Around 1:15 AM, I witnessed a really unprofessional interaction here. A female delivery driver came in to pick up an order and was treated rudely and dismissed for no reason I could see. I also heard a comment about delivery drivers possibly not speaking English well. I'm just repeating what was said during the interaction, not verifying it. I am not a food cart person but this place made me reconsider that. First of all - what a completely lovely gent working there to answer all our questions with such patience. We were mighty hungry after seeing a performance over at PSU and I remembered that this spot had a few carts open late. We were there till pretty wee hours and they were still open. A lot of times you get creepers lurking around but nope, just sweet college kids grabbing late night vittles. There are some tables and trash cans across the street by the Engineering building for PSU also. We were going to sit in my car and were sort of annoyed till we saw those seats. Be aware that Portland has rats - it really is a city thing so you will see rats and its not a reflection on the food places and they won't go near you. Anyhoo... my friend is vegan and she was super happy with the options. He was out of a few things and was really great working with her so she could substitute things and also try a lot of things. I asked about the difference between the shawarma and the gyro and it is mostly the bread. They use a standard pita for the gyro where the shawarma is an Iraqi bread made local and it is bigger - do that! That bread was incredible. My friend and I were also delighted that he had Coke AND Pepsi since she likes Coke and I am Pepsi though they also have Orange Crush and I would have done that. I appreciate an ice cold beverage and options - I wish there was ice but that ain't happening at a food truck (which is one of my issues with food trucks) though my drink was wonderfully cold which was great! This place was my favorite meal during our trip to Portland, for both taste and worth it factor. An actually distance too - this place was like half a block away from our hotel and open for the longest hours. My only regret is not having this on our first night as well so I could've eaten it twice! My boyfriend and I split the lamb over rice and the double lamb gyro. Both were really tasty but the dish that keeps me up at night is the lamb over rice. It's just a perfect proportion of everything - rice, meat and sauce. And the lamb is tender and so flavorful. I got the lamb gyro plate and it was massive, enough for two or even three meals. What a deal! Flavor was great too...I enjoyed the seasoning on the tender meat and the taste of the tzatziki sauce. Not a huge fan of the rice texture but that isn't supposed to be the star so I'll overlook it. The owner was in the back of the truck talking to security when I got there, as it was a quiet weeknight. I got his attention and he promptly took my order and started cooking. He even gave me a sample of his delicious lentil soup while I waited, a perfect amuse-bouche for that chilly night. He was very sweet. Quite possibly the best bang for your buck in Portland! I was staying at the Marriot across the street and needed some late night grub and found Gyro Place on Yelp. To my surprise, their lamb gyro here is ONLY $5. Yes, $5 flat. Coming from the Bay Area, I couldn't believe it, where something like that would run upwards of $13 plus tax. Aside from the ridiculously amazingly deal, the lamb gyro is delicious and one of the best I've had. The pita bread was warm and fresh, and the lamb meat was super tender, tasty, and flavorful. They don't skimp on the meat either, as it was overflowing out of the pita. I loved the gyro so much, I went back two more times before my trip in Portland ended. Contrary to what I've read in reviews, they are not open 24/7. I asked and they are open until 2 AM every day. Depending on who is making your gyro, the white sauce can be a bit much, so I would recommend asking for light sauce or sauce on the side. They make everything fresh to order, so it could take 10 min or so to wait for your order. They take credit card. If you're coming late at night, be vigilant in the area, as you will mostly likely run into a homeless person. He ended up closing early after us, so this just may have been an off day for him. My partner and I ordered: - BEEF KOFTA OVER RICE: The kofta was dry and rubbery. - CHICKEN PLATE: Chicken Shwarma was dry as well. The food was excellent. I ordered the lamb gyro and my friend ordered the chix gyro. We could only eat half. I tried but it was just so much. It was fresh, hearty, and absolutely delish. The only negative was the server. He was a bit testy and rude at one point indicating we were on the wrong side of the truck ... ok we're a couple of out of town ding a lings. Excellent Egyptian Halal street food (think shawarma, falafel, etc...), open all day and night, and run by some really nice people! Halal is the rough equivalent of Kosher and offers the same benefits... food that has been prepared from harvest/slaughter to packaging under strict guidelines and inspection for quality, safety, and cleanliness. It's pretty rare to find something like this in a cart, but especially not for such generous and tasty portions and for so cheap! I've had shawarma and falafel sandwiches here. Shawarma is meat sliced off a rotisserie (chicken, lamb, beef) and falafel are vegetarian breaded and fried chick pea patties. Both are placed in a pita with a ton of veggies and sauces (including harisa hot sauce if you want it, a nice extra you don't find often here). The veggies are fresh, the meats tasty and well grilled and the whole sandwich so huge, you will need a fork or risk wearing half of it! They are open for lunch and dinner and stay open quite late... I'm not sure how late, but I've been there at 9pm and they were open on both a weekday and weekend. They have two nice little tables under an awning, which is great if it's raining or on a rare hot, sunny day. The people here are always very nice and concerned whether you liked your food and always ask customers if they liked it and listen earnestly to any feedback, but they took "nice" to a whole new level the other day... . A guy had just gotten a hotdog for his little boy and paid with a $20 he just got from the ATM (right next to the cart at 9th and Alder, convenient!). The vendor didn't have the right change, so he gave the man back his $20 and said don't worry, they could just settle up next time. The whole time, he was joking with the little boy about whether he wanted ketchup or hot sauce (the little boy wanted ketchup and the guy kept saying "OK, hot sauce!"). The first one is GYRO PLACE EGYPTIAN HALAL FOOD. I ordered double lamb Gyro. When the guy who was serving handed me my order...it slipped out og my hand and dropped on floor. Without any hasitation he made me another one with charging me for it. Now that is called A+ customer serviece. I ordered a $5 lamb gyro and proceeded to inhale it like a gyro monster right there on the street. I'm not proud of it. But in my defense, it was one of the best street gyros I've ever had. The lamb slices were plentiful and well-seasoned. There was a lot of fresh veggies packed in there as well. And both sauces, one a red hot sauce, and one the standard white sauce, were both killer and made it even more addicting. My fiancé took a bite of my gyro, then another, then another, until I told him to back off and get his own! No one comes between me and my gyro. This establishment has mastered not only the delicious Gyro but they raise the standard when it comes to customer service, to the highest bar. There has never once been a time that I have ordered from Gyro Place and had a less than beyond satisfactory experience. Whenever my boyfriend and I have placed an order it has always been prepared beyond perfection and we have always been treated with such kindness. I can't begin to tell you how truly rare it is to be a consumer in today's society and be met with gratitude, respect, and appreciation however you will consistently be met with such principals when you visit the Gyro Place. Tonight, after spending what seemed like hours on the phone with a local food delivery service after placing a rather large and expensive order, waiting over an hour and a half for the order to be delivered, only to discover that the very restaurant I had ordered from had taken my money but never had the intention of ever filling my order because they had closed 30 minutes before I even placed it, left me not only incredibly frustrated but hungry too. The delivery service basically brushed it off as though they couldn't care less about the mishap amd then proceeded to act like I was lucky to even be refunded the money I had given them for a service they didn't provide. It was 11:42 when I contacted the Gyro Place with a my (rather decent sized) order when I noticed they stopped taking To Go orders at 11:45 p.m. After the night I was having I was losing hope when I got a response back ensuring me that my order would be filled and delivered. Sure enough, my boyfriend and I got the delicious meal we had hoped for and it was just as amazing as always. We couldn't be more grateful. The night ended on such a positive note after a day full of inconsiderate people lacking business ethics and humanity, simply due to the kindness and care from this local business that we have a whole new appreciation for.
