We did have to wander around quite a bit to find the bar that contained liquor, but we were persistent! Airport was clean and all employees we encountered were pleasant. We waited about an hour and a half in a very hot line to clear immigration. None of the self-service kiosks were open. When the Schengen line was totally clear, I hoped they would start taking people from our line; no such luck. The gentleman who helped us was nice, but it took way too long to get to him. It is very convenient that the train station is right there in the airport, though I wish the platform system was made a bit more clear no the kiosks when buying tickets. For those of us who don't have this type of transit in our home cities (Los Angeles), it made transportation tough. In fact, we got on the wrong train and what should have been a 15 minute ride from Schiphol to Centraal became an hour-long detour in the broiling heat.

Arrivals: We were warned that the lines would be long because the EU was launching a new biometric system where we put our fingerprints and passports into this machine thing and then that should let you past the gate and into the rest of the airport. it works for the most part, except my friend had issues getting through as her passport didn't get recognized. They pulled her aside for questioning. I waited near the exit wanting to shout "She's real, free my friend." but I figured I'd get in trouble. But 5 minutes later she came out of the gate. Then we waited in this massive room to grab our luggage. We noted so many pretty what is equivalent to TSA workers, even the security guards looked like models. Why can't we have that back home? Then we walked out of this massive airport and then we got our ride into Amsterdam Departures: We arrived 2.5 hours before our flight to Edinburgh and if we have waited in front of the massive queue to check in our luggage, we would have missed our flight. We opted for the check in machines. It took a bit to figure out, but I'd pick it over the big line. Then there was another massive line for security. The security is 2 parts - one to check your carry on and then another to check out of the country. this part almost cost us the flight because despite the various signs - people wouldn't empty their water bottles or liquids - or forget to take out the chargers and laptops - it was frustrating. They also dont show the gate until an hour before so you have to run if its on the opposite side. I think it's an EU/UK thing, because this was a common occurrence in Amsterdam, Heathrow, and Edinburgh. Then I had to run and I ran!! I ran so deep into the airport - thank god for those walking escalator things - it helped cut the time in half. And once I got on my plane I was huffing and puffing. But we all managed to make it in time. long story short: for international flyers - go 4 hours early, bring running shoes, and good luck.

These steps are specifically for the intercity trains which is a what we used. There are also metro trains which centralize here but we did not utilize them or get tickets. The terminal is easy to navigate between the platforms-each one has an a or b depending on the train direction. You can get from one side of the station to the other in about 10 minutes so if you're rushing to your train, it's pretty easy! Have a great trip!

Simply scan your ticket and go to the number two platform. Elevators and escalators available. Signage was clear. The ticket and tour office answered our questions. We had a great breakfast at our hotel, but lots of shops available if you need to pick up breakfast or a snack for an early morning train ride. Great way to travel from Rotterdam to the Paris Olympics on Eurostar.

It is convenient to their home (not a far walk). If you visit Leiden, it is close to the medical center and university. Tons of trains arrive and leave here, so we never had to wait for very long for the train we needed. Dutch trains are very much on time, unlike Germany! If you need a snack or drink, there's a small Albert Heijn and a Backwerk on the lower level, as well as kiosks on the platforms where the trains are. Toilets in the train station do cost so have some euros for that.

Overall clean and easy to navigate. The surrounding streets are mostly residential though heading southwards there are more office and commercial buildings. As a busy commuter station mornings and evenings you'll hit rush hour conditions, expect densely packed platforms and train cars on both local commuter trains and the M52 metro line. There are separate entry points for each type of transportation so you need to scan in and out of the respective areas, via chipped credit/debit card or smartphone payment method or QR code. If you pay by card or phone they will charge you by distance depending on where you scan in and out, same for buses and trams. Single/multi-ride ticket machines are also available in the station. Some parts of the platforms are exposed to the outside elements so keep that in mind if it's rainy/snowy. Bus and tram stops are located a short 2-5 minute walk depending on the line you're trying to catch. There's public bike parking underground accessible via a couple entrances with ramped escalators (as compared to normal stair escalators) to accommodate bike traffic. To reach the city center, by metro or tram it's about 15-25 minutes depending where you're heading, by train about 10 minutes to Amsterdam Centraal. To Schipol Airport it's a 10 min train ride.

I give it five stars for the beauty of the architecture blending in with the surroundings as well as the travel options this station allows. If I were lazy after visiting friends out here and didn't want to cycle home, I could either get on a train or tram to eventually get home (hint - cycling is always faster and more reliable in Amsterdam). Nice station for going towards Utrech or Amsterdam Centraal. From those two options - you can get everywhere in Western Europe.
