Took my Passat in for an oil change and a gasoline smell. They charged me $275 to diagnose and could find anything. Said it was likely a gas cap. Charged me $50. $325 for nothing! I can accept the $110-120 for the oil change. The problem did not go away. Took it to another German specialist in town and they immediately diagnosed it as fuel pump and fuel module. They said it was common and pretty basic. They see it often. Did Kotters not even check? I also told them that from what I had read online, based on my symptoms, it was likely a fuel pump, and evap hose, or charcoal canister. They discounted me.

There were three auto repair companies right next door to my office in RB but after reviewing Yelp, I discovered that there was a much much better one a few miles away. Trusting Yelp, I immediately headed over to Ricks RB Auto because his reviews were not only much much better but the praise to the quality of work gave me a very high comfort level. I was not disappointed. Driving into his shop is not that impressive being part of a shell station but the staff were efficient and friendly even though they were closing. They wasted no time diagnosing the issue. It was a leak in the cooling system in the rear section of the engine. Rick made me comfortable that he'll take care of it ASAP. The very next day the car was ready and Rick mentioned he ran into some issues. It turned out that it wasn't just a hose but a special water pump attached to the hybrid system that was cracked into two! Turned out this is a $900 part because Hyundai sells it as part of a larger piece that connects to the manifold, so he went to another source and found a refurbished part for just $200! Saving me $700. He not only saved me a huge amount of money had I taken it elsewhere but made several important recommendations on belt replacement as the car was aging. I told him he is going to be the only company to look after this car from now on! Well believe it or not, the car overheated again a few days later and off it went back to Rick. He assured me they will take care of it and boy did they. It turned out to be another hose failure in a different part of the engine. He not only replaced it and the coolant but charged me absolutely nothing!!! Even though the problem was brand new. I'm sold and I will highly recommend Rick to my friends and to anyone else in San Diego. It's so rare to see such service anywhere.

Smog check comes out to be $78.20 before the coupon (including the certification). While I was waiting, I found a $40 off coupon on their website so I showed it to the person that was helping me. I was aggressively questioned as why didn't show the coupon right in the beginning. He then told me I would have to reschedule since it has to be a physical copy of the coupon. I had to point out the coupon says "printed or mobile". There must have been some misunderstanding because who shows a coupon before paying??? Despite the unpleasant questioning, the service was fast. If you are also coming here for a $38.20 smog check, make sure to present the coupon like your life depends on it.

Reply back from CalWest Auto that fixed our car: Freon was low causing AC compressor not to turn on. No obvious leaks and passed a 20 min vacuum test. Serviced with leak dye. We have a Freon sniffer and checked in the vents and found nothing so it has been filled up and works great and is warranted for a year. I always recommend returning in a month or so for an inspection on all seals since the new compressor oil has leak dye in it and you can get a very slow leak from the seals. --------------- Super disappointed by this place. Went to get my dads A/C looked at and they said that they had to take the dash out, fix a leak in the coils, had to call to get the replacements. The total cost? $1,900. Then on the appointed time, (a week and a half later) their mechanic couldn't make it due to family emergency. Something seemed off. We went to another place to get it looked at and it was NOT what they had said. I'm upset because I didn't think places like this existed where they just try to scam you out of your money. I'm sure this place does great for other things but be weary. If you need the cost estimate they sent to us versus the new place (go to Cal West Auto in San Marcos btw) I'll send the paperwork your way. Trust that you should not go here.
