We took the tram 2 - 3 times while we were in Amsterdam. The lines seem quite convenient at least to some of the major tourist sites (museums, Anne Frank House). You can check various websites to get the routes. While you are riding, they are good about posting upcoming stops (mostly on LED signs). We did not pre-purchase tickets. Rather, we just used tap-to-pay credit cards. You just tap when you get on and again when you exit. This seemed to work well much of the time, but sometimes it would encounter a card that it could not read. In one case, I had to tap the same card twice (once for me and once for my daughter, whose card failed). It posted some message about using the same card, probably in case you tapped twice by mistake for one person. I was hoping it would not mis-charge us. It seemed confused again at the end when I had to do the same thing again. The fees were reasonable - 2 - 3 Euros per ride, I think. While it is great to just walk around Amsterdam, at some point you may get tired and want to take an easier way back to the hotel. In that case, check these out. read more

Yelp Review 2023 #90: You have two options when it comes to buying transportation tickets in Amsterdam: buy a paper ticket (single journey or a day pass) or download the GVB app. There are pros and cons for whichever option you choose. Paper Ticket Pros: - you can keep it as a souvenir - easier to scan - you can buy at the ticket office or inside the tram Paper Ticket Cons: - you can lose it GVB App Pros: - convenient - you can easily pick which type of ticket is best for you without holding up the line - it's saved to your phone - includes a map GVB App Cons: - if your screen is cracked/ gets cracked then your ticket won't scan - low battery - uses data - you can lose your phone (that would suck big time!) I had the GVB app on my phone. I have international data and I always have a power bank with me. Take note where you're at and where your stop is. Press the stop button after the last stop before your actual stop where you want to get off. Otherwise, the team won't stop. The trams are usually on time but towards late morning to afternoon, delays start to occur. There was a long stretch that was under construction involving 2-3 tram stops so you have to walk 10 minutes to get to the closest tram stop at which point, you might as well keep walking 5 more minutes to your destination. You cannot use your GVB pass/ ticket to get to/ from the airport. The AirPort Express bus is ran by a different company. read more

I was nervous about using the tram but it was so easy. I didn't purchase a ticket however it probably would've been cheaper than using my bank card to tap in and tap out as there were extra charges of non GBP trans fees each time. There is an entrance onto the tram (look for the door that says welcome) and an exit so make sure you go to the correct door otherwise you will upset the conductor.To get off there is a bell and a green button by the door to open the barrier, but remember to check out first! But a great mode of transport, easy to use and easy to navigate! read more

We took the tram a few times. The first time, we bought a ticket for one hour at the GVB Ticket Vending machine near the tram stop. You scan it when you get on and again when you get off at a machine next to the tram doors. The next day, we checked in and out by tapping our credit cards. WOW! I spent 9 days based in Amsterdam and used the tram and metro system extensively. It was easy to navigate and the price was very reasonable. The multi-day ticket is the way to go! Props to the staff on Tram 2! I forgot my phone on the tram (bone-headed move on my part). I was able to lock the phone and put a "lost" message on it. I received a call about an hour later and the staff took it to the personnel office at the end of the line. I was able to retrieve my phone with no issues or no concerns. I would recommend buying the physical card, as the QR code in the GVB app didn't scan a single time - the driver had to look at the code to ensure it was valid. read more

I am a public transport nut when I travel, not gonna lie! Of course I decided to grab a pass for multi use while in Amsterdam and surrounding cities. I mostly rode the trams, but be aware they can be quite confusing, but having the on board assistant staff was a dream as a few times I was lost. As for the bus, it can be the same ordeal, but less help, so know your stops and bus numbers like any country I guess. Price point, very fare especially for a top tier European city, so no complaints on that side. While the trams and buses provide access to everywhere in the city and nearby towns, the metro is quite limited, which I was bummed about. I am sure that is mostly due to the fact that the city is nearby such a mass of water and the multiple canals inward do not help in terms of building tunnels. Either way, I used the metro a few times just for the fun of it, and never had any issues with it (Much easier than the tram and buses, but that is to be expected in any city). All and all a fair experience, but make sure again that you are well prepared as it can be frustrating and confusing for those just jumping on without a game plan. read more

GVB is the part of the Amsterdam government that handles public transportation in the city. Buses, trams, the metro, ferries. Note that NS trains are not part of GVB. It's a very extensive transportation network. You can get to just about any part of Amsterdam without too much walking. I mostly used the trams and the metro. Useful for tourists, though these systems can be confusing as well. The screens on the trams that display route information often were broken. The trams usually could not scan my I amsterdam city card QR code, even though it worked perfectly at several museums (they let me on the trams anyway). There are many route changes, expected and unexpected, that you need to work around. I would recommend getting the physical I amsterdam card if you don't mind the extra 15 EUR or so fee. That way, you won't have to worry about the QR code not scanning or about your battery dying. I didn't get one myself, but I believe you'd pick it up at Amsterdam Centraal (near this office). read more

This firm is stealing money- shame as tram service excellent. It is real share I have to write this as their tram system is brilliant. The problem is their took payment for 4 day travel for my wife and myself twice and would not refund one of them. We paid €42 online then was not certain if I activated them before I was in Amsterdam, so tried once outside Amsterdam rail station. I could not activate them so went to their shop. Waited in queue for 45 mins then the lady equally could not activate them. So only other option was to buy some more tickets on the naive belief they clearly would refund the 42 euros as I had not activated them and never used them whilst in Amsterdam WRONG Back in England I attempted to get a refund for the 42 euros. They asked for copious proof that I had clearly paid for eight days travel when I only needed four days travel. After wasting many hours in email exchanges they're said that we will not refund. On reflection, they clearly had no intention of refunding because, apparently, I need to be permanently on an internet connection and it is my responsibility. It does say that in their terms and conditions but, like a lot of people, I didn't read them. I note from other Google reviews people feel the same as myself that they have had their money stolen. I look forward to a management reply which undoubtedly I will not get. I just cannot understand a firm of this size and basically and run a very good operation makes such an issue over 42 euros which I clearly had paid twice I even said a gesture of good will could they refund the 42 euros and the still would not do anything. read more

Located opposite the huge Amsterdam Centraal Station, and close to both the trams and metro is GVB Tickets & Info. This place is the place to start your travels in the Dutch capital, helping you plan your way around Amsterdam if you are going to use public transportation, as from ferries to metro to buses to the tram, GVB runs most of the public transport around Amsterdam. Here, you're able to pick up a day ticket, it costs 7.50 for the first day in euros and then around an extra 5 euros per day for the length of the ticket, they do tickets lasting 24/48/72 hours etc, or a single hour for just 3 euros. With the 24/48 hour passes, there is a discount for under twelves of 50%. I personally don't understand why they class over 12 as an adult, with the UK classing over 16 as an adult in terms of trains, so the cost for large families could be a little bit expensive. This place is entered through a staircase, there is a wheelchair entrance, which is supposed to be accessible, but this isn't something which is easy to access with the lack of automatic doors on getting into the small area before going into the lift, with both doors requiring to be pulled and not being automated. It's also easy to get locked into that small area too, quite a claustrophobic frustrating space, with nowhere to go and it isn't somewhere you can obviously signal or wave to a member of staff either. The queuing system here was ticketed, you get a ticket and wait for them to call your number similar to the Post Office, the waiting time was average on both occasions. The staff members seemed helpful enough, but neither really friendly or helpful - once again they appeared to do the bare minimum. A decent place to go once, when arriving in Amsterdam to buy transportation tickets for the first time (they are available to buy if you are on the tram anyway), but other than that this place remains poor, it's nothing too special and could be so much better for tourists - two-star rating as despite doing the bare minimum, it is partially useful. read more

Public transport in the Netherlands is magnificent. Just finished 15 days based in Amsterdam. We followed Rick Steves advice and got the Pass that you just add cash to as you need to. Bought it in the airport on way into the country. We used every form of public transport except ferries. Tram, bus, train and Metro all worked exceptionally well. Even directly after the route changes in late July. We travelled all round Amsterdam by both tram and Metro. And to other cities we used train and/or bus. Google is fantastic at picking optimum public transport routes. And even provides platform information. On our last day we trammed to Centraal. Returned our Passes and got 53 Euro cash returned (unused money on pass) also got one way train ticket to Airport (5 Euro). Now my only regret is not visiting a city where I could use a ferry. Cities visited include The Hague, Arnham, Edam, and others. You do not need a car to explore this beautiful country. read more

Easy on and easy off, very short wait times between buses or trams, and most drivers are at least bilingual and very helpful. What's not to love? I was trying to use their service at arrival and departure from amsterdam. In both cases i couldn't use it cause i had no card for the train service and none was able to take my money or visa card. Tram and bus tickets are not necessary if you are staying within the walkable cannabis infested City Center. An unlimited pass allows trips on the tram and bus system. Hubby and I stayed at the Hilton Amsterdam, which was 2 miles from the City Center, so we got a 2-day pass costing €28 each or €19 for a day pass. Amsterdam public transport can be confusing since the stops are for both tram and bus and the value is terrible considering the London Underground caps unlimited trips for one day at £7. The lady at the ticket office had a great attitude to help, but her suggested route to both Keukenof and Zaanse Schase was out of the way... we took an easier more direct route. The customer service here is great! No matter how long and busy the lines are I am always amaze by how excellent the staff are when it comes to customer service. Every time I approach the ticket office for GVB tickets and info I always have a big smile on my face because I am overwhelmed with joy to buy a ticket to jump on the next train to travel right outside of Amsterdam! You can travel comfortably and directly from Amsterdam to so many fabulous nearby cities. If you're in Amsterdam then make sure to take advantage of traveling on the train to so many hot spots. Amsterdam has convenient fast train connections to travel within so many wonderful places. Also make sure to purchase a OV-chipkaart, it's another convenient method of traveling in the Netherlands.Traveling by train through Europe will so enhance and cultivate your European experience.
