Very unprofessional First time using greyhound service and we were informed by the driver that we need to get on another bus because the head lights of ours were broken. I simply asked when our new bus would come, and the response from the driver were extremely aggressive for no reason. She accused me not paying attention. Her own words "what did I just say?! I told you it will come when it comes!" I was simply asking for a waiting time reference, and if she don't know how long it would take, she could just let me know that she doesn't know. Instead she was upset and scolded me which was really unexpected. I found it very unprofessional and hostile. It is very unlikely that I will use greyhound services again. read more

Very unhappy. I had a friend give me a ride to the Portsmouth, nh bus station at 54 Hanover street. I arrived at 9:00am and the bus was scheduled for 9:15 am. I sat at the bus stop with my suitcase and checked the bus tracker and it said the Greyhound bus was 35 minutes behind. A Greyhound bus rolled by at 9:21, did NOT stop- there was no chance of it even opening the door. I paid $28 and the doors were not even opened to welcome me on. Along with the other person who was waiting to get on that bus. This message does not even include where or why I was suppose to be on my way to Boston at that time but that should not matter. This review is for Boston-NYC route to express how disgusted I am by the absolute horrible and careless customer service. My bus was scheduled for 9am. Due to traffic I was running late and made it to the gate at 9:01am, the bus left right before my eyes. Long story short - they charge me $20 for rescheduling to 10am departure. It's 10:15am and the bus finally arrives to the gate. There's no such a thing as human decency nor policy that works in customers favor. They are easy and happy to charge you a fee for missing a bus by a minute, but if there's a delay on their end because apparently it's ok for a greyhound bus to get stuck in traffic they might or might not apologize and you feel free to buy the next ride with that apology. (Though, there was no apologies, just an announcement that the bus will be at the gate in 10-15 min) 30 min into the ride the bus stops and the bus driver who for some reason works for Bolt Bus but drives Greyhound announced that the air pressure is low and that will delay us by 1-2 hours. Do yourself a favor and travel with one of the low fare Chinese bus lines such as CoachRun. They do head count several times to make sure everyone who purchased a ticket is on the bus before they take off. PS: they also make sure their bus is nice and clean and the seats are in tact. I've ridden buses between New Haven and Boston and had a terrible experience with Greyhound. I bought a ticket a month in advance for the 11:15 am bus from Boston to New Haven and found out, at the gate, that my bus does not exist anymore. I would have greatly appreciated at least an email or message telling me that my bus was canceled, especially since I did purchase the ticket a month ago. Please NOTIFY your customers of bus changes. This is not hard to do. Furthermore, even the Greyhound bus staff at the gate were confused as to whether there was a Boston to New Haven bus at 11:15. One of them told me there was and to wait. Another one said there wasn't and to go talk to South Station transportation staff. The lack of organization was disappointing. I miss megabus :( read more

Just got off the phone with trying to change a ticket to will call for a client. The operator took 4 tries just to get the confirmation number (it was like he wasn't even listening to me) Was on hold for a long time, to be told contrary to what we were told yesterday, that they couldn't change the ticket. Really bad service! I was late for my bus I get it and that's fine I understand no problem right? Just buy another ticket, that's a simple solution. But I go to to the counter of the greyhound bus station at south station to try to get another ticket. It's not America until you've taken the Greyhound bus and offered a stick of Wrigley's to a cute girl in the seat across the aisle. At least that was the American dream they sold us on TV in the UK in the 90s. ~~ Cut to reality ~~ A cold winter night making my way to NYC with several non-stable people on board, a rock-solid driver and 7 hours ahead. 7 hours?!! Yes, because Greyhound operate an overnight bus to NYC and if you are hardcore enough it's actually really good - leaving Boston at 2am and waking you up going through Harlem at 8.30am ready to have you out on Times Sq by 9am. And all for $18 online. Bring a big puffy coat, water, some snacks, earplugs, eyemask and some Ambien and you'll have had a decent enough night's sleep and not waste 4 hrs of your life waiting for the bus to get to NYC. The slow route trundles through Providence, Mohegan Sun, Mystic and a bunch of other places to keep the speed down and give you time to sleep. It's a nice idea copied from overnight trains in Europe. Go slow, make the most of the night of sleeping, save yourself needing accommodation in NYC. read more

Booked well in advance, this is the cheap way to go from Boston to Montreal. $37! (Flying from Boston to Montreal starts at $250) The new buses have Wifi and outlets so you can keep busy from a digital point of view. More leg room, too. This gives them three stars. The not so good part was our driver who was in an obvious hurry. He went through a red light at a speed that would certainly maim or kill whoever is in the way, and he stopped short several times convincing me to always wear a seat belt on a Greyhound bus. I regularly ride the bus from Boston to Springfield MA, so I have experienced this quite a few times. Although the Greyhound / Peter Pan monopoly insists that tickets are nonrefundable, and time specific they consistently oversell their 740pm bus to Springfield by about double. The bus never leaves on time, and consistently leaves around a half hour late. The first time this happened the station staff shifted some people onto the 800pm bus, which actually leaves on time, but the second time the station staff chose to do some thing absolutely deplorable. A group of approximately thirty Amish were traveling on the route to points west, and around half of them made it on in the initial load. The second half of the group quietly accepted their fate, and waited to see what would happen while the rest of the civilians started shouting, complaining, and generally being frustrated that that had paid for a ticket, and would not receive the service. Rightly so, they were angry. In response the bus driver actually ejected the rest of the Amish from the bus to make room for the rest of us, so their whole group was just left standing in the bus terminal, holding their luggage and children with no recourse. I am not sure about you, but I am not OK with a company that takes advantage of a pious, and well mannered group to make money, and tells them to wait for the next time Greyhound deigns to drive their route again. I expect that the Amish are not active on social media, so I have posted this on their behalf, not cool Greyhound, not cool. read more

The bus I took the other day smelled like pee. I've taken Peter Pan and Bolt and the buses have never smelled that way. Their WiFi service is based on towers and not in bus, so good luck keeping a signal. The ride was good, but I hope not to have that pee smell in the bus again. I usually take Peter Pan, but they had no buses going to my destination. Next time I'll plan ahead or even take Amtrak (a bit more expensive), but cleaner. Greyhound has upgraded their buses they have a lot of work to do as well. The seats were clean but they have to work on their shit a bit harder. read more

Oy vey. You ready for this one? I am a fairly traditional person and to me, Greyhound had a solid reputation as a reliable bus line, established over many decades in business. Sure, bus travel in general can be a pain, but Greyhound no worse than any other company. Or so I thought. Buying advance tickets on the popular Boston-New York route, I went with Greyhound. I had one awful experience, and I even gave them another chance. They messed that one up too. So, the first one. I am heading down to New York and we get pretty close to Manhattan and all of a sudden, the driver gets on the intercom and says, "Does anyone know how to get to Port Authority?" I am not making this up. You would think that the company would make new drivers take a practice run, or at least provide them with printed directions, but I guess not. Even more incredibly, the bus is full yet not a single person stands up and goes to the front to help him. I lived in New York for one summer 10 years ago. I am evidently the passenger with the most experience driving in New York. So I go to the front of the bus and try to help the driver out. We see signs for FDR Parkway and I tell him that at least I know that is a big-ish road that will take us south into the city. He asks me, "Do you know if I can take a bus on there?" It was hard not to laugh out loud. Why would *I* know if buses are allowed on FDR Drive? I'm not the bus driver here! Why doesn't Greyhound tell its employees whether buses are allowed on FDR Drive? The situation was completely ridiculous, but we did end up getting to Port Authority essentially on time, so I chalked it up to a good story. Two months later, I had the experience that soured me on Greyhound for good. Again leaving from Boston, on a red-eye bus ride to catch a morning international flight out of JFK. I have a pre-paid seat on a shuttle from Port Authority to JFK. The Greyhound bus leaves Boston at something like 2 a.m. so I board and immediately fall asleep. I wake up a short while later to see that we are driving along the Charles River near Harvard Business School. Now, even I know there is NO WAY this could possibly be a shortcut. There are two ways to get to New York from Boston--take 93 south or the Mass Pike west--and neither is difficult to find from South Station. You pretty much exit the station and get right onto the highway. That's right, folks. We had gotten lost before even leaving Boston. It gets better. The driver takes a ramp to get onto the Mass Pike... Except instead of taking the entrance ramp, he starts driving the wrong direction up the exit ramp. I am sitting near the front of the bus and see headlights coming at us head-on. Fortunately they slow down and stop to give the bus time get out of the way. The bus driver proceeds to make a THREE-POINT TURN (more like eight points) with a BUS on an INTERSTATE EXIT RAMP to turn around and go the right direction. The bus was two hours late to New York. I missed my shuttle, so I lost the price of the ticket AND I had to pay $60 for a taxi. I came damn close to missing my flight. I don't know if Greyhound pays their drivers peanuts compared to other bus lines or what. But if you are thinking of buying a ticket--just don't do it. Go with Bolt or Megabus instead. In a pinch, try one of the smaller and lesser known bus lines -- I guarantee you it won't be worse. It couldn't be. read more

It may sound irrelevant reviewing Greyhound Bus Lines without actually having ridden on one of their buses, but it was the direct result of their customer service that caused me to cancel my reservation with them and seek alternative means of transportation. While planning my Memorial Day weekend adventure, I thought it would be fun to catch a ride up to Vermont and ride my bicycle back to Boston over a five day stretch. After scouring the website I could find no restrictions pertaining to bicycles at which point I purchased a ticket; good-to-go! WRONG.... Being the planner that I am, I went down to the bus terminal to pick up my ticket, a day early, and to confirm that there was no bicycle policy. While explaining the situation, I was interrupted and told "hold on; one thing at a time..." After the rude gentlemen was finished with his ever so grueling task of printing my ticket, the conversation proceeded to bicycles. "We have a policy that bikes need to be in boxes." I explained that I had been on the website and that I could not find anywhere in the plethora of eight font writing that explained that, to which he retorted: "did you go on the website?" It was at this point that my tone began to change, explaining that I already informed him that I had been on the site and that our conversation would go a lot smoother if he were actually engaged in it. Again I received, "well that's our policy." Really? While this seemed to be normal behavior for someone who habitually huffs paint, the lack of a colored ring around his mouth led me to believe that he had a tad more sense than a jar of mayo; shame on me. I further inquired about the dimensions of the box; reply: "I don't know, but we sell boxes for $10." Biting my tongue, I simply asked if I would need to disassemble the bicycle and the retort again was "I don't know". Clearly frustrated, I began to ask if I could make a suggestion about the website and was told to "call the 800 number". I asked if I could see a box, and with much exasperation the Greyhound staffer reluctantly picked up the phone to have the person on the other line get one. It was at this point that I had had enough. I asked the agent to refund my ticket, which he did not want to do initially, but after assuring him that I was not backing down he had reluctantly issued my credit. So, thank you Jeff, Agent #8102, it is because of you that I will no longer consider Greyhound for future travels and risk the awful experience(s) described by so many other people here. read more

I've actually never had a bad experience with Greyhound Express--I think it's important to note that it's the Express service I like so much. I can't say much about Greyhound's non-Express, since I've never ridden with them before. I take this busline at least once a month to get to and from NYC. Depending on traffic, it'll usually get me into Manhattan pretty close to on time. There was one time where I spent a heinous 8 hours on the bus, but that was an anomaly, and not the norm, otherwise I definitely wouldn't continue being a patron! I've tried all the other bus services out there: Bolt, Mega, even Fung Wah (once! when I was a freshman in college! when I didn't know better!), and I prefer Greyhound Express because a) the newly refurbished buses are actually quite comfy--leather-like seats, wifi, outlets, etc., and b) it departs from and arrives at a real bus station. I can't tell you how many weird experiences I've had with Bolt and Mega, where I'm standing in a convoluted line in an empty parking lot in Midtown West to get on a bus that may or may not actually leave at the time stamped on your ticket. NOT FOR ME, THANKS! I'd much prefer standing in an organized line, with a guaranted seat, on a bus that will DEFINITELY leave at the time it's supposed to. End rant. Anyway, sometimes they'll have non-Greyhound Express buses (e.g., Peter Pan, random charter bus) that take you from point A to point B, which is always a bit disappointing, but whatever. You can't win 'em all, but I'd say 90%+ of time, I'll be on a nice, newly redone bus, so that's good in my book. Also, when they say they're Express and non-stop, they really mean it! There are restrooms located in the back of the coach for your convenience (I really take the bus too much, lol), but these buses don't usually (again, it depends, and a few times I have) stop at a service stop, which is actually fine with me, because I'd rather get to my final destination faster. The Greyhound Company recently underwent a bit of primping and updating. The old, crotchety buses are now a thing of the past, and in their place are newer, swankier buses, equipped with wi-fi and a little comfier seats. Not too shabby, and pretty affordable. A few things to remember when booking a ticket for a Greyhound bus: You may order your ticket in advance but the buses are still first-come first-serve. They admit to overbooking and are not equipped to be forgiving if you have a pre-paid ticket and wind up not getting on your scheduled bus. So you should always get to the bus station at least an hour before your bus is scheduled to leave to ensure that you get a seat on the bus. The customer service in general leaves a lot to be desired. Be careful with what kind of ticket you buy - there ARE options. Getting a refundable ticket is the most expensive option but it will yield you the best results when and if you find yourself in some sort of rut. If you purchase the internet special fare or a non-refundable ticket, you will not be able to get a refund no matter how much you truly deserve to. Even if customer service messes something up and it is Greyhound's fault, you are not getting a dime back if you have anything but a refundable ticket. read more

So with the snow, rising gas prices and a jeep that uses lots of it I opted to try the bus from Boston to Syracuse. I am always one for adventure. I bought the ticket online and the price was about what I would have spent in gas and Mass pike tolls. Plus I could use free wifi and relax on my trip. I purchased the ticket and could not print it. Even though I selected print at home. I called customer service and after waiting for a while about 15 mins later I had a ticket. I wasn't thrilled but it was resolved. I went to South Station grabbed a bacon, egg and cheese for the ride and waited in line at the terminal for an hour. I got on but others did not. I don't get why they overbook. If you are going to be brave and travel by bus arrive early. During my wait in line I learned so much about my fellow traveling companions. The guy behind me just spent four months in jail and was on the phone with some girl who I would guess had a restraining order since he wasn't allowed to see her. Oh the joys of traveling. I also made "friends" with the Bolt bus driver in South Station ( who spent a good ten minutes trying to convince my to go to NYC instead because I was too pretty for Syracuse) . I boarded the bus to Syracuse ( Sorry, sketchy Bolt driver) , got a seat, set up my laptop ( I wish they had trays like on planes) since I spent the trip with my laptop in my lap and was ready to roll. The driver never told us where we where stopping so I kept getting nervous I missed my stop. I did not and the bus was what I would consider to be on-time "15 mins behind schedule to be exact". The bus had wifi, yet slow but hey I will take what I can get. The seats where small and pretty much as much legroom as an airplane. Again that is to be expected. The bathroom was so smelly I could smell if from my seat near the front of the bus. I never used it! I have some pretty good bladder control. In Albany I picked up my next row buddy. A man who smelled so badly of alcohol, had a bottle of it in his bag and ate 7 sandwiches in 2 hours. I am pretty sure he had the munchies since he had that aroma as well. The people watching is entertaining at least. Even though I needed a good drink, shower and maybe even a dose of Nix lice remover when I removed in Syracuse. It got me from point A to point B pretty much on time and safely. For that they get a star. Wifi gets them two. That is pretty much it. The Bolt Bus driver was right about something. While I was not too pretty for Syracuse I am way too pretty for bus travel. read more

On March 18, I boarded a Greyound bus in New York City, bound for Boston, schedule number GLI2646. The bus pulled over on the side of the highway 3 times before finally stopping (unscheduled) in Stamford, CT, due to mechanical issues. At that point, the bus driver disappeared for more than an hour, without a word to the passengers. I tried calling Greyhound Customer Service numerous times, only to be told they could not tell me anything, including whether another bus would be sent to pick us up in Stamford, and that I would need to wait 24 hours for more information. When I asked if we should consider ourselves "on our own in Stamford and needed to seek alternative transportation" the agent replied "yes." Given this statement, after two hours, many of decided to hire Ubers to take us to Boston, at a cost of more than $250 per Uber. I've tried to contact Greyhound Customer Service since then to obtain a refund for this failed trip and very poor service. I've been told there is NO RECORD that the bus ever pulled over in Stamford and to their knowledge, it arrived on time in Boston. This is obviously false, and rather alarming that they are unaware of the actual locations and arrival times of one of their buses. They also claim to have no record of my calls to customer service that day, and no record of any calls from anyone else on that bus. This is without doubt the poorest customer service I have ever received from any company. I am incredibly disappointed in my experience with Greyhound, and based on this, would never use them again or recommend them to anyone else. read more

Oh Greyhound. Where do I begin? I had hoped that our relationship was improving, but after my most recent trip, I just don't know anymore. First, you made me (and about 50 other passengers) stand outside at the Hartford, CT bus station for 30 minutes for no apparent reason. The weather outside was a chilling 15 degrees (more like 0 degrees, if you consider the 30 mph winds), which got the trip off to a great start. After this unpleasant wait, we all ended up getting on the same exact bus that we should have boarded a half hour sooner. So better planning skills should definitely be a goal for 2010. While we're on the subject, changing your system so that a purchased ticket actually reserves a seat on the scheduled trip could aid in this process. Then you might have a better idea of how many people will be traveling at that time and you could plan accordingly. This would also prevent you from selling twice as many tickets as you have seats for on a given route. Just a suggestion. My bus ended up getting in a little over a half hour late. Traffic was light, so that was not a factor in the delay. Greyhound/Peter Pan Lines made this disruption of service happen all by themselves. A lovely ending to a wonderful trip. I should also mention that the will-call machines that are designed to print tickets for people who have already purchased their tickets online are out of order more often than they actually function. This has caused delays on several occasions when I have travelled and was actually responsible for causing me to miss my bus home last Christmas. You may want to work on this, Greyhound. So why do I keep traveling on Greyhound? Well, I don't have a car since I live in the city and rarely need more than a short Zipcar rental to get me where I need to go. But when I need to go home for a few days, Greyhound is by far the cheapest option. Greyhound's extremely cheap fares (especially if you book online) are their main redeeming quality. From Boston-CT, you'll save about $60 over taking the train to New Haven or at least $200 on a flight to Bradley. Essentially, if you're looking for a cheap way to get from Point A to Point B, then Greyhound is the way to go. Just don't expect to get anywhere on time and don't make the mistake of thinking that having purchased a ticket actually reserves your spot. read more

As a Boston resident who frequently travels to New York, I can say that Greyhound provided the worst transportation service among it's competitors. My first complain resides with their customer service department. I waited on hold for 25 minutes before speaking to representative. Not to mention the reps do not enunciate... There was an error on their behalf when I purchased the tickets and as a result I had to get my ticket refunded. The customer service rep told me I would receive a full refund in 3 days. On the 4th day, I called (waited on hold for another 25 minutes) to learn that the previous rep incorrectly input the refund and I would not receive my refund for 7-14 business days. I hate Greyhound. How on earth in this day of online banking does it take 7-14 business days to credit customer's accounts? Another huge reason for the poor rating is their use of the New York City Port Authority Bus Terminal. It smells like exhaust and is very dirty. If you care about your health and safety, you'd avoid stepping foot in this establishment. There are much better alternatives to Greyhound. If you can afford it, take the train. If you are trying to go cheap, choose World Wide Bus. While they do not pick up at South Station, they do have stops in Cambridge and Riverside (Newton) to NYC. Nonstop/express service. The deal-maker is their friendly, responsive staff. They answer the phones promptly, speak clear English, grant refunds generously, give out out free Poland Springs bottles, and drop people off outside Penn station. Save yourself the misery! Don't use Greyhound. One last thing--my outlet didn't work both times! Grrrrr Greyhound is the worst! read more

When it comes to Greyhound Bus Lines, everything goes according to chance. Maybe you'll get the super sleek future bus they flaunt on the website, maybe you'll get a Peter Pan bus from 1967 with ash trays in the seat arms. It's like playing the lottery. The best thing about Greyhound is that they run a constant half hour shuttle between Boston and New York. Unlike Bolt Bus and Megabus, you can show up at the station, buy a ticket and get the christ out of town. No reservation and no fear of a sell-out. On holidays and peak travel days, they load people onto buses with remarkable efficiency. They will round up every vacant bus in the city, pack it full of bodies and send it off into the night like Russian soldiers bound to Stalingrad during WWII. Paradoxically, the ticketing line itself is slower than Keanu Reeves completing the SATs. Even more infuriating are the express ticketing kiosks at the front of the line that are eternally out of order. The machines at the South Station terminal have been broken for four consecutive years. An impressive display of ineptitude. They have developed a thin veneer of dust, but are left on display, like relics from a bygone era, mocking you as you stand idle. Greyhound gets rated far below Bolt Bus, which has emerged as the Rolls Royce of bus travel, but is probably better than Megabus and their frequent delays and customer service issues. Greyhound also gets the nod for being the only of the three with an actual terminal in New York. Both other companies pool you on a sidewalk until an overweight person in a windbreaker yells "Boston over here!". Hey, the bus may be archaic, but at least you won't have to reenact the wildebeest scene from the Lion King when boarding it. Once on the bus, you may get a seat to yourself, you may get stuck next to the Aretha Franklin look-a-like who hasn't showered in thirteen days. You might get wifi and you might get a bus that pre-dates computers. Again, this is all about luck people. It's almost exciting. Can you feel the excitement!? It might be a breeze. Bus canceled 5 minutes before it was supposed to leave . The ticket online was 41.00 for the next bus 2 hours later they still made me pay 51 for their mistake. Even with this error the people at the desk were not conscientious of the passengers. Horrible service. They should have eaten the cost of the the ticket gave refunds then offered discounts or complimentary rides. read more

Greyhound is extremely inefficient with their third-party ticket sales. The tickets purchased for a bus today were to leave Providence Civic Center at noon and travel to NYC Port Authority. Online confirmation said the tickets could be printed out at Kennedy Plaza. Upon arriving at Kennedy Plaza, was told this information "was outdated and I am not sure why they have not taken that down from the website yet but we can't and won't print it for you. Providing your confirmation number and email purchase will be enough". Guess what? It wasn't. According to the bus driver "anyone can make up a confirmation number" and apparently he has no access to his riders information. I had contacted Greyhound customer service prior to boarding and received notifications from them saying my third party purchase confirmation would be enough, and only after arguing with the bus driver and providing this additional information was I let onto the ride I PURCHASED. Not so much for two other unfortunate passengers that only had third party confirmation numbers and no special emails from customer service saying they were legitimate. Greyhound is predatory and unorganized. I purchased a $35 ticket on line after the 12/26 snowstorm and got to the station an hour and half early because I knew South Station would be packed with people who couldn't leave after the storm. When I went to pick up my ticket, I was told it was still first come, first served but if I bought a 5 dollar reserved seating upgrade I would be seated first. None of the other bus lines sold tickets beyond their available seats. I elected to not purchase the 'upgrade' (note--a one way ticket pre-Fung Wah was about 40 dollars anyway and Greyhound was nickel and diming to get those pre-Chinatown bus sales), however, it was still charged to my card. The line for people waiting for a single Greyhound bus went all the way around the rotunda and Greyhound was the only bus line obviously selling tickets for seats that weren't guaranteed. One felt very stupid for buying a Greyhound ticket. People may have issues with the Chinatown bus companies, but their customers were able to walk in, line up for a reasonable amount of time and get on the bus, without buying an upgrade. The ride took 6.5 hours. Yes, there was traffic, but not on the highways, the driver made up some time actually. It was in the city, where there is always traffic. We were forced to inch block by block because Greyhound busses have take a specific route in order to get to the Port Authority. We were in the Bronx for about an hour and Manhattan for another. The seats were MINGING. They had that sheen and stiff feel of liquid being poured and dried on. There were no upgrades to speak of, but there was a film of mold growing from the vents. Finally, there was a fraudulent charge on my card later that night. I don't love Greyhound. I tolerate it. It used to be my only reasonably priced option to get to school from home (NYC-Albany). But as a college student, I didn't know better, and thus didn't care. Now as an adult, I have the option of Amtrak. But going back and forth between Boston and NYC as much as I do, the price adds up, so I stuck with my tried and true college Greyhound. For $30 r/t, it was a great deal Now that it's $50 r/t, it's no longer such a great deal. Sure it gets you from Point A to Point B with less worry than Fung Wah. But don't think it's all rainbows and kittens. Here's a few examples: Incident 1 - I end up stuck in front of this really massive, weird guy. The bus is full and he hogs up the seat next to him with his suitcase. When the bus driver makes him give up the empty seat, instead of putting his large suitcase under the bus like a normal person, he puts it in front of him, squeezing me forward. But wait. There's more! A half hour into the bus trip, someone a few seats behind me shouts, someone just threw up. This is telephoned (like the kindergarten version) down to the bus driver, who promptly pulls over. It turns out she had a seizure or something. It also turns out the woman sitting next to her is related to her but doesn't do a damn thing. Actually pretends she doesn't know the woman. So we're evacuated from the puke bus, minus two people, and have to wait for another bus. Oh, but wait, there's more! So while this whole commotion is going on, the weird massive guy behind me acts even weirder. He and the bus driver get into some altercation, and the bus driver kicks him off the bus too. In the process, this guy's luggage spills open, and out spills a bunch of porn magazines and plenty of lube. Very little clothing. Ew! Miraculously, we still ended up at the destination UNDER the time allotted. Incident 2 (maybe 3) - We're going to NY. For some reason, we cut through Jersey, but that's not the normal route, so some people go to tell the bus driver thinking he's lost. Instead of gently saying, "oh, I'm using this as a shortcut because of traffic", he starts yelling and cursing at the passengers for the next half hour. Obscenities like the F word. Incident 3 (4?) - Bus driver starts off on the journey. We're 20 or 30 blocks north of the Port Authority in Manhattan, when I guess the driver decides the bus is not fully operational. Doesn't tell us anything. Gets lost on the NUMBERED STREETS trying to get back to PA. We spent nearly 2 hours driving in a 2 mile radius, unloading and then getting on a new bus. No info provided! I know there were more incidences but I'm pretty sure I blocked them out. read more

I love Greyhound. I go to NYC a lot these days to either visit the 'rents or hang with some U/F/C NY Yelpers, and Greyhound is the best choice on how to get there. Sure... you can take an Amtrak train and pay about 80 dollars to get there, which will take the same amount of time because the trains stops in between and the bus doesn't. You can take the Acela Express which only stops, but charges you over 100 dollars. You can take the Fung Wah and hope you don't flip over for 13 dollars, or the Limo Liner which is nice but charges 65, or pay $15* for the Greyhound, and get there cheap and safe. *$15 rate applies if you buy online off the NYC special ratee in the lower left corner of your screen and buy the ticket at least 2 hours in advance. Otherwise, you are paing $30 and up. NOTE: If you choose a Peter Pan bus on the schedule (PPP instead of GLI) there is also a chance there will be a movie playing on your bus. DISCLAIMER: There will be a line. Prepare for it. They do add extra buses to accomodate extra travelers but do not freak when you see the line. Especially the line for gate 84 out of Port Authority in NYC. This is not their fault, so it does not affect my rating. read more

Terrible customer service and they're crooks. I went to purchase a ticket online for travel that day and their website timed out/crashed when after clicking the pay button. I had selected the option to have a mobile ticket instead of printing at home/picking up at the station. The website crashed with the message "Sorry our website is in maintenance blah blah blah, we didn't charge your card. Try our mobile site instead." The entire greyhound site wasn't coming up. Instead of trying the mobile site, I return to greyhound.com a few minutes later and the site is back up. I try to pay for the ticket again and receive the same error. I then decide to give up and decide to go the mobile route. They didn't offer a mobile ticket when I when to the mobile site (mobile.greyhound.com) so I just chose e-ticket and it worked. I received a confirmation email with the ticket inside (I didn't receive this the first two times). I also received an email from my credit card company stating that I have duplicate charges. After verifying I had duplicates, I called up greyhound and the nightmare began... The phone system menu options are terrible but people should know by now to just press 0 to get connected to a live person. A person answered who barely spoke English. I slowly explained what happened, how the website timed out but still charged me, and how I would like to get the two duplicate charges reversed. First, the lady didn't believe that I was charged (without even looking it up). Then she told me to go contact my bank (I told her it was my credit card not debit). Then when I asked for a manager, she initially refused by ignoring my requests. Then when I repeated myself 5-6 more times, she just puts the phone down! I eventually figured out she ditched me and decided to call back. I immediately asked for a manager this time but still ended up having to explain the entire situation again. I get the manager and again, have to explain the situation again. I"m surprised I was able to hold my impatience in check and not yell at this time cause I was really fed up. The manager gives me some confirmation numbers and sends me to customer service for refunds?? How many customer service departments do you have. Whatever. I get transferred to the new rep and have to repeat myself a third time! She obviously didn't believe my story but says I guess you didn't want 3 charges since you have bought 3 tickets for the same person leaving the same origin to destination. I'm thinking to myself "WTF seriously!" Then she says they'd like to offer me a voucher for the price I paid for future travel. I'm like "No." I don't want a voucher for future travel on this trash line. I just want my money back and maybe you all fix your website. She then says, "Yes I understand, I'll process your refund for the two tickets." Seven minutes later, both tickets were supposedly refunded. I made sure to note down the confirmation numbers for the refund so I can have them if I need to call back. I look at the time and I spent an hour trying to get these charges reversed. It's always constant problems with this company. Three weeks ago, they cancelled a bus (maybe due to snow) and refused to refund my girlfriend's ticket. They just don't like giving money back. They really need to be fined. read more

Sketchy, not on time, and worst of all TERRIBLE customer service. Actually complete lack of customer service. I'm not sure how they hire employees but they clearly give ZERO thought to communication with customers. Had priority seating, was first in line and they didn't go by seating areas, but opened the line up to people who didn't have priority, filled the bus and said " there's two here, it doesn't matter." The first bus filled, and left us all here with NO BUS. I will NOT BE USING GREYHOUND again and will make sure everyone I know uses other services. Highly unprofessional and disrespectful of customers. This is completely unacceptable. Greyhound you SUCK! read more

I have to say I'm surprised by the low ratings. I've taken roundtrips Boston-to-NYC twice, and I haven't had an issue with Greyhound. My most recent trip was a same day return. The bus left on time from South Station at 9:00 AM. We stopped at a rest area in Wallingford CT and then arrived 10 minutes early at Port Authority. The ride back was even smoother. We decided to return a few hours earlier than planned, so we hopped on the 5:30 PM bus, which was almost empty -- 12 passengers, including my husband and me. On the way back we stopped at a Roy Rogers in Sturbridge and then arrived 20 minutes ahead of schedule at South Station. Greyhound is more expensive than the discount bus lines, but I would prefer to pay more if it means I get to wait in a terminal (at both ends) and am guaranteed a seat. read more

Safe. Reliable. Not that much more money than the Chinatown bus. You KNOW you're making it in one piece of you take Greyhound down to NYC. It's a lot more fun going down to hang out with my friends when I'm not walking off the bus completely traumatized. (P.S. I think the prices for Boston-New York can vary, so always make sure to purchase your tickets online by clicking the "e-fares to NYC" button on Greyhound's homepage. I'm speeding down the highway in a rickety old bus when a wheel falls off and the engine catches on fire! The bus roars to life with screams from the passengers..... I wake up in a sweat! Phew it was just a nightmare of what could have happened if I had taken a ride from Boston to NYC on other buslines! Luckily I'm comfy cozy in the front seat of the Greyhound Bus, actually it's Peter Pan they're a collaboration, traveling safely to NYC with my best friend. The trip was great! Greyhound needs to keep doing what is doing because they are getting it right. I was a regular Megabus rider for my trips to NYC and back, but lately I noticed Greyhound was less expensive. Then upon riding Greyhound I realized it was just better. Leaving ON schedule (sometimes even early) not 2+ hours late. The buses are cleaner and drivers nicer. Port Authority is a little terrible, but I like that I don't have to wait in the middle of a empty lot for my bus home. read more

The "A-OK" for 3 stars really summarizes my experience. I was really afraid of my Boston-NY round trip after reading these reviews. Alas, I had already purchased my ticket and when Amtrak is more than 3 times as much it is hard to justify not taking the bus. I was too scared to take any of the Chinatown buses because I get motion sickness easily and if I had to smell weird Chinatown smells for over 4 hours I most likely would have thrown up. For $30 one way on Greyhound I was pretty satisfied. I had no problem getting a seat, the bus was not full, we got there on time, the bathroom was as clean as a moving bathroom can be, the bus driver was not friendly but not rude. People do talk on the phone and it's extremely annoying but that's not the fault of Greyhound I must admit. But a fellow traveler did say that the emptiness of the Boston to NY bus was very strange, he said he usually has to get there an hour early and he barely gets a seat. I got there 30 minutes early and had no problem. I would advise not taking the bus on a 3 day weekend or any type of holiday since the overselling of seats would most likely be a problem then. Also take your time to search for cheaper rates, someone else on my same bus paid $15 more than me for one way. read more

You know, I wanted to be won over by Greyhound's service after my experience with Philadelphia's Century 2000 Chinatown bus (http://www.yelp.com/biz/DJk8xrCvpN9MmG6mQbn0lQ#hrid:L6Rl-lv9UwQ5DCpuWODvfQ). I figured, Greyhound is reputable right? They must have something that the Chinatown buses don't have. But when it comes down to it, a four hour bus ride to NYC just isn't fun regardless which bus company you use. However, I was very pleased to be able to have the same low prices ($15 each way, $30 round-trip) due to Greyhound's summer promotion, but cheap prices don't guarantee great service. Duh. Case in point: Our bus left Boston at 6pm and we didn't get the NYC until 12 midnight. Why? Well, it was a lot of factors. Leaving around prime traffic time on a Friday night doesn't help. The bus driver taking a five minute personal cigarette break half an hour after our scheduled dinner stop doesn't help. (We hadn't even left Massachusetts yet!) Driving into a massive thunderstorm on our way into NYC really doesn't help either. All these factors added up to the slowest bus trip ever. At least the lightening provided a BIT of entertainment while we were stuck in traffic. But still... six hours on a bus. Not fun. The trip back wasn't horrible. We were able to jump onto an earlier bus since we were at the bus station an hour early. This bus trip went a lot quicker due to the morning drive and a non-smoking bus driver. My only complaint was the baby who cried/laughed (indistinguishable cooing) the majority of the ride. But what can you do? He's a baby. Tips for taking Greyhound: Get to the bus station an hour early to grab a good seat, especially if you're traveling in a pair and don't want to sit separately. Bring a jacket, the buses can get cold. Bring earplugs or headphones to block out unwanted noises. Bring a book to read. You're in for a long haul. Would I take the bus again? Yes, until I can afford a faster mode of transport, I'll take the bus but I'd do it begrudgingly. read more

tl;dr: shitty customer service, unreasonable policies. I've taken Greyhound buses before and service was fairly good, so for my trip to NYC from Boston, I booked a 4:15PM bus. Unfortunately, at around 1PM, I realized I wasn't going to make it because I was caught up at work. So I figured it shouldn't be a problem to switch my ticket to a later bus, and maybe pay some small fee. Apparently, this is where I was incredibly wrong. Turns out you can exchange tickets, but for a $20 fee. The ticket itself was $36 and a $20 fee? This was ridiculous; I was basically buying a new ticket. But I had no other choice and resigned to paying the fee. Only problem now was that the exchange policy also states that I had to be at the bus terminal in person to exchange my ticket. Which seems ridiculous to me because if I want a later bus, it's obviously because I can't make it on time, and can't go to the station. But maybe talking to someone who understood my problem would be helpful. Again, completely wrong. Customer service involved talking to at least 6 different machines/voice recordings and 2 people, none of which were helpful. The corporate customer service number had a ton of long phone menus and I waited 10 minutes to finally speak with someone who told me she understood my situation but couldn't do anything about it and that I had to speak to the agents at the station itself. Calling the South Station numbers was a waste of time; they have their own customer service line, except all it did was redirect me to a different machine for booking a new ticket. I finally tried the "Wait for an agent" option, and waited 5 minutes, only to be redirected back to the corporate customer service. Tried this 4 times, each time with the same result. I ended up losing my money on the greyhound ticket and just buying a megabus ticket for a later time. I'm sure Greyhound buses can get you from point A to B, but because of their unreasonable policies and awful customer service, I will not be riding with them any time soon. read more

Why would anyone ever take a Greyhound? Port Authority is awful, crowded, and heartless. More tickets are sold than there are seats on the buses, resulting in me having to wait hours to catch a bus back to Boston even though I got in line 20 minutes before the bus even left. I've had to take Greyhound 3 times and each time, the bus was packed & the ride was totally miserable. Pretty much any other bus would be cheaper to take, just do a little research!! Writing this review actually made me go back and give the Fung Wah and the Lucky Star higher ratings. read more

I hate long bus rides. What I hate even more is bad customer service. One of my best friends lives up in VT and the easiest way for me to visit is by taking the bus. I bought my tickets online 3 weeks in advance to get a good price. Finally Friday arrives and it is time for my trip. I show up at South Station about an hour before my bus and walk up to the ticket counter. They ask for the card I used and my ID. Here's the issue, my card expired. I cut it up and have a new debit. This apparently means that they need to apply an $18 surcharge despite the fact that it took the girl all of 5 seconds to look me up. And okay I get it, this is your policy, albeit a really dumb policy. So I ask her if there is anything she can do given the circumstances. Very rudely I am told "You'll have to talk to her" *points to woman next to her and lets out an angry hmph.* "Her" is less than helpful. Her tone is almost yelling! So much for the customer ever being right. According to Greyhound I should've kept my expired card! That's just crazy! She was incredibly rude for the rest of the transaction. I will say, I found the bus driver on the trip (and the return trip) very friendly and it was a very smooth ride. Unfortunately, I feel I will have to continue to use this service though I wish I did not have to. read more

Reasons to take Greyhound!! 1. Your driver actually has a drivers license issued by a US State or Canadian Province. 2. Drivers are drug tested 3. If your bus crashes u don't have to worry about the driver running away out of fear of immigration authorities!!
