Pros: what a great venue! The sound was perfect, we watched The Slackers and Mustard Plug and had the time of our lives. Drinks are moderately priced, there is plenty of street parking, and the decor rocks. There are limited bathroom stalls but the restrooms were VERY clean. There was toilet paper and soap all night long, I don't think I've ever been to a cleaner rock venue. So happy about that! I'm gonna start this out by saying that it absolutely kills me not to give this place 5 stars. It is an absolutely awesome venue, with great bartenders and cheap beer, and is a staple in the metal and punk communities. The reason that I am writing this is SOLELY because of a serious sanitation issue at the Oceano show that was not properly addressed. Some guy broke his nose in the mosh pit, which obviously can happen and is just part of the risk of going to metal shows, but he chose to be an idiot about it and bled all over every inch of the bathroom instead of using his shirt to stop it. All over the hallway, the bathroom floor, the toilet, the sinks, and the countertops. Every surface was completely coverd in pools of blood. To make matters worse, someone plugged up the toilet and people continuted to use it, resulting in a river of urine throughout the entire bathroom. This mixed with the blood, and created an extreme safety concern. One of the Grog Shop staff went in the barhroom and noticed this, but instead of cleaning it up, he just put an "Out of Order" sticker on the stall. The blood and urine was never cleaned up. Don't get me wrong, I get that most music clubs are all pretty run-down and filthy and it's to be expected, but this is absolutely unacceptable. Everyone knows that there are health department standards about bodily fluid clean-up, and the serious health risks that these fluids pose to patrons. I literally had to throw my shoes away when I got home and wash my feet, because the waste on the floor was so deep that it reached the canvas parts of my shoes. This is absolutely disgusting. Looking for a spot to catch a show and have some Grog? Well this Shop is it as who doesn't love a good old fashioned punk show on a weekday night! Coming here I wasn't all too sure what to expect but what I found was an awesome little venue that was just super fun the whole night away! This is a decent sized place with a good amount of floor space to mosh and chill on with the stage kinda in the corner basically everywhere is a decent view as long as your talk enough! Parking here was easy for me as I found a spot on the streets before the venue and it wasn't the only one so I know that is always a relief! Some of the shows here can sell out so if you know about it in advance then definitely take advantage of the presale if there is one! Overall it was a show it sounded good the people who worked at the venue were nice and it was a good time so with that it sure I'll be back here again at some point to see Leftover Crack or who knows who else either way I'll see you in the pit! read more

One of the best venues to see a band! This is a true Cleveland classic and it's amazing. Every concert you go to has a really intimate feeling. We had purchased tickets to see and hear a musical artist -- The Birthday Massacre, from Canada -- back before the pandemic had occurred. In the early days of the pandemic, I had called the venue to inquire about a refund and was told to keep my receipt in case the artist would reschedule. However, the artist has not returned to this venue and is not planning to do so during its current tour. Today, I called the venue today to request a refund and was told that the venue was well past the point of giving out refunds and that -- supposedly -- it had sent out an e-mail months ago. However, we had never received such a message, as we were advised to pay in person in the first place. Ultimately, this is the only business/venue that had screwed us out of money due to an unprecedented, global pandemic; shame on you, Grog Shop! We will never be attending a show at your establishment and will be advising all of our friends to steer clear from you, as well! read more

I went to the Grog Shop at the request of a friend who wanted to see an artist, who I'd never heard of. In order to save money on the tickets we purchased them at a record shop in Lakewood where they gave us a carbon copy piece of paper as our ticket. The Grog Shop was quite an experience. When I entered I was immediately swept back to the late '90s when I spent Friday and Saturday nights in a dark and dingy fraternity house basement. There is a bar with a few seats, two or three high top tables and a stage in the corner. That's it so prepare to spend your evening standing. The entire place is very dark. The bathrooms are covered in graffiti. Drinks were good and inexpensive. I found the age range of the audience very interesting. People varied from around 30 years old to maybe their upper 70s. My whole experience at the Grog Shop was underwhelming. I do admit though, that I may feel differently if it was an artist I knew and was eager to see. The reason being, the place was extremely intimate. I'm not eager to visit the Grog Shop any time soon but would go back if I was excited about the artist performing. read more

Interesting little venue we have here. I've been for two different performances and while there are truly no bells and whistles to this establishment, you can trust that you'll enjoy a nice, intimate experience with the artist on stage. There are a few bar stools throughout and the beverage prices are surprisingly reasonable. My friend and I grabbed two waters, one beer, and two redbulls for $18. In a larger city, that price would have been triple! The bathrooms are bit difficult to find but surprisingly not gross. Also, the sound is pretty good, not too loud and very clear. Overall, this is a great venue for artists who have a small/medium-size fan base. I wouldn't hesitate to go back if there's someone else on the lineup who strikes my fancy. read more

When I moved to Cleveland Heights I never would have imagined a divey live performance space like the Grog Shop to be in my neighborhood. And I never would have expected to see a monthly drag show on their lineup! Since moving to Cleveland in July I've come to each of Anhedonia's GlamGore shows. I really am thankful this business supports the drag community with these shows. They are a lot of fun, and I really appreciate the Grog Shop for making space for it. Drinks are exactly what you want at a show. I usually get like a $4 tall boy to sip on in the audience. They also have full bar, as one would expect. The bands we're not the problem, not even the bartenders. The sound guys worked hard to fix multiple issues and I commend them for their work. The problem was the man serving tickets. Rushing people through saying "cmon cmon hurry up" as you scramble to grab your ID and vax card when you're 30 minutes early and there isn't even a line. Then as we grabbed our necessary items out of our wallet, he rolled his eyes at the inconvenience I guess of having to do his job. This process repeated not just for us but for every customer ahead and that came in behind us. I was scathing and fuming when I entered the venue which immediately took me out of experience of getting to see a band I grew up listening to. If the worker ever gets to see this, if everyone is such an annoyance to you and inconvenient; no one is forcing you to work there. I come to this small Coventry club mostly for the comedy shows, but it's primarily a music club. It's a Cleveland institution ( probably twenty years old) and the beer prices are pretty good (see picture of blue menu), but the only food they have are the bags of potato chips they sell for a dollar. Luckily, there are LOTS of restaurants near the Grog Shop to visit first. EDIT: Regarding parking - bring quarters. Even if you find something on the street rather than the nearby parking garage, EVERY parking spot in Coventry has a meter by it. I love the Grog Shop! It's a Cleveland institution, IMO. Located in Coventry, the Grog is a quintessential rock venue. Its gritty. The walls, whether in the bathrooms or behind the bars, are plastered with music memorabilia, stickers, merch and graffiti. Its highly walkable for a date night to nearby restaurants and shopping, and the parking is accessible and close. The staff works super hard to book diverse musicians. From Jamaican reggae, to bigger bands, to my favorite local indie-pop acts, I've seen them all at The Grog Shop. Its a smaller place designed for an intimate experience, which is cool if you're into seeing one of your favorite bands in a smaller setting. It's a dive venue, so do not come here expecting an Opera House. I've seen easily hundreds of shows here since high school and it never fails to be a fun time. I recently went to the Grog shop for a silent disco that they had. And let me tell you!!!! I had an absolute blast! The price for the event was only $10 which I thought was something you cannot beat! I have always wanted to attend a silent disco because I thought it was a neat idea. All the dj-s at the event were phenomenal. They truly read the crowd and knew exactly what to play. The space of the grog shop is very intimate and cozy. They had seats at the bar that you could sit at. Which I truly appreciated. The price for the drinks are very reasonable. The Grog Shop is certainly a Cleveland institution everyone should visit at least once. The decor is amazing and will be appreciated by anyone who is into music, and the venue itself has hosted some impressive lineups in its time - a tradition they continue to uphold while implementing more modern events (such as a silent disco). One of the best things about their events (aside from the wide variety of them) is the cost. Most events run about 10-15 dollars, at least for the 21+ crowd, with under 21 usually being a few dollars more. There's also a lot of ways to buy tickets in advance to save money (many local businesses sell them, and are listed on the Grog Shop website). Personally, I only go to the Grog Shop if they are having an event - i don't drink that much, so going to a bar with no event is not up my alley. However, when I go I sometimes grab a drink or two (or seven) and let me tell you: their drinks are good. They also (in my experience) have a slightly heavy pour (not terribly heavy, just a little more than you'd expect - if you haven't done much drinking before, you probably wouldn't notice). I really only noticed because my standard drinks affected me just a tiny bit more than usual - so if you like a good, strong drink, this is a good place to check out! read more

Been loving this venue since the first location in Coventry! I can't tell you what I haven't posted until now!!! Bad yelper, bad! This is your typical dive venue geared towards indie and underground music , even though a lot of big names have passed through the sticker riddled doors and beer stained floors. I love the vibe of the place. You know every time what to expect. Same door man since I saw Mudhoney at the old Grog. Same good selection of craft and basics in beer. Same hint of sarcasm and friendliness of the bartenders. This is what it's supposed to feel like at a show. The sound is decent but depending on where you stand the vocals can get muddy. Unless your short there's really not a bad spot in the house. And the crowd is usually pretty friendly pending on who you're going to see. I recommend getting there early if you what s place to sit, since it's mostly bar stools and 6 person side booth hidden behind the entrance. Mercy is usually to the left of stage. And drinks are poured for a good time. Coventry is an island but this place is an venue oasis. read more

This place has been a part of my life since I was eighteen years old, and I continue to frequent it as often as I'm able. I have strange, convoluted memories of the old location, with everything ranging from a hole in the floor that they called a toilet, layers of encrusted filth and stickers coating the walls (constituting a veritable walk down musical memory lane), Cleveland's ever-present hecklers verbally assaulting many a band or musician, and occasional possibly mentally ill persons ducking and weaving in bizarre, oddly entrancing dancing directly in front of everyone during shows whose music wasn't conducive to that dancing at all. The place used to be a dump, but it was our dump, and we loved it. At times, it got so crammed to the gills and sweat-filled that I went outside and sat on the sidewalk instead of paying the entry fee. I happily enjoyed an excellent Jimmy Eat World set without paying a dime that way. The new venue is much cleaner, larger, and generally better overall. It can still get crammed, but at least you're able to breathe in this place (as compared, at times, to the old one). As mentioned in other reviews, there's definitely a red vibe going on, accentuated by the prerequisite dim lighting, low staging, and odd wall murals (someone's sexualized version of stuff along the lines of Rat Fink). I still generally avoid the restrooms (although these are better than the other location), but the beer is affordable, the merch area is relatively easy to access, and I've been able to genuinely enjoy ridiculously good music in the Grog's still-intimate dynamic without coughing up tons of cash. Thinking of this place makes me want to sit down and attempt to catalogue the shows I've seen here over the years. Dang. Everyone from Tristeza, 16 Horsepower, Him (ex-June of 44), Pedro the Lion, and early Death Cab to being one of approximately six Gentiles at a phenomenal Matisyahu show... yeah. The Grog's a great place. The only venues in town that would combat it in my book in regard to foundational musical experiences would have been The Euclid Tavern and Speak in Tongues, but The Grog has outlived them all. Comparable in size to the Alrosa Villa in Columbus, but with a definite dive bar atmosphere, my visit to the Grog Shop was everything I expected it to be. Heed the warnings below about bringing quarters. The Coventry Deck, which looks rough to be sure, is nonetheless within comfortable walking distance and requires that you feed the meters with quarters at a rate of 25 cents per each 30 min block. Given that I paid under $20.00 to see Meg Myers here, paying about $2.00 for parking was not a big deal to me. The bathrooms have the same dive bar atmosphere as the rest of the bar, with stickers and graffiti on every wall, which definitely enhances the pissing experience. The toilet, though, looks like a relic from a local prison. Perhaps the best thing about this place is the fact that it offers a truly intimate experience. I was within feet of the stage and I had an excellent view of the show. In fact, I'm pretty sure I made direct eye contact with Meg Myers. This obviously means we're a thing now, right? I mean, she wouldn't have looked at me that way if she wasn't...alright, I digress. Place was too small and packed in like sardines. It was a ten min nightmare to make it to the bathroom. Then I had to keep moving around cause dust and dirt kept falling from the ceiling. When they turned on the light colored spot lights you saw all the dust and dirt in the air. Good thing I wore a mask. Had to shower when I got home it was in my hair and all over my clothes. Some dude was constantly smoking weed and I moved then some dude screamed at the top of his lungs. The Grog Shop fills a void in the Cleveland Concert Scene. Indie, rock, punk, hip-hop artists in a venue that has less than, say 300 people. The ticket prices have been reasonable every time that I've went anywhere from $10-20 each. Plus, you can purchase tickets at a few places around the city for a $1 surcharge. Its execution is flawed but satisfactory. Like Murray said, there's very little seating there, besides the dozen bar stools and a small pleather couch recently installed that seats 4-5. Unless it's the main act, I'll play the Simpsons Pinball machine on the side (although some of the time it's blocked off, whatever). The sound system is all right (being a music junkie, I should know more than just that) although I would love the GS to sell live recordings of their shows. They never have in the 10+ times I've been there. They have a full bar, with assorted microbrews (I'd guess 5-6 on tap) and domestic with advertised $3 PBRs [other domestics $3 as well]. The bathrooms are functioning with graffiti and bands' stickers all over the place. The service at the bar ? Ok. I never had any problems. There's a self-serve container of free water, nice. The layout is ok, there are a couple pillars that can block your views and make you choose whether to be standing in front of a pillar or a loud speaker. There is a circulation fan system there although that only helps if you're standing in a few select spots. I usually show up about 45 minutes after the show starts, and I usually catch the end of the 2nd unadvertised opening act. Their time management can also be improved; I'd like to see the start of shows moved earlier as well. If I stay for the main act [all of it], I usually leave around 12:30-1ish. I remember one time I went to a Little Brother show 2-3 years ago there and they weren't even on before 1 AM. read more

The Grog Shop is that grungy, hole-in-the-wall music venue that every city should have at least one of. That being said, it's exactly how it should be: a small, dark space with graffiti-covered walls, a hipster beer selection (lots of PBR tallboys), teeny stage and tattooed staff adorning old band t-shirts. If your head is as bright-blonde as mine, expect a little bit of judgment for not seeming "cool" enough. But, hey... I don't mind. I love seeing live music and yes, I used to be a musician... but I'm not one to sit here and talk your ear off about the acoustics of a dive bar. The Grog is a cool place to see a band because of it's intimacy and atmosphere, not because it's Severance Hall. If you're looking to see a band and relax around a table with your friends, don't come here. There really aren't many places to sit and when the show starts, it's time to rock out. One thing I love about this place is the bathroom. I could literally sit in there forever just reading the walls. That's how you know this place is a legit spot to see a band.. all the graffiti! If there was one thing I could change about the Grog though, it would be the age limit on show nights. I actually want to either give the Grog one star or five stars, because it's an infuriatingly inconsistent venue. Yelp should make their rating scale an animated .gif where you can elect to have it twinkle back and forth between two different star ratings instead of just choosing one. Last time I went to the Grog I fled in tears and you would probably have to gently bathe me in Cristal and wrap me in snow tiger pelts and give me a pedicure and deep tissue massage in the back of a limo for three hours to get me to go back there. The bartenders ignored me while pouring tequila shots for throngs of rapey frat boys and and the door guy wouldn't let me back in to find my scarf 5 minutes before closing and basically snarled at me until I left. SOMEONE didn't go to Waldorf school. It's called "using your words," jerkface. That said, I have also had a really good time here. Some of the bartenders are total sweeties and some of them, uh, aren't. It's a rock bar in Cleveland. Go to Portland if you want a vegan Ph.D. candidate to ask how your day was while making you something with house-infused raw ginger bourbon and fennel pollen and imported marasca cherries. The security/cooler dude is menacing and amazing; he trained at the Kremlin and apprenticed at the bar from Road House before coming here and is an adorable combination of feral and cuddly and I want to give him a high five every time I see him. read more

The Grog Shop, sadly and despite its history, is a horrible venue for almost anything. I really wish it could get more stars, but I almost gave it one, so yeah. They're able to book some pretty great music, which is the sole basis for two stars. Oh yeah, and it's ridiculously affordable. It's dingy, drinks are weak and overpriced, the employees are mostly burned-out hippies (in a bad way; I've nicknamed one of them "Father Time"). It's always packed, probably way over fire code (ever heard of "sold out?"), and there's really no ventilation to speak of. I don't mind sweating profusely while hearing great music, but only if I'm on the fields of Manchester, Tenn. Went to see a show at this bar for the first time and saw that they had a price guide to all their beers listed on the wall. Open a tab got some beers and at the end of the night when I went to close my tab it seems that they added tax on to everything after the fact. I've never been to an establishment that didn't factor taxes into the price of the beer so customers knew what they were paying for when they saw a sign listing the price of something that didn't advertise that tax would then be added afterwards. I've been going to shows at the Grog since probably around 1994, when I was too young to get in but I got in anyways. I have seen hundreds of shows at the Grog Shop over the years, both in the current location and the old one. Shows rarely start on time, so expect to have a long night. And if it's sold out, don't expect to be able to see anything. Maybe it's just the type of music I like that attracts every seven foot tall man in the Cleveland area, though. And they always want to stand in front of me. What the hell is that all about? I wish there was elevated spots in the club, sort of like at Musica, or the old Agora Ballroom. Alas, there's not. Best thing going at the Grog Shop right now? The comedy. This is a great spot to take in a comedy show. I prefer the dive bar atmosphere to a squeaky clean, two drink minimum, terrible opening acts comedy club. And lately, the Grog has been bringing in some of the best names in alternative comedy. Ok, the Grog is a Cleveland Heights institution. Bands have cut their teeth here, from the forgettable to the UN-forgettable, and it has played host to THOUSANDS of them. Just look at the graffiti-covered walls, and you'll see history in sharpie over every inch. Bands like Flaming Lips, Oasis, Meat Puppets, Sleater Kinney and even people like Henry Rollins have graced its tiny stage with their music and poetry. More recently, comedy in the form of a multitude of local, talented stand-ups as well as nationally known names like Pete Holmes and MC Chris have started appearing there and there's no end in sight. They have a decent bar, fairly typical for a smaller music venue, and there's really no parking save for street and the metered garage just down the road on Coventry, but it is worth it to see a favorite musical act up close and personal, and soak up the energy of this oasis of sound and culture.
