This time, I had to rely on alternative transportation for personal reasons to visit my kid in Mass. It came down to either taking Amtrak- which would've been fun or going this route. I chose the second. This Greyhound station has a spacious waiting area, destination signs are clearly visible so you know where you're headed and there's a ticket kiosk and one lonesome ticket agent at the desk. Listen, this station isn't attractive at all- but the driver was friendly, the ride was incredibly smooth and I made it from point A to point B AND BACK safely. That's what really matters. For the state capital, this is a very poorly maintained bus terminal with many sketchy things. I've been taking the Greyhound for many years now and travel solo or with a companion on multiple occasions. This Greyhound bus station has many potholes in their parking area and a lot of garbage too, and it gets worse during the evening hours as more people travel in or out I typically take the earlier bus so that I can get to my destination as soon as I can to begin my day. I feel that the morning bus is less packed on the weekdays and just a bit more on the weekends. The bus drivers have been good and professional, and also allow for one rest stop as long as traffic is smooth. The baggage can be stored below or you can have a carry on if it fits in the overhead space. With many Greyhound buses being upgraded, the newer ones are definitely more comfortable and less dirty. They have a plastic bag you can throw any trash in during your ride in every aisle. With that being said, there shouldn't be any trash left on the seats or in the walkway, but people disrespect that and still make a mess. After said mess is made, who is ultimately responsible for it? I noticed that nobody really takes care of it and the bus is left in a condition that's no good. There are also USB charging and outlets in every aisle for each seat, but unfortunately not all of them are functioning. You can't rely on the outlets to charge your phone or laptop. The worst part on this bus is the restroom, God forbid you have to use it...but make the one inside this terminal even worse. Overall a rip off with the pricing and the added costs for traveling in a seat if you opt to choose one instead of a pre-assigned seat. Either way, you're risking it because no one ever sits in the seat their ticket indicates and there is no enforcement on it. I am very much looking forward to taking possibly the train instead next time I need to travel. If other options are exhausted, then I will give it another go though. read more

I swear this was one of the worst traveling experiences of my life. I booked a trip from Albany to New York at Maybe around noon or 1:00 PM. When I got there, I had never seen any station so dirty and unsafe in the middle of the day and I'm from New York City! As I walked in, I realized that there was no one working at the desk. It was pretty much a free-for-all, and I wouldn't dare touch the bathrooms or the seats with a ten-foot pole because I knew that would be unwise. My family didn't feel safe leaving me there on my own and for good reason. This place was so bad. Finally, someone approached the front desk to answer questions and told us that my bus had been delayed and that he couldn't give me a time for when they would get a new driver. The app wasn't being updated and there was no way of knowing what was going on because no one could or would answer my questions. I ended up booking a bus with another company soon after I gave up on Greyhound, which was fortunate because they thought it was too late to book that bus. I will never, ever come back here again. Greyhound used to be an American staple of comfortable travel. Then the Europeans bought this company and now (I was told) run it into the ground from Texas. When I bought my full fare in Oct., the bus in the morning of my purchase never showed up. A crusty old teller (drunk as a skunk - eating a hoagie) said: "Yes the driver was too drunk!", with a smile. The Greyhound Bus would not reimburse me the $40 for the ticket! I would avoid traveling through this bus terminal. I had a stop over here for one hour on Christmas Day. The women's bathroom was dirty and did not have soap. There is only one worker behind the desk, who is very sweet, but this place feels understaffed. It is desolate, the restaurant is completely empty and closed down. The actual terminal itself makes me feel very unsafe as a woman traveling alone as there are many homeless men suffering from mental health issues (I'm assuming based on behavior). It is cold and there are not many places to sit. If you have to come here, do not come alone, that would be my advice. read more

I have been thinking about the low number of 2 ratings I give. After going here today I realized it was an opportunity, though not 'golden', to do so. It functions fine as a bus depot. I have been here before and have always been in and out fast, but today with the traveling crowds and an hour delay on one of the kids' buses, I can say that it is not pleasant waiting there. The benches are not comfortable and the waiting area gets very dense. There is a restaurant; it's mediocre and overpriced, but you can eat the food. If you are stuck there and need to eat, it's not better to starve. There are also many vending machines. If you are taking the bus you probably don't expect a very pleasant trip to begin with, and if so, this bus station won't disappoint you. read more

I have now used this particular bus station twice for Boston-Albany travel. THE PROS: --MUCH faster service to Boston than Amtrak. Amtrak goes from Boston to Albany once per day at a very inconvenient time (leaves South Station at noon) and takes 5-6 hours to complete the trip. The same is true for the return trip, which departs Albany at about 3:30 daily...when it's on time (which it never, ever is). Conversely, buses travel between Albany and Boston several times per day. Depending on your particular route and traffic, it will take you between 3-4.5 hours to travel between the cities. I made it in less than 3 today. Hella better than Amtrak. --Cheap. My last minute one-way ticket was $37. It would have been twice that on the train, if it wasn't sold out. --Vintage Helvetica throughout the station. Made for a nice Hipstagram on my iThing. THE CONS --The location: It's gnarly. It's really, really gnarly. Don't hang out in this neighborhood alone at night. I'm from Albany, and every time I pull into this station I think, "ah, yes, now I remember why I couldn't wait to leave this city!" --The smell: Smells like an old-school McDonald's. You know, before they "cooked to order" and had to post the number of calories every item has on the menu. This smell permeates the entire station at all hours due to the activities of an on-site "restaurant." Really, it has no name-- it just has a generic sign that says "Restaurant". Huh. --The confusion: Am I in the right line for the right bus? Who knows? The loudspeaker is wholly unintelligible-- I second the comment about Charlie Brown's teachers being in charge of announcements. You can't be shy here-- ask an employee if you have a question. THE VERDICT: Not a bad option for Boston-Albany travel. For Albany-NYC travel, I would highly recommend Megabus (leaves from a spot near the Amtrak station across the river) or just plain ol' Amtrak, as overpriced and slow as it may be. Will not be traveling by Greyhound again. Our bus from NYC to Albany was over an hour late, and while I understand this happens from time to time - there was zero communication as to how long the delay would be and possible new arrival time. My folks, who are elderly and live an hour away from the Albany bus station were left waiting in the cold there for over an hour as they had left on time to pick us up. There is zero route for requesting a refund for services, and I was given the run around from both Greyhound customer service and their parent company FlixBus. I am not one to normally complain about these things - but was left incredibly upset with the service the day of our travels and subsequent customer service requests. We thankfully have several options from traveling from Albany to NYC, so will be utilizing those services moving forward. Do not recommend and will not be using Greyhound again. read more

Luckily, for my trip to Montreal from Columbus, I only had to switch buses twice. Once in Cleveland and then again in Albany. For one of the more major stations on the Greyhound route, the station was not one of the better ones (Syracuse was MUCH better). This one did have a small restaurant, restrooms, and a ticket counter, but it was way too small for the amount of people who were waiting to board buses here (our bus was completely full). Maybe it was built expecting lower traffic, but to make it a major hub on their routes it needs some updating. One nice thing about it though is that the routes that depart from here to points in the North, East, and South (sorry Western cities) are on the new buses. These buses have larger, cushy chairs with a few more inches of legroom, outlets in the seats to recharge those drained electronic devices, and best of all, free wifi that kept me thoroughly entertained on the rest of my journey. read more

Waited on line for a half hour for a 2pm bus when the door closed and they said that the bus was full, however, 9 people who PAID for this bus, including myself, were not boarded. Hey, guys? Wanna communicate with your drivers about where folks should stand for their bus? I was down there earlier this morning to drop my son off. One of the Adirondack drivers that went out before my son's bus pulled up directed us to door #4 in an effort to help us (We were standing at door for buses 1,2, and 3 which is what we're used to), where we waited for 30 minutes during which time several people lined up behind us, and a college-aged looking female and an older man arrived and chose to stand at the Binghamton door. BUT the driver of the Adirondack that took my son parked his bus in front of door #4 THEN opened the Binghamton door where only one passenger, the college-aged looking female with the older man, was standing. I'd love to give the driver of my son's bus the benefit of the doubt and say he went with a "ladies first" policy; but he never said "ladies first" before taking tickets, so his preference for opening the Binghamton door looked a certain way from where I was standing, you know, in the culturally/ethnically diverse line - with at least two other females, not including myself - that actually looked like a line. I mean, it's no big deal for my son and I at the end of the day; it's neither his rep nor mine. It's the rep of the bus station (and, Albany, if you're reading, I'm about to 2-star you like I did the City of Ithaca before I leave you with what I've been through since moving here last summer), the driver's rep, and his employer's rep. What can be said that hasn't already been said. This station is filthy, sketchy and pretty embarrassing as a travel hub to Albany, our states capital. This is a haven for homeless people and druggies. I took my first greyhound bus ride to Portsmouth which was unnecessarily long, but due to driving situations, it made more sense to take a bus. My bus was set to leave Albany at 10 AM. When I got to the station, as a first time bus rider, I had no idea which gate I was at or how the procedure works. The man working at the desk decided to talk to his friends instead of helping me which was nice. I ended up being the last one on the bus because I didn't know what I was doing. When I got on the bus, it was filthy. It looked like someone had jerked off on the window, and greyhound clearly didn't clean it. Every time we went over a bump, I thought the bus was going to fall apart. The bathroom smelled like death and was not stocked with toilet paper and the wi-fi was spotty and didn't work well at all. We arrived at my first stop in Worcester and new passengers came on. We quickly left to my second lay over for 3 hours in Boston. When I got back to the terminal, we were told that our driver didn't show up to today and we had to wait for another bus to come, delaying us over an hour. I was kind of shocked at how gross the Boston station was, although there was an officer with a canine walking around, I'm pretty sure there were passengers on my bus transporting drugs, because they freaked out when they saw the canine and started squishing themselves closer to me to get away from the area where the officer was, which made me feel extremely safe. Not. There was nowhere for us to sit, so most of us had to sit on the hard dirty floor unless we wanted to stand in a line for an hour. When we finally got on the bus, the wi-fi didn't work. A trip that was stupid and long to begin with, turned out to be even more stupid and long than I expected. I didn't get to Portsmouth until after 7. After this experience, I will never take a bus again. I felt like I needed to take 3 showers after this trip. read more

It's the day after Hurricane/Tropical Storm/The Wetness/Irene. I'm stuck in the Capital Region and have missed a day of work because Amtrak isn't running. Much to my personal happiness I find that tickets are available online for a 6:30pm bus back to NYC so I can get home at a reasonable hour and prepare to work my tail off at work the next day. I buy my ticket, print it out, and go to an early old people dinner at the East Greenbush Diner with my parents. My parents take me to the bus station. I walk to the entrance only to find sharpie hand-written on notebook paper: NO TRAINS TO NEW YORK. There are about twenty of these signs. The building is surrounded by foul-smelling degenerates. I go into the station to change/cancel/refund my ticket... YOU GUESSED IT. I can't refund/exchange my ticket at all; it's only good for the next time the bus is in service. Presumably this would be the next morning, but I need to get back earlier. Plus, I bet they oversold the bus because they figured people would be too lazy to write back and complain of the sheer stupidity of this situation. WHY did they let me buy a ticket if buses weren't running all day? WHY did the woman on the phone not inform me after I called to ask how early I should arrive? I'm still reeling from how shady Greyhound is. Listen Greyhound, ya ugly. Ya smell funny. And ya don't have Wi-Fi. RUDE. This bus terminal is the armpit of Albany, NY and it is in need of some serious upgrade. Bus stations are known to attract the sketchiest clientele, and this place is no exception. The "food court" area is a disgrace to eateries everywhere and should be avoided at all costs. The desk attendants are exceptionally crass and rude. Dirty tiles, dirty bathrooms, dirty everything. Knock this place down and build something new on top of the rubble. I think more people would ride the bus if Greyhound, Trailways, and the city could figure out how to fund a decent transportation hub. Use the Rensselaer Rail Station as a model. The physical bus station itself is dingy, smells like urine, and just generally gives off a repulsive vibe. It's an embarrassment to the City of Albany, which is otherwise a lovely place. Walking into this bus station is almost like stepping back into the 1960s, complete with the Helvetica block font everywhere. Bought a ticket for 8:30 pm and arrived at 8:25 only to be told that the bus was full. Apparently even if you bought a ticket for a later time, if you came earlier (which is apparently what happened in this case), you could board an earlier bus anyways. They specified that it was important to read the fine print before purchasing a ticket but I'm standing here reading the fine print and it's saying that "tickets are valid ONLY for the schedule, date and time for which purchased". When I went to try and find out what happened I was met with exasperated employees shaking their heads and making snide remarks at my carelessness for not reading the "fine print" plus was served a lecture from the front desk to boot. I guess they were a little on the defensive mode because everyone was pretty upset but still sucks to have to wait longer because greyhound sells more tickets per bus than they can hold. Staff was insanely rude. Enough to anger a Buddhist monk. I arrived at this station after having my bus delayed 45 minutes at the point of origin and then delayed another 3 hours because the bus broke down on the middle of the highway. A normal company may try to console their customers. It may try to offer them some sort of apology. Nope, not Greyhound. When I reached Albany, the supervisor yelled at me for having printed my e-ticket on two-sided paper. I explained to her that I *DID* print it on one-sided paper, but that the bus driver asked to keep my ticket and this was a SPARE copy I had printed. Her response was "nope, you people make it a nightmare for us. print on two sides next time or ask for will call. This is your fault." Immediately following this, a buddhist monk in full attire asked the same lady if she could reroute his ticket. She told him no. He told her he had already been delayed 7 hours. She said "it's not my fault that the bus broke down. I didn't break it" to which he replied "yes, but your company has still delayed me." She responded by saying "no, I work for trailway which is just a partner of greyhound." The monk then asked her to use the phone to make a call and she said "this is a company phone and I don't like your attitude, you can use your OWN phone." If this guy was not a buddhist monk, I'm certain he'd have exploded at her by now. In any case, horrible experience all around. Just terrible. Will never travel via Greyhound again and certainly not via Albany. read more

I don't mind the Greyhound much. Generally, I'm lucky: most of my seatmates only take up too much space, rather than taking up too much space and smelling bad. But on the New York-Montreal run, there will inevitably be a stop at the Albany station where they kick everyone off the bus to refuel and usher them back on 20-30 minutes later. This is the part that's hell on earth. If you're doing an overnight ride, it will usually be around 4AM, in which case everything will be closed and you'll gambol around in the wasteland waiting area, compulsively checking your phone every 15 seconds to see if it's time to go back on the damn bus yet. In any case, you'll be treated to a few characters asking you for change for the vending machine and maybe overhear some primo dramatic phone conversations. I actually once got a pretty decent meal at the food court, all things considered, but the guy rather rudely rejected one of the quarters I used to pay because it was Canadian. I have read so many bad reviews about Greyhound but I booked the tickets anyway from Albany to NYC. Not too bad for $50 round trip. We arrived at our outgoing bus 40 minutes early to be in line and we were welcomed onto the bus. However I believe they almost overbooked the bus because the driver came on after the last woman to check if she had a seat. The bus was cleaned just fine our seat outlets worked, plenty of legroom. Our driver did not yell or bark at anyone like reviews I have read. He was welcoming and pleasent and a good driver. We arrived at Port Authority on time. Port authority is your average new york city public transportation area. Our returning bus was the same day at 5:30, however, we arrived early to our gate and the driver welcomed us onto the 4:30 bus no problem. This was was very nice. Leather seats, even more legroom. Overall I would take Greyhound again. I gave it 4 stars only because of the drop off and pick up points it uses. It would be more central to drop somewhere like Bryant Park or the train station and update their bus station in Albany. read more

From the super shady bus station to the consistent lateness to stranding people in the middle of the highway, Greyhound has surpassed my expectations. Did I say "stranded in the middle of the highway"? Yes, this actually happened. I was stranded in the middle of the Mass Pike mid-December 2008, on my way from Boston to Albany. Initially, the bus had been delayed from 5:30pm to 7:00am the next day. Fine. No problem. Take your time, Greyhound. I'll just sit at the bus station overnight next to a homeless person. (All my friends had gone home for the break. I had neither place to stay, nor money for a room.) Then, halfway trough the trip, the bus broke down. Naturally, the heat was off, and everyone was freezing. When a passenger asked what the driver was going to do, he said he didn't know. "We'll just have to wait." The passenger pressed on and the driver finally called the Albany bus station. At first, Albany said they had no spare buses, but eventually said one would come in 2 hrs. Two hours went by... still no bus, no update, and no apology. I was lucky I had friends who were willing to drive over an hour out of their way to come get me. Beside break-downs, beware of trips that involve connections. You will probably miss them. The next ride usually comes no sooner than the next day. Will their "customer service" agent care? Nope, assuming you're lucky enough to find one. (By the way, they don't have them in the New York City bus station. Yes, this was another one of my memorable FML moments.) Will you be sent back and forth between numerous indifferent "customer service" agents at the station who claim that the other can take care of your problem? Of course. Will you be able to reach anyone from the company by phone or get a refund? Not a chance. All in all, ride this bus line if you like overnight adventures in strange places, have a lot of time to kill, and don't mind if your soul dies a little. read more

This is NY Port Authority station's evil twin little cousin. I take the bus down to Baltimore a few times a year, and try to avoid this place to late into the night. I actually feel safer at the NY terminal, and that is a low bar to slide under! One of my early learning oppurtunities with this place consisted of a person at the bus stayion threatening to shoot a fellow passanger. Where the !@$# was the police or security?? Avoid this unless you have absolutely no alternative. The busses are dumpy and the employees are simply rude, slow, and/or incompetent. We tried to go standby and had an employee sign off that we could, only to have him deny he signed anything when the driver said the bus was full We did get on a bit earlier than scheduled and thru no fault of the carrier, we were in split seats sitting next to some kinda weird people. The big guy next to me was slightly overflowing into my seat and had a habit of placing his inboard hand behind his head exposing his pits. Thank god he didn't smell, but a bit bizarre. And my wife was sitting next to a guy that got freaked out every time she shuffled her purse on the floor. And the driver from NYC-Albany would run up behind cars in rush hour traffic, only to jar everyone by slamming on the brakes for no gain whatsoever. Time and time again for an hour or more. And when we finally arrived, we all assumed we were actually in Albany, since he NEVER ANNOUNCED IT! In fact, he never said a word anywhere along the 4+hour trip. It's not like being at 30000 feet and having a pilot announce you're flying over the Grand Canyon, but not one point of significant interest along the way? We should have taken the train. The money I have spent on greyhound the past 16 years should qualify me for their black card if ever there was one. The staff themselves are generally knowledgeable and adequate with answering any inquiries you may have. Buying a ticket is a pretty straight forward process. Always pay attention to the announcements. So many people here would be doing themselves a huge favor if u only paid attention. You know the situation. When one doesn't pay attention, that person goes out of turn and messes up what should be an efficient process. And when one person messes up, you can be sure there are more following right behind. If it wasn't for that, this place would be a bit more pleasant. The food joint here is not bad at all. The burgers are surprisingly decent as are the fries. Can't speak on anything else regarding the food because I've never tried anything else. The self service soda station is generally very clean every time I buy something. They also have vending machines for food, snacks, and bottled drinks. As you can expect the prices are pretty high ($2.50 for a soda?), or maybe I'm a cheapo. Now if you want a comparison to Port Authority in NYC... Well this is like going to a 5 star hotel. The bathroom here is like a godsend if you've ever been to the ones at Port Authority. Your overall experience cannot be worse here. Guaranteed. The number one rule of being respectful is highly valued here unlike Port Authority. "Please" and "thank you" go a long way here. If there was a zero star option that is what this bus line deserves. My bus left an hour late and there was no heat on the bus. A.c blowing the whole time in the middle of winter. Unreal they would put people on a bus like this. It's 40 degrees my feet are numb I can see my breath, I missed my reserved pick up. The china bus is better then this. What a joke company. And o yea.
