I finally worked up the courage to call, and Sako -- the owner and instructor -- offered me a free introductory session. I thought I'd be a good instructor for my 9 year old son who has been holding a pick correctly since 18 months of age but let's just say . . . I was wrong. He doesn't listen to me, shocker, right? I ran into Trevor from Guitar Ninjas at a school event and after first disregarding the idea it dawned on me that perhaps all of our lives would be easier if I wasn't his primary instructor. Although my son has a very high degree of musical talent he also has a very low degree of work ethic. Over the years he has had lessons with a different place which is a great place with wonderful people but it alway felt like I was inconveniencing them by asking questions or trying to be involved. He didn't really learn much other than one chord over 4 months so I took him out of it. Granted, he was younger and that was 3 years ago and he didn't touch a guitar for those 3 years. He started showing interest again last year so I started teaching him some stuff but A) It's nearly impossible to teach your own kid and B) my frustrations with it were creating a bad vibe. I called Guitar Ninjas and spoke to Jason the owner for about 30 minutes. He was extremely open and flexible and said I could sit in the lesson if I wanted (I do not do that but the offer was nice). He sent me their syllabus and I was pretty impressed with the approach as it is geared towards kids. It is very structured with concrete milestones to "graduate" to different levels which are structured similar to karate belts which is great incentive for kids especially. Most instructors/schools are almost exclusively focused on the left hand with chord fingerings, etc. and they start with chords that are very difficult for beginners of any age to learn without either quitting, feeling hopeless or frustrated. The GN approach puts a particular emphasis on strumming and right hand techniques from the ground up using achievable chord voicings. They also have standard songs in each level with backing tracks in their online portal which can be adjusted for tempo. btw - they don't suggest kids "practice" but "play" guitar on a regular basis which is actually quite brilliant as "practice" sounds like a drag. Jason thought Lucas would be a good instructor so we set up a trial lesson. When I ran the idea by my son his reaction was "sure, I guess" so not overwhelming enthusiasm but that's my son but he was kind of interested in what level he would place in initially. I told him probably the bottom despite the fact that he was playing barre chords with maybe 30 hours total play time. We had the first lesson and I waited in the waiting area as I want my son to establish his own relationship with Lucas. The lesson went great and I could overhear most of it. They placed him as a green pick (4 levels up) to start which is high for his age but he was pretty stoked to hear that and he was pretty stoked to continue as a Ninja. We have been taking lessons consistently for maybe 5 weeks and his playing has grown SO much. Lucas is a great guy with a great background and seems really good with kids. Now, I can assume the role of the dad that teaches him stuff outside the Ninja curriculum and just making sure he is doing their assignments correctly. So, I guess I could give the Ninjas a stellar review!

Since it was my first real project ever I decided to have a professional do the finishing touch, a proper set up to make sure the neck I had installed was on the way it needed to be. I decided to take my work to my local guitar shop. I thought it would be a straight forward process, but I was wrong. The worker here had told me that my guitar needed sanding down and even this would probably not work. I was quoted a large amount of money. It was even implied that my guitar might not even be functional despite all this. My review on this place is a separate issue so the last thing I will say about this place is that I took my guitar back heartbroken and not knowing where to go from there. I am lucky enough to work with a lot of great musicians and came to a friend of mine with my issue. He immediately recommended Grayson's Tune Town, told me to ask for Erik specifically. He gave me Erik's information and that same evening I contacted him and explained my situation. The only downside was that Greyson's is about a fifty minute drive for me with no traffic. Taking traffic into consideration it becomes an easy hour and a half. I sent pictures to Erik and he tried to diagnose as best he could without me coming in to the location. We set up a meet and it was on. I drove an hour and a half and to my pleasure this shop is beautiful. The staff here is extremely friendly and accommodating. Erik finally took a look at my guitar in person and said that everything looked perfect. I was cautiously optimistic at first, given what I had been told days prior by the first shop. I left my guitars (I had decided to take another guitar for a set up) and was told it would take about two weeks to complete the work. Two weeks might seem like a lot, but Erik was just coming back from some time off and he was catching up on some orders. He told me it is normally a week turn around. During my waiting period I was in contact with Erik every couple of days to check on any possible issues. He was so incredibly patient with my messaging him and promptly responded each time. I even sometimes felt bad messaging him with questions, but he never once made me feel like I was bothering him. The two weeks were up and him and I set up our final meet. I drove another hour and a half to pick up my guitars. Erik even met me earlier than planned because I had an appointment to make later that day back home. You ever hear the phrase "You get what you pay for"? Well, the level of service I got from Grayson's and Erik went far beyond that. Considering the first shop quoted me so high with little to no promise of any results, but at Grayson's the quote was less than half of the other place and most importantly the guitars came out PERFECT! Especially my build. While paying for the services I even bought a cool tote bag because I wanted to support them even more. Walking out of there I felt like I had just robbed the place and all they did was smile at me lol. To me it was not even about the money in the first place. The level of professionalism and results are all that matter in the end; the price to me comes second to those. Personally I love my guitars. We all save our hard earned money and purchase these instruments that bring us joy, peace, and for some people they even put food on the table. These instruments are important to so many of us and they deserve the best in our eyes. Grayson's and Erik are the definition of these qualities. suddenly the hour and a half drive was miniscule when looking at the big picture. From now on I will gladly spend that time on the road knowing that my instruments will be serviced at Grayson's. Who doesn't like a good road trip anyways? If you are hesitant about this shop, do not be. The standard has been set incredibly high and I'm all about it. One last time: Thank you Grayson's and thank you Erik.
