A Must-go for a traditional hayride into the fields, cut your own tree, get hot cocoa family…read moretradition! My family has been going here for years! If you want to take a hay ride into the fields you must go on the weekends. You pre-pay and select what type of tree you wish to get (Canaan's are great) then grab a provided saw, or bring your own and get on the hayride to the field. You can also take your dog(s) if you want! After you're done and get on another ride back to the barns, once there they put your tree on a shaker and wrap it in twine for transport home. Afterwards you can partake in shopping at the gift shop, buy fresh made kettle corn, or grab a drink and snack at the concession shop. This place get's very busy, but the wait times are never too long. If you prefer you can always purchase a pre-cut tree or a plantable Christmas tree, too!

Many of you old timer Pittsburghers will know this place as Dambach's Nursery. I have such fond memories of heading out early on crisp November mornings with my Dad and his trusty ancient hand saw to drive to, then very rural, Fombell, PA, which is a few clicks from fabulous downtown Zelienople. Some years we had to don our snow boots and others a light jacket. Plenty of parking (it's a farm so it's muddy - wear your muckaluks) and many folks bring their well behaved dogs. They can cart your whole tribe out to the "cut your own" trees on a hay wagon or they have delightful fresh precut trees to select from ranging in sizes from 6-11'. Make sure to bring a tape measure if you want to cut your own because all trees look a lot smaller than they really are out in the big wide open fields. You only make THAT mistake once (we had to trim almost 6" off one year). It makes for a great day and lovely memories. Check them out!

When I come out here, I think of Linus and his search for the most "sincere" pumpkin patch. Except…read morethat I'm always here for a Christmas tree instead. And yes, this urban cowboy really loves finding and cutting down his own tree in a small forest off a country road in Butler county. Heck, I'd drive out here just for the smell. God bless us, every one! Two things I really like: 1. It's no-nonsense. No hay wagons or sleigh rides, no Santas or Chipmunks music. You drive in, walk through their beautiful little forest, pick one out, cut it down, and drag it out. They bale it for you and you're on your way. 2. It's low-key, and the trees are never too picked over. We always pick up the tree late in the season, so it's important not to be left only with scraggly and weird-shaped trees. (We put candles on the tree instead of electric lights -- an old German tradition -- so it's important to wait until close to Christmas before picking it up.) In short, we're glad this place isn't more popular, and the tree we come away with is always gorgeous. We get Colorado Spruce, but they also have Scotch Pine, Douglas Fir, Blue Spruce, Concolor Fir. An 8-foot tree runs about $20. The dudes who run the place are a surly, cheerless bunch, probably understandable since they have to stand out in the elements all day and deal with city folk like me. Little do they realize that their surliness only seems to add to the sincerity of the place for me. I ask you, Linus, would the place be as sincere if they put on Santa hats and had faux Christmas cheer? Great trees, good folk. (The tree farm is "family owned and operated for over 50 years".) I highly recommend it.

Not clear that they are still in business. Went down yesterday, much of the place has been turned…read moreover to oil and gas drilling. The hillside has been cleared and flattened. No evidence of preparation for tree sales next week.
