Stay away. This store is well known in the Muslim community as a one stop shop and the management knows this and takes advantage in this way by operating as if they have a monopoly. The customer service horrible, the items are over priced and of poor quality. Also they have a one day return policy and a no return policy for their books. So God forbid you purchase one of their horribly overpriced books and want to return one.
Horrible customer service, the owner(s) are older men who attempt to run the store under quasi-Sharia, telling women wit no hijab that they "should be covered", questioning men during Ramadan that don't appear to be fasting, making comments about customers behind their backs, etc. This store may have a large selection but the items are greatly overpriced and the majority of items are of poor quality. The majority of their over priced books come from Saudi Arabian publishing houses which propogate Salafi/Wahabi Islam(think ISIS, al-Shabaab, Taliban) and offer no real intellectual stimulation or even accurate , factual information.
Their thobes/"Islamic" clothing is GREATLY over priced, you can find the same items for nearly half of what you would pay online and at other stores throughout the GTA. For example the men's rings which they sell at the front of the store run in prices of $100 and up, these same rings are available at other stores for nearly half of Habibs asking price. Their clothing is mostly made in China or Vietnam thus leading to a short wear life.
A quick story: I was in Habib's Bookstore when a women came in and asked the man behind the counter why they sell "whiting" soap. The employee replied that its was a sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (a action or behavior of the Prophet that is believed by Muslims to be beneficial to follow in their own lives). Now this is not only very disheartening but also extremely racist and in accurate. Yes, their are reports of the Prophet having lighter skin. But, this is by no means a sunnah. Humans cannot change or control their skin tone. Nor Islamically are Muslims mandated, expected or even asked to control that. Just realize when you support Habib's bookstore you are supporting a store that doesn't support you. read more
