I have been seeing Dr. Peabody for several years now and I've had my fair share of dental work done. Dr. Peabody and his staff are very welcoming and help ease the nerves of going to the dentist - especially for those who haven't been in awhile. He is gentle, explains the treatment, and always calls to check in after having treatment done. I always feel very well taken care of. He is meticulous in his work, and honest in his recommendations. The office staff is also great and has improved over the years. They provide cost estimates and out of pocket costs have always been clear prior to services. This dentist is a complete con artist. He sold me a retainer and it ruined the 4 years of braces I had . My mouth used to close perfect and now it's completely off . The actual crown he put on is totally screwed and he charged the absolute top dollar! When I informed his office it was off they all bullied me he was the worst he went from the nicest guy ever to the biggest dick I've ever met in a professional setting. They also must have caller ID because when I called for my records they would not answer then I would call from my friends number they would pick up . Don't be fooled I used to have the most beautiful teeth and now my mouth needs braces and a new crown . UPDATE: because doctor Peabody made me wear the retainer that screwed up my alignment then did a crown that was too high and refused to file it down at the very least because he thought he was in the right my crown that cost a considerable amount of money has now cracked and so now I will have to have a real dentist property fix this problem . We are so grateful to have found Dr. Peabody. He truly gives detailed and individualized attention to his patients. He genuinely cares. The receptionist today was absolutely kind and caring over the phone which is so important since essentially she is the voice/face of the business. This place is well rounded and professional all around from beginning to end, our experience was amazing! I completely recommend Dr. Peabody. We could not find any doctors during this crazy pandemic and despite not being in the office he made the effort to reach back out and check in. I am writing this with mixed feelings and a heavy heart. Dr Peabody is an excellent dentist. He comes across as kind, friendly and caring. I feel that I have gotten good explanations, treatment and service in general from him. Unfortunately it is the complete opposite with the front office staff, dental assistants and their billing practices. Having just read a few other unfavorable reviews on here, it seems like a common theme. It's a shame because he really is a great dentist. I will try to be brief about what occurred. One occasion, I was told my insurance would cover my crown 100%. I had great insurance. I asked the front desk if she talked to my insurance company and she confirmed that. A few weeks later I received a bill from Peabody's office charging me for half of the procedure. My calls went unanswered so I wrote a note on the bill asking why the charge and that I was told it was covered in full. No response for months. Just bills stating I was past due. Finally someone responded after several months and said it wasn't covered after all. I confirmed with my insurance that it was only covered at 50% but they did say they never would have said it was covered completely. That was a few years ago and I decided to let it go. I was having a few issues with pain and food getting caught in the crown. Having had another crown done and subsequently adjusted in the past with the adjustment at no charge, I assumed the same would be true in this case. I decided to ask the assistant before treatment to ensure we were on the same page. She said it would be $150, I explained that I wasn't charged for an adjustment previously. After consulting with someone, she came back and said yes, it will be at no cost unless we need to do an X-ray, in which case it will be $45. X-ray needed to be done. I agreed. Afterwards, front desk lady said I owe $350!!! What?? I explained everything to her as outlined above. She went to consult with someone twice before agreeing to wave the office visit few. Now the bill is $250. I explained again that the X-rays were to be $45. They said $45 each and I had 4 done. No one explained that to me. Long story short, I was charged $150 after they wrote off the three X-ray charges and said I still had to pay the $100 for the diagnosis. Again, never explained. The front desk lady was rude. She would not let me explain what I was told by the assistant. She just kept bullying over me until I finally asked her if I could talk for a minute. She stopped talking but turned away and busied herself with paperwork and the copy machine. Rude. I won't go back only because of the rudeness, miscommunication about fees and the general nickel and dime thing they have going on. Dr. Peabody is a life saver. He fit me in on a Friday evening for extreme pain I was experiencing. He discovered an infection above a tooth, relieved my pain, called in a prescription and gave me a referral to an endodentist! My daughter and I have been going to Dr. Peabody for over 10 years. Before going to Dr. Peabody, I had not gone to a dentist in over five years. My dentist back home had died, and all the dentists I had had since then were mediocre at best. A friend at work suggested Dr. Peabody due to the kindness and professionalism she experienced, so I decided to give him a try. I have been a patient of Dr. Peabody's now for about a year, and I have to say, hands down, he is the BEST dentist I have ever had. I have needed quite a bit of dental work done over the past year-root canal, fillings, crowns (this is why preventative care is SO important!)... I have been so absolutely impressed with his work and the work of his hygienists/rest of the staff. DO NOT GO HERE WITHOUT GETTING ESTIMATES FROM OTHER DENTISTS. I went to Dr. Peobody for some fillings caused by me grinding my teeth and to get a night guard fitted. I had followed his recommendations for doing the fillings as well as some extra deep cleanings to get my dental health where it needed to be. Where the care I received from the dentists was good, I am dumbfounded how they are able to charge such exorbitant amounts for their work. I called 8 dentists in the area and got quotes for the exact work I had done by Dr. Peobody and not one of them quoted over a third of the cost that Dr. Peobody charged. For example the night guard was quoted at just over $1,200. Not a single place in town I called charges over $500 (depending on insurance). Also, I was quoted $220 for a normal cleaning which all the other places I called quoted around $100. Please do your research and do not get ripped off like I did. They quality of work and care is not worth the extra cost whatsoever. read more

Dr. Peabody is a really good dentist. When we first moved to Santa Cruz I decided to check around (meaning ask around), review Yelp, etc., etc. before contacting a practice for my dental services. . A few of the reviews weren't positive, YET most were so I believed the practice was probably pretty darn good. I was right. Look, if a business's Yelp (or other social media) reviews are only positive, I am suspicious because you can't make every person happy -- it's impossible. There's just a few people no matter what a person or business does can make happy. It's either the person is normally negative or is having some personal issue(s) that is making his/her life miserable & it starts bleeding into other parts of their lives -- they can't recognize it only blaming others not realizing it's coming from within. I'm a realist. I also know how medicine works -- it's expensive, it just is. My brother is a cosmetic dentist, husband is in regular medicine (both combined have over 45 years of experience), providing superior work is not like going to McDonald's for a value meal--paying as little as possible for XYZ. Great, cosmetic dental work (or plastic surgery) is a specialty. If a patient has complicated dental issues like I do (and some other patients do too) then you have to spend money over and above your dental insurance on an annual basis to have a set of intact teeth or you end up looking like a Halloween character (with missing or discolored teeth). Dr. Peabody and his staff have been great. Always checking up on you after ANY services have been rendered and if you happen to have complications like an infection, severe pain etc., etc. they will immediately contact a pharmacy of your choice to prescribe Rxs to get underlining problem under control so you aren't suffering. Then, check up on you again to make sure Rxs are working as prescribed and confirm follow-up appointment(s) as needed. Finally, Dr. Peabody is pleasant, extremely knowledgable, beyond experienced, and does great work. Dental hygienist, assistants and receptionists are friendly, accommodating and lovely so your dental experience is as painfree as possible. read more

What a ripoff this guy is!! I made the mistake of listening to a friend without consulting my own dentist first and really paid the price. Literally! Peabody changed his "evaluation" on my 2nd visit when everything changed. Turns out I'd have to pay an additional $1500 for a "stronger" bridge. Not what he told me on my 1st visit, and what I based my decision on. After that 2nd visit, I turned to my dentist. Turns out my own dentist's cost for the same work was $3000 less expensive, not counting the additional $1500!! Not only that, I left my dentist 2 days later with a temporary bridge, and Peabody wasn't going to get me ANYTHING for a month. If you value honesty and value, do NOT go to Peabody. read more

I went to Dr. Peabody after an abyssmal experience with Dr. Tod Anderson in Aptos. They have restored my faith in dentistry. The staff - incredible, kind, sweet and sensitive. Great with follow up and care. The hygenist -- best dental cleaning I have EVER had. Dr. Peabody-- Wow! I can't say enough. I was rather scarred by my last run-in with a dentist. He was understanding, truly interested in what had happened, kind, professional, level headed. He listens. He is detailed and meticulous -- his checkup was the most detailed workup I have ever had (and I have had my share of dental work). The guy knows his stuff and has corrected very poor work that was one in my mouth -- which he showed me with digital camera shots and xrays. I had five hours of reconstructive dentistry with Dr. Peabody and they really took good care of me, offering a light sedative to help me through the work. We're getting things fixed and I'd recommend them to anyone. What's best is that, while their office is rather kitschy....I love it because it has personality. Every single person I have met in this practice HONESTLY CARES about people - and I'd take that over a dental massage chair any day! I think they actually love what they do and they're good at it. I was not impressed with the cleaning that I got spent a lot of time on how much tartar was on each tooth. Dr Peadody did not come in to check on hygenist work. I have been a faithful patient of Dr. Peabody's for almost 10 years. Office staff were always wonderful, with very efficient follow up. Dental hygienists were consistent and Carol was amazing! However, about a year ago - appointments were cancelled, dental hygienists changed almost every time I came in for cleanings (every 3 months) and things were not being run smoothly. I came in for a cleaning, had a new hygienist who then recommended that I have a deep cleaning. When I came in for that procedure - she told me that she could just do it in all one appointment, instead of the two - I happily agreed. Later I received a bill for twice as much as I was told would be my portion, after my insurance. I called the office several times to inquire about it, no one returned my calls, I came in for my next cleaning, I was told that someone would get back to me ... nothing. When I came back for another cleaning, I finally said that I would not pay until someone got back to me - again I was promised ... nothing. When I went in for another cleaning, I was told that the fee was waived but it couldn't happen again?? Nobody explained anything - I then overheard that insurances never pay for that particular procedure done all in one sitting. About a month later I received a letter stating that Dr. Peabody was terminating me as his patient. Dr. Peabody never gave me the courtesy, of a loyal patient for almost 10 years, of talking to me to find out what happened or having his office take responsibility for their mistake. I use to go to this dentist. Key term is "use to". This review falls in line with Trudy K's scenario of the lack of concern with regards to your money. Here's what happened to me. And just you all know, I went to this dentist for years also. I acquired coverage outside of my work coverage to see Dr Peabody. His office staff, specifically Chelsea, who apparently is suppose to check insurance, never did. Didn't find this out until I had already seen Peabody, AND was there for a cleaning three days later by his hygienist. I was presented a bill for 860.00 for what she stated was just an upper quadrant, NOT my complete mouth. When I asked if the insurance didn't cover this, she then, and only then, checked to see if I was covered. That right there told me she never checked previously regarding my initial visit three days prior. I never had my teeth cleaned. My insurance was NOT useable at his office. His staff never made sure I was under his umbrella of carriers, although I made sure they were before I set the appt. I then requested his office manger contact me with regards how this whole scenario was handled. Never got a call. All I received from him was a return letter, with a stamped signature, stating that because my insurance was not covering his services, that I now owe the full amount of what was done on the initial visit with him, and that no other appointments will be set for future dental care UNTIL his bill was paid. I can tell you all with the utmost sincerity, if you happen to use this dentist, you had better make sure you have your bases covered, because they have no intention of making sure you are aware of the costs involved, nor the charges above and BEYOND YOUR INSURANCE CARRIER, if you happen to have coverage; IF they happen to check. I have ex-rays there, but won't be wasting gas money nor time collecting them.I had my new, professional dentist collect them for me. I now have a dentist who is better on all levels of care and costs. So long Peabody, you need to re-evaluate your approach, and come to the table with your costs. I am pulling my siblings from his service as well....Just very poor customer service, and a HUGE lack of concern for your pocket book. read more

Carol is THE BEST, I don't know how my teeth survived all this time without her. When I floss (every night, that's right!), I floss for her so that she isn't disappointed when I see her again. Her easy and funny demeanor make getting your teeth cleaned as positive an experience as it can possibly be. I have hated going to the dentist ever since I was a little kid and had awful experiences. I always had terrible pain with procedures and would honestly have preferred to lose all my teeth than to ever try again. A friend recommended Dr. Peabody very highly and I have been glad ever since that I went. I was treated with kindness and respect. My issues with pain were addressed. I was as comfortable as I could be during long procedures. Dr. Peabody is excellent at explaining what treatments I needed and was exceedingly patient with my many questions. When I had a dental emergency, he called me right away and made sure I got the medications I needed and saw me the next day. I saw Dr Peabody last year. I left a 1-star comment here, but it was deleted by the clinic. What a shame! I believe that the doctor loves his money much more than patients' well being. (1) The doctor found a few problems in my teeth but did not talk about the treatment plan or the price until about 2 weeks after the first appointment. At that time, Dr Peabody maintained that it was an emergency case. Still, he did not talk with me about the price. The staff in the clinic then showed me the treatment plan and asked me to sign. The total amount reached several thousand. If it was really an emergency case, why did you wait till about 2 weeks? Dr Peabody, you needed some time to figure out how to let me sign the treatment agreement? (2) I had a tooth which was badly decayed, but not bad enough for a root canal treatment. Dr Peabody recommended to remove part of my tooth and to have a crown on my tooth. It is ridiculous to me since removing tooth structure is costly to the patients' health. Well, it may be because I am not professional. OK, maybe you were not completely wrong. However, when I saw the next doctor, and Dr Peabody's "advice" was proved to be unnecessary. (3) I took a full mouth X-ray at Dr Peabody's clinic. I needed further treatment on my tooth which Dr Peabody was unable to do. He recommended a few specialist, but I did not visit any of them. I followed a friend's recommendation to a clinic which Dr Peabody did not refer to. I was in Dr Peabody's clinic one afternoon and asked them to email the X-ray a couple of times. They did agree. They refused to confirm with the clinic I was going to visit. The clinic didn't receive the X-ray from Dr Peabody's clinic. The next morning I made a couple of phone calls to Dr Peabody's clinic about this problem, but they intentionally missed my call. Eventually one staff picked up the phone, promising to send my X-ray. -- and asked me not to call again. The X-ray was eventually sent, but only for "one-tooth", not "Full mouth"! I was not aware of it until I visited that clinic. I would recommend all of my friends NOT to see Dr Peabody, despite the fact that Dr Peabody has a degree from one of the best Dental Schools in the world. Dr Peabody and staff are very friendly I had a cleaning today with Carol She is amazing!!! She made me few so comfortable the whole time. This is the first visit in my entire life where I wasn't scared, nervous or felt anxious. She numbed me with a gel for extra comfort and I opted for the gas to help me feel relaxed. This was the first time ever that I didn't feel like I was "gross" because of the condition of my teeth. She taught me so much in one visit. I love that she never made me feel bad or gross for not flossing enough I can't say enough good things about her including it was nice to feel like I'm part of the team as far as my dental health. I changed to this dentist last year because my dentist didn't seem thorough enough. I thought I was going to love going to this dentist. The hygienist was extremely thorough and explained to me why I need to floss every day. The hygienist was so thorough that she asked if I would come back the next day so she could finish scraping my teeth. I thought "These people are so nice. They even have you back the next day". Noone explained that the next day's visit would be my second visit of the year. When I went back for my six month cleaning, I got a billed for the whole amount because the dentist's office had already billed my insurance for my second visit. I called them and let them know that they had never informed me that I would be using my second visit to finish the cleaning. I have excellent teeth and gums so I am not a usual candidate for two days of cleaning. I argued and they did not back down. They said that they always explain their billing policies when they ask people back for the second day. I remember vividly thinking how nice and generous they were to have me back the next day. I was forced to pay the bill without my insurance and collected my x-rays and left their office. I now have a very nice dentist downtown, William Christie, that takes good care of me. read more

I dislike writing negative reviews. I thought a long time about whether or not to write a negative review, but having been a patient at this office for several years I felt I did have a balanced perspective. Several years ago, when Anne and Jet were the office staff, I would have written a different review. The fees were still EXORBITANT relative to other dentists, but at least the office staff was friendly and helpful and HONEST. My last go round at Dr. Peabody's office was extremely off-putting. The current financial staff person was not forthcoming, RUDE and very uptight when I dared to question my bill. Here is the scenario. I needed a complex filling done, I asked what my insurance would cover (i've had the same insurance for 10 years and they HAVE my insurance data on their computer.) She cheerfully said 'Your insurance covers 60%." I booked the appointment, knowing I could cover 40% of the bill; it was a stretch but I could do it. The day of the appointment, they have me pay, up front and the amount I have to pay is WAY over 40% of the quoted fee. I asked about this, got the run-around and grudgingly PAID the amount, feeling pretty angry about it. But I was there, finally at the appointment date and so went ahead. I needed the filling. Later on I phoned the office to get further clarification and when I asked about the quote of "your insurance pays 60%" she finally became so exasperated with me she blurted out the truth: "LOOK! YOUR insurance pays 60% of THEIR fee schedule, not OUR fee schedule! Their fee schedule says this filling should cost $187. We charge $347! So YOUR insurances pays only 60% of $187!" She was really irritated when she told me that. When I said that seemed exorbitant on Dr. Peabody's end she snapped at me "Dr. Peabody is a PREMIUM dentist! His work is excellent! He charges premium fees!" Wow. So I left this "premium" dentist and visited a wonderful highly recommended dentist closer to my work and lo and behold, I do NOT have the cavity I had still to be filled acoording to Dr. Peabody, I also did NOT need root planing as they had told me at Peabody's office. Additionally, Dr. Peabody was going to make a custom mouth splint for me for TMJ and was going to charge $900, where my new dentist will make the identical splint for $500. My new dentist is every bit as gentle (even more so actually) as Dr. Peabody and also have 3 months to make a co-pay for more expensive procedures. Dr. Peabody's office merely tells the patients to take out a Care Credit card and demands all payment up front. Bye bye Dr. P! read more

While Dr. Peabody appears to be a caring and compassionate man, his business practices left me feeling extremely uncomfortable and, after trying to point out the very disorganized front office staff and horrible billing practices, Dr. Peabody sent me a certified letter letting me know he was no longer willing to provide me with dental services which, to me, makes it seem as though he is not willing to improve his front office and billing practices. I came to Dr. Peabody for my daughter, who needed a filling. We arrived for our appointment on time and were then notified that we were not in the system. I showed the front desk people the texts and e-mails I had received confirming the appointment and they said, "Oh, yeah, we had a glitch in the scheduling software. Sorry." That was it. I stood there, not knowing exactly what to do. We'd driven a half hour to the office for this appointment, my daughter had rescheduled her day... I pressed the issue and they said there was nothing they could do, so I rescheduled. I tried to assure myself that mistakes happen. My daughter was thrilled with Dr. Peabody and had a good experience, so, weeks later, when I took her in for a cleaning, I scheduled one for myself as well. My daughter loved Heidi, the woman who cleaned her teeth and, again, she was happy with her experience. I was excited to have a new family dentist, since we had recently moved from out of the area. I showed up for my appointment for the day of my cleaning and was told that they would be taking x-rays and photos of my mouth. I agreed to this and then asked if the cleaning would be taking place after. The assistant looked confused. "No, you're not scheduled for a cleaning." That was the whole reason I was there. She then said that it is state law that a new patient undergo an exam prior to being treated by a dentist. I looked into it afterwards, and it is not state law, it is considered part of best practices by the ADA. I was frustrated and wasn't sure if I wanted to continue with the appointment. I said that I felt that the video and photos were excessive. I just wanted to get my teeth cleaned. The assistant said that I could either run through the process, or find another dentist. I was already having second thoughts as they had yet to do anything to earn my faith. Peabody looked at my imaging and suggested replacing two or three fillings. He said the rest looked just fine and he was inclined to leave them. They said they would call to schedule an appointment to get the work done. In the meantime, I came in for a cleaning and, at that time, Heidi again shared with me the plan Dr. Peabody had for replacing the fillings. When the scheduler called, she told me she was scheduling me for four crowns and three filling replacements. I was stunned. When had the plan changed? Why had no one called me? What happened to everything else looking fine? I questioned her and she put me on the phone with her supervisor. I told her that I was confused about the treatment plan. The woman said that it hadn't changed, that he wanted to replace 2 fillings with 3/4 crowns and five others with conventional fillings. I said, "That's not what your scheduler said. She said 4 crowns. That was upsetting to me and she should be more specific." The woman then told me that the scheduler would never have said that. "But she did say that," I said. "That's why I'm upset." She continued to insist that I misheard. I asked about why things had changed since my cleaning. That Heidi had told me the original plan was in place. This woman told me that Heidi would have never said that. That the plan was to work on 7 teeth all along. My appointment was on a Tuesday and I then got an e-mail the Friday before, in the afternoon (they are closed on Mondays), saying that I would need to pay $2000 up front and that my insurance would cover anywhere between $0-1649 of the work. I had to pay up front for my daughter's appointment, even though we have very good insurance, and, when insurance paid, Peabody's office held onto the money. I asked for it back and, months later, even after calls and e-mails, I have yet to receive it. So when they asked for $2k, I had to draw the line. This is not something you drop on someone the business day before the appointment without discussion. I have never in my life had to pay a deposit for dental work. I cancelled my appointment and asked them to forward my records to my old dentist over the hill. My dentist reviewed the records and said, "He wanted to replace seven fillings because you have seven fillings. I hear this all the time." My dentist then, without a deposit, worked on one tooth and told me that he didn't think the other's needed attention at this time. Because of this experience I am left to feel as though Dr. Peabody's practice is dishonest and disorganized. Heidi is great, and Peabody seems nice enough, but I have never had such a frustrating experience with a dentist in my life. read more

I have been going to Dr.Peabody for over 25 YEARS..... that i think says it all. He is a DYNAMITE dentist. They do TOP SHELF work at this office. excellent work, showing and explaining all the work they will be doing. You are kept very informed about all work. Dr.Peabody is so very GENTLE. If anyone is afraid to go to a dentist.. Dr. Peabody is your guy, you will not be disappointed if you come here. He and his staff will take excellent care of you . I can't say enough good things about Dr. Peabody's office. I am TERRIFIED of the dentist and waited years before going back. I am thrilled I chose Dr. Peabody. He is patient and listens to your concerns and addresses them with you slowly. He works with you at your pace and is very gentle. He even called me on a Saturday afternoon to check on me and make sure I was doing good after a pretty intense treatment with him! The office staff is amazing. They are so concerned with making sure you are comfortable and relaxed. They remember your name, and details about you they don't necessarily have to. Carol (hygienist) is so sweet! She is so gentle and makes getting your teeth cleaned not so bad at all. These guys are great and if you are afraid of the dentist like me, I'm telling you - go see Dr. Peabody!!!!! read more

Teeth-- what can be more important, troublesome, expensive, painful, easy to let go, hard to get worked on? For many, teeth equals trauma, with a huge dose of guilt, and expense and even danger. I've been to all types of dentists and I generally appreciate those who put up with my squirming and assorted neurosis. At this point, I need to trust my Dentist's skill and honesty. For the past 14 years, I have seen a guy who is extremely nice, seems to care about my comfort, and has an outstanding life story, to say nothing of his wonderful sense of humor. Yet, over the years, I slowly realized that his work isn't good. His bridges break and they break soon. His crowns break and they break SOON. No temporary that he has ever made has stayed in more than a few days. My last crown was extremely difficult to have done and has bothered me for two years. So, I dentist shopped a bit, and due to a problem my son is having -- high number of cavities during his years with braces -- we ended up at Dr. Peabody's office so my son could get many fillings all a once under sedation. That all went well, and I was so happy that the skill level was evident. I didn't want to go to a dentist just so my son could be sedated, I wanted skill and honesty. I was so impressed with Dr. Peabody and every single person in his office, that I decided I would transfer over to him myself. To review his strengths: he has a consistent, detailed process that exceeds what I have seen elsewhere. He is intent on doing a masterful job. There are so many pieces to this, and it takes patience from his patients as well as his staff and from the doctor as well. Teeth are taken extremely seriously there and when you leave with a newly repaired tooth, you leave with something IMPRESSIVE. I might be a difficult patient, but I don't want sedation. I'm aware of every poke and prod, every second of drilling, every impression, everything. I compare with past experiences, and I can see many differences. The attention to getting all sorts of impressions and photos pays off in a better end product, perhaps it is not an exaggeration to say that it is incomparably better. It was extremely difficult for me to make this change from one dentist to another, and it meant changing my son along with me. However, the confidence level I now have is what I needed. This is a 5-star Dentist and a 5-star office. I note that one reviewer has an issue with teeth cleaning taking two days and costing as two visits. I did not experience that, nor did my son, but I do have to say that I was extremely impressed with the hygienist. read more

I have always had anxieties about going to the dentist even just for cleanings, for as long as I can remember. Dr. Peabody and his whole staff have really dissolved all of those worries. I was in so much pain and discomfort for years, and now with sedation dentistry and the trust of a very gentle Doctor and staff I can get my mouth in order and healthy again. I will be able to live my life pain free again. I am so greatfull for Dr. Peabody and his entire staff!!! read more
