Cool retro general store off Route 66! This store is the #1 photographed place on Route 66 and is located right off the highway with plenty of free parking. Amy, the new owner, has friendly team members that mind the store which is full of merchandise and memorabilia. Restrooms are cleaned and well maintained, this Sunday there was live music in the front of the store which added to its appeal. There's coffee, water, sodas and snacks for purchase as well as Route 66 apparel. Stop in, you will not be disappointed! read more

Gift and Specialty Shop [Hackberry AZ] Located on the Historic Route 66 in a tiny village in central Mohave County we pulled over to check out the vintage displays including cars, nostalgic gas pumps, tin can billboards... I was amused to see an antique Coke vending machine. I had to google it to get a full description but it was a Vendo 63 Coke Machine. "The Vendo 63 offers 7 selections, each adjustable for bottle sizes 7-12 oz, holding 63 bottles total and is coin operated." Very cool ツ The store has a rustic storefront where windows and vintage appliances were filled with old, classic stickers of sorts. The interior is a cozy mishmash of retro charm and desert kitsch... lots of unique Route 66 souvenirs and memorabilia from stickers and magnets to tote bags and apparel to old expired license plates and the famous "Route 66" road sign. Nice collection of novelty Route 66 merchandise. I purchased a few stickers for my collection and postcards to send to friends. The gentleman behind the register was pleasant and friendly. It was very cool to experience a slice of Americana. Review #3689 read more

Perfect little stop on the Historic Route 66 with all kinds of vintage and retro memorabilia. It's perfectly kitschy. Lots of photo ops if you're looking for that. The walls are covered with dollar bills, and you can add to the collection. Hackberry is the perfect addition to your Seligman / Antares / Kingman road trip if you're looking for a nostalgic journey back in time. If you're looking for souvenirs, they'll carry the usual - t-shirts, postcards, keychains, magnets, used license plates, and whatnot. They also have some cold drinks. The attendant inside was friendly, which I actually find uncommon in places like this, so I was pleasantly surprised. read more

From Rancho cucomonga to needles staying mostly on route 66 I would have to say was not impressive just dessert and nothing untill we finally came across the Hackberry General store. This is what I was expecting to see...A very old run down but kind of maintained store with alot of character....The outsides is littered with alot abandoned vintage rusting cars. There are are a few abandoned type buildings adorned with all kind of route 66 signage. The store itself is airconditioned and has alot of route 66 souvenirs. Of course they have cold drinks and snacks and clean bathrooms. The character of the store is all from yester year with displays of what it used to be in its past. The store is a must see on route 66 and just the feeling the store gave me was awesome. Not explainable you just gotta experience it to know. read more

What a cool place to visit and experience. It's certainly easy to find and hard to miss, because there isn't anything else for miles around. We were leaving Las Vegas and headed to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, and this is right there along Route 66. Be sure and take a moment and look around. This is a blast from the past. Thank you for having us. This is a place that we wont soon forget. read more

Mood - Route 66 History Upon walking up on this amazing feast of eye candy it was alot to take in all at once. So we sat and carefully surveyed the grounds as we began to look at each of the antique gas pumps, cars, buildings, and all of the in-between. The store was ran by Artist Bob Waldmire who had a 1972 Orange Volkswagen Microbus. Which is the inspiration for Fillmore in none other than Disneys Cars. In 2006 Pixar stopped a proposal to name that character Waldmire as Bob was unwilling to sell the marketing rights to Disney for toys that would be in a series for Happy Meals. The city of Hackberry was founded in 1874 when silver was big and booming in this side of the country. The town continued to expand in growth as of 1882 and the local ranchers were able to sell their goods at much farther distances. Once 1919 hit Hackberry became a ghost town like many other small mining communities did after the silver rush dried up.The General store was an important resource for the town as the closest place to gather your needs such as groceries and other items was Kingman. Now picture driving a horse or a Model A in the early 1900's- yeah it took some time. John Grigg opened the store in 1934 originally as the Northside Grocery and a Conoco Station. Mr. Grigg passed away in 1967. There are 6 generations of the Grigg family that are buried in the Hackberry cemetary, and some of the surviving Griggs remain living in the small city to this day. In 1978 the store was closed and vacant after the I-40 bypassed Route 66. In 1992 Waldmire purchased the property hoping to restore the glory as the Route 66 tourism began to really pick up. He then sold the property to The Pritchards in 1998 due to an ongoing local dispute. The population of Hackberry currently is less than 80. Would def recommend - pricing is free. Plus it is a nostalgic piece of history that you get to enjoy. If you driving really fast on Route 66 you will miss it. So I suggest slow down just a bit. Location is is Hackberry on Route 66 - ample parking read more

This is really out of the way for a real treat of nostalgia. If your coming from Kingman Arizona it's 25 miles to here. We had to backtrack the 25 miles as we were headed to Las Vegas. Once here your welcomed with old and crazy displays of old cars, gasoline pumps, metal signs and a rather large old general market filled with tons of displays of memorabilia firm days gone by. It was cool to actually drive on the famous Route 66. They sale a lot of things nobody really needs, but you find you need something from here as a memory. They had some great deals on t shirts! We bought a couple $ 12. That's a deal in today's market. There were several others looking and remembering the past while we were there. It was so worth the out of the way trek. Enjoyed this so much. Hope you like the pics. read more

Fantastic place to stop by on Route 66. In fact, I'd say it's an essential part of the trip. Well-stocked souvenirs, t-shirts, etc but the main appeal are the old cars and buildings they have lining up the place. Some amazing photo ops to be had. Great service, good people working here. read more

We were on a day trip from Laughlin and made a point of taking Route 66 to the Hackberry General Store. I knew from the photos that the building was past its prime, but I was extremely pleased to see how it was cluttered yet beautiful in its decor. The souvenirs inside are varied and not over-priced, the restrooms are clean, and the woman at the counter was pleasant and friendly. When I thanked her for the store being there, she replied that "we are here for you". What a great attitude! Well worth the drive. Highly recommended! read more

This stop is a quickie, but a nice way to break up the journey. Located just a short 15 minute drive east from Kingman, is the Hackberry General Store. The shop was originally run by a local artist, named Bob Waldmire, who helped get this dusty little town back on the tourist map. You'll find plenty of nostalgia on hand here -- vintage gas pumps, rusty billboard signs and a retro jukebox. Clearly, this stop is an Instagram haven. And another fun fact: the shop along with the original owner were the unofficial inspiration of the character Fillmore in the Disney/Pixar movie Cars. read more

Although this store has snacks and many things to buy, it seemed to me to be more of a museum than a store. There is a wonderful lifetime collection of signs, cars, roadside memorabilia, rust, decay and a beautiful Corvette. The interior has a lot of displays and it was a bit of a shock to open the bathroom door and see mannequins in whore house clothing, they seemed so real that I said excuse me before I realized they were not humans that forgot to lock the door I could have lingered here for many hours photography the artifacts, cars and a donkey. And I would seriously consider going back to spend a day here. However, I would not go much later in the year than I did on this trip. The son of the owner told us he had left Seattle to help his father run the business and told us that during the tourist season an average of 1,500 people stop at the store every day. read more

First thing to know about this place.....NO CELL SERVICE! Do not plan on meeting anyone here for safety reasons. We were meeting someone here and not having any cell service (having no means of communication!) was a huge problem! Second thing to know.....there is a woman that sings live, however her voice is soooooooooo raspy! Obvious vocal chord damage from smoking!!!! At first I thought it was a dude, but then when I saw who was actually singing.......OMG! PLEASE STOP SINGING!!!!!! The store was fun to look around in. Tons of Route 66 goodies! I even liked the bathroom. They had 2 ply toilet paper!!! I'd stop again if I'm ever driving Route 66. read more

This is a really awesome place! Here you will find the dedicated "Route 66" themed Hackberry General Store. When hubby saw it and wanted to stop I was thinking "oh geez this is going to be boring" and I was wrong! I figured it was just some guy thing, so why not stop so he could see the old gas pumps and cars. What I didn't expect was to actually enjoy looking at this stuff myself. They have the coolest stuff laying around! I would love to have some of this stuff to decorate my hubby's workshop and garage with. There was an old washing machine that I would totally make a tomato planter out of :) Before I get too far into this, I should mention that you cannot get gas here. They have tons of old gas pumps outside, but none that are operating. Hackberry General Store is really a museum of old route 66 memorabilia. They sell bottled soda and snacks inside, so I had to get a tall cold bottle of coca cola to drink while I stepped back in time for a moment and looked around at all the route 66 stuff. Inside there is stuff everywhere from the floor to ceiling. They have different route 66 souvenirs to buy, a replica diner, a wall where you can write your name on money (your own) and hang on the wall or ceiling, and the best part Max! As I was looking around I noticed a dog laying on a couch. The owner of the store John, told me about him. Max is a rescue dog that has been in in commercials for Harley-Davidson and United Airlines. He is very friendly and wont bother you at all unless you want to go up to him and pet him, which is allowed so I recommend it! I don't even know where to begin when it comes to the outside memorabilia. There are tons of vintage cars and nostalgic signs. I came across a relaxing koi pond and a tree swing. The tree swing was calling my name, so there I was swinging my little heart out and loved every second. Near the front they have a 1957 red Corvette that became popular because of the route 66 television show. If you are going to passing by anyway, just stop and check it out. If you find something inside you want to purchase, but aren't sure how to get it home (they have small stuff and BIG stuff) then they will mail it anywhere in the US. Get your kicks on Route 66! read more

I visited this store three times in an eight month period, and now I know it wasn't my imagination - the proprietors are unfriendly. On our first visit in February, the man at the counter made some very strong anti-immigrant comments to me out of nowhere. I don't look like it, but I'm of Mexican ancestry, so that made me very uncomfortable. A few months later, a lady at the register also gave off vaguely unwelcoming vibes. I'm a people person; I don't mind at all if you're not ... but then maybe working with the public is not for you. However, still worth a visit for the photo ops. read more

WE GOT OUR KICKS ON ROUTE 66!!! BACKGROUND: Hackberry General Store is a museum of old Route 66 and has been called the "mother lode of mother road memorabilia". No gas is sold, but vintage pumps stand outside the Mobilgas Pegasus leaps from the roof and the Greyhound dog welcomes bus travelers. In the beginning, the store provided needed goods to the farming community of Hackberry just across the railway tracks. After all, to make a trip all the way to Kingman used to take at least one day in an old Model A. The town of Hackberry used to be a humble community of ranchers, miners and their kins. The railway came to Hackberry in 1882, loading cattle from area ranches along with ore from the Hackberry Silver Mine. The mine commenced in 1874 when prospectors built a mining camp near a spring along the east side of the Peacock Mountains. The mine was named for a large Hackberry tree that sprang up near the fountain. Mining ended in 1919 but not before over $3,000,000 in gold and silver had been brought about. STATS: Free parking on dirt Free to roam around OUR EXPERIENCE: Ok, so Nat King Cole's Route 66 lyrics has no mentioned in going through Hackberry if you ever plan to motor West. However, if vintage cars, classic soda dispensers, auto-shop "toys", etc... are of interest to you, then I suggest checking this place out. There are so many vintage doohickeys, gizmos, and thingamajigs to play with, pose with, and climb on, we spend about an hour checkin' stuff out, then we went inside the General Store. The inside of the store is filled from floor to ceiling, from ceiling to ceiling, and from ceiling to floor of Historic Route 66 memorabilia, antiques, collectibles, etc.... T-shirts, Knickknacks, hats, mugs, cups, gas pumps, wooden American Indian statues, as well as others. The list goes on and on and on. Like I stated, the interior is packed to the gills with all sorts of items for purchasing. If your interests lie more on classic cars, check out the 1956 cherry red and white Corvette Roadster parked in front of the General Store. Not only a classic car, but a perfect prop for a Cannon (a.k.a. Kodak) moment. Or if you're more the rustic car type, you'll also find a Model T flatbed truck, late 40-early 50's Ford pickup truck, and several others, as well as Berma-Shave signs, and a couple animal skulls. We all got our kicks on Route 66's Hackberry General Store and hope you will to. read more

The general store is what makes Route 66 Route 66. Relive classic and vintage americana nostalgia at this outpost in northern Arizona on the historic road. Don't just stop in though, buy something, even if it's little. In order for places like this to remain a national treasure, find weary travelers like yourself need to spend some money at this place. It doesn't need to be much. A classic coke bottle, some postcards, some desert knicknacks. Whatever it is, I hope that in addition to taking pictures and checking out the over-the-top one-of-a-kind store and fossilized gas station that you will also spend some $$ there. It truly is a place unlike anything else :) read more

I had been excited to visit, as it looks like a cool tribute to Route 66. However, our visit fizzled. Tourists packed it, making it difficult to get around as it is a small building stuffed with typical tourist junk (Hawaiian shirts, Route 66 everything, and obligatory 1950's nostalgia). They sold few snacks or drinks. We hoped for an ice cold soda or one of those giant pickles--something road-worthy, but other than a few common candy bars, we didn't see anything fun or different. Old cars, signs, and busted mannequins decorate the outside. That is...kinda fun? A slightly better tourist trap (Giganticus Headicus) is just a few miles along the same road. It wasn't too much better there, but they did have some pie and a small cafe, as well as a motel, if you are so inclined. read more

Def. a good stop on route 66 but service here was a bit unpersonal. The owner didn't seem to care about the people in the shop and it seemed like just another way to make money. I LOVE this store! This is the epitomy of what gift stores along Route 66 should be. Everything you want related to Route 66 in AZ is here. I had even asked about a framed item but it wasn't for sale. They do strive to keep the memories alive without giving away some of the most wanted items. And how can you beat the '57 Corvette sitting in front of the store? This store meant almost as much to me as the gift store in Seligman that was Angel Delgadillo's. Yes, that store has more items and Seligman is the birthplace. But this place was awesome also. And there are endless photo ops and I sure took advantage of the beautiful day. I guess I got lucky on this trip as it was clear and sunny, here in January. And best of all? Not crowded whatsoever. Probably only one or two others in the store. I would give No Stars, if I could. We checked out your website a couple days before driving home and decided that taking Route 66, when we left Grand Canyon would be an adventure, with the specific idea of stopping at this store, knowing it would take us a couple hours longer. Your website AND the stores' website said the store was open until 6pm, so we knew we had enough time to get there. Well, we pulled up to the General Store around 4:35pm. Took a couple pictures and walked towards the door, just as a blonde woman, looking at us, pulled the door shut and LOCKED it and put up the closed sign!!! I could not believe it. How dang rude and insulting can this woman be? So, we walked up and peered in the windows to see what we missed. But to add another insult, she stood, in clear view, inside the store with her back to the window counting out her "millions" of dollars. She should have let us in and said, hey I'm really sorry be we are closing early - in a half hour.....and maybe hey, I counted out my drawer already, so I can only accept debit or credit. BUT she actually LOCKED us out --- an hour and a half before closing time. This is no "national treasure". This is not worth the stop. We got our kicks on route 66 ---- yeah kicked out without getting a chance to get in! Horrible Horrible customer service. If this lady was not the owner, she needs to be fired! If this is the owner, she should be very ashamed! The store looked really cool and we are antiques, old western buffs that probably would have purchased items but they will never know. We will go out of our way to take Route 66 in this area again. There are so many other places along this historic route that actually want visitors and customers. Shame on you, Hackberry General Store. read more
