I had the privilege of getting my first haircut at Grey Matter over 10 years ago when they were in NoHo. My barber suggested I try a bald fade and I went with it even though I was used to basic haircuts my whole life. He also said if I let him try shaping my beard, it could look nice, so I tried that too, since I had never tried seeing what I looked like with a beard. Alex and all the barbers always take care of me and keep my fade and beard looking right. They are always professional, courteous, funny, chill, and on top of how to be the best barbers they can be. The store itself is chill, modern, hip, clean, warm, family friendly, inviting, stocked with drink options, and with all the best music playing. They have an easy to use website for bookings and are flexible if you need to cancel or reschedule - or be seen last minute. For instance, last week I wanted to look ready for a special event, and they graciously got me in last minute and in time for the event. I've been getting my hair cut by Vincent for a few years now. From the first haircut I got, he's alway been an extremely high quality barber and every single cut has been consistent. On top of having the only barber I've had that's been consistent with the quality of my cuts, the amenities and facilities of the barbershop are amazing. It's the first barbershop I've gone to that washes and shampoos my hair before and after my cut and uses a hot towel (very relaxing) to moisturize my face and line up my beard. Linh Nguyen is truly a WORLD CLASS barber. I couldn't have been more impressed. First time ever leaving a review (I'm not sure how ethical I find the process to be) It has been 3 days since my haircut. To start, I have been looking for a regular barber since 2019. I am very particular about technique, personality, and experience. I've lived in a few countries and have been fortunate to find excellent barbers that I remained loyal to for years. I'm a 30 something gay man with a receding hairline and thinning hair (if you know, you know) reaching the 'hair-loss' part of life makes a haircut appointment nerve-wracking to say the least. The shop is lovely, modern, and very clean. Chill vibes, nothing pretentious or chauvinistic. ( Feels comfy and safe for lgbtq+ ) She inquired about what haircut I'd like when I first sat in the chair. I let her know right away the style isn't my first priority. Rather, keeping some length in the corners of my forehead where my hairline has receded, and more density in the back of my head where it has an unusual slope, are the most important. She assured me that was no problem, but still wanted me to show her my "best case scenario" I showed her a photo I saved on Insta of some hot guy with cute hair that I'd love to have, but wasn't sure if I could rock the style due to my hair loss. Linh let me know we could definitely follow that style as a guide, and that she'd check in with me at different stages of the cut to make sure I was happy with the length. Linh was so kind, and very easy to talk to. She did in fact check in a few times regarding the length of my hair on the sides and top, and it felt like a collaborative process to get my cut looking like what I actually wanted. I didn't feel pressure to fake smile my way to the end of the appointment. I will stop myself from publishing a novel- I just have to mention her precision and amazing scissor work. This isn't a standard cut with a clipper guard and a razor- but really an artist offering you their talent in a way that was personal to MY head, MY hair. If you are particular, or anxious, or have receding hair, or thinning hair, or bleach damaged hair (like me) this shop is the end of your search. I could not speak more highly about Claudia's skillset and fantastic personality! Management is very sweet too! One time I asked if they had coffee, and one of the owners offered to get me Starbucks. I won't lie, it was more then I wanted to spend, but when you look at their work, either their main page or the stylist instagrams, they all do amazing work. Their fades and blends are perfect. The barber that I had was Emily. She did such an amazing job. She def. paid attention to detail, knew right away what I wanted. Also gave me probably the best textured hair I've had in years! Been going to grey matter for over 3 years. Unfortunately my last visit was my last. I booked an hour for a hair cut, The barber did not do a good job with my hair and was very rushed. He finished in 20 mins and asked me we have time do you want me to take care of your beard too so I said ok. He also rushed it and didn't do a good job. He finished everything in 30 mins and then didn't charge me for the beard on the payment so I said that's cool of him and then he asked me about the tip and I told him and then he added $25 for the beard trim on top of the tips instead of charging it properly. It made me feel uneasy and felt like it's a scam place where the barbers would scam you if they can. If you're going to charge $60 for a haircut and $25 beard trim then at least be patient , detail oriented and take care of your customers. He didn't even offer my anything , I had to ask for water. read more

Ultimately, i booked a haircut with Linh! 1. My Barber- Linh! First of all my fade came out very crisp & fresh! I loved how Linh took her time & was very precise.
