Merry Christmas folks. As my gift to you, skip this dog and keep walking. We are staying in a local…read moreBarcelona hotel and received several solid recommendations from our hotel staff. Issue, Christmas Eve, December 24th and all the recommended restaurants are closed. We found a local brewery and sat down for a brew and wine to strategize. Looked at Yelp for ideas and found Mimi's right across the street, open and decent reviews. This is us. Walked in and a very pleasant woman in head garb greeted us and showed us to a two top in the back of the restaurant. We order a beer, glass of wine and two waters. She asked if we wanted tap, bottled or sparkling water. We chose tap. The drinks came and the wine was a split or small bottle of wine, a pint and two glass bottles of water with the tops removed. This should have been a signal that we didn't pick up on. We would be charged for the tap water. Not sure if this is customary but seams odd to me. A gentleman came by and took our orders. We tried several tapas items including the Aioli coco bread, chicken croquets and meatballs. We also order the veal T-bone medium to split. The tapas came out and we enjoyed all three with the meatballs on top. Then the steak was delivered, OMG what is this other than a cows udder? The cut did not look like any other T-bone I had ever had and it was so tough I couldn't cut it with a steak knife. I registered my dissatisfaction to a shrug of the shoulders. We paid our bill and left very dissatisfied. First impressions of the inside was of a low level Chinese restaurant in color scheme and little care for up keep. Walls stained and who ever painted last should be fired due to the poor quality of workmanship. Not a good first impression of Barcelona. We anticipated potential issues with the holiday season and all but I'd recommend skipping this joint and going to McDonald's just down the street.

Ziryab seemed to fit the bill, so we made plans to stop here during our first night in the city. Ziryab is located close to the Gothic Quarter, on side street. It's kind of inconspicuous from the outside, but the interior gives way to a really welcoming space. The restaurant is separated into two main areas, with an earth-tone color scheme that has a rustic, almost cave-like aesthetic. The high ceilings and floor-to-ceiling windows keep the dining room open and spacious. The tapas menu had a good selection, and we decided on several items: pan con tomate, sweet potato rolls, chicken cannelloni, bacon-wrapped figs, croquettes, falafel, and a charcuterie board. All the tapas were great - my favorites were the chicken cannelloni, pan con tomate, and the charcuterie board. The cannelloni especially was a standout - definitely a unique dish, and the chicken was super flavorful. We opted for dessert, and got the feta whip cheesecake - this was great as well. The combination of tang and sweet was a good finisher to our meal. Service was great - everyone was friendly and our dishes were served at a good pace. Overall, I'm glad I tried out Ziryab - the tapas were delicious and atypical of ones you find elsewhere in Barcelona. I would have no qualms returning here for another meal.
