I would leave a zero if I could. I made an appointment and we were about 10 minutes early to see Sharyle. We entered through the back door from the parking lot and not one person acknowledged us as we walked through the entire office to the front. Once at the front desk it was 5-10 minutes before we were even asked if we could be helped. Sharyle was completely dissmissive of my husband and I immediately and just kept saying it would be at least $500 to do our taxes. She clearly just wanted to get rid of us and not do her job. This place was a complete waste of time and the customer service was HORRIBLE. I would not recommend this place to anyone and will never ever consider them in the future. TERRIBLE! read more

This was my third year working with JoAnne Myers at the Ferndale location. I've had nothing but good experiences so far and I'd recommend her to anyone. I used to work with a private CPA but the fees were a little steeper and it always seemed to take awhile to get the return sent out. With JoAnne I can have a face to face and rest assured that my taxes are sent in before I leave the office. And once they're accepted by the Man, H and R sends me an email to let me know that they've been accepted. It all seems pretty bullet proof. That said, I haven't ever used the home tax software which may be a significant savings. I've just never wanted to gamble with getting the full refund. Additionally, I found out that H and R bases their fees on the types of forms they need to file to get you the max refund rather than proportionate to your refund or based on an hourly rate as many CPAs do. As far as Sean O's review, I can only imagine the aggravation in that scenario but from what I witnessed this last go around, it appears that the software may have been updated. As I watched her input my data they often must type and then retype your personal data so that mistakes aren't made as readily so maybe that's something new or perhaps it doesn't pertain. Either way, I've been satisfied so far and plan on going again to have them eek out a little refund for me next year. read more

Why is it that when I am paying $200 to have someone do my simple taxes I'm having to look up laws on how they can be done because the person doesn't know. No joke. Possibly the friendliest team I've ever met is right here at this location but something seriously doesn't sit right with that. I was going to be allowed to do something I asked if I could do because 'sure if you want to'. No, I'm looking to find out if I'm ALLOWED to do something. Thankfully I looked up said question myself and the answer? Let's just say I would have gotten into a lot of trouble. Also, you need to pay an extra $39 if you want HR to be liable for fucking up? Kind of goes along with the theme here. I felt loved and welcomed as soon as I walked in the door, but by the time I walked out I felt concerned for if everything was done correctly. Come February, the mail brings more than junk advertisements, letters from your alma mater begging for money, and invitations to a dozen weddings and baby showers hoping you'll snag the $600 stroller off the wishlist. The Feds have something on their wishlist too, your hard earned cash, and unlike your preggo sister-in-law, you can't brush them off with a $50 coupon to Costco. Taxes can be a breeze right up until they smash into my investments, which are a fourteen page document that never quite gets imported right into software. I let H&R Block do it, figuring it's worth sparing myself the time and agony of fiddling with inscrutable columns of fussy digits, basics, and other terminology that eventually melts together faster than Crayolas in the summer sun. Six years and counting, they have netted me the biggest refund or the least amount owed. You do pay prettily for the privilege, but when the difference is $800 owing or $257 owing, it may be worth it. Ferndale's H&R Block is conveniently located up 9 Mile right near home. I ended up filing online with the Basic program but came in before I sent everything off to be sure I had set up a few things properly. I was able to ask my questions of one of the in-office staff without a critical wait, though I am sure a few weeks from now, the place will be absolutely hopping. I got solid customer service as I went through the basics on acquisition dates for the 1099 schedule D, and a couple other instances. My questions were answered promptly and I wasn't treated like an ogre stumbling down from the mountains looking for a human to eat. The staff let me know I could come back in if I didn't feel comfortable or confident with the results of the website, and they'd go over it. They are polite and friendly here, not quite rushed, and not entirely hurried. I got my emails after filing that all the material went off to the feds and two states (IL and MI). My only complaint was that I got dinged for double state filing -- it seems pretty cheap considering how basic a case I am (tick off: state, wages, taxes, done). I mean, really, $30/ea? That's where they make their money. I could have filed it myself but I figured I wasn't going to test karma after today's great refund. So I sucked down that bitter pill, and smiled because I still came out ahead. H&R Block also stands behind their filings with auditing guarantees and lots of other bells and whistles if you need them. read more

this H & R block is crap. The tax professional Fran Sweitzer quoted me 500 to 600 $ and said my taxes would be done in a week. I am Canadian and thought this was a great deal. A month later I needed my taxes so I could file in Canada and the bill was 1100 and I had no time to use the "satisfaction " or in my case dissatisfaction " guarantee. My husband and I went in to get our taxes professionally filed for the first time since we recently got married. We waited 20 minutes past our scheduled time to spend approximately 3 minutes with Joanne. She told us that we would have to pay around $400 to add an extra form for Uber AFTER looking at us blankly about what we needed. It would have been nice if she could have taken the time to explain what would have been so expensive but, as she mentioned when she sat down, she was ready to go home. Maybe she could have paid a little more attention to us and a little less attention to what she was going to do after work. read more
