The cemetery was established December 21, 1876 by six Black Union Army soldiers: Reuben Walker, David Ireland, William Adams, Lewis Dorsey, William Massey, and Samuel Bowens. Ellsworth Cemetery was created as Black soldiers were forbidden to be buried within the city limits of Westminster. Memorial Day 2018, after many years of neglect and intentional desecration / vandalism resulting in damaged, missing headstones and unmarked plots, the cemetery was rededicated. The Carroll Community Foundation currently manages the cemetery and accepts donations. If you are interested in donating, contact www.carrollcommunityfoundation.org. History is worth preserving.
