Wasn't sure my current accountant would be up to the task of a complicated business loss filling, so I inquired here (can't remember exactly why). This accountant advised in a somewhat flippant and condescending manner that such a loss was not deductable. Having done a whole 45 seconds of online research on the topic I was fairly certain she was wrong but debating the issue was a non-starter. Which led me back to my original accountant. Who confirmed that yes indeed, this was a deductable loss. Boy did I feel guilty for going somewhere else first. Oh, and the deduction saved us 12k. 12k! I still can't believe this actually happened.

On April 2, we walked in and the secretary told us she was not there. She was at a smoke break. She advised that we should drop our documents off. I reminded the secretary that we already met in February and we were there to pick up the finalized documents. She had them in the front drawer and handed them to me. Nothing was done on them. She had no explanation. Just then another couple entered the office and also said they had a 3 PM appointment. It was the same story for them. They had provided the documents online a month ago. The woman told her to drop them off today. They said they already had done that. She was not there for the 3 o'clock appointment out for a smoke break. No one was in the office but the secretary. It's April 2 only two weeks left before the deadline for taxes. I will be contacting executive management of H&R Block as they should pay for my taxes this year. This caused undo stress. I've spent all of the time preparing and meeting with them already to have nothing to show for it.

When I went to pick up the completed tax documents, I asked for the return of the documentation. I was told I had never brought it in. I knew this was dead wrong and in that moment decided two things : 1) to never use him again 2) not argue since there was no way for either of us to approve our assertions. 2014 is the only year I have with out back up documentation. Perhaps I am home free as it is now 2019 and I have not been audited. The above was not the end of my 2014 troubles. I subsequently received a notice of assessment from MA for 2014. I called Steve and he did help me. However, his charge for the service was costly and I would have been better off just paying the assessment. The above was not the end of my 2014 troubles. In 2018 I received 2 more notices of assessment from MA. This time I just paid it; but I decided to write this review to spare others. Since the dark night of 2014 I have had several accountants including HR Block, with no subsequent trouble. I finally found someone I could trust and work with....Paul Lyson CPA Peabody, MA.
