Guitar Center is garbage. Just from the perspective of killing off small music stores I try on principle not to shop there but now a days it's pretty much the only music shop in town and I have to resort going there to buy strings. In recent years this place has really turned into a joke. Especially their used gear, I'm always blown away at their inflated prices for pedals and microphones. In the old days you could go to guitar center and negotiate, now all you can do is pay their sticker price (which is always higher than anywhere else). They treat their staff like garbage and their is a high turn over rate with employees. Many of my friends have worked at this location and all said it was a terrible experience. I came here to exchange my Martin acoustic electric for another because it had a chip in it. On the day I bought the acoustic guitar from Guitar Center on Sunset, I got home and noticed a chip on the strata bond neck of the guitar. :( Inspect what you're buying before buying it people!!!! It will save you some time and gas. The sales rep that helped me out seem really bothered when i wanted to exchange the guitar. He couldn't even see it in the beginning till i had to point it out. Come on!!!! If you were to drop 1000+ bucks on a guitar or anything else, I bet you would want it in perfect, mint, new condition. I also asked him if he could show me amps. I told him I was interested in buying an amp sometime near the future but not now because i just blew over a grand on a guitar. After that, his attitude seem to change for the worst. Yet, He did very quickly. In & out. I didn't even get a chance to ask all my questions about the amps. He didn't say thank you or good bye....and it hurts my heart till this day...i still lose sleep and have nightmare about it. :( I'm not too sure so don't quote me on this but I heard they all only work on commission or partially for commission? So, i guess they'll be friendly to you if they KNOW you're buying something from them. Even thou this is the closet Guitar Center from home. So, I went on an adventure to guitar center in search of a needle for my record player. The staff was incredibly friendly and helpful- the man that was helping me, Jorge, went above and beyond his duties to assist me. Their store did not carry the specific needle I needed for my record player and were unable to order it- but, he still went out of his way to find another store that carried the specific needle I needed so I pick one up on my way home. I've been coming to this Guitar Center for 6 years. As a professional DJ and pro audio geek, I have gotten everything from speakers to gaff tape. I went there today to buy some audio adapters and took a routine stop at the used gear section for any obvious deals. I spotted a DJ controller I wanted to pick up, so I wandered the audio section looking for an available employee. After 15 minutes of waiting, I had to flag someone down to get any attention and he didn't work in that section so he left and in a few minutes introduced me to "Taylor" who would be helping me. I pointed out the controller and asked for a price check to which he responded, he'll be right back. After 10 more minutes of waiting, I walked to the service desk to where they would usually look up prices. WTF!!! I saw Taylor intently helping someone else. So I walked away from the DJ controller deal, put my audio adapters back on the rack and left. I probably won't be spending anymore money at this Guitar Center. With Amazon.com, eBay, Musician's Friend and other online stores, there really is no reason to go to a physical store than for good customer service, to be waited on and actually experience the gear by getting a demonstration. From my experience at this store, customer service has taken a huge drop since Sean Lassler left. He knew his stuff and when he didn't know the answer, he wouldn't try to BS his way to one. He actually got my email and followed up on a question I asked about a product I was researching. And followed up on that follow up to see if I had selected a brand/model and to email him back if I had any more questions. C'mon Guitar Center the only advantage you have on the online market place is the ability to provide an enjoyable buying experience. If you're not going to make sure your employees are attentive to your customers, you might as well just put up store sized vending machines everywhere. I had called this Guitar Center to find replacement parts which i was told by two people over the phone, would be able to be ordered. i then got a message saying "come in, we'll have the parts". so i go in and even tho i meet the guy who called me in to the store, he makes me wait 30 minutes even tho there was nobody in the store. the only people there were myself, one younger kid and about 20 GC staffers walking around. the person i spoke to comes back and says "well, we don't have the parts but we can order them for 29.99 and shipping is 9.99". i ask why he didn't just tell me that over the phone and he replies "hey, that's how it goes, take it or leave it". i had also mentioned that a competitor store had offered the parts for $3.50 each and he burst out with "should have gone with them i guess". he kept asking if i wanted to order the parts "or what", i walked out at this point. This store is, as mentioned before, a giant clusterf*ck. There are too many people "offering" to help but nobody actually helping. i understand pushing products to make the sale but there's one important thing called Customer Service which goes an extremely long way. read more

Don't listen to the negative reviews. This place always treats me nicely and is eager to help. They are very knowledgeable and can answer every question I have. Especially the guitar sales associates. They have an extensive collection of guitars and audio gear. Only complaint is I wish there was a slightly better drum section, but they are called "guitar" center after all! I scrolled to see the bad reviews and I hope this review proves every single one of them wrong. This Guitar Center is probably one of the most helpful and BUSIEST that I have ever been in. If you want help here, you need patience, cause honestly, if you're the last person to come in, OF COURSE YOU'RE GONNA HAVE TO WAIT. I came in looking to find help with my dj equipment, im a beginner and completely oblivious of everything. RALPH and MATTHEW helped me, and they were so awesome. They took the time and helped me with buying the right gear and troubleshooting softwares blah blah etc. In about 30 minutes they have been more helpful than Native Instrument's Tech Support has ever been to me. It took a while for them to get to me cause they were helping other customers, but I was patient, and like I said above, you might have to wait a little bit if its busy. When they get to you though, expect the help and great customer service you need. They will take the time to help you and show you what you really need and great alternatives as well. The store is also VERY WELCOMING. Everyone greets you with "Hey whats up man" or "how you doing today" which I find cool. I also noticed how rude customers are to these guys when the customers barely know what they're talking about. These guys have some gnarly equipment and I always find what I need here. Only problem is their staff is usually really rude. Every time I come here, I deal with someone different, yet they always seem to think they know what I need better than I do. They snap at me, they make me feel like I haven't got a clue about guitars [I've been playing for over 8 years], and whenever I ask them a question or ask them to get something for me, they disappear for over 20 minutes. Once, I followed the guy to the department he walked off to, just to find him chatting and laughing with another staff member about something going on in their personal life-totally irrelevant to what I needed from them. I asked what was going on and he replied, "Oh yeah, let me get that for you." As if he totally forgot that I needed his assistance. I love this Guitar Center! Actually... I just love Guitar Center period! I like coming here to check out the new "toys" (rightfully called toys too because I'm like a kid at a candy store here) playing with the new gadgets. I try to only stay for about half and hour and take off but I can't. I end up messing around with the DJ gear and I get engulfed in the moment. The staff is really friendly and nice and they'll do what it takes to hook you up as much as they can. They also price match with online prices (except amazon and eBay) so you can just look something up on your phone to see if they got the best price... if that's not convincing enough, they also have a computer where you can look up your item online and they'll beat that price... after taxes (and some places don't tax if you live in California) read more

I've been to a few guitar centers and I'm generally in favor of them. The people usually aren't the most qualified but you can play with instruments without them giving you much grief. However I've had nothing but bad experiences with this guitar center. I went in a few days ago to buy a usb mic to use for podcasting. The guy who helped me acted like he knew what he was talking about, but it really didn't seem like he did. As soon as I told him I wanted to spend under $100 his attitude changed and he seemed very apathetic. He kept trying to up sell me on a mic (that granted I would have liked but I kept telling him that I couldn't afford). I walked out with one mic that we opened up in the car and it was damaged and had clearly been used before (I should also comment that it's against CA law to sell a mic like this). We promptly exchanged it, but all he had was a floor model which we took for the moment. I eventually took it back and got one that looks to be new, but the whole ordeal has left a very bad taste in my mouth. read more

It's hard not to like Guitar Center. I came with my uncle who is an avid player with his Beatles Cover Band. Great, friendly and knowledgeable staff that will even throw in some extra freebies when you make a big purchase. I think you can find some cheaper prices on line but to actually get to hear the sound of your guitar before you purchase is an awesome thing that you just can't do online. read more

Standard GC - but in LA, you'd think more folks working there would have a clue. Many do not. I'm a bassist, so this store is a particular bummer; Terrible selection of basses - mostly cheap off-shore stuff with a few decent EBMMs sprinkled in. Sill GC stuff like a bass on the wall labled "1964 Fender Jazz Bass!!" which is clearly a new re-issue. I will say that I have bough some decent used pieces there - but new gear? Nope. Heck, the effects/pedal displays rarely work right so its hard test drive. Amazing that they stay in business with this arrangement. read more

They're alright. I bought my bass from these guys. Accessories too. I always got great deals, yes, there is room to negotiate--don't let them tell you other wise. They can be a little pushy. For example, I asked to see a particular bass guitar that was being tested/used by someone else. The sales person said he'd go in the back and get one out. I told him not go to all that trouble, I don't want to buy, I just want to test it out. He said no worries, if you don't want it then you don't want it. He came back 30 seconds later and opened the box that it was packed in and let me jam on it for a little while. Bare with me.... When I was done, I gave it back to him and thanked him. Here's where it got kind of annoying. He asked what it would take for me to buy the guitar. I told him that I had already TOLD HIM I wasn't going to buy it. Then he started to give me prices. Shit, in retrospect, I could have gotten a great deal but I wasn't feeling a new bass at that moment. It irks me when I say no--then they go in with tactics. Most of the cats working the floor are actual musicians but I think they get paid shit, so that's why they might have an attitude--I've never gotten it, so I can't complain. Guitar Center is the big name box store for music needs. With that in mind you know what you are getting into when you go. We came here to sell my old electric guitar and amp. Right off the bat I was unimpressed by their service. No one came up and asked us what we needed help with. We had to find some people who were in the middle of talking about something. When we asked them who could help us they looked annoyed that we had interrupted. After finally getting some help it took about 15 minutes for them to price out my guitar and amp and come back with an offer. The offer was terrible. Now to their credit he explained why the offer was so bad. They do have to make some money off the eventual sale of the stuff. I took my stuff and walked off. In the end I donated my electric guitar and amp to a service that provides instruments to kids in need. The big difference with them was how excited the guy was to be picking up my stuff. So if you are looking to get rid of an old instrument I would say donate it to a school or a program. You can write it off on your taxes. 31/100 read more

The service here is pretty horrible. We walked in to buy a guitar and not a single employee came up to help us after us standing around for about 30 minutes. I had to walk up to somebody and ask them to help out which they did after another 10 minutes. Perhaps they are understaffed. read more

First of all, it has a big parking space, and being in Colorado Blvd., that's a big deal. Inside, it's very organized. There's a section for basses, electric guitars, percussions, live sound, acoustic guitars/basses (they're together), and racks of small items (e.g. picks, strings, straps). They don't have every item you can see on a website, but you can buy online and have it delivered to the store, and shipping would be free. The staff are friendly, and are very patient about newbie questions. More often than not, they know exactly what you mean, even if you don't know how to say it properly. They also work with you, giving you tips on how to save money on items, advising you to wait for upcoming sale if you can, and how to make the most of the pro coverage they offer. They won't try to rip you off, because the unnecessary money you would have spent won't go to their pockets, anyway. It's a nice store to hang out in. The guitars hanging on the wall may be plugged into any amp on display. Drums may be beaten, keyboards may be pressed. People won't judge you (not publicly, anyway), and it's a nice environment for musicians of any skill and type of music. read more

In December, I took an old Epiphone acoustic guitar to have refurbished for my husband's retirement this month to the store in Rancho Cucamonga. JD who handles the repair work there was so helpful. He took this old guitar and turned it into a beautifully sounding instrument in less than 2 days. The strings were non functional, the frets were worn down and the bridge was broken. When I picked it up I was amazed at the beautiful job he had done in such a short time. He truly was very professional, knows his guitars and I appreciate the work he did. When my husband saw it, he was amazed and deeply touched since the guitar was his brother's and has so much sentimental value to it...and now for many years to come! read more

And I have. I've purchased from this place before. They buy basic guitars and for a beginner these are fine. Now I've become aware that the pros go elsewhere. The team here is knowledgeable. They are musicians and can play great licks on any of the lower-quality merchandise they have. Bought a Taylor that was expensive here; good sound, poor playability. Saw online that Taylor makes higher quality, but you can't find those at Guitar Center. Took the guitar back. It was just a weird experience all the way around and I won't be going back now that I understand how much better the alternative is. GO THE ALTERNATE ROUTE IF YOU NEED A GOOD (EVEN INEXPENSIVE) GUITAR. For all the other stuff they sell, Guitar Center is a decent repository of electronic accompanying paraphernalia. read more

I came here on President's Day to get an acoustic guitar for myself, a beginner guitarist. I knew little of what I wanted and only had a feel of what I wanted from talking to my friends, but Mike was such a huge help. I don't think I could have found the guitar that was perfect for me without him. Best of all, the sales staff isn't pushy at all! Especially with a novice like me, I thought I would get pressured to buy anything and everything, but that wasn't the case at all. I ended up buying a Yamaha FG700S that was on sale for $170, and when I inquired about the Yamaha starter set, Mike not only gave me his honest opinion, but told me the pros and cons of each - objectively. I came to my own conclusion that getting the better guitar without all the added starter accessories for a slightly higher price was the better investment. And after I was leading toward the Yamaha, Mike showed me comps and didn't even pressure me to buy the more expensive ones that were out of my price range. He was knowledgeable about all the guitars - I can judge a little bit here since I did do some guitar buying research beforehand. After looking at all the different guitars in my price range, Mike left me alone in the room to play around with the Yamaha before I made my final final decision. I played around with it for a good 10 minutes, but let me tell you, that guitar had me at the first strum. Accessories: I got a gig bag for it. I was thinking about getting a hard case, but was told that it wasn't really worth it unless I planned on traveling with my guitar on planes a lot. See - objective advice! Mike also helped me tune my guitar for me and he even told me how I could hold off on buying a tuner because I could download an iphone guitar tuner app! He didn't even get pushed into buying picks since he gave me like 5 guitar center free ones :). At the end of the day, I thought I would have spent a lot more for things that I could have gotten away with. Now, I have the bare basics and have the luxury and option to add on things at my leisure - the best feeling ever. I have one quibble though. That when I was looking at guitars on my own, no one approached me to ask me if I needed help (which I did). I had to go up to the check-out area and ask someone for help. I mean, I can understand it though - with a place like guitar center where more than half of the people in there are just there to play around with instruments and not really buy, it sucks to go up to people that aren't really there to make purchases. So, I'll give them a break here. Tip: Get the repair plan for your guitar. It's worth it! It'll cover your guitar even if you accidentally ram it into a door or something, and not just repair it, but most likely REPLACE it. Yeah, that's right. It's kinda amazing and it's only about 15% of the price of what you pay for the guitar, so it's worth it. Trust me, I'm a soon-to-be-lawyer ;). read more

Unlike some of the other people, I had a wonderful experience here. I want to learn to play a guitar, but walking into the store that's all I knew. The guy who helped me, was nice and helpful, asking questions to help know what I was likely to want. He was quite knowledgable about the guitars, makers, and even knew what type of guitars certain famous players preferred and owned. It was the first time I went looking for a guitar and I fell in love with a red and black fender stratocaster but didn't buy it. The guy even printed out a list of items and accessories I was going to need with their average prices. I found the experience quite helpful, informative, and the atmosphere was wonderful. People could test out the guitars on hooked up amps and everything. Overall I was very happy with the experience and plan on going back to get the guitar. read more

This is not an attempt to disparage the Guitar Center. It is simply an account of my experience with their repair department. A Córdoba GK Studio guitar that was gifted to me and purchased with Humicase (for lifetime warranty) had a small bow in the neck and was buzzing and unplayable above the fifth fret. As advised by Daniel Rivera at Cordoba Guitars, I brought my never played/mint condition guitar in to the Pasadena store's Repair Department on December 6th 2015. The repair department was not in the store and I was assisted by one of their regular personnel who examined the guitar and told me that the bow in the neck was "totally normal." Upon hearing this, I had reservations about leaving my guitar, but I had no choice. He took my information and I left the store without any documentation whatsoever. I called back a week later (December 12) and the staff informed me that they were shipping the guitar back to Cordoba. I called again on the afternoon of January 8th (about one month later), to check on the status of the guitar....... And I was told that the guitar had not yet been shipped to Cordoba. Naturally, I became somewhat perturbed. My guitar eventually shipped to Córdoba about a week later. I emailed Scott Smith, the manager at Guitar Center about my discontent and never received a reply, so I phoned him. I got through on the second attempt (the first attempt resulting in a 45 minute wait) and he told me that the delay was due to Córdoba being on vacation for two weeks. I verified this with Daniel Rivera at Córdoba and he said that they were out of the office from Dec 24th - Jan 3rd. Anyhow, my guitar eventually arrived back at the Pasadena Guitar Center around February 10th. Upon examination, there were several new scratches and small dings in the soundboard of unknown origin (either Córdoba or Guitar Center). I have been a loyal guitar center customer since the 1980s and must say that I'm extremely discontented with this experience. I'm hoping that this helps offer some insight to anyone who contemplates bringing their guitar to the Pasadena Guitar Center for repair. read more

I went today to attend a workshop on a Roland Synth and learned a lot about the gear from the rep. Even got a discount off the gear and a bag. The rep was funny had some Easter egg short cuts and the staff was helpful. Also was nice to get some inside info on rumors about the synth vs what I was said on Roland user group forums. I'm a big fan of Roland. Also the synth sold out quickly which tells you how effective these workshops can be. There was a life experience here as well. An older gentleman bought the synth and planned to have a blast. He's got cancer and yet he celebrates life and is very happy to have had what he has and here I am complaining about trivial nonsense in my life. I purchased a used item online from GC's Pasadena store on a Saturday. I paid for it and everything. I know fulfilling orders on the weekends can be delayed, but as I PAID for it and it was showing to be "In Process," I figured all was well. That is, however, when I called the following Monday morning to see if I could get an idea when it might be ready. Well, it turns out the item (a used Epiphone guitar) was SOLD in the store on Sunday -- right from under me! When I spoke to the operations rep in Pasadena he apologized and said they will be refunding my money -- but his answer to my question as to how, if something is bought online, that fact doesn't show up so the sale people can take it off the wall was merely "it's a glitch in our system." That is patently absurd and frankly unacceptable. Customers have to suffer because they have a crummy computer system -- isn't that wonderful. They didn't even have the common courtesy to inform me of the situation -- I had to call GC's Customer Service AND the Pasadena store to find out. I searched for this item for weeks -- new ones are still backordered -- and was quite elated when I saw this nice used one for sale at a good price. Maybe too good? Was it not even in the store? Perhaps it was a ruse to get customers to buy an item even if though doesn't exist? To hell with Guitar Center. I WILL NOT BUY EVEN PICKS FROM GC EVER AGAIN. A sham operation. read more

The staff here are very friendly and helpful. Me and my husband came in looking for a drum for our son. We weren't very sure what we wanted. But wow these guys are super helpful. They could have just pointed to the Lil corner of bongo and conga drums and said that's all we have, but nope not these guys . They got a ladder and started pulling stuff down from a storage area behind the register. We found something we liked and walked out extremely happy. We will definitely be back mostly because of the service and partly because this place is alot of fun. I feel bad that I didn't get a name of the three guys that helped us. But I do know one was new and still learning he was in the drum area and the other was his manager I believe kinda Asian looking guy maybe philipino. But anyway thanks you guys a bunch! read more

I'm revising some reviews to make them a bit more streamline and this is one of them. I like this Guitar center. I like the Hollywood store too but this is closer and more convenient. The staff is very friendly and glad to help. I have purchased a couple of ukulele's from this location and a bunch of other items. Actually I bought a 1962 Kay Swingmaster hollow body about 7 years ago or so. The go to guy at this location is Patrick. I only seemed to be aware of him about a year ago but for some reason I think he said he has been here a number of years yet I never noticed until a year ago. He's a good guy and very helpful. I usually go to him when buying here. I recently saw a guitar stand at the GC website I wanted. I thought I could buy it at the store so I went to get it. I learned it was available online only. Stephanie helped me out this time. she filled out the info on the webpage as I gave her my info. She was and always has been helpful and friendly. So it was ordered and shipped to store for pickup. ould have had it sent to home but being sent to store I was able to go and check out more gear. I go here a lot to browse but I'm not a "looky loo. I go for entertainment, true, but I do see things I want now and them and buy. So for all the times I go I don't buy a lot percentage wise but in the past 10 years I have actually purchased a lot. I just wait 'till I see something I like and I pull the trigger and buy. In other words it's just a matter of time then something I like is there and I buy it. I've been to Guitar Centers all across the US and this is one of my favorites for a couple simple reasons: 1. The staff let's you settle in, get comfortable, and try out the equipment. No hard sell. 2. The staff is knowledgable. 3. Perhaps it is because it is in Pasadena and not Hollywood or San Francisco, but I have never heard someone at this location cranking the distortion up and attempting to play Metallica or Smoke on the Water. Ahhhhhhh! 4. Parking is super easy with a huge parking lot in the back. 5. There is usually a good selection of used gear to compliment a wide selection of new gear. read more
