So I was in St Andrews for easter sunday, and had been recommended somewhere to eat. Despite it not really seeming the kinda place, it was closed between lunch and dinner.
So, hungry and irritable we piled into this place as it was next door to where we wanted to go and seemed inoffensive. My first impressions were pretty mixed. The food being served smelled super tasty, and the bar looked pretty ok. There was Golf on the telly but I guess that's what people come for in St Andrews. In particular I was attracted by one of the specials, the Blaggis fritters. A mashup of Black Pudding and Haggis, served with a peppercorn sauce. They were bloody delicious, as were the cajun chicken burgers my friends all ordered. If I was reviewing the food only I'd give this place a strong 5 stars.
There is more to an eatery than it's food though. The service was pretty poor. Yeah it was a busy Easter Sunday, but I just felt like our waiter really wasn't on it. His patter was pretty duff too, and improved no less on repeating to neighbouring tables. The soft drinks we ordered we more than 50% ice which is a) unnecersarry, 2/3 cubes is more than enough in any Scottish establishment! b) is a total rip off! Draught drinks are stupidly cheap to offer, making them more than half ice totally turns me off a place. The biggest criminal perhaps was the coffee's ordered at the end of the meal. Totally burnt, nasty, nasty, coffee.
I'm kinda sad that a few things really let this place down from being a 5 star review. The food quality is great and actually pretty decent value for the price you pay. read more
