Grumpy's is a large bait and tackle shop, conveniently located in Seaside. It's a couple blocks from the boardwalk so it's not chaotic and you can even find plenty of parking spots because they're all 30 min and 1 hour parking in the vicinity. The staff were very friendly and cashier was happy. They directed me to the frozen baits that I wanted. They have a nice assortment of frozen bunker, spearing, squid and others. Plenty of tackle here too, rods, a really nice shop. Checking out was smooth, they take credit card (no fee, though maybe a $10 minimum). I highly recommend this shop! read more

Stopped in on our way to fish this area for our first time. The guy working behind the counter was really helpful in telling some areas to check out . Great selection of gear, tackle, hardware & clothing . Great selection of everything. My only beef was after dropping over two hundred & fifty bucks on gear and sweatshirts with their logo they charged me for a bumper sticker that advertised their place . Knowledgeable and friendly staff who are willing to explain all of your surf fishing needs. My son and I went in and had never surf fished before...they patiently walked us through all of the bait, hooks, rigs we'd need and didn't try to sell us anything unnecessary. Despite its ironic name, Grumpy's is the go-to bait and tackle shop from Island Beach State Park to Point Pleasant. Open from 4:30 am until 10 pm most of the year, Grumpy's staff will share how and where to catch fish in real time and will sell you the bait and tackle to do so. Having said that, don't expect free advice. The best bait shop employees don't open their mouths until you open their cash register. I stopped in to try to get some information on fishing the surf, as this area was new to me. I got the info, but paid dearly for it. I had to endure personal insults, rude comments, derogatory statements and bad jokes. If that was not enough I had to endure a 10 minuet dissertation on pyramid sinkers, which was bad enough but the analogy was so bad, comparing the sinker to a woman's high heel as to be laughable. The pyramid does not sit on it's point, it lays on it's side. A very strange business model indeed. Grumpy will talk down to you, as if you are a lesser being. Maybe he believes he is being funny, it was not. Too bad because it was my first trip to the NJ shore, I grew up fishing on the beaches of LI, and other then grumpy, most all of the people were very pleasant. His store is well stocked, but I would think you could get what you need without the needless drama. Most fisherman, who share a love of the water and the outdoors, sunrises and light wind, long days and high tides, treat they brethren better then this. read more

AWESOME BAIT & TACKLE SHOP! Grumpys has a massive selection of tackle with an emphasis on local surf fishing. They stock everything a surfcaster could need. The staff is super helpful and knowledgeable... a great crew of enthusiastic people who fish hard. They spend time with customers to find the right equipment at within the right budget. Grumpy is an interesting character. Yeah, he can be a bit salty, but it is all in good fun. I just had a custom rod build by Blackcloud Bob, and it is as quality a build as i have ever seen. I have had reels repaired by them, and they do a great job at fixing what I break. They always stock the baits that are producing fish. This is one of NJ's great bait and tackle shops. read more

This is a great shop. Very knowledgeable staff and fair prices. Only one bad experience here though. I came out from purchasing a few items in the store and caught the reel repair man, frankie z, in my car stealing my bagged sandwhich. I mean I f I knew he was that hungry I would've gave him one. Grumpy is not always grumpy ! I needed to expand my surf fishing equipment this fall so I decided to visit Grumpy's for some advice. After about a 5 minute question and answer period of what I was looking for and wanted in rod and reel performance, Grumpy "hisself" produced 4 surf rods of different actions and prices. After discussing each and selecting one, we moved on to reels. Here is where the old man really knows his stuff. Set 6 reals on the counter matching the rod I had chosen. We went through each reel, highlighting the features, advantages and of course the bang for the buck. After the reel selection was completed, we combined the two for an evaluation of balance and cast action. I've had the new combo for a few weeks now and could not be happier with my purchase. It is exactly what i was looking for. True, Grumpy is a character but I found him to be the right guy to understand what I wanted in a rod and reel and equip me with exactly what I was looking for.
