Bad customer service. My nephew and I entered the store to staffer were behind the counter talking and neither greeted us. As we shopped am additional staff walked by and said nothing. We observed them greet,help and say have a good good day to numerous others. One staff had to pass over me and did not even say excuse me. At one point I was interested in purchasing an auction figure from the case however no one seemed interested in the sale.This encounter was not welcoming. I just had knee surgery, so I decided to pick up the miniature painting hobby again. I can't drive, because, well, surgery. I had someone pick up a a paint, and they ended up getting a few more colors as a just-in-case. Lance offered to replace them if they were the only colors (they were a surprise!), as long as they weren't opened. We did end up replacing them with colors I needed, and he was kind enough to help the person figure out what was close enough to what I was looking for and helping them get what I needed. One of my fave comic shops. Whenever I'm in the area I make sure to stop by and grab a book. Dave, the owner, is always extremely helpful and friendly. The shop itself is quite large compared to most stores I've been to and there's plenty of room for gaming and comics alike. Big fan! read more

The store is actually quite attractive - - - well lit, not crowded, clean and organized. Simply put, gaming is on the left and comics are on the right. Left side had some beautiful gaming tables, a counter for buying whatnot, folding tables and chairs for card games, racks of board games, etc. Middle of the store has an attractive counter, a work area, and statues. Right side (most of it, at least) is devoted to comics, graphic novels, and supplies. Most of the right-hand wall is taken up with long boxes (three tiers high) of back issue books. And this is where the store, to me, really goes sideways, and why I likely won't return. There's a small note above the long boxes that says (paraphrasing) that due to eBay flippers, they won't sell you more than one copy of any back issue. Now, I don't have so much of an issue with that, as they're trying to keep their collection in such a shape that collectors might actually find things when they come in. But to make matters worse, their prices are WAY higher than what the marketplace will tolerate. Later AMAZING SPIDER-MAN annuals from the 90s and beyond? $10-$25. Issues of ROM that would typically be dollar bin fodder? $8 each, at least. And the pattern continues. I walked out with one back issue of WEB OF SPIDER-MAN, when I might have walked out with armloads if the prices were somewhat reasonable. Another reviewer said that this store had been around for over two decades; some of the bagged comics appear that they've been in those long boxes for a good part of that, and it's my guess that it's because of the prices. So if you're into gaming, this may be your place. It's quite attractive and looks like a place where you could spend some time. But if you're looking for comic back issues and you have a comic shop closer to you, just keep on driving. read more

Awesome place. Probably the best game store in Tyler. While I'm not a comic book guy, I do love my fair share of trading card games. The owners and staff were incredibly helpful and helped me get into playing in their store tournaments a few years ago. Their selection of gaming products is pretty decent -- nothing fancy, but the essentials. Lots of comics as well, so if you're into that, you'll probably not have a problem finding what you need. read more

Your one stop shop for all things geeky and nerdy. Ground Zero has been around for 21 years now, so that should tell you something in and of itself. It has been my go to place for comics and games for the entire time I've lived in east Texas. Not only do they stock the current comic titles and graphic novels, but they have a large, well organized, and comprehensive back issue selection. As a fan of the floppies, I have found it more difficult to find many stores with the type of back issue selection that they have. Most have a few boxes of late '80s and '90s stuff that everyone and their dog still have copies of (Youngblood #1, anyone?) There game selection is also top notch. If they don't have it, they can usually get it if you ask, which I have, on several occasions. They have a large number of tables set out to allow for gaming to occur in store, and a fine selection of carbonated beverages and sugary deliciousness to keep your blood sugar humming while attempting to destroy your competition. I find it surprising that one of the other reviews made it sound as though women were not welcomed at the store. in my experience, that doesn't seem accurate. As one of the regulars at the gaming tables, we're always pleased to have women join us. My wife has attended with me on many occasions and has never felt unwelcome. Trust me, I would have heard about it if she had, and I would have addressed it with the owners. So, in short, great shop, stop by if you get the chance. You won't regret it. read more

Great Shop. Very spacious and it is also clean and bright. It is well stocked with current and back issue comics and trade collections. They also have all kinds of gaming resources for sale. It has plenty of gaming area for you and your friends. They do magic tournaments a few weekends a month, as well as for the pre-release, release, and game day events. Pokemon and Hero Clix tournaments occur as well. They have regular pen and paper gaming at the store, too. read more

Ground Zero is a full-service comic shop with new issues, a good selection of back issues, supplies. and a huge wall of trade paperbacks. There's usually a wide selection of sale TPBs as well, and a lot of gaming supplies (although I'm not a gamer). It's a family-owned business, and a very warm and friendly place to shop. read more

I stopped by Ground Zero Comics while visiting friends in Tyler. The store is large and well lit, with lots and lots of comics and other fun stuff. The staff was super friendly and helpful -- definitely chat them up, as they know their stuff. I don't live local but will likely visit the area at least once a year and plan on going back when I do. I have been going to Ground Zero for a long time. Starting in my teen years. There are many things that have kept me coming to Ground Zero Comics over the years, but what sticks out the most is the way I have been treated over the years. Even from the first moment of me being a pesky teen they have always been welcoming. Taking the time to know me as a customer. Over the years this customer service has evolved as I got married and had children. This is a place I can bring my daughters and son and know that they are in a safe gaming environment that is nurturing the younger geek crowd. This is the premier place for my family to get out gaming and comics fix; along with a fantastic community of geeks that are second to none. You want comics I guarantee you will not find another with as large a selection in the East Texas area. They have comics and they know their comics. Countless times I have been advised on a comic to read, and not been disappointed. Again back to that whole; these folks take the time to get to know their customers. Looking for games Ground Zero has a huge selection of games; board-games, table-top,Magic the Gathering; minis (Gamesworkshop, Wizkids, Fantasyflight. If there is a mini they more than likely have it... and the best part; if they don't have the item you are looking for.. they will special order it for you!!! Nice modern shop...has current comics, trade paperbacks, and plenty of back issues too! He has a small selection of used novels too. I don't pay too much attention to the gaming or statue sections, but I would say that it's pretty well stocked like most comic/gaming shops you'll come across. The staff are nice and helpful. Of the several gaming/hobby/comic book stores located within Tyler, TX, -all of which I've shopped and taken multiple opportunities to engage staff and owners alike- 'Ground Zero Comics' is my most preferred by far for several practical reasons, as well as reasons that I feel make an establishment stand out above and beyond the competition. I've always enjoyed reading, playing video games, and collecting, but it wasn't until the past several months that I decided to take an interest in tabletop gaming and collectable card based games. If anyone remembers, or is currently experiencing what that's like, you know it's close to that feeling you get when starting a new job, or walking into a new classroom of a new school in a new town. A first purchase alone is a stab in the dark, even if you've done your best to research what lies ahead, and any help from sellers is information that is always greatly appreciated. Although it has been my experience that all of the local shops have given sound advice when it comes to purchasing product, I have found that the advice given from the staff at 'Ground Zero Comics' has been the most versed and open ended in my interests as a beginner. It's common practice in town for shops to host events, tournaments, pre-releases, and other special groups, but 'Ground Zero Comics' does all of this superbly, and in superior fashion, without a doubt. If it isn't for the open space atmosphere that accommodates large crowds with ease, it's the well organized structure of events posts made online, followed through by hand made in-store digital bulletins/events boards, and support by dedicated judges and leaders for such events. As a beginner, this combination of customer services reflects the kind of dedication I enjoy and appreciate, and has directly contributed to making my transition from being new, to being comfortable and confident. If you aren't a gamer, but love comics and collectibles, again, of all the stores I've visited in Tyler, 'Ground Zero Comics' excels. Their location provides a large amount of space that houses and displays product in a pristine and appealing manner. Everything is placed so that customers may shop with ease, whether they're coming in knowing exactly what they want, or just browsing. In the time I've spent there, I keep seeing new merchandise that impresses me, be it busts, figurines, special editions of graphic novels, comics, etc. Nowhere else in town, is there such evidence of meticulous organization of such a wide range in items. It really is quite impressive on the eyes, which also makes it a joy to shop. But when it comes down to the real nitty gritty for me, it's all about customer service. 'Ground Zero Comics' has me won as a loyal customer, hands down, without a single hesitation in thought. That isn't to say that I haven't been pleased in the other local shops in this regard, because I have been indeed. However, at GZC, I have been given a level of respect, and appreciation that I haven't felt anywhere else, all basic expected professional niceties aside. Each individual employee has made a continuous conscious effort to engage me in conversation at each encounter, and not even just to speak about product. They genuinely care about what I like, the things I enjoy about gaming, and are always happy to chat about anything at all. That means so much more to me than product knowledge, which they have down in spades, because I'm going to buy what I want, when I want, no matter what, after all. It means I get to feel great about contributing to a business that has a heart. My sister and I are some what new to comics, we attempted to start reading them back in Houston a few years ago, and then finally tried again here in Tyler when we moved. The second we walked into ground zero, which is only about 5 minutes away from our house, we knew we'd have a good place to buy our comics. After a week or 2 of outstanding service, smiles and friendly conversation, Dave and Michael invited us to join a graphic novel discussion group! They told us about the meeting times, what they were covering this week, and how to join the Facebook group and everything! It was wonderful! Also, they only knew we were interested into graphic novels by paying attention to our purchases every time we came in, this proves their attention to their costumers! Long story short, now we come to the discussion group every time, are making friends, and are learning so much about comic books, comic book artists, and other things having to do with the industry. I recommend going to this comic store if you are looking for a friendly, helpful, and non-judgmental community.
