I'm giving Gypsy Treasure a four-star review as they are a valuable community resource since they are one of the few costume stores open year-round, and they also provide some theater-quality makeup with staff that actually know how to use it. I have been to Gypsy Treasure several times in the past, but this was my first visit since they have moved to the Grossmont Center location (apparently about five years ago). I came in about 5 days before Halloween, primarily in search of makeup and a crown for my Day of the Dead festival look. When I walked in, the place was pretty hopping. However, I was quickly greeted at the makeup counter and walked through the white face paint options, and given information about some of the various color palettes. After some conversation and deliberation, I chose a white water-based face paint and a couple of color palettes. One was glow-in-the-dark. I then asked about flower crowns, and was surprised to find that they only had one. It was one of those cheesy costume kits that came with skeleton hand gloves and skull earrings, neither of which I wanted. However, the price was pretty inexpensive, so I purchased it just for the crown. I looked around for a hat for my husband's costume, but couldn't find exactly what he wanted, though they had some pretty unique hats. Gypsy Treasure has a large selection of costumes for rent, which appeared to be of much higher quality than the costumes for sale. I saw several cute vintage dresses and hats for women, as well as some pretty elaborate costumes. I did feel that several of the costume items in the front of the store were the same quality you would get from any Halloween store. However, I would definitely return for makeup, or if I had costume needs outside of the Halloween season. read more

One of the few all year round costume stores in SD. Going to do my first Halloween party in a long time and wanted to look awesome so I drove from North County to see what they had. I was greeted by Chris and then he referred me to Joelle to take care of me. They have a huge selection of costumes for rental and purchase. I was looking for a warrior costume. After looking at some of the choices that Joellel showed me, I decided to rent an amazing costume. She picked through their selection offering me lots of choices. In addition to their rentals they have a lot of costumes and accessories available for purchase and I ended up purchasing a wig to go with my outfit. I was hopeful, yet skeptical about finding something today but when I walked in the store I knew right away I was in the right place. Super stoked to have a killer costume for Halloween. At this location, several family members got 1920s costumes for my MIL's 80th birthday earlier this year. The customer service was fantastic. The lady helping us was very accommodating and patient. We received our costumes cleaned, pressed, and with everything included. My husband stole the show with his costume, though he was a reluctant customer during the fitting. My work hosted a Bridgerton Brunch so we all needed costumes. I found Gypsy Treasure on yelp and called to get rental information. The gentleman on the phone suggested I come in as they had many dresses that could fit the theme. Several of my co workers and I stoped in and were assisted by an awesome lady and her daughter (they work on Tuesdays). I'm bummed that I did not catch her name, but she was really sweet and helped us navigate through the 100's of dresses. The selection is a bit overwhelming and there are even more choices in the basement that they will bring up for you to try, once you provide some direction on your desired look. This was not a quick visit as there were lots of decisions to be made. I loved that the accessories I needed to pull off "Lady Danbury" were included in my rental price. I thought the pricing was fair and my dress and accessories were steam cleaned, altered and ready when promised. I had the pleasure of working with the owners wife at pick up. She was extremely helpful in picking out a few last minute add ons. They have a lot of cool stuff and most likely will have what you need but the people there seem to get annoyed of you're a newbie. It seems like they get upset when you ask them questions that maybe a makeup artist would know or it's not common sense to someone new to make up. They will set you up with a starter kit. They can also special order. I don't use it but they also have clown makeup and a ton of costumes. This place is amazing. So much stuff! My boyfriend and I went in looking for masks for a masquerade ball. They have one of the LARGEST selections of masks around and incredibly reasonable prices! The ladies there are extremely helpful. We had to have tried on practically every mask in the store and the woman gladly helped us with a smile and helped me pick out the best one. 10/10 would go back and will recommend to a friend. ALSO, Don't listen to the crazies on here...Firstly, I am of Czech and Romainian decent and don't find 'Gypsy' to be insulting or a slur(some people need to calm down), and the store wasn't shoving anything religious in your face and the music was very quiet. Last week was the first time I saw why this store ratings are so low and why there are many negative reviews. I have shopped here for three years consecutively knowing that their customer service was not the best, but this last experience was just over the top. I walked inside the professional costume area to find a particular costume for my husband and there was one customer representative that was friendly. She was helpful and we were chatting then another customer representative makes a comment on how we are chatting too much. The nerve! The lady continue to help me, but I decided not to go with the costume because it would have cost me $85 per day rental. In addition, the costume room smells odd from what I believe the costumes not being well-kept. Afterwards I went to makeup counter to find the costume make up I needed. This gentleman (which did not act gentlemanly) I think by the name Chris asked what I needed kind of rude. I told him what I needed and I was asking questions and he was very short and very vague. Then I tried to ask two other representatives questions and they were helping other customers while trying to answer my questions. I became irritated so I asked the non-gentlemanly gentleman is there another professional makeup store in San Diego. He referred me to Buffalo Breathe. That was the best information I receive my entire time in the store! I called Buffalo Breathe while I was in Gypsy Treasure and the customer representative was so friendly over the phone. We pass by this place all the time so it was a no brainer to come here when Halloween rolled around. We were invited to a costume-mandatory party and wanted to do it up good. We walked into a very busy place and were given personal attention right away. Wanna dress as a ballerina? A princess? How about Jennifer Lopez? And those were MY options! There were literally thousands of outfits available. We considered gladiators (I look great in a toga, BTW), Disney characters, Star Wars villains and bloodied zombies. We settled on a 20's gangster/ flapper combo. They gave us all of the accessories and asked us to pick up the costumes later that week. When we picked up the outfits, they'd been tailored, cleaned and pressed. And we looked great at the party! Although folks thought I was a pimp instead of a gangster. My daughter's birthday was on Easter a few years ago and we opted to throw her and her friends an Easter party. I thought it would be awesome if the Easter bunny showed up. I contacted the store and they said they had a few different bunny costumes. My husband and I went and they let him try on the costumes. (Bless his heart).
