We were staying in Redhill at the illustrious Travelodge in preparation for an early flight out of…read moreGatwick the next morning, so we found ourselves in a place we'd never been and in need of dinner. After some looking online, we decided on Everest Spice and it was a good choice! Very much like our local Indian restaurant, it was pretty empty on a weeknight at 8pm. A few take away orders did go out while we were there, and it's possible they were also doing a roaring delivery trade that we wouldn't have noticed. However, despite the lack of atmosphere, I still enjoyed my visit. The staff were attentive but not pushy, and didn't try to upsell us on anything. We skipped starters and poppadoms (£3.50 for poppadoms? Nothankingyou). We had a veg side, a gorgeous garlic naan, some rice, and a main each for around £30. We could easily have shared a main as it was more than enough. My favourite thing was the sag paneer - not too iron-y, creamy, or greasy, with lovely fresh cheese. Sure, it wasn't some authentic, ambitious, trendy curry - but it was tasty and I'd go back!

We missed more than hit in a few countries so we were in need of cheating. Other countries just refuse to season the food!!!! We needed a bottom of the belly tasting meal. This was it. Today we go back to non seasoned British food to practice the British culture. Don't get me wrong, the food is always fresh, & real. Like a chicken tastes like chicken instead of Purdue Plastic Parasites Bones. Imagine real chicken slathered in season then topped with creamy coconut. Bonus is the staff, cool people.

Hard not to like this place. The Gurkha Kitchen is a classic example of why Nepalese Restaurants…read moreare so popular: An original cuisine & charming staff. They must be the nicest people on Earth (after me & you, fellow Qyper - well, me anyway. Not you. You're a bit funny....). Be sure to check out their totally groovesome website! Not EVERY restaurant site has this kind of ethnic chill out soundtrack you know. Mind you, it could be a little wearing if they all did............. The menu is online for all to see. Oh yes, avoid the Himalayan Beer. Like the snowman, it's abominable. Select my personal Beer of Choice (BoC) Cobra. Yes, I know it's Indian. Get down with the Indo/Nepali fusion, er, dude.

The starter of a lamb and vegetable broth was light, yet flavoursome, and an excellent appetiser. So it was disappointing that my curry main course was just so bland. I was really hoping for something very different to the usual curries, but I could easily have imagined getting something similar from an Indian takeaway. My wife's noodle dish was reminiscent of chicken chow mein you'd get from the Chinese takeaway. Having never eaten Nepalese cuisine before, I can't tell if it was just bad luck or if they've blanded everything down for the local Reigate crowd. A real shame.
