapolis markup? Sold. Hackenmueller Meats is one of the best places along this stretch. The bf is a HUGE meat fan, and just had to get something. A couple of polish sausages, a Killebrew root beer, and a bag of fresh sauerkraut later, we were ready for a summer time feast. Oh, and feast we did. The polish sausages were the perfect color, well spiced, and just bursting with meaty goodness. The sauerkraut was tangy and crunchy. Way better than the canned stuff, and almost as good as the kind my great grandmother made. Almost. You can't really compete with a woman whose husband's name was Bohemmal. For reals. Anyway, I am glad that this place is within walking distance from my humble abode. Huzzah! read more

Depending on what time you go to PAMP, schedule a stop here. We got deli ham and cheese, which was fabulous. I'm just as impressed with other stuff they carry besides meat. Quite a few Slap Ya Mama products, including the fabulous fish fry breading. Bridgeman's ice cream in larger containers. Great bread and buns for all the meat. Some kind of local frozen pizza. Definitely a holiday haven. I just read that they came in 2nd in the eat taste test for best brats, behind Butcher and the Boar 6:4. Memory lane German butcher is right. read more

I can not say enough good things about this wonderful meat market. I was just there 2 days ago stocking up for grilling season. The plan too fill the freezer up with good ground beef. They have a central cooler of flash frozen 1 lbs wrapped burger. I usually get all I can carry because Its wrapped and can be put right into my freezer. The meat is always lean and does not flair up and for frying for tacos it is not greasy. One dieters point is that they have ground turkey breast not just ground turkey. I would say give there thick cut bacon a shot for those bacon cheese burgers it has the best flavor. Then grab a couple pounds of fresh ground beef for using right away. The kids will dig the pepper sticks and the ones with cheese rock. I have noticed they carry allot more seasoning and spices not always found in cub so give them a look. One more thing the GARLIC SUMMER SAUSAGE.. make sure it is the garlic it is marked..... It is lean and a huge treat. If you think it is pricey it is a little bit more but you will taste and experience the difference. read more

Meat-topia! I freakin' LOVE this place. Hackenmueller has some seriously stellar meat offerings. I've had some of the best NY strip I've ever eaten from here, beautifully marbled and juicy with a wonderful beefy flavor. I'm also a huge fan of the flank steaks; they make excellent tacos. Trust me on this. And the brats! Serve these at your next BBQ if you want to impress. Johnsonville, who? And the bacon! Because, bacon. The price is exactly the same as the frozen brand name crap and you're getting a better, more flavorful product. A real no-brainer here. I highly recommend getting yourself a meat stick (or 5) to snack on on your way home because they are super good. They have a wonderful smoky flavor, not too salty, really just satisfyingly meaty and delicious. read more

After taking advantage of Yelp reviews for a long time, Hackenmueller finally prompted me to make an account. Ham. Smoked ham. Not chemically smoked, mind you, but smoked with real smoke in back of their shop. Yum! After looking with disgust at grocery store offerings the last six months or so, I stumbled across Hackenmueller's around Thanksgiving. Picked up a ham for Christmas Eve dinner. Juicy, smoky, just the right flavor. Highly recommended. I already regret spreading the word. I'll probably have to reserve one next year, rather than walking into the shop five minutes before closing on Christmas Eve. read more

Best Brats I've ever had!! Their original brats were juicy, spicy and tasty. We also got some rib eyes and they were very steak-a-licious! For about 35 dollars, we got 6 brats and 3 rib eyes. Who needs Manny's? Not this girl! :) You can also call them ahead to get pork belly before they cure it to make bacon. I have been craving some good sliced pork belly to grill and they have got it! I loved visiting Hackenmueller's when I lived in the area. The service was always friendly. The person behind the counter was focused on you as a customer. When I wanted a particular steak from the selction in the case, it was no problem. I was reminded of the butcher shop I went to as a kid the minute I saw the screen door and walked in on the old-time warehouse wooden floor to be greeted by butchers in white (complete with an apron) who treated me as though I had been a long-time customer even on my first visit. read more

I love their meats, but I cannot stand the no gloves protocol. I asked for 2 lbs ground beef and the man behind the counter took his bare hand and dug out the meat. I was appalled and sick to my stomach. I threw the ground beef away when I got home. Next visit, ordered beef jerky, again no gloves. This IS a butcher shop. The staff is both knowledgeable and friendly. Located in Robbinsdale's quaint downtown, Hackenmueller's is a cute little shop. The place is clean and filled with the delicious smell of meat. The selection of meats is quite good. Nothing exotic, but many varieties of excellent meats and sausages. This particular meat market is a local favorite, simply because well... They love what they do and they do it well. Serve meat! Although its a lil bit more pricey than a grocery store, you definitely get what you pay for here. They have such a wide assortment of meats. From beef to pork, chicken, turkey, even walleye and halibut cuts!! I love halibut and have yet to try theirs in particular, but from every other meat cut and dish I've gotten there, I'm almost positive it will be great. They even sell pot pies, turkey, chicken, and beef, frozen which are made right there in the store. They have also turned me into a new "Cajun" style seasoning/spice called "Slap ya Mama" and it is absolutely amazing. I get the hot version because I am a spicy food addict, but they do carry a mild and regular version for the wimps that cannot handle true flavor. Haha jk I still love you guys.. Also try the jalapeño cheddar brats. They are scrum-diddly-umptous. Amazing store! All around. I would absolutely love to give them 5 stars, but I am super disappointed they do not carry game meat such as venison or rabbit. But if they do I will update my review to the full 5. It is one of the only places I know of where you can get fresh lutefisk, which might not be as much of a plus for many others as it is for me, since I happen to be a true Minnesotan and really cherish my lutefisk! I am joining Yelp to show my support for Hackenmueller Meats! Their ground beef is flavorful and tastes like real meat. Their frozen chicken choices are delicious and easy to make. They have a huge selection of meats as you'd expect, but also have lots of other items including: frozen potato choices, egg rolls, Heggies pizzas, lasagnas, seafood, hamburger buns, condiments, etc. It could be your one stop shop for a delicious dinner! If you have ever considered checking out a real butcher shop but were a little unsure, I would personally recommend you start here. I was sick of low quality grocery store meat. Best Thanksgiving food yet: Hackenmueller double-smoked ham simply reheated and glazed, Hackenmueller natural turkey, no water added, brined, spatchcocked, and smoked for four hours on our pellet smoker. Ham was tender, not overly salty, ... perfect. Turkey ran juices when I separated the legs and wings from the breasts. Even 4 days later the breast meat is almost too moist and tender. Forget saving a few bucks buying pasteurized, homogenized, and flavorless food at the big grocery chains. Buy here. They are also a reliable source for pork bellies when I make bacon. They make their own bacon, too. Not as good as mine, of course but very, very good. read more

I grew up in Robbinsdale, and every time I come home I stop at Hackenmueller's if I can and buy some steaks or brats. They are a hometown memory. I wish they still butchered venison, but they are hipster now. Still good steaks and brats. Another sad state of affairs is you can't come in the back door. Hackenmueller Meats is a mandatory stop for us whenever we grill in the summer. They have really great (and pretty cheap) homemade brats and fresh ground hamburger. The hamburger is about 80% lean and makes amazing burgers. We boil their fresh brats in Grain Belt and then grill them over charcoal. It can't get any better! The other stuff they make themselves is equally great: bacon, stuffed chicken breasts, jerky, home-smoked hams, etc. The list goes on and on. If you ever want to impress the inlaws, buy a few New York strip steaks or buy a prime rib roasts. They'll get you any size prime rib (within reason) if you order in advance. We hardly go to steakhouses anymore because Hackenmueller Meats has us spoiled! We went to Pittsburgh Blue for an anniversary dinner a couple years ago. On the way out my wife looked and me and said, "That didn't impress me. It just made me wonder why they can't get meat that's as good as what Hackenmueller's gets." read more

So I made the drive up here from South Minneapolis (SoMinn? SoMi? SoMpls?) on a Saturday. Saturdays seem to be very busy here, as Saturdays are officially "Lets go buy groceries" days, which includes going to the butcher shop. I had a craving for kapusta at the time and was on a mission for kielbasa. I can hear you angry Yelpers telling me that I should go to Kramarczuks, since that is OBVIOUSLY the place to go for sausage... but I digress. So the waiting are is about the size of a kitchen, with twelve thousand different items to order (by grabbing a number ticket and listening REAL carefully for your number) -- which you can do so out of the display case or by picking up pre-wrapped packages of whatever your carnivorous heart desires. Anyway, the meat selection was fantastic and the kielbasa I found was about half the price of Kramarczuk's and tasted even better. Yes, better. I'd still go to Kramarczuk's for other sausage... but Hackenmueller is teh wins for my kielbasa. read more
