I first heard about Emiliana at Gypsy tattoo from my cousin.. we share a love of tattoos- and i trust her judgement- so I booked my first appointment, for 7 tattoos. (go big or go home, right?) Immediately walking into Gypsy, I felt comfortable and welcome. I'd say this is in part to the fact there are female artists, and it's a known lgbtq+ friendly shop. My tattoo artist Emiliana explained, some shops are intimidating to go into, all men, etc. As a proud ally, this felt awesome to hear. Not only that, but what a time to support women owned businesses. Emiliana was kind, professional, and so patient. She is so easy to talk to and made my 8th, 9th & 10th tattoos from her quite an enjoyable experience. I'll be back for 4 more in November, I can't wait.

Got my first tattoo here 6 years ago and went back recently for another and I was so thrilled to experience the same cleanliness and quality that I've come to expect from Gypsy. I have so much trust in this establishment doing a nice job and safely! Alicia was the artist that gave me the tattoo this time and she did such a nice job with the line work and was so willing to give me creative freedom in the process. Would highly recommend both Gypsy and Alicia (@knifedreams), and would recommend booking an appointment in advance!

Michelle is AMAZING. Seriously. If you want a beautiful tattoo and like to support wonderful local woman-owned businesses, LOOK NO FURTHER! I waited 3 months for an appointment with Michelle and I am SO happy I waited instead of settling for subpar ink. She specializes in fine line tattoos and is dedicated to making sure you get something you truly love! I got a beautiful, 8-inch tattoo of a plum blossom branch and couldn't be happier. As a cherry on top, I had an incredible time talking to Michelle throughout the 1.5-hour session - she's a wonderful, warm, and compassionate human being and I wouldn't have wanted anyone else to do this tattoo for me!

I went here for my eighth tattoo and it was unlike any experience I've ever had getting ink. No aggressive music, pick a tatt off a wall, or angry men who make you feel vaguely unsafe here! The space is light and airy and full of art. Michelle worked with me for a couple months to get the design just right based on an illustration that I love. I was drawn to her because of her incredible artistry and style: she specializes in an old school engraving style that works great with the look I was going for. Her studio is full of art books and old plant engravings. Not only is she an amazingly skilled artist, she's just a delight to be around. She did three solid hours of line work on my piece yesterday, the detail of which is just stunning. I can't wait to come back for color!

What a great place! I've always wanted a tattoo and I was referred to Michelle, the owner, through a trusted friend with quite a bit of ink Her skills are phenomenal and her art is just wonderful. That tattoo that I got was just perfect and I spent quite a bit of time afterwards just marveling at how great it is! I couldn't be happier with my result. She has a deft hand and the pain that I experienced with my first tattoo was really nothing to be worried about. She's very accepting and open as well, tries to foster an environment of love and tolerance in her business. LGBTQ folks are definitely welcome as I am trans myself.

Today I just finished up my last session with Michelle on a cover up piece on my rib cage. The first time I met with Michelle was for a consultation a few days before Thanksgiving. She made sure to take her time and plan out exactly what would not only cover the old tattoo up, but distract the eye away so that nobody even notices what was there before. She has an art degree from The Parsons School of Design, inside of her studio looks like an art gallery, not a stereotypical heavy metal tattoo parlor. The coverup took about 7 hours total, going in for a hour here or there between December and April (my choice, have you ever had scar tissue tattoo'd on your rib cage?!) but all the time and pain was more than worth it. Every single encounter with Michelle and every other member of her staff was always so warm and welcoming. I felt like part of their family. There is a 1 star review posted by someone else because of the price per hour, that person does not realize, you are not paying for the size of the tattoo. What you are paying for is the uninterrupted time and creativity of an individual so that they can give you not only the tattoo you want, they go above and beyond your expectations. Also, they use high quality inks that give your skin the best color. One time Michelle mentioned to me in passing that just the cost of the ink for a one hour session with me cost $30. People forget that the price per hour includes more than what the artist values their time per hour, there are supplies that are also needed to give you the best piece of art that will last you a lifetime.

After much deliberation and research, I chose to go to Gypsy for my first tattoo at a Pittsburgh shop (recently moved from an hour east of Pittsburgh). Kate was highly recommended by one of the bartenders at Hop Farm (props to them too, because they rock as well). As is typical with scheduling a tattoo, they scheduled me about 6 weeks out. Nothing I was surprised by. Well, it was worth the wait. Kate did an excellent job! She spent a lot of time with me discussing fonts and placement. It was more of a collaboration, which I very much appreciated. She worked quick, efficiently, with good attention to detail. Her lines were spot on. The other artist in the shop was also friendly. I felt comfortable and at ease being in the shop. The other artist, Laura, I believe, had just completed a woman's first ever tattoo while I was there. It was the cutest thing, and matched the girl's personality perfectly. As for the shop itself, its clean, well maintained, and the tattoo areas are very private. Oh, and to the best of my knowledge, they have a flat rate per hour ($120 - or at least that's what I was told when I scheduled). I'm assuming, though, that doesn't include extras, intricate artwork, or new drawings and changes. So, don't quote me on the pricing. I can say that Kate's final price fit perfectly into my budget, and stuck to what I was quoted when I scheduled. Thanks for doing such great work Kate! I will be back.

However it was on our Pittsburgh Coffee Passport and so my wife and I headed over. The inside of it is quite an interesting place. It has a floor made of pennies, a brick wall and an intricately decorated ceiling. I am pretty sure they are a coffee shop, tattoo parlor and art gallery all in one. So that means that there is art and t shirts hanging up all over the place. For our coffee on this day both my wife and I both ordered cappuccino. They came out with swan decorations in the foam with spoons made to look like skulls. The flavor of the coffee here was good too. My first sip was a little bitter but it quickly smoothed out the more of it that I drank and I enjoyed it. The bottom line for me is that I would head back here again in the future. Artisan is definitely a hipster place but they have some good coffee for reasonable prices.

The barista steeped the tea for me and brought out a really cool tea pot and mug for me to use. For my group, we were able to push together tables to sit near each other. There were outlets near the tables which was convenient for our laptops. The general volume was quiet as most people were doing independent work on their laptops or sketching art. It's really hipster inside based on the outside art, inside art, and clientele. I would go again if I'm in the area or need to meet a group in a quiet place bear garfield.

I had no intention to deliberately come here, but as I was walking down the street I felt this is where I was going to do it. It was a rainy day and I walked up to the place and looked up and thought, yeah, this is the appropriate place to do so. I had no clue if they took walk-ins, or were able at that moment to do my tattoo. I just felt numb at that point and walked in here. I went to the counter and was asked what they could do for me. I showed them what I wanted tattooed on me and where I would like it to be. After making sure what I wanted would be alright when it would be stenciled they made sure the sizing was right for the area. While they were doing all that I filled out the tattoo waiver form to have this done and just waited until it was time. It had been a few years since I last got a tattoo and was a bit anxious with it all, but the artist that did my tattoo, Jeff, put me at ease. Because of me being a walk in and it being a simple tattoo, I think I took up maybe twenty minutes total of their time. The tattooing itself did not bother me one bit. When Jeff was all finished and he cleaned it a bit, he had me look at it to see how it looked. I went to the mirror, looked at it, chocked up a bit and told him it was perfect. He asked if I was alright and I told him yeah, it just means a lot to me that he was able to get the handwriting perfect. See, I had a bit of a breakdown knowing that my Mom was not going to be signing anymore of my birthday cards, so I had her handwriting tattooed on me from a previous birthday card to have forever. Jeff saw the sadness in my eyes and asked if I needed a hug. I told him I was fine, just having a moment. He then asked again if I needed a hug and I told him I appreciate the gesture, but I am fine. After he was done and had me set up to go, he took some of his time to talk to me about how loss is a tough thing to deal with and that he knows what I was going through. Some people just have the right compassion to be doing their line of work. Jeff exemplifies was a good person is and kind and caring being. I totally appreciate what they were able to accomplish for me, anytime I miss Mom I give a rub of that tattoo am reminded that I am loved. Phew, sorry to be a downer there, but it was an emotional day, and I needed to hear some kind words at that particular moment. I believe I was brought here for a reason. I would definitely come back and ask for Jeff to do my next tattoo. Also, not bad for this being my 2,700th review. Glad it could be this place.

I did my research and after consulting several artists Dooner here at Up in Arms was my final answer! Let me just say that being my first tattoo I was cautious in finding a good artist in a clean, comfortable location. I could go on and on but who likes to read a long review so let me just say, the staff and Dooner are professional and friendly and are there for YOU. The entire experience from scheduling to the preparation to the actual appointment including aftercare was seamless and simple. Yes you must get an appointment months in advance, but you can possibly get a walk in as well. I booked mine three months out but I also had a 5 hour piece of art. Dooner was exceptional and handled my anxiety like a champ. I felt comfortable the entire time other than the first tattoo jitters I'm sure most go through. The parlor was clean and comfortable with a great music selection playing. Conversation was easy and the entire experience, AWESOME! I highly recommend Dooner or his colleagues for your next art piece. You will be stoked as I've already had many people compliment me on mine. I am already considering a second piece, and I know where I'll be going
