Most amazing course in the Plumas California area. This is my favorite course near Reno/Tahoe. Very well kept fairways and greens and staff is always very welcoming and professional. Driving range, chipping area and putting area are top notch. All golfers, dont sleep on this one‍ read more

Amazing golf course and club house. Thank you so much for a great experience and very well maintained facilities. Love the scenery full of wildlife and nature. We were able to get a last minute tee time before a competition, so we had no one in front of us and no one behind us either. read more

This is such a fun golf course to visit filled with amazing staff that are happy to help at every turn. Came here to check this out as a wedding venue for our 2026 wedding. The views are spectacular! It is a big contender as a venue for our big day! The lake house is a great stop for snacks or a bite to eat. I love that they have quick ready to go items to choose from if you do not want to wait for something else off the menu that has to be prepared. Shelby was a pleasure to encounter during our visit she was our bartender turned your guide for the course. She is a very friendly person who is happy to be of assistance. I love that. Brisket and tri tip are prepared on site on there smoker they have outdoors. It was delicious the brisket tots and spicy burger are a must try! read more

Grizzly Ranch Golf Course is a true gem. The course itself is in immaculate condition, with breathtaking views and challenging holes that keep things interesting. It's a beautiful spot, and you might even spot some deer wandering by as you play. The Lake House is the perfect place to relax afterward. The bartenders, Shelby and Bri, serve up a solid selection of drinks with a smile. I was also impressed by their ready-to-go buffalo chicken wrap, for a premade item, it was surprisingly delicious and perfect for a quick bite before a full meal. Don't miss their smoked tri-tip and brisket, both cooked in-house and packed with flavor. The food and drink are all reasonably priced for the quality you get. Grizzly Ranch is more than just a golf course--it's a peaceful retreat with great food, drinks, and service. You never know you might even see a family of deer on your way out of the course! As a fan of wildlife it was a sight to see. Highly recommend it! read more

Played Grizzly Ranch for the 1st time. While it was about a 45 minute drive from Reno and cost a little more than what I usually like to pay it was well worth it, and was a great golf experience! The fairways and rough were trimmed perfectly. The greens were also in great shape. The speed of the greens was true, not too fast and not too slow but just right! The practice facilities were also nice and helped prepare me for the course. While the course was in great shape and beautiful what stuck out to me was how friendly, positive and helpful all the staff I interacted with were! I am very much looking forward to playing Grizzly Ranch again! read more

This is a beautiful course. The fescue grass makes it a challenging course. Stay on the fairways and make wise shot selections or it could be a rough day in the most beautiful setting possible. Played this course three times this summer and can't get enough of it. Worth the drive. Really fast greens! read more

Wow! What an experience! What a course! We had a 2pm tee time on a Wednesday which was the start of twilight. Cost us 90 each but you do get free range balls. Everything about this course is immaculate. Tee boxes are beautiful, greens are true.and staff is wonderfully nice. As we warmed up the Marshall told us about a couple tricky holes which was nice of him and he also told us we literally had 20 minutes in front of us and behind us open so we would be alone. YES! That made me so happy. NEVER saw anyone behind us all day and only at the end did we see anyone in front. So a very peaceful round. This course has a lot of raised and lowered tee boxes/greens so distances are tricky. Water only comes into play on 9 and 18. I shot decent but let me tell you, my driver was a little unpredictable and if you miss fairways you are literally in the wilderness and it is tough to find your ball or even hit out of it. The girls in the bar were very nice and got us what we needed at the turn. Love this place and will totally come back. OH! So the main hole that the Marshall was talking about I believe was 12, a par 5. It has 2 ravines running through it. Even the tee box says only 205 to the ravine. And then a ravine in front of the green. Watch out! Make sure you have your distances down. I was happy to walk away with bogey but my buddy unfortunately hated that hole after carding a 10. Grizzly Ranch is hands down my favorite course in all of Reno/Tahoe (I've lived in Reno since 2003). In the summer of 2020 my family and I bought a second home on the 9th hole and it was the best decision we've ever made. Having a home that is outdoors and on a golf course, yet is still only 45 minutes away from Reno where we call home, is absolutely amazing. The golf course, though challenging, is very forgiving for the average golfer, which makes it fun every single time I play. Prior to purchasing my home I regretfully had never played the course before. After playing that first time I think I was able to play 15+ more times throughout the rest of the season. I have 3 small children, so being able to introduce them to golf and having them learn how to play at Grizzly is something I am very much looking forward to. Every single person I have brought along with me for the weekend is absolutely blown away that this magnificent course is right in our backyard. The course layout, the amenities, the staff...everything is absolutely amazing! For anyone considering getting a place up in this area...do it! I promise you won't regret it. read more

This is the place to play! The course is solid, the setting is gorgeous, the staff is so friendly and attentive. It's worth the drive!

We had a group of 16 to play at Grizzly.....the fire had started the day before! About half way thru the round Grizzly on the GPS they sent out a message that the employees could go home and make sure their houses were ok! Right call for the employees! We were fine to complete the round, but the bar and restaurant was going to be closed after the round. When we were done with the round, the GM Caleb was outside the bar / restaurant, and opened the bar since he looked on the tee sheet and saw the amount of players on the course! GREAT customer service!! He also helped to make sure the markets were open so that we could buy food, since the restaurants in area were closed! We have talked as a group and we will be back next year and we will definitely play Grizzly!! Job well done Caleb!! read more

Grizzly Ranch - Such an amazing golf course with spectacular views! - Golf Near Me - Portola, California

This place is incredible -- pure and simple. If you're a golfer and haven't played here yet, make a point of making a destination day out of it. Such a great layout -- challenging, but fair. Practice facilities are fantastic. And the staff here is just awesome -- Caleb Olsen who runs the place is truly a good guy, hires good people, all of whom make the experience a really pleasant one. We used to play other courses in the area more regularly, but as their experience dwindled (looking at you, Nakoma/Dragon), we fell in love with this course and make it our go-to. If you don't get north of Truckee or west of Reno to play, you're missing out on the best kept secret in the greater Tahoe region. read more

This is as good as golf can get as far as I'm concerned. Everything was immaculate. The challenge was just enough to put pressure but not too bad that it's unfair or unplayable. The rough was thick which I love because I know I should be penalized for hitting a bad shot. Hole 3 was really a spectacular par 5. No going for it that's for sure! The staff and head professional couldn't have been more friendly or accommodating. I have played some of the best courses and this is the top of my list all things given. read more

Save your money...They don't tell you the condition of the course when you book a tee time "not good". In addition they over book and as a a matter of fact you need a book while you wait to play the next whole. Don't bother mentioning the pain to the pro shop they have every excuse in the book plus Sam is NOT your friend. All they could tell me is they have a problem with water for the course and this upcoming year is obviously unfortunately going to be an additional issue for them. Don't get me wrong, I love this track and typically prime time just not right now. Wait at least a month to play on something half way decent especially for the money they charge. If you go between now and a month from now be prepared for unfavorable conditions and slow days with no consideration of keeping the pace of play moving. The dragon postponed there opening from the 14th to the 26th of this month because the course wasn't ready, neither is the Grizzly but they need the money I guess. No Dragon is not anything close to the Grizzly, my point is when you charge full boat disclose or give us a break based on the conditions, surprises are a huge drag for us golf folk. read more

I rarely ever review anything, but I have to since I just played the most amazing round of golf at my new favorite golf course ever...Grizzly Ranch Golf Club! Conditions were perfect! Scenery breathtaking! Prestine tees, fairways, and perfect true rolling greens! The service from the bag drop off boys, to the awesome dudes at the pro shop who literally drive down to the fantastic driving range with the free pyramid shaped range balls to get you when your tee time was ready, to the restaurant and food, I can't say enough. Pace of play was perfect since there was nobody on the course it seems on a Friday afternoon during prime time as everyone is tucked into pine trees and winding paths. Great value for the money as well! Can't beat that! Golf doesn't get any better than this! Will make this a regular thing for sure! Thank you Grizz! read more

Grizzly Ranch - Golf course - Golf Near Me - Portola, California

I have to preface this review by saying I did not lift a club, strike a golf ball and my blood pressure was not through the roof. Back in my days of golfing I would usually go through a dozen golf balls in eighteen holes. Titlelist loved me, in fact one year I think they sent a christmas card. Since my stroke 15 years ago, I have not been able to play golf. So this outing was pure pleasure, I w as s just riding along. My brother and cousin wanted to know if I wanted to join them and just ride along. You could not have asked for a more beautiful day, alittle breeze, and not to warm. Everyone at Grizzly ranch is so friendly and accommodating. The minute we arrived our clubs were wisked out of the car and put on the carts. For me to drive around the course it was 15 bucks, which i thought was fair. The course itself is beautiful and well kept up. It is moderately hilly, with a couple of water holes. This course definitely rewards you for staying in the fairway. Stray off the fairway, good luck. The dry grass is extremely long and makes it difficult to find your ball. I thought I knew all the classic golf swear words, but I think i learned some new ones. The cool thing was you get incredible mountain vistas, and my only stress was getting a cold beer out. I can get used to this, and can can honestly say I did not lose one ball. read more

My review is not about the golf course I've never played it but I plan to what I've seen of the golf course is absolutely beautiful and looks like it's well-kept my wife and I decided to go for a little drive and enjoy the view and have a nice little lunch There was two of us and we're handed one menu we ordered a margarita on the rocks water and a sprite the young little girl it was bartending brought us our drinks after a lengthy wait the margarita on the rocks for certain wrong class with some melted ice in a martini glass I ordered the margarita with a higher grade of tequila upon receiving the margarita it tasted very bitter and of course cannot taste tequila I returned it till the little girl that the drink was not made correctly and was very bitter instead I ordered I am corona in its place she commits to give me a Modelo I told the bartender not to charge us for the margarita which she did anyway when I confronted her about this issue she became very defensive and argumentative stating that that's the way she make sure margaritas and then everybody likes them except us after some back-and-forth another young lady which appeared to be A manager she also became argumentative by the end she did subtract the drink needless to say we will never drink there never eat there again hope my golfing experience will be much different stay tuned Upon leaving we return the golf cart to a young man named Gannon he was very polite very informative and apologized profusely for a bad experience at the snack bar or restaurant whatever you wanna call it read more

We have played Grizzly Ranch several (either 4 or 5) times and all past experiences were positive. That changed last Friday when our group (15 people this year) played here. The course was in excellent condition, as always. The folks in the pro shop were pleasant and courteous. The starter was also a nice pleasant individual. Why the low rating you ask? The marshal was rude, aggressive, lied to us and threatened to move us up. Per the clock we were 13 minutes behind schedule when he first approached us, but we never had anyone waiting behind us to hit (he claimed we were causing a 4-5 hole backup while on hole #5, yet hadn't seen anyone waiting behind us). We had been having some difficulties and we said we would try to speed up, which we did. He then came to us 3 holes in a row to tell us to speed up with us slowly gaining all the time. Finally, he threatened to move us ahead a hole while we were on the 8th green. At the point we got off the 8th green, I checked the clock on the GPS and we had gotten down to 6 minutes behind. Then we get to the 9th tee and the group ahead of us is still playing that hole. Where exactly was this "gentleman" going to move us to? When talking with our other groups, they all expressed that he was pulling this same crap with them as well. You pay $130 for green fees, you should not be treated in this manner. Had it not been for this individual I would be giving a 4 or a 5 rating, but that sort of treatment is 100% unacceptable. Even though I love the course, there is a very good chance that we will not play here again. Our group of 15 or 16 every year has been coming to the Graeagle area for our annual trip for about a decade and have never had this issue before. I have been playing golf for 50 years and have never run into a more unpleasant person on a golf course that this particular marshal. It's a crying shame that a facility of this quality would have their face to the public on the course so much resemble an equine posterior. read more

I was passing through Portola pulling my 5th wheel and met my friend here on a Tuesday early morning, the day after a heavy storm in early June. Obviously I gave the pro shop a heads up on my rig, but even so, they went above and beyond to ensure I had a safe passage into the parking lot, where I was greeted (by name) and personally escorted to an area specifically designated for me. That same person (Craig I believe) continued to treat us as if we were private club members for the remainder of warm up, turn at the 9th and of course, the 19th. That same attitude of welcomeness continued on to the club house, the bar, restaurant and even the four different locals we met along the way. That was just the experience with the people! As for the golf course... holly "insert expletive". I've played most of the best "ranked" courses in the state of CA and this is right up there in the top 10. The natural beauty of the course surroundings was almost overcome by the design and pristine condition of this course. Every shot was fun and offered a new perspective of Gods country. Mind you there wasn't a soul to be seen in front or behind, so it felt as though they had prepared this amazing course just for the two of us. So cool! Obviously I recommend this course for all, with the only exception being a lengthy drive. Typically I'm coming from Southern Bay Area, which puts this course out of reach for a Friday round. That being said, they offer several camping/RV spots along with reasonably priced cabins. I intend to gather up some friends and family and head out there in September. I suggest you do the same! read more

This is a GREAT golf course- a former private country club now open to the public, with a wonderful design, challenging par 5's, a couple of teaser drivable par 4's. #9 is the signature hole with a beautiful view of the local mountains, with a pond and covered bridge green side. The fairways are plush, and the green roll true- not too fast, but challenging. With numerous tee boxes, it offers something for every skill level of golfer. Excellent practice area with Pro-V's on the range, along with a short game area and putting green. The restaurant and bar are well stocked and ready for you, especially after your round. The grass area just outside overlooking the 18th green, with its cozy Adirondack chairs to relax in. Only 55 minutes outside or Reno- this is a gem of a course and well worth the greens fee. The have cabins available for rent on the property, which would make this a great golf weekend destination for a few couples, of a guys foursome. A must play if you're in the area! read more

Grizzly Ranch - 9th green - Golf Near Me - Portola, California

I had an opportunity to play this course about three weeks ago. It is a real gem. It was a bit hard to get a tee time and I can understand why. The weather that day was in the 90's, clear, no wind and the course is nestled in between the pines at 5,800 feet. The course was in excellent shape, fairways were immaculate, not a lot of unrepaired divots. Some courses are really scarred up that way, not this one. I spent a lot of time looking around, looking back to the tee, just taking it all in. It was magical. The greens were medium fast and undulating but not in an unfair way. If you can read greens it is a real help here. The layout was tough but fair, just a little narrow for my taste, but then I am a spray hitter. The holes were interesting and each one had it's own character. The practice facility was top notch. No annoying mats on the driving range. Range balls were included in the green's fees, and at the price I paid I can see why, so I was able to hit some before and after my round. The staff was friendly particularly the pro. I was made to feel welcome and the starter did a good job of explaining the course. The tee times were spread out enough, so that pace of play was not an issue. I was staying in Reno so it was a bit of a hike, nearly an hour. I am from Seattle so I don't get down that way much, but have had an opportunity to play a number of courses in that neck of the woods. As far as quality goes this is definately the very best I've played in the extended Reno-Tahoe area. I have played a lot of really nice courses all over the western part of the US and Hawaii over the last 50+ years and I think this was probably one of the top ten tracks I have played anywhere, period, it is that good. Should you get a chance to play this course, jump at it. I know I am going back next time I am in the area. Every course has downsides but it is tough to identify any here. I can only think of two. 1. There was no cart girl, which is always annoying. When it is in the 90's hydration is important, so it is nice to have someone come by with ice and beverages occassionally. 2. If you are paying full rack rate, which I did, this course is just a little on the high side, especially considering how far it is to get there unless you are staying in the immediate area. read more

Great day of golf! Beautiful course in outstanding condition. It is a tough course at 69.1/124 from the whites but it is a "fair course". Wide fairways and large greens for the most part. My wife and I drove up from Truckee today on a whim. What a gem of a course! We played in 3 hours - like having a private course all to ourselves. Fabulously groomed, and an interesting variety of holes. Long par 5's, driveable par 4's. par 3's not as memorable, but a good, fair test of golf. We thoroughly enjoyed our day. Well, this is difficult to rate. First let me start by saying that this is a beautiful and challenging course. This is a private course that is now open to the public. That being said, we would never play there again even if it were free. It's a great course if you have 5 PLUS hours to play a round! We were happy we had our cell phones with us as we played games while we sat and waited on every hole!!! They have no idea how to schedule or manage a tee sheet and/or the course management with lack of marshalls needs to be improved greatly. When we approached the turn to grab a snack (a bag of 1 oz doritos for $1.25)....we ran into another group that told us that they have called the Pro in the proshop to please send a marshall as it is extremely backed up and slow. After 13 holes and 4 hours of play and never seeing a marshall, we gave up and decided to leave! We stopped in the proshop to talk to the pro about our experience and he could care less. Not once did he apologize. Pros: Beautiful, challenging and scenic Cons: Very expensive, slow play, no marshalls or beverage carts, no restaurant only a snack shack and unless you're a member, don't expect to be treated very well. Bottom line: Don't go....Save your money and go play at Plumas Pines or Graeagle and get great courses, great course management and great customer service!! Very disappointed in Grizzly Ranch! read more

Grizzly is not only a great golf course but a great place to hold an event. I have gone there for tournaments 8 times. The course is great, the staff is excellent and the scenery is off the charts. The pro Van is a great host and quite funny. If you are straight, you can score. A must play if in the Portola area (only 50 min from Reno). Staff was very professional and friendly. Very nice practice facility. The course just opened for the year and is already in great shape. Greens ran very true but slow (early season). The course length was difficult from the green tees...probably would have saved a few strokes playing from the copper set. This course has a diverse range of holes (three shot par 5's, drivable par 4's and tough par 3's). Fees were reasonable for this type of club (range balls and cart included + great replay rate). I wish there were less stars to give this place. This was absolutely the worst service, attitude and over all demeanor I have ever witnessed. Make no mistake Grizzly Ranch does not want public play, they will take your money but you will be treated as a second class citizen. Van and his crew were rude and confrontational even before we arrived calling multiple times regarding our reservation telling us that his members come first. The starter Butch was so unfriendly and aggressive that a young lady in the group behind us was visibly upset by the way he spoke to her group. He did the same to our group but we were not intimidated. I am a handicap player and ask for a blue flag and was told no. And repeatedly accosted for where I parked my cart. Van even came out to a hole saying that this is a private club and handicapped or not the cart will only be parked in the allowed spots. The hills to the greens were much to steep for me so I had to skip many holes and at the price we paid was very troublesome. The other courses in the area welcomed us with open arms and really treated us so well and for much less $$. I will never play there again and will continue to review so other groups do not have to suffer through what we did read more
