Understaffed and the system the employees use for purchases is horrible. We had both of our daughter's doing guitar lessons and that was a horrible experience. There was one guy that did the scheduling and he was never there or didn't answer the phone. If we had to miss a lesson because of life there was no option to push the lessons back and scheduling a make up lesson was impossible. We eventually just quit going because of how badly it was managed. read more

I have shopped at guitar center Richmond since It opened when Mike grub was store mgr . Over the years the customer service had made changes .. it used to be the sales rep was more flexible with prices to an extent where on new or used items they would discount them at times .. the equipment gets scratches and dents being played over and over .. now they wanna carry even more expensive Items . After the bankruptcy some items they don't carry anymore it maybe over the bankruptcy agreements per those items ... Last summer my brother n law used a prototype parts Gibson to trade on another real production Gibson guitar . However to their credit they did a small discount so I could get the prototype parts guitar back .. if they would have researched the serial number properly they never would have let him use the item to trade for another... Over the years I have bought many musical things there .. guitars , amps, pickups ect.. in November 2024 I purchased a 2024 fender player 2 strat at the Richmond location it was brand new .. since my 45 days expired I took the guitar to sell to them .. the salesman Tim told me that he researched the serial number on the fender website and the guitar didn't exist .. so they could not purchase it from me ... But u sold it to me for 700 in November u didn't say it was fake then... Just surprised hope others don't get this treatment as well ... read more

I love this place. I love that everytime I visit the store someone random is playing guitar in there. I can just sit and watch that all day! So, today I bit the bullet and signed up for lessons!!! I'm super excited and ready to learn. There a special running for lessons. 4 39 min sessions for $109. Registration fee waived!($30) and a gift bag. I had an intro session for 15 min with an instructor who was so helpful. He showed me some things to practice and I'm so ready to go back for my first official lesson. I will never again be a Guitar Center customer after a horrible service experience. The item I bought was a poor fit for me, something I could not have determined in the store. At the time of purchase I was not informed that the item was not returnable. When I tried to return it three days later I was told that they could not accept it because it had been used. If it's impossible to try it out prior to purchase, customers should be informed that if it doesn't work out for them they are out of luck. My salesperson did not tell me this. I saw no signage to indicate this at the point of sale. There is also nothing on my printed receipt to indicate this. When I called Guitar Center's customer service line I was told that there was nothing they could do for me and that my only recourse would be to speak with the store manager. I then called the store and spoke with the manager. Brick wall. Not returnable. Not our problem. You're screwed. I hope someone reads this review and chooses to shop elsewhere. We visited a month ago to figure out what equipment we wanted to set up an at home recording studio. We didn't want to purchase anything that day but Luka helped us figure out what we needed. He never pressured us to spend any money or buy the most expensive product... Instead, he gave honest opinions. Fast forward to today, we returned to make our purchase. Knowledgeable people who can answer all your questions. There was a power outage the last time I was there and it was total darkness. The lights came back on after 2 minutes but I was surprised they don't have a generator. Anyways, they offer music lessons but you have to schedule them on the instructors time frames. Be very careful about how you are paying for lessons. If a lesson is canceled with proper notification and for any legitimate reason such as instructor vacation, your vacation, illness, etc., you DO NOT receive a refund for the lesson that was prepaid for and missed. You receive a lesson credit. These credits can accumulate over a year and are very difficult to redeem. Who can double up on lessons during the week or allow another instructor to jump in and give you a make up lesson. If you decide to cancel your instruction with Guitar Center you will eat all the lesson credits that you acquired unknowingly. This can add up to hundreds or even thousands of dollars. You have to know what your getting into! read more

Tim (sales associate) is a great example of what customer service should be. I stopped into the store and asked about servicing an electric guitar. Unfortunately, none of their service techs were available. However, Tim explained to the manager that he would take me to the service counter and do the repairs and restringing himself. The store was fairly busy at the time, and he could have easily explained that I needed to come back another time, when their service techs were available. Tim went above and beyond to provide the type of service that will keep me coming back to them! read more

The clerk avoided eye contact with me and was indifferent when I asked for help even though I was one of three customers in the store and the only one in his department. There was a man, Blake was the man's name, hair greased just the way I like it, about 5'10.5"...handsome guy. I'm talking a sturdy build. Ain't no one pushing this fella over, he's deep rooted like a blue spruce!!! Now I just wen in for a single Ernie Ball string, and I ended up buying me 14 American Standard Strats in sunburst and a new Crate 15w combo instead! I drove to Richmond from Charlottesville to purchase a guitar combo amp and a micro bass amp head. I go into Guitar Center and look at the bass heads then walk over to the counter, since the amp head I was looking at (Trace Elliot Elf) wasn't plugged in. A gentleman asks if I need help. I tell him yes I need help with micro bass heads. He goes over and starts going down the list. I tell him I want to use it for recording without the cab, and asked if I could try with headphones. He says you can't use amp heads without a cabinet or it will fry the amp. He walks me over to bass preamp pedals and says this will do what you want. I say, it doesn't sound right that you can't go out of a micro amp head into a mixer or DAW audio interface. I say let me do some research since it sounds like he doesn't know what he's talking about or is not listening to me. I go back over to the Trace Elliot, confirm that it has a headphone jack AND a DI output. I go back over to the counter and say I'd like to hear the Trace Elliot. The same gentleman, who I suspect was a manager, tells another employee to help me hear the bass amp. He immediately goes pulling cables under the counter. I say do you have just a 1/4 inch for the bass and maybe some headphones. He says we don't have headphones for customer use. I say hmm, ok, I'd like to hear the unit without a cabinet, which is how I'd use it. I say do you sell headphones? He says yes, back there...as I walk over he yells out, "they start at $50". A few minutes later, he walks past me and says there's some AKGs for $49. I say I already have headphones at home, I just wanted to hear the unit without a cabinet, which I wouldn't be using, and certainly not whatever cab they connected it to in the store. I say thanks. He says, we have a 45 day return policy so I could take the bass amp home and try it on my headphones, and return it if I didn't like it. I said, thank you and started walking out. He says, as I'm leaving, I'd like to help you but we can't accommodate you. My problems with the experience are: 1.) The first gentleman was wrong, you can certainly connect micro bass amp heads to a DAW audio interface via the DI output AND the unit I was looking at had a headphone jack. 2.) I wasn't looking to use the product at home with headphones, but direct out into mixer or audio interface. I only said maybe try with headphones to avoid having a cabinet interfere with me demoing the unit. I'm not there to buy a cabinet or headphones. 3.) I wasn't there to buy a bass preamp pedal 4.) You tell me you don't have headphones for customer use, but you sell them. Ok, but you have a recording section with mixers and monitors and what but no headphones. Also, it wouldn't have been possible to take the 1.6lb floor unit over to the mixer/monitor section for me to demo, similar to how I'd use it?? I resisted the idea to just buy the headphones, test the Trace Elliot Elf amp head, and immediately return the headphones. I didn't feel like they really gave a damn. So, I wasn't going to give $800 to them for the next thing on my list, a tube combo amp for guitar. Instead, I went next door to Sam Ash, which didn't have any micro bass heads. However, they did have a number of nice amps. So, I ended up choosing the Marshall DSL40CR. I felt like the staff "wanted" to help me. I'm not sure why the first gentleman told me the product shouldn't be used like I intended and briefly steered me to a preamp peddle, or why they couldn't produce headphones, or didn't suggest that I try it on one of the mixer/monitor setups they had, or stop and listen to what I really wanted, but I am sure that they weren't busy and I didn't get the feeling that they cared whether they got my business or not. I've spent probably over 5k there over the years, and was hoping to another $1200 today, but I'll think twice before I spend another penny there. read more

Not only was he willing to fix the problem, replace equipment that was missing and exchange a broken product, he helped us find a much better quality guitar and amp, and really helped us feel that guitar center cares about its customers. The staff goes out of their way to get what you need. For purchases, they have a layaway option. Their prices are very competitive and their product options wide and varied. Not too many choices these days in Richmond for musicians other than online shopping. I still prefer to haul it to the west end and visit Guitar Center with ANYTHING I could possibly need from bass strings, instrument cables, DJ equipment, lights etc. The staff is always friendly and USUALLY knows more than me about most things. First, let me say say that my experience here, which was absolutely excellent, was due to the exceptional service provided by Chris. He is a genuine professional and absolutely attentive to your particular needs. In my case, I visited for the purpose of looking at amps for my newly acquired electric guitar. Because my experience with guitars was limited to acoustics, I did not have the language to express exactly what I desired in an amp, for this was my first purchase. Chris was very enthusiastic to help me, so much so that he took the time to walk away from what he was working on to show me exactly how each amp differs from the other. What I found particularly impressive was that Chris recommended I seriously consider the Fender Mustang (which was around a mere $100), in that I am a beginner and that I am still in the stage of evaluating my interest in electric guitars. I was very impressed by this recommendation, for it spoke of a genuine recommendation free of commission or any other thing that detracts from my genuine needs. Chris was more interested in making sure he provided me with proper guidance than he was in selling me any single thing. As a salesman by trade, I can appreciate this greatly. I told Chris that I would like to view options above the Mustang model, which he was happy to do. He took a considerable amount of time explaining to me precisely the options they offered and was sure to evaluate their appropriateness based on my needs, which includes future, unrealized progress and needs for options that I cannot fully appreciate at the moment. We ended up discussing the Fender Champion 100 at length, and I chose to buy it. Chris was super cool in terms of conversation during the transaction, which was important to me in that it added to my experience and memory of buying my first amp. Chris saw that I was carrying my 18 month old kid and insisted on helping me transport the amp to my car, despite the fact that there were other customers in the store. Chris was very polite in telling the customers that he'd be with them right away, but that he needed to assist me in light of my hands being full. The customers, naturally, were very receptive to Chris' service and smiled. Though I live in Williamsburg, which is about one hour away, I will absolutely, positively drive to this location for all my guitar needs. read more
