Everything was made with love, juicy, rich, very flavorful and really delicious. The meats didn't even need any sauce, but a little homemade sauce here is great to dip some bites in. The brisket was smoky, very well-seasoned, tender and still had some fat for that extra taste. It wasn't excessively fatty like the moist side, just right. The secret, aromatic spice rub on it really makes it very unique compared to anywhere else. Most pricier bbq places have an overall simple, salt n pepper vibe which is great. However, it's really nice to have something different n exciting to where you can't tell what the seasoning is. The hot link had a very savory, super rich, mildly spicy flavor to it. The skin was very good and the inside was crumbly like ground meat in a way. You can tell it's homemade and js, it's extremely greasy when cutting it open. Each link had that crunch to it when biting and a rope piece on each end. The collard greens were juicy, refreshing, earthy, tangy and a little smoky. Very comforting and contrasting side dish. The cake special this time was chocolate and it was also very tasty, rich, moist and had a dense frosting with a soft flour ratio. The peach cobbler looked great too and will try that eventually if it's there next time. The service was very welcoming, friendly and efficient. This is one of my favorite bbq places in TX.

Straight off the Road has always had good vibes, and nothing there has changed. Country music when you come in the door, good service, and authentic feeling decorations. It just feels like home in here-- Texas without all the pretentiousness of fancier places. I was surprised to see the parking lot and the restaurant only half full on Mother's Day, but looking back, I should have known then that something wasn't quite right. Everything went well until I got my plate. I ordered the two meat brisket and sausage, potato salad, and fried okra. The portion was huge-- enough for three people -- but I couldn't enjoy it. The brisket should have been the star, but it tasted like was baked too long in an oven an oven a day or two ago. There was no smoke flavor, and the meat just fell apart. I could have eaten it with a spoon. It was tender, sure, but anybody can do that if you cook it/rest it long enough. The flavor just wasn't there. I'm not sure whether they make their sausage or get it from somewhere outside, but it seemed to be quality stuff before they cooked it. It was coarse ground like I like it with good seasoning. But where was the smoke? The sausage honestly looked and tasted like it was sliced and boiled. I was shocked. The potato salad tasted good, but the texture was all wrong. Everything was chopped up small like it was done in the food processor and there was no love in it. Fried okra is hard to get wrong, but there was nothing particularly right about it either. I was so suspicious about the lack of flavor in my meat that I drove around the back parking lot when we left. There were several racks of neatly stacked firewood, but it was all filled up to the top. Either it had just been delivered, or it's not getting used. I suspect the latter. This is Texas. If you're gonna keep the doors open at a barbecue joint, you have to do better. I love coming to your restaurant, and I hope you get things figured out.
