Grive is a gem seemingly hiding in plain sight along the western quay of the Saône in vieux Lyon. Its tapas-style menu is highly creative and rotates regularly. I went first for lunch on a Sunday afternoon and it was fairly busy. It was so good that I decided to return for dinner the following evening at which time it was quieter. I started with a double dose of sanglier--wild boar--to make it into a lunch main course. This arrived as thin sections of meat layered and formed into a ramekin-shaped mound. Lean, fresh and wonderfully gamey, this was a true expression of the animal. Served with au jus over pureed celeriac for a nice, earthy, slightly sweet counterpoint. Dessert was dark chocolate crumble-studded profiteroles with chantilly-style whipped sweet cream and two small pools of 90% dark chocolate sauce. Dinner started with chanterelles in a fluffy white cheese foam. Main was two perfectly prepared monkfish medallions wrapped along its edges in nori--like large sushi rolls--served over black bean paste with a nice brown sauce laced with coconut milk. Excellent dishes overall although the bean paste was just a bit heavy. Price points are a fantastic value. They offer an excellent range of interesting local wines. Service was attentive and friendly. Grive should be a must-do stop for food lovers. read more
