Dropped in on a Saturday around lunch time for a quick bite. My wife had the falafel pita sandwich and I had the Saturday special, a gyro with fries for $7.50. We also had a piece of baklava. The falafel was good - not the best ever though. My gyro was jam packed with meat. Onions, tomato and tzatziki complemented it as usual. The tzatziki seemed a little different from the usual, but maybe it was just me. It was still good. Both pitas were very good sized - no skimping here. Fries were crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside. A good fry. Service was friendly. Beverages are self service. Restaurant is an average for cleanliness. I will return! Rude to customers, and they make you pay extra for tzatziki sauce for your gyro. Every gyro I've ever bought in my life has come with tzatziki for free except from this joke of a gyro place. Gyros here are meaty and filling. If you prefer your gyro hefty and meat-centric, this is the place for you! Meat is seasoned right, perfect texture and cook, very tasty, and like I said, there is plenty of it. Pita super soft and not one bit chewy. If you want a salad mixed in, you may have to ask for it, because gyro comes with and only a little onion and tomato, no lettuce. Personally I prefer a little more veg and lettuce. Tzatziki was on point. Add a little of their cilantro-based "shug sauce" for a nice herbal and slightly spicy touch, but a little goes a long way. Regular menu prices are a little high, but they run daily specials that help some, including $5 gyros daily from 2-7 pm. It's one of the best deals around. Cook (owner?) is a a very nice guy, super friendly and proud of his food, as he should be. Location is simple, in a strip mall next to a gas station, so don't expect too much by way of ambience. It's more of a quick bite or takeout place. As good as their gyro was, I'm very much looking forward to trying more of their menu. read more

I have been a loyal customer to Greek House for 30+ years and had not had a gyro from anywhere else in over 20 years. Recently, due to the poor service and dirty conditions at Greek House, I tried Gyro Hero. It was ok. Nothing spectacular but not bad either. I would say it is your average gyro place. I will probably try some other places before I go back. I did only try the traditional gyro. This place has literally the best falafel I've ever had in the US. I used to live in New York, and i genuinely prefer this to any of the top-rated (yelp, ny times) places I tried there. Maybe there's somewhere in Dearborn that's this good, but living in Oklahoma, I feel so lucky to have this nearby. Usually I'm a rampant carnivore, but this place is the exception for me. Ive been coming to this restaurant for around 5 years whenever Im in Norman for work. Ive been in here 3 times in the last 3 weeks and order the same thing...gryo and fries and everytime the meat has been very dry. I figured out what the problem is tonight. They arent cutting the meat fresh with each order. They are pre cutting it and letting it sit therefore drying it out. Though it has now been here for a while, Gyro Hero is still a relative "newby" compared to the other long-time gyros places in Norman: Greek House and Ole Towne. Gyro Hero has some things to really recommend it versus the older gyros places: It is slightly larger and more inviting inside than the others, if you are going to dine in and the customer service is far better than that currently at Greek House, which is sadly off its game since it changed owners again. The problem is one that I have never really encountered at a gyros place before. The meat is just not as tasty. How that can be the case, I don't know. Generally gyros places get meat from the same supplier, historically "Kronos" or a close facsimile. Most also use an "autodoner" for heating the meat, but I have seen other methods including heating slices on a grill that have turned out equally tasty meat. But somehow the meat here, though "okay" is just not as tasty as Greek House or Ole Towne. The tzatziki sauce is likewise only "okay" with Greek House being better and Ole Towne being the tastiest. The things that make it somewhat unique are the other offerings, which include include some chicken dishes, dolmas and other interesting items. Check their menu! For my palate, the most interesting and tastiest item at Gyro Hero is the Harissa Aioli that you can use in place of the less flavorful tzatziki they have. Of the two original gyros places in town, only Ole Towne Gyros and Kabobs offers as wide ranging a set of selections with better flavor. However, Ole Towne has had supply issues, while Gyro Hero is usually well supplied. So, though I would normally give the edge to Ole Towne, I have to rank Gyro Hero as currently being as good in a general sense because of the variety of dishes that they reliably have on hand. However, if you are in it ONLY for gyros, I'd likely head to Ole Towne or Greek House. read more

At one time this was my absolute favorite place to grab a gyro - no longer. We hadn't been in for a couple of months, simply because, while we like eating out, I've never been a huge fan of takeaway food. But this place has always been really solid, and I had a craving, so I ordered the $60 family platter for my daughter-in-law's birthday brunch. When I got there I went inside and paid. I was distracted by a phone call, and I'm not accustomed to having to inspect the kitchens where I eat anyway, so I'll go ahead and take ownership of the fact that I should have been more vigilant before paying, but when I looked up not a sole behind the counter was wearing a mask. Not one. When I realized, I was so livid that I couldn't even speak. I just threw my order together, walked out, and threw it all in the bed of my truck to throw away later. As of today, we've had almost 180,000 Americans perish because of the Trump Virus, and seeing these people with straight-up absolute disrespect for that statistic sickens me. I won't be back; not during the pandemic, not after the pandemic, not ever. If they have this little regard for absolute BASIC safety and hygiene, then I can only imagine what happens when nobody is looking. Great fries, decent salad and hummus. The meat is where I was disappointed. It was thin and dry, bearing a portion that would make you laugh even though you weren't amused. I think I've been spoiled by many years of the Greek House, where they pile it on and it is juicy and flavorful. The wontons were crispy but lack flavor, but now I can have the satisfaction of saying that I tried them. I did not receive my side of Shug sauce even though I paid for it. The hummus comes topped with it anyways, so I got to try it. The Harissa Aioli sauce that comes with the fries was good. The place is clean and staff were polite. They have guest Wi-Fi but they don't know the password?? All in all I can say it was just OK. With drinks the cost was near $21 and we left hungry. I am def teetering between 3 and 4 stars here. On my scale, 3 is neutral. Pretty good, not terrible. Gyro Hero opened mid-August, in a shopping center on the east side. Still pretty new center, there's only 3 places in it. We came around 1 and there were 3 other people in there. Fairly small, very hot in there. Menu is on the small side but that didn't bother me. They've got a few appetizers, salads and platters. We tried the spanakopita wontons, gyro wontons (both with tzaziki dipping sauce) and hummus + pita. I def didn't like the spanakopita. The frozen spinach flavor was overwhelming and not good. The gyro ones were pretty good. The hummus also was not good. Something very bitter in an aftertaste. The pita is good though. Overall, I don't need appetizers. I ordered the gyro sandwich (no tomatoes) with fries + extra tzaziki + harissa aioli. First of all, the gyro is a good size and the meat is really good. It's also got brown crispy bits from being seated on a flat top after the spit, and it's not all those flat gray strips like most places. They used white onions, I prefer red. The pita is on the thinner side which I enjoy because it's not insanely filling just off bread. The fries are good. Medium cut with the skins on the end. A course sea salt sprinkled on top. The real star is the harissa aioli. I'm not even kidding. It comes with the fries for dipping sauce. I literally ate 3 ramekins of it. So have my lunch consisted of flavored mayo, which is a new low for me but I don't care. It was so good. I ate a friends scrappy fries, the corner of another friends wontons he broke for, frankly anything that would serve as a vehicle for the mayo. We had this delivered by OrderUp on a Friday night. Even though it was delivered, the food was all still in VERY good shape when it arrived. The standard gyro was great! Gyros can be hard to mess up, but this one was on point. It was huge, the meat was not dry. The pita was not tough or rubbery. I thought it was great. I got a very nice version of what I was expecting. The Mrs. ordered what was essentially the chicken gyro with fixin's. Tons of meat. It was a touch on the drier side, but it was still very good. The chicken is high quality and in chunks (not shaved). Add a touch of tzaziki and BAM, you're in business! The hummus was nice. Pretty standard. The medium size was much too big for two people.
