It is almost impossible to miss. There is a gigantic power plant stack nearby. So yes, the name checks out. For me, this is less of a "destination coffee shop" and more of a very good Highway 1 reset station. Coffee, pastries and some light food, plenty of parking, clean space, nice people. Sit down for a while, let the Monterey traffic do whatever it wants to do, then continue the trip. They use ACME Coffee Roasting beans, and I usually buy a bag of the PowerPlant Blend to take home. Nothing unnecessarily complicated - just a very solid everyday coffee at a reasonable price. The part I enjoy most is the atmosphere. On weekends you may catch live music, and I've spent quite a few stops here drinking coffee, listening to the band and doing absolutely nothing productive. That is actually the correct operating procedure. The salted vanilla cold brew was refreshing and delicious. It was my first time learning what olalliebeery is (a type of blackberry) and eating a "crimp": essentially a linzer cookie in muffin form. The crimp was perfectly baked, with nicely browned edges and fluffy interior; the dollop of olalliberry jam added both a bit of sweetness and tartness. The mushroom sando was so good, and I would definitely order it again. Everything from the bun (fluffy, buttery, well-baked) to the heaping pile of roasted, saucy mushrooms (so savory and generous), down to the luscious scrambled egg at the bottom was an A+ experience. No notes.

And somewhere along the way, Phil's has become part of the tradition. The first few times we came down, we were on a mission to find the best cioppino. We tried multiple places that all made their own claims to the title, but after our very unofficial family taste test, Phil's was the clear winner. Their cioppino is what keeps us coming back -- rich, comforting, loaded with seafood, and exactly what I want after a day on the coast. We also tried the sea bass fish and chips, which were excellent. The fish was buttery and flaky inside with a nice crisp exterior, and the portion was generous with four good-sized pieces of fish. At this point, a Monterey Aquarium trip almost feels incomplete without a stop at Phil's. We may come down for the fish at the aquarium, but we stay for the fish at Phil's.

The cioppino is totally overrated, the clam chowder had zero clams in it. The entrees come with a side salad and garlic bread and are hefty portions. The seafood pastas are what are solid here. I made triple decker clubs and fresh tomato and mozzarella sandwiches, normally I am a "toasted" bread gal, but this was great untested for many iterations too! The slices are huge, so sliced them half for regular sized sandwiches.

However I'm reducing them to one star. The reason, THEY ARE ALWAYS CLOSED!!!! No matter when I go there, what day I go there, what time I go there. It is no use having great donuts if you're not there to sell them. Sorry guys I'm out.
