Chips and salsa

The inside of the restaurant looked nice, it's not a big place so don't expect it to be a lot of big seating areas with more space as that is not the case. I wasn't a huge fan of the empanada & taco. My husband wasn't a huge fan of his meal either. It tasted fine but it tasted like some flavor was missing. This was not the taste of Hispanic style cooking I was getting, it felt like they lowered the quality a bit which I don't know why because the restaurant was filled with Hispanic & afro Latina people. The staff was nice, the owner was nice as well which is why the 4 star rating but the food was a miss with me. Maybe it was because of what I got.

The best thing here is the mofongo. I did not realize it until I moved to NYC and tried mofongo at many other restaurants. My mind kept coming back to Guadalupana where it is covered in garlic oil and packed full of crispy pork bits. The location and exterior of the building can be a little intimidating, especially when the metal door slams behind you. Once you are inside that all goes away, because you are greeted by smiling faces and a welcoming feeling. There is table seating, an open kitchen (diner style) behind a counter with seating, and a TV on each end of the room. They play the latest Spanish language music videos. I would have never come here if Steve M. did not recommend it. I recommend walking to the back cooler to check out the beers and the sodas available. The beer runs about $3.00 per bottle, and most of the sodas are $2.00 each (expensive). We ordered a Negro Modelo and a Tamarind flavor Jarritos soda. The basket of chips is free and fresh fried. The flavor and texture of the chips is amazing because they are crispy in some parts and soft in others. Dip lightly in the homemade read chili sauce. The Chicken Empanada ($1.50) was very small, without much filling, and was dry. I recommend going to Café Havana for a plump chicken empanada. However, the highlight of the experience at Guadalupana was the appetizer Morongo ($4.00), which is a Dominican dish of mashed plantains served like a soufflé that is stuffed with crispy pork cracklings, then drizzled with pungent chopped garlic in oil. It is to die for with a little of their homemade hot chili sauce. We created our own version of a taco sampler; 1 beef taco ($1.50), 1 chicken taco ($1.50), and 1 chorizo taco ($1.50). The tacos were very small and the cilantro, onion, and lime we served on the side. All were very dry except for the chorizo, which was then the best tasting. I do not recommend the tacos, because that is not their specialty. After we ordered, and saw the food going to other tables, we realized that the seafood is the commonly ordered item, served with rice and vegetables. However, I was very pleased with my Torta de Milanese (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milanesa) ($6.00) a huge crispy buttery bread stuffed with country fried style steak. Then, topped with lettuce, tomato, avocado, black bean spread, and mayonaise. Served with a large portion of fries and pickled sliced jalapenos. Put some spicy sauce on top.....ahhhh. Skip the tacos, order some seafood, or a sandwich. Don't forget the Mofongo. After eating here, I realized that most of the food here is not Mexican, but Dominican. Next time, I want to get the chorizo and egg sandwich. I did not see any credit card signs anywhere, so I paid in cash assuming that it is cash only from what I saw from other patrons. $21.00 even without tip

What an amazing find!! The food, atmosphere, service was phenomenal-- I felt i was transported to the Caribbean! Great experience! You can tell the food is super authentic! And get the Michelada's!

Mofongo a la diabla (no hot sauce for me).

Once again I had another mofongo, but this one a la criolla, or "a la diabla" without hotsauce... absolutely yummy! My husband had the garlic shrimp one, he couldn't believe there was a spot in town with a good mofongo. Another thing I noticed, they don't add much salt... it doesn't bother me, as I prefer to add as I wish. Below is my first review posted a month ago (just on the wrong restaurant... oops!). I've been craving a mofongo for quite some time, but there are no good places in the area that sell them. Who would've thought it would be here? a mofongo with garlic shrimp sauce (not on the menu), it was really good! Real pork chunks too!

Everything was delicious here... even the simplest foods were made special with the amazing flavors they create... masterful cooking and generous portions. Amazing staff and great prices. A true gem.

Best mofongo ever.

Everything here is perfect. Run, don't walk. Tip heavy. This place is blue-collar perfection.

The BEST fish sandwich I've ever had. The second time I had shrimp encheleda's, which were awesome as well.

Food is great but the service is horrible. The "waitresses" never smile and walk right by you when you try to get their attention.

Absolutely delicious and authentic meal! Just what we were looking for when showing our nephew…read morearound the area. We enjoyed queso, guacamole, tacos, enchiladas, chicken mole, and other such dishes. All were so good and almost no leftovers! Our server was attentive and friendly, our glasses were full the whole meal and the food was hot/fresh. And you can't beat the decor and atmosphere - very lively and great for any occasion! Highly recommend giving a try!

Waited for a table about 20 min- which gave us enough time to get some margaritas. We could sit at the bar- or outside...but we snagged two chairs at the bar. Attendee was friendly and made nice drinks. Food was delish. Chips and salsa were freely given- menu says free with all meals. (Someone posted a complaint about being charged)... Anyhow- we enjoyed our meal. Busy place , but food came quickly and we loved our meals. I had the carne asada- waiter said the steak fajitas is a lot of food and I didn't need too much... I ordered it medium rare... and I would say it came medium well- a "little"pink... but more done than expected...it was still good.. I guess I would order it rare. rice and beans were tasty and also came with pico and tortillas. Chili Rellanos with beef had at least two or theee peppers... and stuffed full of beef- had to take half home. The combo plate also was fab. Tamal, tostado and taquito- yum... had to take some home of this too. Happy to have tried this establishment- and will be back.

They were extremely busy of course because of the day and I waited a bit longer for the order than what I would imagine is normal. I wasn't upset in the least because they were playing live music in the parking lot , had a portable bar out front and a very cool silent auction to pass the time. We ordered steak fajitas, a veggie quesadilla and chips and salsa. There were no complaints at all. The food was fresh and hot. The chips are those classic Mexican restaurant style and the salsa was classic and delicious. The portions sizes were very strong for the prices paid. This place is going to our go-to spot for Mexican from now on. They also serve Todd's sauce. It is a must try. I liked it on chips and the quesadilla.
