Yum! My husband and I came here for dinner tonight as our first stop in London. After spending all…read moreday traveling, we were thrilled with the drink selection. The Merlot was delicious! We ordered onion rings to start, the breading on them was amazing! It was light and crispy as opposed to being heavy and greasy like a lot of onion rings. I also loved the curry ketchup that came with them. I'm not generally a curry fan, but it definitely worked with this dish. My husband got fish and chips. The fish was perfectly fried and the tarter sauce was obviously house made because it tasted very fresh and lemony. The chips were fine, but unremarkable in my opinion. For my meal, I ordered pumpkin walnut gnocchi. It was delicious! Just enough pumpkin without being overpowering. There was quite a bit of kale (I think it was kale, the menu didn't say) that came with the dish. It was very good, but probably could have been dialed back a little. The service was friendly and prompt. Definitely a great way to start our London vacation!

The Old Ship - Not one, but two mirror balls :)

The Old Ship There…read moreis a poem by James Elroy Flecker that I find appropriate in summarizing my feeling of this hidden Old Ship which sails on the corner of York Square Gardens north of the Limehouse DLR station: It was so old a ship - who knows, who knows? - And yet so beautiful, I watched in vain To see the mast burst open with a rose, And the whole deck put on its leaves again. I have to admit that my discovery of this ship was a result of my utter selfishness. As a Limehousian, there are opportunities to have the name Dennis M. go down in history as the first reviewer and upon my search of Yelp-virgins, I came across The Old Ship. As I approached the ship shrouded in a lamp-lit hazy mist, I was not able to imagine what treasures or horrors lay within. Quietly making an entrance I saw a bounty of brightly lit booze, the ships white fluffy dog, local patrons sipping on golden pints and... and...?? TWO DISCO BALLS?!! Oh yeah, you heard me. A duo set of glimmering shining sparkling spinning spheres twirling frivolously over the small wooden Shakespearean stage! ... stage?! After a couple more visits to my new favourite local ship, I can tell you that TOS is a local pub, pool hall, beer garden and on the weekend drag-show complete with not one, but two spinning mirror balls. I LOVE this place because of the complete randomness, super cold and crisp Thatchers (not for me but for my lady friends...don't judge...), disco-esque 70s-80s music, the cute white dog running around, the old lacy wallpaper, the stage... All I can say is that I'm proud to be a Limehousian because of places like TOS where I can sit down after a long day of looting and pirating and have a nice beer. Oh... and the prices... let me just tell you if you enjoy simple cocktails, they are basically free compared to the other prices you'll find in London. And with that, this pirate approves and gives this place a solid 4 STAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRS MATEY!

My friend and I were looking for somewhere to have a pre-gig drink and meal at around 17:30 hrs (12.12.2020). We had phoned in advance to see if we needed to book a table and were told we could just turn up. When we arrived, we found a table near the empty DJ Booth. My friend went to the bar to order and after waiting for a while, was told abruptly, and my friend tells me, rudely, by a barmaid handwashing glasses that she would come to our table. While we waited for her to arrive, we checked the menu, which was pretty basic: Baked potato with a couple of topping choices; something that looked like a veg pie and one other item none of which looked in any way appetising, or filling! We waited for what seemed like 10 minutes and when the barmaid hadn't come to our table, I went to the bar and asked her when she would be coming to take our order. Her response, "Oh, I forgot." Unsure of their lockdown procedure, I asked if she would be coming to our table to take our order or should I order from the bar. That's when the barmaid started getting messy, complaining that she was busy and said I was shouting at her. I wasn't. 2 other staff (?) started to get involved but wouldn't let me explain. Anyway, in the end, we were told we wouldn't be served, so we left. Luckily, we found a lovely place called The Craft Beer Company near Limehouse Station and had a lovely Thai meal and drinks and were waited on by a lovely waitress, who had created a very safe, distanced environment, with all the staff wearing masks/visors, hand gel everywhere, etc. There are lots of nice bars & restaurants in the area to choose from. Don't waste your time at The Old Ship unless you are looking for bad service.
