I recently had a loved one pass. We decided on Gutterman's Funeral Home for all the funeral preparation. Unlike many od the others who wrote reviews I had a good experience and had no issues at all. We delt with Christine who was great. She helped with everything and made everything easy for us. We decided on no service at the funeral home just a service at cemetery. Christine made arrangements for everything from 2 limos to take us to cemetery in New Jersey to all arrangements with deceased. Everything was easy and done with no issues. I think Gutterman's was great . I do not know what other funeral homes charge or to be honest what it cost to pass . Not sure if Gutterman's is expensive or cheap but they did do a great job. During the most difficult time of our lives, from the moment we called and then walked in to meet them, we felt supported, understood, and genuinely cared for. AVOID GUTTERMAN'S AS IF YOUR LIFE DEPENDS ON IT! If you are reading this review, you are probably grieving as my family recently did. I am sorry for your loss and pray that you learn from the mistakes my family made when we made the horrific decision to hire Gutterman's. Trust me, the only thing that can make losing a loved one worse is hiring Gutterman's for their funeral service. In our initial conversation with Gutterman's, they said all the right things and promised they would meet our loved one's final wishes. However, all of their assurances were lies. In reality, Gutterman's failed to meet their end of the agreement and, upon complaint, constantly invented excuses for why Mr. Gutterman was consistently unable to speak with us to address the matter. As we continued to reach out to Gutterman's about the issues during our mourning period, another one of the owners researched our family members and EXTORTED us based on publicly available information about them. Our loved one would be turning over in their grave if they knew how Gutterman's treated their final wishes in regard to the funeral service and their beloved family during our mourning period. No matter how long someone may live, life is too short to pay sky-high prices to Gutterman's for their lies, deceits, and inappropriate behavior. You are in enough pain during your time of grief, please do not make it worse by trusting Gutterman's while you are at your most vulnerable. read more

Losing a loved one is hard enough - Gutterman's Funeral Home made it possible to say goodbye to our Mom with so much respect and dignity. The entire staff at Gutterman's was as patient and professional as anyone could ever have hoped for. We received exceptional service from Funeral Director, Dominic Carella. Dominic made us feel comfortable during a very difficult time. He was compassionate and helped guide us through the entire process. We never felt pressured to do more than we wanted, and he provided excellent ideas for making mom's service unique and meaningful. Dominic was very accommodating and understanding. We had several unique matters to manage. Dominic's advice, communication skills and responsiveness exceeded our expectations. I also wanted to mention Ken, the Funeral Director who was present the day of Mom's service at the cemetery. Ken went out of his way to make sure every single detail was perfect. The weather forecast that day was calling for rain and Ken made sure to bring enough umbrellas for anyone who needed one. You just don't find that attention to detail everywhere. Every single thing that Gutterman's Funeral Home did was way beyond my family's expectations. We are eternally grateful to them for everything surrounding our mother's death and the services that they provided. Terrible experience. My stepfather passed away and was a die hard rangers fan. We even had a Rangers jersey on his coffin. While we all spoke about hoping the Rangers would win the Stanley Cup the rabbi closed with I hope the rangers lose and Phillies win. Rabbi said " we stole his thunder " in our eulogies Kept saying at the funeral and cemetery please call me for a happy occasion not this type of thing. It was like an advertisement for 1800Rabbi. Never heard a funeral where a rabbi talked so much about himself 6 daughters. 24 grandchildren. Likes the Phillie Flyers. I felt it was terrible to make any part of the service about himself. The constant advertising was disgusting. I personally do not recommend using one of their rabbis read more

Sorry for anyone that uses these people for a funeral. Worst experience I ever had. The service was held up because they over booked. Then the procession of cars to the cemetery was told the hearse driver will stop at every light to ensure nobody got lost. Total BS as half the procession got lost. Then at the Mount Ararat Cemetery we waited an hour for them to open the grave. Gutterman's should have informed them so they could be ready. Total FUBAR. I would rather have my body layed out on Rte 25 as a speed bump then use these incompetent idiots. read more

I had a bad experience with this funeral home. The night my mother died, I called Guttermans, as it was the only place that I knew of from a former relatives death, and I didn't feel like shopping around. They told me that they would pick up my mother's body by around 10 pm and no later than 10:30 PM. They finally arrived at 10: 45 PM. As I was in the same room as my deceased mother, my cousin tried to keep me on the phone until they picked the body up...........she did this I believe out of kindness and sympathy for what I was going through..............the phone call went on and on, and she said where are they already?..........they said no later than 10:30 PM.........why don't you call them to see what's happening? I didn't call as I was numb and stone faced with grief at the whole ordeal, so finally they showed up.........15 minutes later than the very latest they told me to pick up the body. Their prices are outrageous. For a basic cremation, no ceremony and no urn, they charged upwards of 5,700. Oh if you're paying by credit card there's an extra 3 %.............they didn't tell me that over the phone, how convenient. I just wanted to get the heck out of there. The person I spoke with said well, they have grounds to keep up..........trying to make excuses for why it was so expensive. How insensitive and especially at such a grief dazed state of mind. When I picked up the ashes, they had some printed piece of paper that they were sorry for the loss...........it looked like it came from a basic form............fill in the name. Absolutely no sense of caring or sympathy. Also, they added in their own gratuities...............how pathetic. When my father died, we used this funeral home, and the driver of the hearse was throwing a fit because of some confusion how to get to the VA Cemetery in Calverton. The person who handed my mother the American flag after the service, seemed to truly care.........my mother said he had tears in his eyes and a mournful expression................and no, he didn't work for Gutterman's. This place is so impersonal and money oriented it is a disgrace. read more

My mother passed away early this year. My brother called to see if someone could meet with us at about 4pm to talk about arrangements to have my mother cremated. He was told that by the man on the phone, Adam Novak, that he was leaving soon for the day but if we hurried, he would be able to help us. Upon our arrival, Adam was very gracious and welcoming. However, knowing from the original call that he needed to leave imminently, we can make sense of the multiple mistakes he made that have caused us unnecessary pain, suffering and aggravation. Adam wrote my mother's name down incorrectly and I am now battling to have her name changed to her correct name on her death certificate. As it turns out, her social security number was transposed incorrectly, making headaches for my husband who is handling her financial affairs. Finally, I called Social Security the other day because I was continuing to receive mail from them in my mother's name. When I finally reached a representative, the man told me that the funeral home had not notified them of my mother's passing (over 2 months later). As part of the very expensive cremation fee, a call is supposed to be made by the funeral home to social services on behalf of the family. Adam failed to make this call. I reached out to a senior person at Gutterman's recently and all of my recited issues were rebuffed. No apology or any compassion...just one excuse after another for why the problems with accuracy and/or attention to detail occurred. Not impressed...I lost my mother. I expected care and consideration for the enormity of my emotional loss. I expected to receive the services for which I paid. Instead, I am dealing with anger mixed in with grief and it is unnecessary...the least a funeral home can do is to not add to a person's suffering at a time of such emotional distress. read more

The least Gutterman's could do is to spell the name of the deceased correctly. The name of the guest book was spelled wrong

It is customary for the procession to remain together but when we got the cemetery, 1/2 of the procession got stuck in traffic on a main crossroad. The front of the procession proceeded without the rest of us. We wound up missing the whole graveside service and I mean the whole thing. We found everyone when they were exiting!!! Gutterman's should coordinate with the cemetery to hold the traffic or place flags on all of the cars. Totally unacceptable and EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTING!!! read more

My mom recently passed away and Gutterman's was contacted to handle the arrangements. Her remains needed to be transported to NY from MD, and Gutterman's handled it all. They were compassionate and professional. In short, they handled everything beautifully (including the processing of the death certificate). I couldn't have asked for anything to be handled differently and I highly recommend them. read more
